- Commonly 0b5 transmission problems occur when the mechatronics fitted to the DL501 Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) becomes faulty. The Audi gearbox malfunction warning and EPC warning light will often show and symptoms such as no gear selection, loss of certain gears, harsh/jerky changes and limp mode will begin to occur.
We see a vast amount of Audi S Tronic DSG mechatronic units in for repair with various fault codes ranging from P17D8 - Torque Limitation Due To Clutch Temperature, P17D6 - Clutch 1 Pressure Too High and P17D7 - Clutch 2 Pressure Too High to P0726 - RPM Signal Of Engine Control Unit (Implausible Signal), P173C - Valve 1 In Sub-gearbox 1 (Electrical Fault) and P173F - Valve 2 In Sub-gearbox 1 (Electrical Fault)
Common Failure Symptoms:
No reverse gear
No gears above 1st/ Not changing gear
Gears sticking
No gears at all
Limp home mode
Harsh gear change
Jerking / behaving erratically

I don't know who in Volkswagen group asked the engineers to use such a large hybrid circuit (based on ceramic substrate) to use it in car transmission where the vibrations are too much. I know ceramic have better heat dissipation than a FR4 PCB but they can't handle vibrations if it's not attached properly and also it has to be hermetically sealed.

This week epc came on with Stabilization programe fault - see owners manul ,parking break makfunction and Gearbox Malfunction - you can continue driving
Took it too garage ( indy )
He scanned it and cleared the codes ( didnt get the exact codes from him ,but he didnt seem concerned,said i can continue driving ,even long distance)
Got the car back - no error showing
After driving a little the same GB Malf message came on - then off again Whilst still driving
I am based in thailand so any info about what i should do next gratefully appreciated

Hi, Tim, I have an Audi Q5 2009 just got it about 2 days and the Gears are a bit Harsh and Jerky as you said, and sometimes when you stop the Engine cut out it will restart ok. when you put it in gear if you are too Quick Between forward and reverse it goes in limp home mode do you have a rough cost to fix them and I am in Australia have you done one from there Thanks, Mark

bought my s3 and it’s stage 1 but not sure if tcu is tuned .. i have some issues with mu transmission when i pull off and it changes gear it sometimes have like a jerk in the shift but mostly in low rpm so only when i pull of .. doesn’t happen when i put mu foot down all the way .. any help please?
A tcu tune would probably help but I would definitely change the transmission fluid or get it looked it

How similar is the Porsche PDK mechatronics unit to the Audi? Specifically talking the Macan and the Panamera.
I have a 2018 macan and the internal are identical to a DL501 only the casing and rear tail are different! I have the parts illustrated manual and the parts star with 0B5! Don’t let Porsche fool you! The macan is running on an old transmission! DSG-7 until 2018 and then a DSG-8
I have an A5 V6 tdi with S-tronic 7speed. My problem is, that when car is stationary and I select "D", and take my foot off the breakpedal the car tends to "jump" forward and sometimes the engine stalls and go off even. I've noticed that the gearbox is very slow, when selecting "D" wether I'm backing up and then selecting "D", or selecting "D" and go forward!
All the gears works fine other than described above, there's no any sounds or anything!
If I select the gear by stopping gearshift on "N" for a 2-3sec, then selecting "D", it works pretty much ok?
What could be the problem here? 🤔

Hi I have a 2013 a5 2.0 tdi auto
I have noticed that sometimes I can go to set off in 1st gear and the revs build up and it just crawls along then jumps into gear. The rest of the gears seem fine. Almost like the clutch is slipping?
It also doesn't seem as responsive as my Mrs q3 with same engine. Both 170bhp

Have you managed to resolve the issue? My 2013 A6 2.0 TDI also does this when cold but other than this the gearbox works perfect
Hello, would total power loss on any upshifting gear for a second or two under WOT be a symptom of a mechatronic issue? I've replaced circuits, and solenoids from the updated transmission and it fixed many issues but that power cut remains. I'm really trying to fix this.

@@tylerpadlina943 sadly, i was never able to figure it out. we even took apart the transmission entirely to replace the internal speed sensor for the gears, still no solution. It never gave any fault codes.
i have no idea what to do. mine has very little torque down low and will upshift at a very low rpm even going up a hill. after shifts it will bog and then the boost will come in like a surge. wondering if i should just put a used trans in it? i replaced the circuit boards and clutch solenoids which made it better for a week but now its back to where it was or even worse now.@@stevecardenas8035

I just recently got a 2010 audi S4 and when I floor it from a stop it will shift from like 1-2 or 2-3 and have a long delay. Does anyone know what this issue could be?

Hi , on audi tt mk2 2007 with s tronic gearbox,the car's crawling through traffic around idle RPM and just above, and in auto-selected 2nd gear. It results in a refined ride at this speed being extremely jerky and well, downright embaressing. Is this quite normal?

Hi. Is that the only fault code being produced when scanned? Usually when the mechatronic unit fails it usually brings up more than one fault code, so it's more likely be something external causing that fault. Hello mate my wife has a a1 2014 never had a issue she jumped started my mates van witch is a good van so probably has 2 battery’s on it…not knowing she should not off but now it want go into any gear and has the yellow warning on the box, we was told it can be caused from the jump start maybe cooked the mechatronic unit is this true thanks as it’s going to be a massive bill…

Hi. We can test your unit, however when the mechatronic unit fails it usually brings up more than one fault code, so it's more likely be something external causing that fault. Cheers.

I've got an Audi A4 b9 from 2016 with a 7 speed s-tronic dsg gearbox and I got the message : Selector lever fault but everything works fine,no symptoms at all.Can that be only a sensor error?

@AlexandruTDK Seems like I found out the problem.I tested at Audi they did a software update and told me if the message comes back then they need to change the gear knob.

Hello. I would like to ask you a question about my error code that has aperead several days ago. It says code number P179D00 and by description says "cooling oil valve electrical error"?
I was wondering does that mean I have to repair my mechatronic or is it possible to repair just that one fuse on cooling oil valve?

The gears pf My 2020 Audi A6 2.0 TDI wouldn't move beyond 2nd gear. This happened about 3 days after it was serviced for 16 000km at Audi Arcadia in Pretoria. It's now been with Audi for 10 days with NO resolution as they say the do not have the spanner to open up the faulty part. All those days the don't even offer a replacement vehicle for such an expensive car. Totally disappointing! Masiza

My s6 has a problem, getting code P189200. basically, i have to start in N, if i go from N to P then the its stuck in P but looking at the letter its in R, But car wont move so i guess its in P also, to change from P i have to switch off ignition, and start ignition again, then i can put it in N and start engine, then down to D to drive, sometimes i cant get it to D, i have to stop start stop start stop start and then it gets to D, weird thing is this is not always, its random, and when it doesnt work it doesnt work for atleast an hour. however the stuck in P part is always happening, Any help would be appreciatet, one person said it probably can be something that is in the gear box that changes the gear selector thing, because it drives smoothly on all gears otherwise. opening up the gearbox would probably be very very expensive
Take your car in and demand they show you GFF (Guided Fault Finding) in their ODISS software. If they don't have ODISS, run!

Then is it normal that after the correction. There is still Clutch burning smell and according to them it will fade later as you drive.
Any one who is shying away from the TT-RS this is all the reason to pull the trigger for one with the manual gear box here in the US. The multi clutch alone is a $6K job. Timing belt $4K. This Mechatronic unit sounds like a $3K-$5K job.

Hello, i have an A5 3.0 TDI 2011 and every time i stop at the light, the RPM goes from 600 to 800, to 400 and sometimes the engine just turning off. It does this every time, i ve been to so many mechanics but they can't see the issue. But trust me, i cannot drive it like that, it make me sell it. Can you tell me what this can be? Thanks
Im getting a bouncing throttle and the car jerks when stationary as well. It doesn't stall but wants to and then the revs go up to about 1000 after dipping to 500 etc. This is a 2010 S5. So annoying!

I'm having a issue with it starting from a slight hill it will take of on bidding point but when you stop and put your foot on peddle it will go nowhere then it will kick and take of doesn't happen every time but I've just realised that you take foot of and on again it's ok...any help would be great thanks

That sounds like normal multitronic behaviour, how long have you had it? It can be slow to react on a hill and a bit juddery/clunky but you get used to it and how to drive it. Had mine for 6 years/75k miles and at first I thought there was something wrong with it.

I took my 2011 Audi S4 to an Audi dealership because of a clunking noise at low speeds and reverse. The car shifts fine from what I’ve noticed. I took it to Audi and they said my car was completely fine and the noise I was hearing was due to the age of the vehicle. That noise got progressively worse. What could possibly be the issue?
Depends where noise is coming from, possible suspension issue?

Does your vehicle not go into reverse until you stop and restart?
Do you get a blinking gear indicator on your cluster?
If you are getting an unexpected gear disengagement code with a car over 32,000 km then your dual clutch is toast.
$6K to $7K bill incoming.
That said there is something you can try first. That being the DSG service. The car will do this if the clutch overheats. Changing the gear oil and the filter could help.
Does anybody experienced this audi a6 2013 S tronic. When I take off it jerks after it doesn't do it until I take off again. Then it's fine fluid has been changed and it has been recalibrated??
@@davidfallon4899 If it’s at low speeds 1-to 2nd shift feels jerky and when you are stoping and down shifting does the car lurch forward and feels hard to stop a bit
It’s the transmission bushing gotta get a solid one, it’s like 50 bucks and its two bolts easy 5 minute job fixes all that believe it or not

Hi. If you have no codes present in the TCM, then it is unlikely the fault is being caused by a faulty S Tronic.
Mine went faulty on my S4. It cost me 5K to fix. It only had 70,000 ish miles on the clock

Hello, I’ve had fault codes 18004 - Gear Selector 4, P187D AND 18044 - shift Fork 4 position sensor, P2848. Any ideas please. Car is a 2014 B8.5 S4 Audi.
Hi. With those fault codes being produced, it is unlikely that the fault will be with the S-Tronic control unit itself, and rather with something within the gear box. Cheers

Problem not solved at present. Audi specialist only offer was to replace the whole gearbox at £13.000. Four Gearbox specialist have indicate different solutions to the problem, from wiring loom, to mechatronics. None of the garages have indicated there solutions will definitely work but say it’s a process of elimination. I have the care scheduled for repair on the 29th June.

Can anybody answer me some stronic concerned questions please?
1) Can I change D to S and back to D during driving without any other steps?
2) What if I'm in situation, where I'm accelerating a little and "need" a downshift? Can I use paddle to shift down while pushing the gas pedal without causing any harm to the transmission?
3) In manual mode I'm pulling up the car on a light stop. Can I stop the car on 2nd gear and then downshift to 1st gear when the car is stationary? Or should I shift to 1st gear sooner due to RPM?
4) Is it normal to hear the shift from 2nd to 3rd gear with no load? Can't hear any other gear change other than 2 to 3 and even that is with almost no load. Under the load everything is silent and all I can hear is the exhaust. Only 70k km on the gearbox so far. If the described situation isn't completely normal, what is to blame? Mechatronic part?
5) Should the transmission be completely smooth in a car from 2010? Sometimes when the car goes without pushing the gas pedal I can notice a little lagging on the 2nd gear. I can imagine this is a nature of the older automatics transmissions, just wanna know :-)

1.) Drive and Sport modes can be seamlessly swapped between during driving.
2.) You can downshift using a paddle which will bring you into 'manual' mode and then accelerate as normal. The S-Tronic will then revert back to D mode after a few seconds.
3.) You don't need to downshift into 1st in manual mode, the S-Tronic will do it automatically. Downshift as normal to 2nd then when coming to a stop, it'll automatically go into 1st.
4.) Will need more details on the sound. When you say 'hear' the shift, what do you mean? I sometimes hear a noise from 1st into 2nd on my S-Tronic which has been there for a long time and caused no problems.
5.) Cars up to 2014 (when Audi introduced the newest generation of Mechatronic design) can all be susceptible to problems. Audi also left this gearbox behind and opted for ZF's 8 Speed transmission as it is much more reliable. The smoothness of your transmission depends on your mechatronics being healthy and your clutch packs not being overly worn. A failing mechatronic unit tends to damage clutches as-well so it's a 2 for 1 scenario. (You change out the mechatronic, you generally do clutches as-well).

in reality , the DSG will never be Super smooth , like a regular Auto transmission . it is essentially a clutch engagement you feel .

1. Yes.
2 and 3 are similar. You need to out-think it in a way, understanding it is always in 2 gears at once, trying to predict your next move.
2. If you want to down shift, let your foot off the gas for a second, it will anticipate a downshift so when you do it it will be instant. If you try to downshift while accelerating you confuse it because it is ready for the next highest gear not the lowest.
3. It took me a while to learn this one. You have 2 options when in M and coming to an stop. Just leave it in 3 and come to a stop slowly. It will understand you want 2 then 1 and do it smoothly. Or, if you have shifted to 2nd, come slowly to a stop, easing up ever so slightly on the brake as you stop - this gives to time to move from 3-1 on the 1-3-5 clutch/shaft. If you downshift to 2 and stop right away, it has trouble because it was ready for 3rd.
The adjustments are small but important. It was hard for me because I drive manual cars mostly, so some habits had to be altered. Hope that helps.

After 30 years of BMW 5 series (540i etc) I have gone to Audi. I purchased a used but still fairly young S6 Avant. I have never in my life owned such a piece of trash. This happens to mine all the time ONLY when I reverse up a slight incline or up a soft curb to park. It jerks then revs with no movement and then SUDDENLY LURCHES forward along with the cog wheel sign. It happens every time in that scenario. I utterly detest this vehicle and feel it should have NEVER passed any approval for it to be sold. This is a pathetic gearbox. It's simply ridiculous to put something so dangerous into the hands of normal users, or better said be sold at all!!!! I could run/knock someone over in front of me BEING IN REVERSE GEAR!! It's outrageous. These are dangerous toys, not cars. I have to think back to the 80s when in the USA Audis were constantly being smashed into walls. I thought the yanks were mad. Couldn't drive. I have TOTALLY changed my mind! It's Audi!!! Audi engineering.

If so, you have a serious problem with your gearbox. I have reversed up a steep bank with a 2 ton caravan without that problem. Just a hint of burning clutch 😂
