Worcester Bosch, Greenstar 4,000 unboxing and review. My name's Alan Hart and in today's video we're going to unbox this Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4,000. And we're going to have a look at the boiler, strip it down a little bit, look inside, look at some of the components and... Yeah, if you've got any questions just put on below. And then I'm going to put it on this wall on another video and we'll respond to any of the questions that you have.
The first thing we notice on this box is planet friendly packaging, so obviously this box can be recycled. We'll have look inside. We'll see what other... What that means inside as well. I'd like to thank Heatable. Again, Heatable provided this boiler for us today. Heatable's provided us a lot of boilers now. They've really supported this channel. If you are looking for a new boiler check on their website and it gives you a fixed price for a new boiler.
So yeah, let's take it apart. Let's have a look inside. So I've just removed straps off this. One thing to point out about this boiler is no sharp edges. So Worcester's got a little bit of a reputation of cutting yourself, people that don't wear gloves. We've just got a white panel that's just to hide the pipes at the bottom.
Put that to one side. All this stuff at the top, so we've got the condensate trap up there and then we've got our ErP label. We've got the manufacturing instructions, most important thing of all, we'll have a look at that shortly. And then bit more cardboard. Just turn this round. We got the fixing jig, which is always quite good on a Worcester, to be honest. There's also one thing to point out on this, you get the easy fill on this where you just pull the clip down, but you can also use the auto fill, which I think is really, really good. Haven't seen it on a boiler yet, but maybe we'll get one. Maybe we'll get one and we'll try it on here. But the auto fill will just top the boiler up for the customer. So yeah, that should be really good.
We've got just a few more fittings here. Just take all the cardboard off this. It's a nice looking boiler, if you bothered about how a boiler looks. Some people are, some people aren't. But I don't think anybody can say that... I don't think you can say it don't look nice because it does. But yeah, what I'll do is we'll have look inside it. So as you can see, it's a nice looking boiler. As I say, if you're bothered about what it looks like. If it's in your cupboard, it's not really going to matter. If it's in a the utility room on show, then it's a nice boiler to look at. What I'll do now, we'll remove the case on this. There's just two screws under here that we'll take out and I'll take the case off, take the front off. One thing to point out on this boiler is the low range of this, so the modulation ratio, it goes down to three kilowatts. So with the new Part L regulations, that's going to be really important.
So if you average out, say your three bedroom semi, might only need seven kilowatts, heat loss, but that's at minus two or minus free outside. So when it's just getting into winter, you won't need all that. You might only need three or four kilowatts to heat that house and to keep that house maintained. And obviously now with Part L and all this, we're into trying to save as much money as we can. Well this one will modulate down to three kilowatts, which is really, really good. If you have a look at some of the boilers that you instal, you might find that they don't go low enough. Now I would start asking questions with the manufacturers because I think that's something we need to push the manufacturers into doing. So we need to get these so that they'll work at a lower demand, if you like.
So yeah, I'm babbling on, ain't I? I'll take this case off. So as I say, we've just got two screws underneath and then what we'll do, we'll just have a look inside this boiler. And this is the first Worcester I've... Well I haven't installed it, I've just put on wall. But it's the first one I've done in a lot of years. Many years ago, I used to be a BAI and I used to instal Worcester's every day, loads and loads of Worcester's. But I haven't installed them for a long time. One thing to point out on this, the panels come off on the sides, should you want them to. I think that one would make it easier to get into. This one, I don't think it makes a right lot of difference. And then if we just pull down, we can have a look inside.
Great little boile Allen .. easy to understand and work on plus loads of settings in the menu to match the boiler to the heating load.
Thanks a for your upload. I’ve watched a few videos over the years for boiler info. My Alpha CB24X has broken down for the last time and am having one of these installed. The Alpha is 17-19 years old so it’s done it’s time it’s failed once every few years or so but happy it’s lasted. The company was trying to sell me a WB Ri24w but I wanted one of these. So hopefully it will be the right choice 🤞
If you have auto reffil how do you refill system after it has been drained down due to rad change? Do I have to swich boiler off if I need to keep system empty ?
Hello Allen! Getting ready for winter hear in NY.
Auto fill refills a certain amount of time in a given period based on what you set the system too. It has flood protection so with a leak the pressure sensor will not detect a rise within set period and therefore de-energise the solenoid. It’s not in worcesters interest to have a boiler that keeps topping up. They actually honour their warranty so they don’t want fresh oxygenated water filling up. You can refill using the software, don’t need to take the case off. People should do some research before giving opinions that are wrong in these comments.
Recently had one of these fitted in Jan. Works great. Only concern is when heating is on and then i stop running the hot tap, it briefly makes a loud mechanical noise. I can live with it if i know thats normal. Any more info much appreciated!
Hi I have a greenstar 4000 the thermostat stop working is there any way to switch on the central heating without the thermostat thanks
The 4000 is my favourite in the DNA range. Update from the iERP which was my favourite whilst there
Great video as always. What will be your first choice combi boiler for typical 2 bed room Victorian terrace with one bathroom located as usual next to kitchen and boiler located in kitchen. Thank for your excellent video again.
Hi we recently renovated and the boiler was moved. Now that it is back on the radiators won't turn on. Would you be able to help.
Hi Allen I’m looking at for a new boiler wud u recommend a boiler for 4 bed house wud rather be getting a better quality rather then cheap
HELP
I had low pressure on my Worcester boiler so I opened the filling valves. But then water started pouring out a pipe outside! I put a plastic cap on this pipe outside but now water out the boiler casing!!! Boiler only 2years old do I need a new one?
Do not blank off this is a safety valve discharge! If heat exchanger split? Yes. But hopefully seals blewn.
Get that boiler checked immediately!!
Dear mother of god 🤦🏻♂️
Lol, you've just invalidated the warranty by putting the plastic cap on.
@@oomz1975 it's ok, I picked up another boiler from b and q last week and fitted it, all good now
Better late than never lol 😆 well done Worcester
I've got too high 3bar pressure AND water is dripping from that pipe outside...????

Hi Allen great vid as allways can I ask what do you use to put in the towel rad to keep the rads clean after the new install of the Worcester 4000 many thanks if you answer my question 👍
Inhibitors

Would you range rate on the from 100percent to 50 percent to save the pump and money for the customer or leave at 100 percent and let the boiler sort it self out could you do a full set up the best settings for cheaper bills would be great you are the best on UA-cam 👍
I too was wondering about this range rating too if it means less cycling of the pump... Dropped mine to 60 percent and still nice and toast with adequate hot water.... I assume the range rating effects the hot water too, i am unsure but can't tell any difference.
Any knowledgable plumber would know the answer to this . If you only have 12kw of rads why would you pump 30kw of heat into it.
@Steve N … range rating is just for the heating
@@russthomas02 good to know ;-)
Hello, I wanted to ask a question: In my boiler I hear a bubbling noise as if it is boiling inside the primary exchanger.
Could you please help me understand the problem?
Thank you
Hi, pump failure may cause something like this. The water should not boil if it moves fast enough. In my case replacing the capacitor from the pump solved the issue, but it is better to check as much as you can before starting to replace parts.
ok
until next time
thank you.
Hi, I've had a new Greenstar 4000 boiler installed a month ago. Can you you do a vid on what its supposed to sound like please - I'm not happy with the sounds mine makes but I'm told its normal because the Grundfos pump can be slightly noisy? Thank you.
I will do it as soon as I get the opportunity. Thanks.

Hiya Alan...
As over the summer my gloworm combi boiler has dropped in pressure to 0.8 when I run the hot water it does increase to 1.0 so my question is do i have to open taps to increase to 1.0 b4 I put the central heating on...
Thanks
I'm not Allen, but the answer is no... Your system has lost a little pressure. Top it up with the filling loop, but if it quickly drops again you may either have an under pressurised expansion vessel(pressure quickly increases as temperature rises), a drip on your PRV or a small leak. Then you may need a plumber.
@@SteveN-pw4dj sorry!!! that's what i meant by taps ie the filling loop taps not the hot & cold water taps...
So I do need to increase pressure??
Thanks Steve..👍👍
@@coolerkin yes to 1 bar 😉
@@SteveN-pw4dj thanks for the advice..
Appreciated. 👍👍
Doesn't an auto filling loop just mean you never see a leak?? Not for me i think.
It'll refill 3 times but if it's within a certain time limit that would mean there's a leak then it shuts off
Probably the best boiler for those on a budget. Not as efficient or advanced as a Viessmann 200-W but better than most of the rubbish sold.
Would love to see a comparison between Viessmann and Worcester Bosch's top boilers one day Allen!
i had nothing but issues after 2 years with my viessmann w200 , with constant faults F2 errors every few weeks that were not pressure related, the big breakdown it was at the start of the covid first wave 2 years after install and it broke on a bitter cold night , it was 6 weeks to get the parts (controller) and again it died again two weeks later with a fan issue, again we were told another 6 weeks from viessmann uk to get the modified part. in the end we swapped for a intergas HRE and turned out to be the best boiler I ever had on a reasonable budget, 3 years I lived with it and it didn't miss a beat, granted I had a water softener fitted, after the issue with Viessmann and absolutely terrible uk support (I felt sorry for the plummer especially when trying to get a 3rd party controller working by honeywell ) I will never get one again, they look good, had excellent reviews but in the end it was the biggest turkey I've ever brought
@@ram64man Sounds like you had a terrible example or that something changed and ruined the operation of your V200. The boiler itself has incredible so far but it's still in its first year!
The Intergas boiler is nowhere near as efficient.
@@avivscrewvalla when it was installed it was before the update model we have now with plastic hoses, we pulled out a 1984 glowworm , replaced most of the microbore to 22mm and got it plummer in by a reputable plummer that was gas registered, sadly he has retired now but we know from a 3rd party after constant breakdowns that it was nothing to do with the install but the machine its self, in the first year it broke down 5 times mainly with f2 e2 and intermittent fan, what made it worse is most of the summer it was off only boosting water but as soon as heat was required not once did vismann offer a replacement even though it was a vismann installed plummer. in the end the controller and fan were replaced, yes the intergas wasn't able to modulate as low, but we had a honewell smart system and honestly day to day in winter the house needed 5-6kwh anyway and our gen 1 smart metre (part of the uk pilot then before rollout) showed it used almost the same amount of gas, i think there was about 18 btu difference by the end of the month and more importantly while were were still there it was absolutely flawless. now Im back in the USA I've gone down the wet HT airsource (that couldn't cope with the demand for heat without using the direct water heater unit, so we upgraded to air to air as well and only use the wet to supplement heat and hot water,
if I had known I would have gone down the air to air route or get a us direct heat propaine heater and saved 14000 dollars on copper pipe and install (it wasn't easy I tell you ripping out the ducting that failed inspection) electric that first year went through the roof
@@ram64man As I said, sounds like a faulty example that was installed. I hear only good things from installers but I'm shocked to read about how poor it behaved. The new V200 has zero plastic hoses - all copper. I can only hope they've learnt from their mistakes! In our home, it modulates down to 2.5 kWh which is where it settles to provide very comfortable heating.
Hello Alan, how much is it?
Not sure I like the idea of the auto fill fillinglink if you get a leak it will just keep putting water into the system
Its nearly as bad as a header tank
@@LabRat6619 Yeah exactly imagine coming home after a 2 week holiday to that mess
It’s got a limit on it that you can adjust
It won't continually refill. Will stop after x amount of times. Shit design. Coz when it comes to that point the cover needs taking off to be reset. Dumb idea.
@@lucasuk86 still don't like the idea unless there's a leak the system shouldn't need topping up so I'd rather know it's lost pressure
hi , has anyone any ideas on my previous comment i posted yesterday , Last night the heating came on at these times 12;47 1;03 1;18 1:33 1:47 2;03 2:18 2:33 2;47 then i must have fell asleep , surly this is not normal if the timer is set to come on only at 5:30-6:30 am , the gas engineer said its normal for the heating to do this and told me to use the thermostat to control the temperature before i go to bed so its not warm , its never done this before ,, any ideas please , thanks
Not a gas engineer but does anyone think the electric cabling liok like an afterthought. Just cabled anywhere, some touching metal components which I presume might get hot? Woukd tou expect such cabling in a car engine bay or a box that shoukd last 10 plus years
Not a bad boiler all in all, diverter isn’t as good as previous models, stepper motor was a lot more reliable👍🏻
I had quite a few where the motor arm was breaking off from the spindle. Have you had that issue?
@@kevincranfield5235 I’ve had quite a few of them. I used to be a Worcester field engineer. Only really bad problem I’ve had on them
As an installer I feel Worcester boilers are the worst to fit, but great video 👍🏻👊🏼
What would you say are the best out of Baxi vs WB vs Ideal, for install and the customer?
Anyone have any ideas on what wrong with my worcester greenstar 28i junior,I have the timer set for 5;30 am -6;30am but the heating comes on at all times of day and night its never did this before so i called out the gas engineer and he said its meant to do that , but i said it never has and he replied you probably never noticed it ,I also asked if maybe the timer switch was faulty or the diverter valve was blocked but he said a combi boiler does not have a valve in it , So he said i had to work away with the thermostat and turn it down at night before going to bed so its not warm , whats the point of having a timer set for a time and temperature if i have to adjust it in the morning , something must be wrong with it as the radiators shoudn't be warm when the heating is off ,Its so annoying as i know the radiators are only on when the timer comes on but it was like talking to a brick wall when i spoke to him , Its burning gas i cant afford to if its on and off all day and night , i would appreciate any ideas on whats wrong , many thanks
Just had one fitted it’s so quiet
Auto fill fills once in a set period. So not designed to keep filling up. It’s actually better than having a manual fill. Cus customer can keep filling Willy nilly. It’s designed to refill on a one off occasion ie a customer bleeding a rad.
So which occasion does the boiler choose to auto fill 🤷🏻♂️ and how does it differentiate between a tenant bleeding a rad and a leaky fitting
@@dowser81 you set a min set pressure think default is 0.6bar so only if it drops below this will the solenoid energise to get you up to your target set pressure say 1.3 bar. But if the pressure sensor does not detect a rise in pressure of 0.1bar in 30 sec period it will de-energise the solenoid as interprets you have a leak. Problem comes when installers spec the auto fill with poor mains pressure, it will take so long to fill it will think there’s a leak but there isn’t. It’s just taking ages to fill cus the pressure off the mains is so poor and can’t overcome to 2 check valves in the filling loop itself.
@@stevesanders4071 makes sense thanks for explaining 👍🏼
Unfortunately ,some of 4000serie are fitted with Taco pumps not Grundfos including your s on the wall
Have you heard of issues with them
@@AllenHart999 hi Allen, the technic. from WB said they had to fitted taco pumps from last year as lack of supply from Grundfos pumps, only time will prove the reliability, thanks for your reply and have a nice day, regard Libor
Not for Allen they have not changed enough for me. Shit heat exchanger and bad plastic blocks. Thanks Allen top video as usual.
Agreed Peter
The greenstar 2000 and 4000 range are no longer available for parts. If its under warranty then you get them to deal with it but those boilers are now made in Poland. I've had nothing but problems with them. Mainly the pumps.
How come WB are stating this online "The Worcester Bosch 4000 boiler range is the latest boiler to hit the shelves from the best boiler brand in the UK. This gas combi boiler has been one of the best-selling combis in the UK since its launch in 2021" I was thinking of getting this boiler through BOXT but now a bit confused.
How to turn off the boiler
Switch on wall.
Thank You
hi Allen, i have chance of 8000 35 KW boiler a lot cheaper than a 4000 25KW although the 4000 is well large enough for us it will be more expensive WHAT WHOULD YOU DO. cheers Mick.
Do you need 35w in the home domestic hot water demand as home heating will be the same. Wonder if longer warranty 12 over 10 is that useful for the 8000 come 12 years when gas boilers that can only burn 20% hydrogen will be obsolete in terms of parts supply and engineer skillset, assuming such gas boilers are still serviced at all. Worth looking if you could moderate the 8000 output to the same as a 24kw and less stress on the 8000 and perhaps the 8000 has more flexibility to moderate Vs the 4000
Hate Worcester bosch. They make a boiler unbelievably complicated, for a device that only heats and pumps water.
Expensive replacement parts is their goal.
Reliable boiler for the majority, heavy clever marketing puts them top place by consumers. Dreadful to service properly and thoroughly.
As a Worcester guy said they only service properly after 5 years when the flue flow is poor, meaning by the 3rd service a new boiler is required.
This us not within our professional ethics.
Our No1 combi is Intergas Rapid installed since 2006.
These can be thoroughly serviced and need to be every 1 or 2 years easily done.
Good efficiency, reliability and with a Smart Wiser and open therm 😁 job done.
We are reluctantly quoting a Worcester only because
I show customers the inside of Worcesters, Vaillants, Viessmanns compared to Intergas. Less to go wrong no complicated bits and bobs.
Rip it apart Allen, but an old dirty one would be best, then see if it works without any leaks.
My previous worcester had 2 call outs in 22 years.not at all bad.I rate them, but you do pay a premium.
For the more budget conscious I did put an order in for a baxi 624,a lot of it down to watching allens vids on boiler teardowns and other engineers views on reliabiltiy/servicability.Got a very good price on that.
If I had the extra cash then I would probably go worcester again but times are not as easy as they used to be.Maximum bang for the buck is king now.
Sounds like you hate it just because you don’t understand it. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I have worked on loads over the years I find them easy to work on and the ones I have installed I have not had any major issues with some are 15 years + now I think ther great boilers
@@charliewillis8527 each to their own really. Practice makes perfect. Just think there’s more to ‘heating up water’ now, those days are over. Boilers need to modulate and condense to keep as efficient as possible. We as engineers have to understand that.
