Awesome discussion. Really liked your simple definition of a DFS. I was a tub loader as well for 6 years and changed to scooping when I started collecting large numbers of soaps in mid 2020. So now I scoop and bowl lather build, for many of the reason you talked about but mostly to protect my soaps long term water damage (including scent loss) and I feel I have better control over lather build including soap and water quantities. The only exceptions are rare hard/triple mill soaps whose scrapings don't stick in my bowl then I puck load the brush and bowl lather build. I think if you are the type of shaver that uses one soap until it's empty and moves onto the next soap then it wont matter whether you scoop or tub load as the tub will normally be empty in less than 6 months. Like you said it's always the shavers choice whether they scoop or tub load and comes down to individual shave enjoyment. Have a great WE Tobin.👍🤠
Great points and I totally agree! Less messy, having a wet soap container sitting around drying out, sharing soap, scent preservation. I'm sure back in the day that nobody ever thought about doing this, because you only had one soap that you used daily until it was gone. I use bar soap also and you really notice how fast the scent degrades over time and I've had a few that even became scentless before the bar is gone.
Well said, and I have seen the same thing with bar soaps. I keep mine out of the shower now and in a little soap caddy just for this reason. Thanks brother!
Nice video. I've been in this hobby a long time so I have evolved over the years. Early on, I a was a tub loader but for years now I am a bowl guy.. Now the only time I don't is with a very hard triple milled soap. Scraping those out and trying to smash them into a bowl is problematic. Often that chunk starts dancing around the bottom.
Really enjoyed the video Tobin and nice discussion point. I personally do both - I enjoy bowl lathering when it’s a soft soap or cream, but at the same time when my soap is from a tub I have no problem lathering straight from it. Each to their own I guess but appreciate your knowledge on it, particularly on the loss of fragrance, that was news to me. Have a good weekend!

I definitely prefer scooping. I prefer to keep the water out of the tub to prevent contamination. I didn’t think about scent loss but it makes sense. You can still school place in bowl and load the brush for a face lather. I prefer to watch the lather build in the bowl but I get that some people like to face lather. Thanks for the video
I scoop; never tub load. I measure 1/16 tsp of soap and add 1/2 tablespoon of water. I mash the soap into the water with my thumb and turn it into a slurry. With a slightly damp brush, I then whip the slurry into a fantastic lather. This method works for softer soap, not hard triple milled soaps. I scooped to avoid contamination of the soap.
@@Tobins_throwbacks I have been using 1/16 tsp to 1/2 Tbsp of water for the past 6 months or so. When I started traditional wet shaving about 15 months ago, I was using 1/2 tsp. Thus I have reduced my soap use by 87.5%. I only have 2 soap tubs. If you use my method, your soaps might last you 100 years!!

Heh, funny how you refer to yourself as a fraghead considering how much you know about scent notes and such (very similar to me in ways). I'm surprised that you don't review more EDTs / EDPs / Parfums / Extraits from fragrance companies, but then again, fragrances in that sphere are quite expensive. Still, I've been a part of the community and know a few perfumers and lots of fragrance reviewers, so I'm glad to look at that side as a part of the shaving community, too. Anyways, I used to be a scooper when I initially started this, but you see so many people in the YT shaving community tub lather that it's almost like, "You know what, that's easier to do." Looking at the two tubs you presented with one being scooped and the other being brush loaded...man, what a difference in appearance. And I never considered the fragrance, shrinkage, and BACTERIA arguments towards tub loading...especially as a person who loves fragrances and understands storing fragrances in cool, dark places away from light and changing temperatures to preserve fragrance oil longevity. So, I'm going to probably buy a few guitar picks and start scooping my soaps that way. This was a very helpful video, thanks Tobin. Always nice to meet a fellow fraghead! 😁😁😁😁😁

You mention in this video, "50 shaves or more from a 4 oz. tub"? The "... or more" needs greater emphasis. I have counted this. MUCH more than 50 shaves from 4 ounce soap.
Yeah, it depends on how much is used. For example, if you use Matt's methods you can get 58 shaves. But if you use Robert's methods of 1/16 of a teaspoon you can get as many as 200 shaves!😮 Crazy on paper. Robert has his measurements listed in a comment below this one. Look for Robert Ross. It all just comes down to the individuals style/preference. I don't measure and often end up with much more than I needed. So for me 50 is a good guesstimate
Separate your soaps into two categories. Those that you have tub loaded and those you have scooped. Use all the tub loaded soap first. If something happens to you, your wife will have more stuff to sell.

I don't have a scoop😞
Hey Robert, anything will work. I use a butter knife sometimes. I also have used a broken plastic spoon handle
No worries, like Kurtis said just about anything will work. You could even use a button. A flathead screwdriver also known as a standard screwdriver 🪛 a clean coin could work too. Lots of every day items. Have a great week brother!
@@Tobins_throwbacks I was actually joking! I don't need a scoop or anything to get shaving soap!🤪
Oh yes I scoop and I blame it on you lol
😅
Great video Tobin. We are on the same path with regards to scooping! Happy Father’s Day!
Indeed we are! Thanks, Glem, and Happy Father's Day to you too!
I get better lather is I use the scoop method. ~cheers 💈🪒💈
