  • On June 14th, 1969, Doug Martin convinced his younger brother, Dennis Martin, to play a trick on their dad. The boys would hide behind a bush to surprise the adults. Dennis, however, never came out. Perhaps the best known Missing 411 case, Dennis's disappearance captured the attention of the nation when it was first broken to the media. What followed was a search effort so large and convoluted that it would inspire multiple generations of conspiracy theorists. Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the reason we don't take plaster casts of footprints anymore is because we found out the plaster would expand and make people think the foot was larger then it really was. So that could have been his footprint.

Ginsang is legal to harvest in Tennessee, unless you do not have permission by the landowner to be on their land, but there are specific seasons for harvesting the roots. This is to prevent ginsang from becoming extinct. You have to let it come to seed and replant the seeds for the root you take. (I looked it up. My dad hunts "sang" in Pennsylvania and you can only harvest here during certain months.)

Your post is interesting. What I don't understand is why the man said he did not come forward because of hunting the "sang". All he had to say is that he (like so many other people in the area or out in nature), was just out on a hike. His story does not ring true and he may be a person who wanted credit or attention and didn't have real information.

I'm very interested in these missing cases specifically involving people who went missing in a short period of time around the presence of others who knew them. The elements of swiftness and familiarity make those cases seem very similar to how easy it is to 'lose' something the moment you drop it on the floor. Most of the time, we find it again but we retain a huge fear and impulse reaction to catch things before they hit the ground because it's like we instinctually know that once it hits the ground there's a good chance we will never see it again.. and that chance seems irrationally big

As a Veteran, The SF detachment intrigues me. It was a different era for sure, but it’s very very obscure. Special forces soldiers are just regular men, they have family’s and are fathers. Hearing a father was missing his son, and then having the skills and resources to search, they may have just decided to assist in the search and use it as an excuse for training. But that being said, it’s a very very strange call for their command to allow this to go on for so long. I’ve heard the Bob Gimlin version of this story as well and that whole part is what sticks out to me. Some research into this avenue needs to be done. I have a resource for this if any info can be found. If I find anything new I’ll come back here and post. And send an update if there is one to The Lore Lodge.

the Green Berets were said to be newer so it could easily have been a viable chance to train how to locate people. not only for search and rescue but for searching people who would not have wanted to be found. it could also be used to practice group operations and communication across a large area. they might have thought the search wouldn't take long so they just sent whoever was closest. when it continued they decided to send more people to get more training in.

In one particularly sad case, two kids that were trailing behind their parents just disappeared-no report of strange noises, no sightings of strange people or weird creatures as possible culprit.

Here's a few other details I read earlier -* Dennis was sent to hide further away by the kids because he wore a conspicuous red t shirt which was hard to hide
    * A man in a light colored car was seen by a witness below the location at the field, leaving the area.
    * More recently a skull was found at a further away remote location, never searched, long buried in layers of leaf litter. by the (illegal) herb hunter who wished to be anonymous.
This might combine with the hypothesis that the man in the car, described as middle aged, abducted him ( say by offering him a ride back to his folks), s-a'd him, (or intended to) and then killed him or dumped him in a place from which he did not know how to return, and/or died of exposure.
Also, David Paulides said Dennis's father said a ranger approached him to tell him some things, such as that an official in charge of investigations at a range of parks told him that searching for the "man or bear" seen by ther visitors at that time would not be done because it was too far away (it was not, suggesting a cover up). (Incidentally perhaps, this official later committed suicide. )
And that there were said to be feral fur wearing humans who lived not far from there and when confronted by him/other rangers had threatened them with a knife.

Grew up in the Upstate of SC, my grandfather used to tell me of the Wompus Cat, a large cat like creature that kinda reminds me of a werewolf but a cat. Said that his father told them of the stories back in the 1930's when my grandfather was growing up. Apparently people in NC, SC and GA blamed this creature for a string of livestock attacks and that the kids were not allowed out after dark. The ending of the witnesses seeing something running with something slung over its shoulder brought that story to mind.

I figure that the reason they take the psychic's tip is because it could be entirely possible that someone knows something or has heard something, and is trying to present truth or theory it in a way that doesn't connect them/implicate them, so they send it in under the guise of being a "vision" or "a dream", and those in charge would know this and take the tip is if it were the truth. Remember that they have to take every possible lead. If it turns out that they didn't, and it turns out the boy really was there, that inaction and responsibility would fall on their shoulders.
So I don't necessarily think they believe the psychic, just that they think she could somehow know something and this is her way of passing on, anonymously or not.

As a mom, this case absolutely breaks my heart and every time i hear this babys name, i just have this overwhelming need to hug my babies. I can not imagine how hard this was on his father. Especially knowing he was right there and doing everything right and something terrible still happened. I hope that father knows that this wasnt his fault, that he did everything he could have possibly done, and he has found some kind of peace (whatever little bit of peace a parent can get after something like this.) He's forever in my prayers and this baby will never be forgotten. He did everything he could possibly do, and although he didnt get his son back, he will be remembered by so many people because his fathers perseverance in looking for him, and the love he clearly had for his son. With cases like this, there really is no right way to bring any sort of comfort to the families besides keeping them in our prayers.

There was nothing odd about the Green Berets getting involved. The NPS files confirm they were invited in. They set up comms and worked alongside other search units. The Green Berets simply had no need to chat with the Rangers as there was an established, simplified, and agreed chain of comms the Green Berets would use through a military liaison team within the Air National Guard local air base - who were co-ordinating all military aspects of the search with the National Park Service Rangers.
To quote from the NPS file:
"Ranger Myers also contacted U.S. Forest: Service District Ranger on the Nantahala, who in turn made contact with Col. Kinney, commanding the Special Forces troops in that area. Col. Kinney requested and obtained permission from the Third Army Headquarters at Ft. Benning, Georgia, to transfer 40 Special Forces to the search area."
The Dennis Martin case is one of the most studied in all of SAR history and is used as a case-study in 'what not to do' - so many gaps and flaws were found in the aftermath of the incident that it's used to train SAR people. :/
The reason the searchers reacted to the psychic (one of dozens of such predictions) was that the Martin family were strong believers in the paranormal, and the search teams wished to reassure and indulge them to show all was being done to locate their missing child. The FBI also checked into many of the people who offered predictions...just in case they were really trying to allude to a kidnapping, etc.
Hundreds of searchers were deployed. Most of them badly trained, or not trained at all. They had little co-ordination, and bad weather hampered much of the searching. The storms the night of his disappearance also made rivers and streams really dangerous. The searchers tried to be comprehensive, but the weather and inadequate skills were against a successful outcome from the start. :/ There's a good chance his body was overlooked by searchers, or perhaps he even hid from searchers unfamiliar to him.
But poor Dennis just wasn't prepared for a cold night lost in the forest in a thunderstorm.

The logic for him not ever having been there seems to make the most sense. Did the guy have an insurance policy that got paid out? Maybe the family is complicit in assisting him in disappearing for some reason. Rather than there being foul play and no motive for foul play or accident coverup, could there be a financial motive for them to cooperate together to make that happen? Maybe at 82 years old he was ready to check out.

I was also in a Boy Scout camp and had someone in my cabin wake up to an animal laying on them, it was a fox though. This case is so strange, the only thing that kind of fits is some creature, person, or force took or killed that boy, and when the Special Forces figured it out; they went to hunt whatever it was and didn't want to tell anyone because people shouldn't know. If it was just like a bear or mountain lion attack or something, no need for them to keep looking for something or to not tell anyone what happened.

This was interesting to say the least. There are at least three things that tick some classic 411 cases; slightly handicapped, missing from a group of people, bad weather hampering the search, and traces (foot and shoe print) found far from original site.
The Green Berets have shown up for a few 411s, as has the FBI.
Sometimes, I think the government set up the National Park service as preserves for someone, or thing, and actually have some kind of agreement with them.
All I really can say is; why aren't there lists of missing people in these parks? Believe it or not, no lists of missing persons is maintained by any Park or government agency. I find that weird.

To explain why one is in the woods looking for Ginseng: Ginseng is harvested for the root and bc a LOT of money can be made on it the authorities try to prevent others from going on private properties to look/steal it. It can sell for $500-1,000 per pound, and that is the low end so you can see why people would be out digging in the woods. It's not easy to find, and they specifically want the root so that makes it harder. Also, Gensing is in high demand for energy drinks, teas etc, and an even greater demand in China/Asia so there is a huge market.

That said, it seems really out of sorts for that many to be there and to be so closed and hands off, when their whole specialty kind of hinges on being very much hands on.

Obviously if you are relatively close and have are not limited to a very short view you will figure it out, but at 500m in heavy forest who know what the mind would suggest to the observer from a short duration sighting.

Ive always thought that the immediate arrival of the GBs right to the creek sector after finding the footprints, the rapid reinforcement, GB communication and activities black out, and prompt departure and search wrap up a few days later strongly suggested the discovery of a malicious group of feral people preying on park goers or a foreign special forces unit using the woods as a base. It sounds like there was a rapid and thorough recon and then a reinforcement for an extermination raid before a cleanup and departure.
