Well, you can converse back and forth as to Clive's contribution to music...but nobody can doubt that he was part of an industry that took nearly complete advantage of thousands of young, talented, ignorant, motivated artists. All sides must be made available to fairly assess his place in music.
@@redpilledpict2747 Yes, he was even kicked out by CBS for being naive. Then he started Arista. Worked with a lot of established names with good lawyers like himself.🥕
Clive Davis:The Soundtrack Of Our Lives is an awesome documentary. I knew who he was but didn't know his story.Totally cool guy and it was totally worth watching. For a guy who can't play any instruments and no real musical background, his musical ear and intuition is like Steve said "Incredible".
Legend is used too cheaply today. In Clive's case it's insufficient to describe his awesome contribution. And he's still going. Amazing, amazing, amazing.
Jonesy says these things travel in cycles. Well it's sure taking a long time for this cycle to end. We can use another music revolution to shake things up right now
I did security for Mr Davis's J Records(at the time) debut record release party for Alicia Keys in 01' in NYC. Who cares Bro!!!!?? Mr Davis is indeed a legend...
I have no idea how his guy became what he became or did what he did. But. He has some kind of weird talent that is not "musical" but has everything to do *music*. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of A&R. Or something.
Early 60's he started as a lawyer for CBS records. Then the bosses let him deal with all the new artists on the label. That way he started to sign bands and JANIS JOPLIN.
I always just assumed Bruce played "Spirits In the Night" for John Hammond and that song was so undeniable he got signed on the strength of it alone. He invests in rap...hip hop last 25 years? He can't find quality new rockers? Fuck that that silly old man.
i mean to make it the standard again,we've allowed technology to take over in areas to our own detriment.which is why the music industry has suffered.sure,it puts pressure on the artist to try to make every song a hit,but it was so much better before when you put an album on the player with anticipation of what you were gonna hear.now its too much power in the customers hands.
He's obviously a very successful man and a very important person in the pop world but I can't help but be distracted by his spicy mustard colored hair.
IMO not really actually the original artist and repetiore man...he was a suit but very much knew talent...he would find the studio and production team. ..he was an old school talent guy...like Ahmet Ertegun...knows songs singers and the ingredients to make hits
Well, rock is about freedom. We're in a period where freedom isnt cool. So rock isnt going to be either. Nothings more rocknroll than Donald Trump right now. Thats just a fact. But thats not cool to say. Its true though. I dont think rock is coming back any time soon.
Yet fascinating how spot-on he is regarding artists getting ripped-off left and right by today's technology. If music should be free, then there's really no value in it anymore.
Ever notice these Jewish fellows like to give themselves different un-jewish names? It's almost like they're in disguise behind enemy lines pretending to be something they're not, most of them do this, it's almost like a war strategy or something...
Did you read his autobio, i don't remember about that. But he grew up in NY 30's crisis, lost his parents very young. Also many easteuropeans changed their difficult names.
Those bands were in UK. Arista ope rated from NY. He signed Lou Reed Iggy P op Patti Smith Tom Verlaine just to piss off other labels haha. But Clive likes Sinatra. But he did manage to score a huge hit with Patti Smith( he got Springsteen telephone number for those business matters)

it's only pretentious if you don't know what you're talking about - clive does. what he says may sound boastful, but he has been there/done that and i think is more than qualified to talk about how 'great' he his. if you've been responsible for so much great stuff, you can just be completely factual and it still sounds (to normal people) conceited and name-dropping.
all the older guests are more interesting and informative like this man.Good show

Hes a cnut but he helped certain people to go on & have hugely successful careers. He is a dodgy cnut though IMO
@@youjoker9647 All true but imaging dealing with Morris Levy !

Hey,you're the guy who knows all the Guitar of the day songs, right?
oakes family indeed you found me...
Byrds were on Columbia (cbs) 1965
He signed the Grateful Dead, and they had a hit single.
Jeez Jonesy not slumming it Clive Davis hoochie mama big time
19:35 Jonesy: "Do you think you still have ears for new young guys?" Clive Davis: "Say that again." LOL.
He has more than ears for the guys, that's for sure.
Do you still get it... because you're older? :-P
good man!
Steve Jones, you outdid yourself on this one
Wow, Jonesy interviewing Mike Reid,,,,"TERRRRIFFFICCC"!

''Where's my thick Ricky and fat Pat''??
Yes, really sounds like Mike Read

What's going on with the top of his head? It looks like it's been painted in with Microsoft Paint.

Seems a pretty nice guy. He's certainly championed some great artists over the years. Bless him !! Rx
A wolf in sheep's clothing. Shark smile...
Plenty been bitten by this man.
Seen it all in VINYL, the movie, right.
I still happily buy and insist on buying music.
Blinded by the light/Spirits in the night: Springsteen wrote it, Manfred Mann made it a pleasure to listen to.
rula42 I like Springsteen's versions of both songs actually.
I always just assumed Bruce played "Spirits In the Night" for John Hammond and that song was so undeniable he got signed on the strength of it alone. He invests in rap...hip hop last 25 years? He can't find quality new rockers? Fuck that that silly old man.
Clive Davis's formula was just find a unique voice and match it with great writers, arrangers and producers.
I find him to be very intriguing and intelligent.
music is life !
get rid of itunes and bring back vinyl!
Vinyl IS back. Vinyl sales are pretty high.

Vinyl sucks. Shit scratches, pain in the ass to dig through them to find a song, much too expensive now, etc.
As well as CDs. But yeah, love vintage vinyl!
is it just me or does Jonesy today remind u of Danny Aiello ?

Gotta love Urethra Franklin
I see what you did there.
KRAFTWERK!!!

You're being too kind-that isn't hair, it's some kind of spray.
Foo fighters have become safe corporate rock. Their first couple albums were really good I thought.
Utter Shite, one of the many bands that turned me off Rock.
This guy is interested in how many units the band can shift, not what the musicians have to say...
is he producer?
