  • Aprils offering of The Somerset & Dorset Railway at work. Much of he what you will see is from the Summer Saturday timetable. In the hour between 13.30 and 14.30 there are 10 workings and 18 loco movements and this is just one hour out of a very full day starting in the early hours with the overnight expresses. WHAT A BUSY PLACE

Another action packed episode that combines so many features and such detail. An antidote to the current news and politics! Well done, again.

Yes. I can retract to my railway and the rest of the World disappears.

Thank you once again. I really look forward to this every month now. It is so realistic that one almost expects to see Ivo Peters filming with his Bentley parked in the background!

I'd love to see a schematic and a track plan to see how it all fits together - been trying to do one myself based on close study of the videos, but you've done some magic somewhere to make it all work! Truly a superb railway system in miniature.

Thanks. Track plan is on the July 2017 video. All 'stills' as I was laid up after a new knee op. Just working on the May video now

Another fabulous video, thoroughly enjoyed. I noticed on one of the freights the 6 wheeled tanker, one is being restored at Midsomer Norton South and it is intended to carry the United Dairies livery.

Thanks. I plan more Summer Saturday videos as such an interesting station to watch the amount of movement going on.
With northbound and southbound expresses in the 2 platforms that's 6 locos just in the station alone! So much going on …...

Great video again, puts my mind back to the mid 50's when I travelled regularly on the 19.05 BGP to Wincanton, think was heade by a P2
As a matter of interest in the 40's and 50's on Green Park Station there use to be a a glass display box with a model of " Stephen's Rocket" and with the insertion of one old penny it would go into action for a time, then on closure think was on Bath Spa Station then vanashed , any idea what became of it ?
Looking forward to the next " Visit to Green Park Ray

Lucky you. Sadly I never got a ride on the S&D I was by the track side watching.
The glass display has come up before but not sure of its history after Green Park. Its possible it got to Bristol Temple Meads but …..

Ah you were paying attention then! I saw this when editing and thought 'who will notice that the Black 5 is signalled into the left hand platform but arrives at the right hand'. Well done for being observant. I now know that I cannot get away with it in future!

Track layouts and signalling is an interest of mine, both full size and models. It amazes me that so many model layouts on which a great deal of time has been devoted to accuracy of locos, carriages etc and wonderful scenery are wrongly signalled or not signalled at all. SPADS proliferate! What I like in particular about your marvellous layout is the accuracy of the track layout, operations and signalling.

@@johnhopkinson695 I would certainly agree on that score. It was important for me from the first to have operating signals. I bulked at making all the ground signals work on the basis that life is too short but I may go back to this now and start making them operate.
You will be interested that every movement on the railway has to be signalled. So even the ground signals have a lever in the SB. The main Green Park SB has 42 levers and each of these has 1 or 2 microswitches which operate relays. The relays pass the traction current to the appropriate track sections from the appropriate controller and so the driver can move off. No signal no movement. Interlocking of a sort and means that only 'proper' movements can take place. I studied the track plan, signal diagrams, photos and videos to ensure I knew what movements were made at BGP and so every movement you see is prototypical.

I have numerous volumes on the S&D and indeed all your movements are prototypical which is what makes it such an excellent layout.

Superb Video of a long lost classic line just a small point, put some passengers in the coaches they all look like ECS workings! love the two LMS Diesels though

Thanks and yes do need passengers BUT I have steep gradients of 1 in 50 and I had to reduce carriage weights by replacing white metal bogies with plastic and so have held back from adding weight back in by adding passengers.

A first class layout and video. Can I ask you about your point rodding, I have just taken delivery of some MSE parts to make cosmetic rodding (working ones would probably be beyond me) but I notice that in the centre of some of your switch blades you have box.
I model a similar era, late 50s but LMS region and was under the impression that most rodding was purely mechanical at that time but it would make my version a little easier if it wasn't as it would simplify the connections

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  5 років тому

Thanks. I started with working point rodding, using 16th brass rod and etched 'L' angle brackets. Which work fine and easy to set up. For signals I used wire. All was well until I started experimenting with servo operation of the signals. Very good and so have gradually been converting the points to servo as well.

This is how the railway treated them! One might comment 'no wonder the railway closed' but to be honest the end for the S&D had been on the cards since the late 1950's and so these were token workings and cerrtainly not to attract passengers.
