This is full of inaccuracies, as noted by other commenters. There are some good histories out there, including one by AshleySaysSo, and another with the title "Unsung" or something like that. But ignore this one, a lot of it is nonsense.
WHOA, WHOA ,WHOA!! Way too much TOTALLY INCORRECT INFORMATION!! I worked with Gladys Horton from 1987 until 1990 on her personal solo demo recording projects and shopping a master around to the major labels trying to get a record deal and also went with her on nostalgia tours in the US, Vegas, Canada, and Europe!! She NEVER did drugs and was NOT a drinker or party person, and NEVER had any alcoholism issues. She was totally against such usage. Whether in the studio or on the road, she was focused on being at her best at all times and wanted everyone around her to be the same for the sake of a very professional performance and meeting any contractual obligations!! She was into maintaining her health and well-being as best as possible with vitamins and herbals always, even on tour. She was a totally dedicated and responsible mom, always ensuring that her handicapped son, Sammy, came first while still trying to take advantage of offers for performing and doing tours. She always took Sammy and her other son, Vaughn, with us whenever possible. And she was born on May 30, 1945, NOT 1944. And she died January 26, 2011 from a series of strokes, NOT drug abuse or addictions or alcoholism or any other incorrect garbage you've thrown in here!! TOTALLY FALSE DATA. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! Wanda Young Rogers was the one who had issues with drugs and drinking. Read Marc Taylor's book about The Marvelettes where Katherine explains what was going on with Wanda during their career. Katherine was the voice of reason and the stabilizing force for this group from the very start until the disbanding of the group. And Georgeanna Tillman NEVER sang lead on ANY Marvelettes songs EVER!! Totally incorrect info!! Plus, you contradicted yourself by initially stating that Gladys Horton sang lead on Please Mr. Postman and then later stating that it was Georgeanna?? Duuuuuh!!!????? And Georgia Dobbins didn't leave the group in 1962 because she was NEVER IN THE GROUP IN THE FIRST PLACE. Her father wouldn't allow her to join. She needed to stay home and take care of her mother, so she handed lead duties over to Gladys Horton. Also, Georgia was NOT 15 years old when she co-wrote Please Mr. Postman with William Garrett in 1960. She was born in 1942. Helloooo? Do the math!! She was 19 to 20 years old by then. And how could she die at age 78 in 1985 if she was born in 1942?? That would make her 43 when she died. Again, DO THE MATH!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! SO MESSED UP!! She died in September, 2020, at age 78 from cardiac arrest. And Wyanetta (Juanita) Cowart was there from the start. She did not replace Georgia Dobbins in 1962. Wyanetta is the one WHO LEFT in 1962 and The Marvelettes then became a quartet. And what a blatant lie saying she wrote "Strange I Know" and "That's How Heartaches Are Made." She didn't write ANY songs. It was written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Freddie Gorman. "That's How Heartaches Are Made" was written by Bob Halley and Ben Raleigh, NOT Wyanetta Cowart, and it was first recorded by Baby Washington in the early 1960s. The Marvelettes did a cover version in 1969. Wyanetta had NOTHING to do with any of the writing or singing of EITHER of these songs!! She NEVER pursued a solo career either!! SO MESSED UP!! And Katherine Anderson Schaffner's birthday is January 16, 1944, NOT in APRIL!! Geez!!! And she is NOT dead. She is still with us and active with her new Marvelettes group. And Katherine did NOT sing lead on ANY Marvelettes songs either. She sang first and/or second soprano, depending on whether Wanda was doing lead or in the background while Gladys was leading!! As Gladys Horton put it, she was a very strong soprano and you knew you always had strong solid backup with Katherine!! YOU NEED TO GO BACK AND DO THIS MESSED UP PRESENTATION OVER!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! It's totally twisted and corrupted history and egregiously disrespectful to Motown's first hit-making legendary girl group!! If this is a sample of your level of work, then all of your presentations must be messed up like this also, so you have no credibility whatsoever!!
@@eb0526 You're certainly welcome. So much erroneous information was SO UNFAIR to them and even comes across as out-and-out defamation of characters and libelous!!
@@jeatig Perhaps because the numerous horrendously MUCH-NEEDED corrections speak for themselves and are embarrassing. The presentation is a blatant example of pathetic research skills and incompetent journalistic judgement!!
VERY INACCURATE!!! Now Katherine did sing lead at the Inkster High talent show when they were auditioning for a chance at being signed at Motown, but they LOST. They came in 4th place thanks to Katherine’s inability to sing. Georgia Dobbins told Gladys straight out, “ DON’T LET THAT GAL SING THAT SONG, SHE CAN’T SING!” Gladys had already promised Katherine she could. Katherine DESTROYED that opportunity, but a counselor at Inkster High saw through Katherine’s mishap and still arranged and got them that Motown audition and the rest is History! So there is no way that Katherine could have lead any Marvelette song. And saying she wrote any song is Comical 😅 And my Mom, Gladys was not an alcoholic. So many things said here are inaccurate and not true.
I Had The Pleasure Of Meeting Your Loving Mom Gladys At Her House In Los Angeles CA Through My Cousin Candy Mitchell...Also Your Mom Was Candy's Godmother. A True Legend And She Will Be Missed Dearly.
We have to give the Marveletts more credit and acknowledgement. They paved the way so that other girl groups can achieve their level success in the music industry. R.I.P to all that passed from this legendary group. Their music is timeless and well respected forever like the other great Motown Musicians. ❤❤❤
I love The Marvelettes. They gave Motown it's very first number one pop hit Please Mr. Postman. Where Did Our Love Go was written for the group but they passed on the song. And when it was recorded on The Supremes, nothing but chart success but The Marvelettes would score other chart hits but would land top ten or top twenty on the charts. But not number one like Please Mr Postman. I love Gladys Horton as lead singer because she sounds a little like Mary Wells. Wanda Young was sweet and tender. Beechwood 45789 was co written by Marvin Gaye and Mickey Stevenson. From Don't Mess With Bill and further on Wanda Young sang lead. They're few of many Motown legends that aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This doesn’t add up. Juanita Cowart was born in January 8, 1944, and is still living, and Georgeanna and Katherine never sung lead on any of the Marvelettes songs. Juanita is not credited as a writer on “Strange I Know”. Georgia Dobbins left in 1961, not 62. All of them did not pursue solo careers either, and Katherine and Wanda left the music business for good. Some of these things are not the truth.
UPDATE: On this date, September 25, 2023, I've just discovered that Katherine Anderson Schaffner just died on September 20, 2023 from congestive heart failure. She was the last surviving member of the original Marvelettes!! :(
So much incorrect information here, you obviously did not do your research properly. Kat Anderson-Schaffner is still alive. She never sang lead ever! She never pursued a solo career. Georgina Dobbins never recorded for the Marvelettes as her father refused to sign her contract as she was still at school. She ultimately left the industry. Wanda Young-Rogers replaced Georgina not Wyanetta (Juanita) Cowart. Wanda was the one with substance abuse issues. She never released any music after she left Motown in 1972. She died in 2021 not 2020! Wyanetta (Juanita) Cowart left the group sighting mental health issues. She certainly never pursued a solo career or recorded anything else. She is still alive. Georgeanna Tillman never sang lead and outside of Motown sadly I doubt if anyone had ever heard of her. Gladys Horton to my knowledge never had substance abuse issues at her time with Motown, that came later.

Loaded with misinformation. He has two different members singing lead on 'Postman', two different members singing lead on 'Hunter' and 'Magician'; says Wanda Young died in 2020 when she actually passed in December, 2020. And there are other errors. I wonder if all his postings are this inaccurate.
Have mercy! These Marvelettes suffered trials and tribulations and died from all this badness. These losses are my biggest regrets. The Marvelettes was my first favorite Motown "girl" group. I hate to admit that all the Marvelettes are gone.
Seems to be a lot of factual errors in this. How can 3 of them be the lead singer on the same song???? If you are doing this kind of thing, try to be correct.
