I have come to the conclusion that not getting injured and staying healthy & safe is more important or just as important as intelligence, effort, consistency, diet, sleep etc.

That’s been the mindset I’ve shifted to lately, injury prevention has officially taken priority over everything else, the other stuff will only work if you’re healthy and injury free.

I agree 1000%...NOT getting hurt keeps you in the game working out on a regular basis. Risking a potential injury so you can say "I got 11 reps" instead of a solid hard set of 9 ...or throwing on an extra 20 lbs on the bar when you shouldnt have makes no sense to me...like...who cares?
Work out hard but smart and it keeps you in the game. Cant get a great pump when you blew your knees or back or shoulders out goin for "1 more rep"

Sometimes settling in one area can lead to greater success in your general live. For example: languages! You could spend 20 years on learning one language to get to a native speaker level or you could settle for a 90%-Level in more or less 5 years, which would in every scenario of live suffice and go on to study 3 different languages in same time frame you'd get on native level. There plenty different examples to this.

To me it’s just that after training for 5-6 years now, lifting weights has just become a hobby. I have more important goals in my life to me now that the gym has just become an accessory to keep me in shape.
I still push for PRs and try new regimes out, but I’m much more focused on having a good workout than killing myself to add 30lbs to my bench.
I think the biggest reliever for me was running. I like to combine running and the gym to become an all round athlete and not just a dude who lifts weights. I think it’s all about where your priorities in life lie. I’ve just cane to realise that I liked the gym because I’m competitive and have always been into sports. So looking the biggest and lifting the heaviest has just become less important over time. Now I’m more focused on health, longevity and training to be one a better athlete.

This is a good mindset. I have some goals in the gym and when I hit them lifting will take a backseat to other fitness goals. Strength training will always be important for many reasons but that extra 15% of strength and muscle it’d take a decade to grind out isn’t worth it when you can go see 100% improvements in other untrained areas.

That's a key distinction though, improvement VS elite strength. Increasing "strength" is a way of improving but it's a blanket term, it's not necessarily the goal though it's often an unavoidable and beneficial result anyway. Focus on improving something...either reps, sets, time, rest, flexibility... whatever (yes, doing better in those means you got stronger by some definition), but don't tie your time to maximal tonnage. The diminishing returns and fact that you can't do it indefinitely starts approaching injury territory the avg person doesn't need to be near. The avg person doesn't lift, maybe we focus on improving and being fit, not fitness gods. Also, when you get older you'll likely sing a different tune when you realize you can't increase tonnage anymore and have a minor identity crisis in figuring out why you're at the gym anymore.

When i started i litteraly couldnt unrack the bar, skinnyfat, machine shoulder press i couldnt even do the lightest weight for 3x10.
Kept pushing because i hated being insanely weak for daily life, now im goaling for 160kg bench, but in the back of my mind i am already thinking about those magic 4 plates 180, i know not 4 plates in lbs but heck, someday il get that to, because everytime i went and trained bench even before i could do 1plate each side, i was already thinking about 100 for a single.
Same goes for box squats/squats/ssb/deadlift etc.etc.

One of your best videos, Alex.
Some months ago I quoted Epictetus' "Enchiridion" on one of your videos (maybe you don't remember), because his writings were very similar to your thoughts. Now I'm doing it again, but another excerpt (chapter 29). It's kind of a long paragraph, but it sure is worthwhile. Both of you speak a very similar language, man. As I said before, he who thinks weightlifting and philosophy are different sides of a coin is deadly wrong...
    Here's the quote:
"29.1. In every affair consider what precedes and follows, and then undertake it. Otherwise you will begin with spirit; but not having thought of the consequences, when some of them appear you will shamefully desist.
29.2 [You might say] "I would conquer at the Olympic games." But consider what precedes and follows, and then, if it is for your advantage, engage in the affair. You must conform to rules, submit to a diet, refrain from dainties; exercise your body, whether you choose it or not, at a stated hour, in heat and cold; you must drink no cold water, nor sometimes even wine. In a word, you must give yourself up to your master, as to a physician. Then, in the combat, you may be thrown into a ditch, dislocate your arm, turn your ankle, swallow dust, be whipped, and, after all, lose the victory.
29.3 When you have evaluated all this, if your inclination still holds, then go to war. Otherwise, take notice, you will behave like children who sometimes play like wrestlers, sometimes gladiators, sometimes blow a trumpet, and sometimes act a tragedy when they have seen and admired these shows. Thus you too will be at one time a wrestler, at another a gladiator, now a philosopher, then an orator; but with your whole soul, nothing at all. Like an ape, you mimic all you see, and one thing after another is sure to please you, but is out of favor as soon as it becomes familiar. For you have never entered upon anything considerately, nor after having viewed the whole matter on all sides, or made any scrutiny into it, but rashly, and with a cold inclination.
29.4 Thus some, when they have seen a philosopher and heard a man speaking like Euphrates (though, indeed, who can speak like him?), have a mind to be philosophers too.
29.5 Consider first, man, what the matter is, and what your own nature is able to bear. If you would be a wrestler, consider your shoulders, your back, your thighs; for different persons are made for different things. Do you think that you can act as you do, and be a philosopher? That you can eat and drink, and be angry and discontented as you are now? You must watch, you must labor, you must get the better of certain appetites, must quit your acquaintance, be despised by your servant, be laughed at by those you meet; come off worse than others in everything, in magistracies, in honors, in courts of judicature.
29.6 When you have considered all these things round, approach, if you please; if, by parting with them, you have a mind to purchase equanimity, freedom, and tranquillity. If not, don't come here; don't, like children, be one while a philosopher, then a publican, then an orator, and then one of Caesar's officers. These things are not consistent. You must be one man, either good or bad. You must cultivate either your own ruling faculty or externals, and apply yourself either to things within or without you; that is, be either a philosopher, or one of the vulgar."
    Salute!

Love the video alex, some hard truths that people need to hear. Personally, I am very happy with my physique and my strength BUT I treat training as a sport so I continuously want to improve, I want to hit those PRs because its how I play the sport and it's very satisfying.I know that if I quit training I will feel like dog shit since its needed to be healthy so I taught myself to love training by treating it this way.

Great topic. Let me state a personal observation, I have NEVER known anyone on a very advanced/elite level of strenth who hasn`t had some kind of an injury over the years. This doesn`t have to be a great injury, mostly bicep tears, back pulls etc. You have to decide for yourself if you are taking that risk or not. You also have to decide whether you want to be a bit more ( or a lot more) banged up than your peers by the time you hit 40. Don`t be delusional in thinking you are going to feel so amazing & joint pain free after decades of chasing strength. If this is your livelihood, perhaps you do want to take that risk. Alex is providing great info, taking into account both sides of the coin.

The hardest thing I've found in 10 years of lifting is trying to be good at multiple disciplines. In order to reach elite strength you can't also be an elite competitor of another sport. Even the top athletes that ONLY train for a living don't become champions of two sports. For regular guys that work, going after elite strength means you give up being good at something else by default. How many elite powerlifters can run 5 miles at even an intermediate pace? Some of them get winded walking up stairs. It takes way more effort and time to go from 400 → 500 Squat than from 45 → 400. This only gets harder and harder the stronger you get.

    • @KC-si8jn
      @KC-si8jn 3 роки тому +2

I realised this early on. That's why I like Crossfit and it's what got me into regular barbel training and exercise. I dont care about Elite performance in a single domain, I'd rather be well rounded. Look at Fergus Crawley ( former elite power lifter) or Adam Klink as a few examples.
I'm only focusing on Strength training/ Powerlifting at the moment to improve my overall crossfit performance and Olympic lifts. I'd be happy with reaching 90th percentile overall ( or average) on BTWB or in the crossfit Open, whereas at 97th + are the Elite competitors and most are naturally gifted and some probably using on top of that. For example being an intermediate for strength in general means advanced or close to 90th percentile for Crossfit, then it's a matter of tiny improvements or maintaining strength while learning other skills and improving metabolic conditioning/endurance. My Deadlift is already top 9 %.

I'm part of the counter-point crowd. For me, the mindset of pushing for elite powerlifting strength created ruin rather than happiness and achievement. At the end of the day working out is a hobby for me and I go to be a little bit better and healthier every day. My end goal isn't elite strength but just being better and pushing further than I think I can. I know that for me, craving elite strength would be settling for less in happiness and that it wouldn't be worth going through just for its own sake. If others have that as that goal, however, then I fully respect their decision and journey.
It's really a matter of what you love and are passionate about. I don't care so much about the big three, but I love weighted callisthenics and I'd always love to get stronger at that. But again, my goal isn't elite strength, just to be stronger, pushing myself further than I think I can.

The gyms in my country closed again and i bought now a rack, a barbell and weights up to 170kgs. Im coming back from a small ankle injury and i am taking one week completely off training to let my body recover. Then i will do a bodybuilding phase where i dont push for prs and just workout in the 6-20 rep range. I am really hyped and excited about it. Also i will do each day bit of cardio, like cycling in the beginning and when my ankle is completely healed, i will start running because i never was a big runner but i like the idea to be able to run 10km. I will experiment a lot but i will do a lot of basics like bench, incline bench, pull ups, rows, ohp, and so on. The Squat will be kinda painful because i really like to squat heavy and push for maxes but for this reason i bought weights below my 1 rep max squat and there i will start with really high rep sets to get my body used to the weight again. But i love lifting and i guess i will spend a lot of time with it but at the moment it is quite difficult to do anything else then work, train and hangout with my family.

Maybe the best thing is to only go after the elite numbers in safe movements. Like I don't train heavy in any leg exercise because I know how shitty it is to have knee pain. Also, I never try to do one rep maxes because that's just a great way to snap shit up. I don't think you can get so strong on overhead pressing that you would snap something so I consider that a safe movement, and the same goes with strict bicep curls, and some other accessory movements.

Because I do shot put (and eventually to professional wrestling entertainment), it is essential for me to get elite strength to get the necessary distances or ability to work in the sport without struggling massively in some areas. In shot put, you need multiple factors such as power, speed and strength to improve your distances for championship or meet competitions.
If you have one or two without the remaining factor, it's going to drag your performance down significantly.
