We have the Swift 560 with the Alde central heating and love it. Yes even the colour scheme, Dan.... There’s just me, the misses and our Westie (Mac). This is our 2nd season with it and like yourselves we searched for a few months during the winter of 2016/17 looking for the perfect combination. My only regret is that we never went for the twin axle version of this van as the extra space in the mid bathroom would have been great, but at the time we purchased our van the larger one was not available in the Challenger range. Good luck in finding....”the one” that’ll give you all many more years of happiness. And the vlogs are always great 👍🏻

Well Dan, at the end of this vid you look and sound how I’ve felt in the past at the end of a day caravan shopping at the NEC show. Well done for being so open and honest in your search, good luck 👍

To be fair, we were done by the end of this video. It was simply too hot for it.
An update video will be coming soon on our "finalists"
      Hope you are all well.

We bought our van from Salop Leisure and their dealer special (Celeste) based on the Swift Challenger. They do the same layout you like, it does come with the Alde wet heating as well as ATC. The one gripe I have is the 2 USB sockets are by the side of the radio so I use a multi port USB charger and use one of the mains sockets at the front.

I concur the layout of the Swift was the best. You and your family will find the right caravan, keep your chin up 😊

Don't forget to look at all the dealer specials. When we first started caravan hunting it was a nightmare until we realised the majority are the same van but with the dealers brand name on it. Obviously they include a lot of extras and different trim levels too. We spent weekends travelling around the country looking at different dealers until we found our caravan that worked and suited us. We live in Nottingham not far from Kimberley Caravans (which are brilliant btw) but ended up buying from Leeds caravan centre. They couldn't believe we'd driven up there and brought one of their caravans but as we pointed out to them "it's the one for us!" Incidentally our caravan started out as a Salop Leisure special !!
Don't get disheartened the right one is out there!
    Good luck in your quest!

Hi Dan. Well it seems you have found the layout you like. Can you not find that layout in one of Swift’s more premium brands? Also many dealers use Swift for their Dealer specials, so if you don’t like the standard colour schemes you may well find what you like down the Dealer Special route. You should be able to get a good deal at this time of year. Good luck. Steve.

The Swift Eccles 635 Has the layout you like, Alde wet central heating and a higher trim level than the Vogue. Add the lux pack for £550 and you get few nice to haves. As for USB points, I just use a single 230V USB charge bank with 6 outputs. I'm considering adding some USB outlet in the blanks.

Hi Dan, I would echo what David Bell said, it is an entry level ‘van so you do sacrifice the big ticket items like dual fuel hobs, and alde wet heating etc, but look at what you get for £18,000 a brand new twin axle ‘van with a stunning layout and in all fairness pretty good spec levels, front sunroof decent alloys, microwave etc, its a bargain and I agree with others if this floats your boat use the savings to do the upgrades even reupholster if necessary and then you will have “your” caravan specced to your taste and needs and you will still probably have spent the same as some of the others but you have removed the compromises that you would otherwise have made. Been a great series really enjoyed it can’t wait to hear your decision on your new caravan 👍

Great to read people’s different opinions on various design points! We have a dealer Special based on a sprite and we absolutely love it! We are not at all bothered by USB points as we just take our normal chargers to plug in! Ours is a fairly bright colour scheme but it’s exactly what we wanted, a modern bright look. They do come with reading lights BTW, just not movable ones. We actually find the kitchen shelf useful to put things on to free up space that would otherwise be taken up on the actual worktop, we do get the wire hanging down though but once we push the kettle back in the corner it’s barely noticeable. Great to see your opinions though Dan and there is absolutely no point in people taking them personally as it’s all down to personal taste! I looked at Lunars local to ya and just hated all of them! Hope you find “the one” soon 👍🏻

Hi Dan, I think you may like the Swift Eccles 635, it has the same layout as the ones you liked on this video but with a bit more kit and better colour scheme. We didn't go for it due to being new to caravaning and didn't want to tow a double axle.

I have a 2017 Swift Challenger 580 with the same colour scheme and I absolutely love it, it's an absolutely delightful van, and nothing has broken since I took delivery of it, I can't fault it, it doesn't bother me that it doesn't have any USB ports.
I was more pissed off at the fact that it didn't have a leisure battery when I picked it up at the dealers, I had to pay £120 for a decent battery, and it also had no jacking brackets or jack.
If you pay £20,000 for a caravan you would expect it to have a battery and the means to change a flat tyre, these are the things I'd be concerned about, not USB ports!.

We had a Bessacarr and a Swift Bessacarr. Preferred the non swift version for all sorts of small picky things (quality issues with Swift). Saying that we had it 9yrs and then bought the Bessacarr E710 MH which was a similar layout :-)

Hi Dan Love the video's just like to throw in my tuppence worth and say that i find todays caravans all feel a little cramped inside. We have a 2012 sterling eccles Amethyst twin axle 6 berth although theres only three of us it has the side dinnette layout which gives extra seating and massive kitchen area a corner bed and corner shower/toilet wet room.partitioning of the bed area still gives a large open plan feel wouldn't change the layout for anything. Sure it doesn't have usb's and some of the gadgetry of todays vans but they can be added easily enough at resonable cost. Good luck in your quest i'm sure you'll be compromising somewhere.

So onto the budget selection you did say you would look so how about starting with Caravelairs (Marquis dealership all around the country) Great reviews by caravan magazine etc. Check out UA-cam and Marquis . We have one and yes we compromised on some issues but i'm sure you will. Please to say 90% it works for us big beds and dinette and tv brackets installed at the factory ours is the 496 now totally different due to all being changed to UK spec

Hi dan we bought our swift challenger in January 2017 and was a 2016 van, but we got a good deal on it. We love our challenger great layout for us (fixed bunks - have young kids). I totally agree with your point re the spec level on sprite. We could of got exact same layout in sprite but the spec was so much better in the challenger. Good luck with your search, not great in these high temperatures 😅

Totally with you on the daft floating shelf in the Sprite and the cables, a simple cable access point (aka HOLE) to pass the wire through (or move the sockets down but that's a cost)

We understand your situation regarding the lack of toys and hideous colour scheme of the sprites. We are currently debating what van to go for next the problem is the last two Van's we have had have both been flagship models ( corniche ,conqueror ) and now a small person entered our lives we don't have a big budget. We are considering a 4 year old elegance or conqueror .it maybe worth considering as they come with all the specs you want and hopefully near budget.

I am feeling your pain in the search for the new wobble box. Like a layout but colours wrong, like the colours but the toilet is on the wrong side, toilet on the right side but the wrong colour & around we go. Surely there is place in the market for a manufacturer who is willing to supply an interior colour choice as with cars. Don't give up. Regards Nick

Perhaps the route that we took to get our latest caravan, may help. We looked at the new caravans in our price range and didn't find anything we liked. So, then we look at the higher spec'd caravans that were a couple of years old. May even be cheaper than the ones you have looked at. Alternatively, there is always the trailer tent. LOL

Dan I’m sure you have but I will ask anyway, have you done your research on the swift Sprites ? I love Swift on my second one but my best friend had aChallenger Sport Hi-Style based on Sprite & you could write a book with the issues, he had a brand new one at that. Seriously look at the 2015 Elegance 630 in Stowford caravans Combe Martin they are rare 2015 model has best upholstery & it will make you feel special when you sit in it. By the way I have absolutely nothing to do with Stowford I live miles away I saw it on ebay & your X5 should tow it no probs. I don’t want you to spend lots of money on something new & then have issues, you seem like a really nice family & deserve the best.

It crossed my mind, that maybe now that Swift seems to be the nearest, maybe time to look on their site for config options. The price is similar to the last two you were in. That dark and light Grey seems to be part of this year's spring collection, because they are all that colour by default, but there is a choice of others each of which still keep the price below 20k.
Strangely in the 'configure your own' part, you still don't get a USB option, everything from add solar to cameras and remote parking, but no USB.
And anyway, we are not talking, I thought for a moment "At last they have seen sense and are getting a tent".

Hi Dan from 🇨🇦 I’ve often commented on Andrew’s channel and asked questions about how your caravans are fitted. I agree with your frustration - selection, quality, prices and availability are much worse in Canada 👎. I ended up buying “Bertie”..a vintage 1975 fiberglass trailer that is better designed than anything currently on the market in the couples lite category and she weights 1,000 pounds soaking wet and cost 1/3 the price! Shopping here for a caravan would send you and Angela to the pub before lunch. Anxious to see what unit you end up with and why. Cheers! 🍻

As a 33 year old owner of a Challenger 524, the fabrics and layouts of most English vans take account of the wide range of ages and tastes. I feel they're trying to keep the style 'classic' and limit premature aging and killing secondhand market value. The layouts are tried and tested - I've seen the wild Knaus and Adria layouts in the tradeshows - they're great, clever, innovative etc, but there's a reason they're all knocking out the classic layouts.

I hope you are passing all your comments on to the manufacturers. What we as a family are looking for in a caravan, eg trim, colour schemes etc, as I don't think they do enough market research as to what the consumer requires. Also why not have 2 or even 3 colour schemes per caravan for that little bit extra and for those who are willing to wait a couple of weeks. I find that most of the new caravans are very much samey samey, just a different name. If you ever find the perfect van it will be a miracle. Why not draw what you want and pass it over to the manufacturers or sit down with them and talk through it. Even consider a survey on here and see what you can come up with. Good luck guys. Isn't Chloe blossoming just now. Quite the young lady x

I'm so glad you got a look at the Swift Vogue 635 EB for it's layout, it's perfect! You also pointed out everything that put me off it too lol Being a dealer special, they were offering some fantastic bundles too but the lounge didn't feel big enough for me, shower cubicle wasn't big enough either (which I use rather than site facilities) It would have been a massive step down from my current 2011 Elddis Crusader Supersirocco.
But a transverse island bed in it's own room is a fantastic layout! Swift/Sprite got it spot on. Just need to put it in a higher end van and they're on to a winner

So far only Adria have offered anything remotely different. All the others are made of the same finish, Victoria Sponge Board of similar colours, same electrical kits & traditionally ‘Heritage’ layouts. It’s underlined the doldrums that the English caravanning sector have been stuck in for years.

Bit strong on the interior colours dan, could make people feel upset who like me own a caravan described by my friends has being a bit boardroom burgandy. :-) or even a motorbike I once owned has being a bit john major grey. :-) only kidding dan, :-) been loving this caravan search series of vids by you and your lovely family. The thing is dan, I think you found a caravan which you reviewed a while back, the new bailey pheonix 640, usb, tick, boss bed for you and your better half, tick, can walk round said bed so no climbing over each other during the night, oooohh matron. Tick. Tv connection times two including tv shelf, tick. Longish front sitting area for your daughter, tick, great food prep area, tick. Lots of stowage under the fixed bed, tick. Microwave not over cooker, one of your pet hates, tick. Errr thats it I think, interiour colour scheme, errrr a bit john major grey. :-) but are'nt they all that colour the last ten years plus. Few scatter cushions from b&m, sorted, tick. Thanks for your efforts dan bringing us these great videos. Vinny. Link to bailey pheonix 640 review. m.ua-cam.com/video/OMflj191SfE/v-deo.html

Hi Dan, I notice you're looking at caravans of a certain size / weight. Is that a coincidence or is it a limitation of your tow car / license? I'm restricted to a 3.5 tonne setup (thanks DVLA!!!) so I went for a super light (980kg) Venus. I'd never heard of them but I discovered they are made by Lunar. Have you looked at Venus as a brand? With us being unconventional, to be honest non of these caravans do anything for us. I think you might be too rational about all this. I dont think there is a science to caravans. You just have to go with your heart. I also think you’re thinking too much about cash. If your not too inspired, then try off the mainstream. Ive already said Eriba, but also airstream or event a motorhome. They might be more expensive but if you love your van you’ll probably keep it for many years and you’ll get your money back eventually. Ours is a 20 year old van next year and we have had it 6 years. We will probably sell it when we are too old to use it and not before. The more expensive vans are often beautifully made and they will probably last you 20 years if given TLC. If I had the money I would get the new Eriba rockabilly or ocean drive Troll 530.
I hope this helps from Rod & Julie x

You Can never find everything you wish for in a caravan you have to make compromise...you always have the solution to keep your caravan and set up a tent for clhoe or she Can sleep in the auwning like your son use to do. You said you were going to look at second hand caravan but we only Saw you looking at brand new caravan so far. I like watching your vidéos Dan but lately i have got the feeling that you are using your popularity on UA-cam to get à great discount from à caravan dealership.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 років тому +1

Hi Gaëtan, thanks for the comment. We are in exactly that phase right now - compromises and weighing up the pros and cons.
As for looking at only new caravan - we still have yet to decide if we are going new or 2nd hand. Our rational for only looking at new is we don't want t base our opinion on the condition of a caravan. Like the Coachman in Highbridge for example.
As for getting a discount from a dealership - i have so far turned down 4 offers of heavily discounted caravans, This is our holiday home, not a business venture, its important that I can still get away in our van with a clear conscious and if i don't feel the need, I don't need to film.
I hope that helps - I think our next wave of videos will make more sense, as we revisit some of the caravans, look closer at the technical specs and delve into the 2nd hand market.

If that Swift suits your lay-out requirements and is relatively cheap, cannot you afford to buy it, Then have the seats re-covered and the curtains replaced? Surely that would be affordable, given the overall price? PS I liked the colour-scheme which horrified you better than most - dark seats show wear less and one is not forever worrying about the odd scuff of mud, etc. But that's just taste, my original point stands. Cheers and thanks.

Saying a colour scheme is awful or horrendous or whatever word you used is bit much. It's taste yet you talk like it's an objective truth. I know what you mean is "We / I don't like it" but the way you say it could offend folks who like and bought that colour scheme and it may be their pride and joy.

      Hi Lee,
Its really funny how everyone agreed with my comments about other manufacturers, yet don't agree with the same comments on this particular one. Perhaps the Swift colours are far more polarising? Maybe its a genuine marmite moment.
Colours are always going to be the contentious issue - trust me what Ive heard about the Unicorns are nothing compared to my thoughts on some of the swift colours. And for me its a real shame as I really do like the layouts of the Swift range.
If nothing else, its stimulated a conversation and created some interaction.
      Take care

I don't really have an opinion on the actual colour scheme. My only problem is the wording. And I perhaps wouldn't have an issue id a UA-camr with 20 followers used that wording. But you are the big dawg in caravanning youtube land so I can imagine hearing you slam a caravan someone bought and loves could hurt. Peter Parker uncle knew what he was talking about. I appreciate it's a casual in the moment chat which is good, but difficult to pick words sensitively.

Lee Smith I must admit I liked the first colour scheme. Personally rather than say it's awful, I would say it's not to our taste.

The Challenger 635 might suit. There are around 5 different fabric options. Would go great with a BMW X5.

Ha, yes indeed - we did look at the various ranges and fabric options on the 635, that might be an update video ;-)
5 series will tow a 635 with no issues - Ive already looked into that one too.

Just read the comments on here. (someone people eh) If I was spending £20k or more I would want it to be perfect too. The right colour, tv brackers and lots of USB points and a big bed, I too am a big chap.. Really enjoy your videos, as I am new caravaning. so dont listen to negative comments. Just means your doing something right if you're upsetting people. So carry on my friend. AND buy a twin alxe Swift caravan, Honestly you'll be super happy with it.

  • @davidmbell
    @davidmbell 6 років тому +2

It's a bit unfair to complain at no USBs in an entry level van, be it dealer special or not, at that price point its a lot of van for your money. Want USB move up a level and pay more. The entry level 'vans can't have every possible thing, or they won't be entry level. Just sayin...

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 років тому

Yep - we looked at a higher level, again not there. Its nota huge issue, as the blanking plates are there and that is a very easy job for me to do.
But, on a swift entry level van - they had TV brackets next to the TV antenna outlets... and although some of the spec is lower, its easily added back in.

David Bell, a twin USB socket can be purchased for about £10.00. I don't think it unreasonable for a couple to be installed at manufacture, entry level caravan or not. Just my opinion.

    • @davidmbell

But where does just £10 here for this and £10 here for that start and stop? I say lose the designer floating shelf and fit 6 USB’s, 2 front 2 middle 2 back ?

Why have Swift used the Sprite brand? 30 years ago (plus) it was known as cheap and horrible. On the other hand Swift were known as Luxury???????

Felt i had to give a thumbs down as we have a swift siena 4eb with the red and grey colour scheme and to hear its horrendous to you is not nice.you are perfectly entitled to your opinion but mb sometimes you could keep it off camera.ive found your videos helpful but to poopoo based on your opinion is wrong.just saying

    • @TheTrudgians

      Hi Tom,
no problem, but remember that is exactly the purpose of these videos. To express my opinion. If i were to remove my, Angela & Chloes opinion then there would be no videos as we search for a caravan - because its 100% our opinion.
That colour scheme would not work for me, but its fine for you, and will be just as fine for someone else, don't take it personally. i don't.
Take care. (PS i also hate black cars.. I had done, nightmare to keep clean lol)

Dan we actually looked at the sprite major 4eb in scotland which had a different colour scheme, green yellow and gold which we didnt like but i would never describe as horrendous.wish you luck in your search but sometimes a compromise must be reached

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  6 років тому +1

i think your right - never had this much of an issue the last time we searched for a caravan. a list of compromises is vast looming i think. So far, however the Swift is streets ahead in terms of what we want / what we like - the colour is the sticking point though. You'll see an update video soon ;-)
      Take care
