      Bankers always hold more power... look at america now.

    • @decimater75
      @decimater75 4 роки тому +11

      @@HoustonSongz Not really true. It has much more to do with how the system is set up. Italy did not have much of a convention for how cities (which were essentially how most states were formed in Italy during that period, around a city) should be ruled in the period where the Medici popped up. Florence was loosely a republic, but it functioned more as an aristocracy and the hierarchy that the aristocracy was built on did not favor nobility, which created an opportunity for someone who is extremely savvy with money/bribery (Giovanni/Cosimo) and PR (Cosimo) to take center stage. This sort of thing did not happen in places with established monarchies such as England or France, as the systems were fundamentally different.
      But yes, modern day American politics allow for private lobbying, which is essentially legal corruption in many cases. Pair that with the fact that the banks have a stranglehold on the mechanisms by which the financial system operates and you have a recipe for bankers ruling from behind the curtain.

    I am blood related to the Medici royal family. I know that everyone thinks that the blood line is gone but the Medici royal family uses a different last name. The Medici royal family is now the DiLorenzo family. This is because in the 1700's there were no males to carry on the Medici name to the next generation. The last generation of the Medici royal family were all female and they branched out to marrying into different families. It was my great great great grandfather who married into the Medici royal family and changed the Medici name to DiLorenzo. It's funny how my family whom is the DiLorenzo family and was once the Medici royal family lives on Long Island New York instead of staying in Italy.

    6:48 not factually correct. Pope Leo was Cosimo’s great grandson. Cosimo->Piero->Lorenzo the Magnificent->Pope Leo.
    Pope Clement was the illegitimate son of Lorenzo the Magnificent’s brother, Giuliano de Medici (killed in Pazzi Conspiracy in 1478). Also means he’s a great grandson of Cosimo.

    This was a terribly researched video with a number of inaccuracies. I believe somebody already mentioned that Pope Clement VII was not a son of Lorenzo, but his brother. You really glossed over the influence Lorenzo had and his role cementing the family's influence. You also did not mention his mother, who played an important role in the Medici's rise, neither did you mention their ability to enter the nobility through the marriages and alliances they made. You also don't cover their rise again after retaking Florence.

    • @tomhidley6763
      @tomhidley6763 2 роки тому

      I’d say that’s a little harsh. It’s just a brief overview for someone new to the history. I will say though that I agree the video portrays Lorenzo as merely a weaker successor to Cosimo, which couldn’t be further from the truth. He solidified the medici as the central political dynasty of Italy and expanded upon his predecessors development of the arts and culture. Not to mention his complete control of Florence.

    The pictures that you are associating with the commentary are incorrect. When talking about Giovanni, you are showing a picture of Cosimo. When talking of Cosimo, you are showing a picture of Lorenzo the Magnificent (his grandson).

    Did she mistake Lorenzo the Elder for Lorenzo the Magnificent? "When male descendants of Cosimo died off, the male heirs of his brother Lorenzo took over and began a new branch of the Medici dynasty." Pretty sure Pope Leo X and Clement VII were both great-grandsons of Cosimo de' Medici and grandsons to his son and heir Piero the Gouty. Pieros two sons fathered the Medici Florentine popes. Lorenzo the Magnificent was the father of Pope Leo X and Giuliano de' Medici father of Clement VII.

    In this case, I say yes. The end justifies the means. Look at the architecture and works of art we are left with today. I don't know what really happened then; no one knows all the ins and outs and thought processes of men's minds of the day, not really. I know how a man can become envious of others' wealth and prestige, especially earned through their own work ( honest or not) and how so-called noble families can begrudge this due to their own self-entitlement. We see it all the time, and it exists today.
    The Medici popes? That was a smart business move, yes, business. The church was a place to climb up the ladder for prestige and wealth; make no mistake, it had nothing to do with saving souls. It was a joke, and only the nieve would believe otherwise.
