- We return to the second half of AI: The Somnium Files, the next Uchikoshi game to be thrown up for the weeb's gambit. The game so far has been nothing but bangers, will it destroy expectations by also having a great ending or will it fall like the rest. I watched the streams of this live, and I thought they were pretty good. Then later I watched these highlights and thought they were the same. Then I went back to the VOD's and I nearly gagged.

On the contrary, while I do feel like AINI was written largely with the twist in mind, I feel like it's ending had a lot more to say than AI1. Especially since you get Ryuki Alter as the true end to the game... He may actually end up liking it.

@@shadowmaster2200 it goes both ways. I think AINI tried to say something more profound but had a lot more details that don't fit well. The first game is really tightly written imo (obviously there's a lot of dumb fun, but the actual mysteries' details are well thought out and logically consistent to me). In contrast, AINI has a lot of things that just sort of aren't executed well enough to sell the twist or the mystery. In particular, I think it's too intent on fooling you.

Man, one of the funniest things that you only see in _some_ playthroughs in this game (since you can do most of the endings in each order), is the player being successfully gaslit by Iris and Ota's talk about paralell worlds, urban legends, and all that stuff, and start thinking that's _actually_ the direction the game is going to go with its story. Little do they know that this entire segment is a COMPLETE red herring, that is _meant_ to confuse you, and it ultimately amounts to basically nothing by the end of the game. And it seems this is exactly what happened to Joe here.

Kinda bullshit considering that the last game series *entire plot* is about that and it uses the flowchart mechanic and locking system again.
Like if it was out of nowhere sure, but "Haha I lied you thought it was like the last thing I did!" isn't much of a gotcha.

In this first game the idea of the whole "parallel universes" is meant to throw you off ESPECIALLY if you know the writer, you would think its just like their previous works and that is the actual final mystery, then it subverts expectations flawlessly. It is technically true since Date gets memories from alternate timelines, but its never a big or significant plotpoint, and in fact it could be removed entirely.
But then the sequel had to ruin that and be like "nah, actually, that was real anyways and this game is all about" basically repeating more than half of Uchikoshi's previous work's twists while making pointless the one.
@@fortris it works precisely BECAUSE Zero Escape is exactly the kind of franchise that would lean into this stuff hard. AI decides to subvert these expectations entirely by keeping the story much more grounded (or at least as grounded as it can be)
the mere fact that none of this stuff is even remotely suggested or hinted at at all in the left path and that you only ever hear about it from Iris and her number one fan should tip you off that maybe something is off
say what you want about this game, but you can't deny the commitment to the insanity, i'm scared of nirvana iniative

Bro... I think I'm with you. The only reasons I enjoyed watching Joe play 999, VLR and ZTD was cause of the insanity of them and how funny and bad they were, but this one ran with it and imo actually pulled I off. I don't really get how Joe didn't like the ending here, I've ran through it in my mind multiple times and with the previous context of the game it makes sense imo. Date swapping w the yakuza leader to try call off the hit makes sense to me, and with how completely retarded the background characters are in this game and the fact they literally swapped bodies it makes sense that the cop on watch would just let him out after swapping. Idk Saito would want the yakuza leaders body, probably isn't shown in this vid, but none of this ruins the game for me as it was pre obvious date was in Saitos body the whole game. Seeing Ai-Ba self destruct actually made me tear up, and was a good end. Then the dance at the end... shit bro this weeb game got me

While he may not have loved the ending, I was really happy that he enjoyed this game!! I was kinda worried even though I knew in my heart the streams would be good. Aitsf is probably my favourite game (though I won’t admit that in refined company) despite its flaws. Thanks for the highlights once again you do such good work on these, Walrus!!
In reference to when Joe starts getting really frustrated with the game's ending, Ill offer my take - So whenever a game or story like this is clearly and obviously going for a big payoff and it hand waves plot details or uses contrivances, illogical decisions, stupidity in the characters, in my mind its like trying to remove the stickers on a rubix cube in order to solve it. The cube might look solved but in essence they 'cheated' to get it that way, like the illogical decisions made to get Date in place leading up to his memory loss 6 years ago - I think that's what got Joe so annoyed. Plots arent easy to construct and sometimes solving the 'puzzle' to get it to its desired solution can be really difficult. I think Saito using 'truth serum' to learn about somnium mind swap from Falco was when I knew the ending was irreversibly broken.
I just watched this for 4 hours straight, great video Walrus, you're doing gods work, I seriously wish you the best in life.
I love even Joe being thrown off guard by seeing the buzz saw kill Iris.
I had already watched the streams once and it still threw me off seeing it again onrewatch.

I hand't noticed earlier, but when Aiba and Date exchange the "I'm home", "Welcome back" at 3:46:25, that's a reference to when Mizuki talks about how you define family (previous video at 2:08:00). She says it's an ordinary relationship in the most ordinary of ways; saying "I'm home" and hearing "welcome back" without having to think about it
this game feels like it was written in chronological order
I’m so used to him disliking the things I like I forgot I completely agree with him with this game. (Also he isn’t wrong when he does and actually engages with the games and what they give you better than even I remember doing)

really hope it's a zero time dilemma deal where it's so bad it's good, didn't like the twist or the end imo but it has a pretty strong starting mystery and characters (except the villain, oooh boy the villain)

Or even worse going back to the sequel to add a completely unnesesary explanation to her super strenght.
I think there are a lot of small flaws this game has that had super easy, obvious fixes.
Like Hitomi is dancing moving her arm because they clearly had no money to make a separate animation: easy, dont ever focus on her so at least its not obvious (they end up focusing on her like five times).

god I’ve been thinking about this a lot, I’ve been playing umineko recently and joe’s whole “I KNEW that [extremely detailed and convoluted series of events] would happen” bit is exactly what the game feels like at times😭 pulling out the most insane reasoning and saying “well it could have happened. can you prove it didn’t??”

I think that may just be a stock sound DS games used, I could swear those sounds are also used in Kawashima's Brain Training.

i still don't understand how mindswapping with rohan to call off the hit is dumb. I get why Joe thinks them not watching the room is dumb, but the mindswap seems perfectly logical to me. Does he think that Falco wouldn't be able to convincingly impersonate rohan? That doesn't follow because the kumakura gang didn't know about the somnium machine so they'd have no reason to suspect or even think that someone else is occupying rohans body
Probably the whole "yeah I'll give up my body for this" part, I feel like it would be better if the plan was "swap to Rohan for a couple months, keep Falco-Rohan in custody for that time, then swap back"
@@Ashe1001 It's that and also I think there's a tightrope comedy-drama titles have to walk where characters can be comedically incompetent when it doesn't matter but when it's an important plot point carrying over that same joke logic just diminishes the integrity of the story, and "suggesting a radical procedure, Boss seemingly having no ethical quandaries with it (especially seeing as Falco>Rohan would presumably have to engage in criminal activities to keep his cover up), informing no one in case something went awry, and then nobody watching the machine to keep the swapped body from escaping" definitely falls into the latter camp.
Also just to add an additional criticism, for the most part the story treats body swapping and Somnium in general as something that can only be done once but as far as we can tell you can just do it however many times you want and there's some stupidity surrounding that (eg. "why don't you just go in for 6 minutes and then once you're out of time go back in for another 6 minutes?"). If there was some story reason why it would be more excusable, but what it feels like to me is that the original plot *did* have it as a one-time deal per person, but it proved too restrictive so it got changed and the plot holes caused by it remained. Just a theory though.
He could have explained his perspective instead of being condescendant indeed. I'll speculate though: I think he's comparing this situation with any other cop-story scenario similar to that. What do cops usually do when they hear that a bunch of mafiosi are aiming for a specific person? They put the target in secure places then ambush the mafiosi.
To me, it feels like *they had no reason not to do this here as well.* Why did Boss want a secret plan when they have the entire government on their side?
It's also a very inconvenient plan: they have to catch Rohan first (which could have failed for so many reasons), the technology and its consequences are still pretty unknown at this point so the body swap could have turned very wrong, and having to """dispose""" of the other person is a very scummy thing to consider, especially for cops.
Also, imagine he kills his old body, but cops launch an investigation and get back to his new body, then send him to jail.
So many things could have gone wrong with the plan.
On the contrary, the subtle escape feels less stupid to me. Sure it wasn't shown very well, but the killer using his new identity is pretty well thought out. The only missing piece to me was showing the vilain's perpsective for one second, showing he notices he isn't under tight surveillance.
@@ozzi9816I gotta disagree with a number of things here. For one, Boss not having ethical quandaries... Didn't really surprise me? For a number of reasons, honestly. For one, she's been SHOWN to be kinda blasé about a lot of this stuff during the game; she literally hits a guy in the hospital with sleeping gas that she's just CARRYING AROUND. Y'know. In case she needs to gas a hospital patient. And then bring him into custody to get Psynced into. It's pretty well setup that perhaps her morals are a bit looser than others. Beyond that, it's pretty clear she had a thing for Date, and was willing to go to huge lengths to support him.
As for the latter, it literally gets brought up on Ota's route? You can't use the Psync Machine in rapid succession, they need to recalibrate it afterwards (which can take more or less time depending on plot convenience, but still). This stuff all gets set up reasonably well. Or, if you want the Doyalist explanation, because it would be really lame if they used the machine over and over again on one person twenty times in a row and make for a boring story, so they didn't do that. It works once and then you can't do it again right away because the story flows better like that.
Why not just put Hitomi under police protection? Or like, actually arrest the mobsters planning to murder civilians?

Still my favorite game overall of anything that Utsu-whatever made. Super likeable characters for the most part, I even liked Iris and im kinda glad he ended up becoming her uncle at the end. Good comedy

Hot take, I think doing a story with disconnected information locked behind failstates and timeline branching, it like.. puts too much on the player to get them in the intended order? Like breath of the wild and its rerelease goty edition with sky islands kinda did that too, at least with a more linear plot you can dole out the information really carefully. Maybe thats why this guy's games tend to snap under the weight of their own ending, so many things suddenly NEED to make sense all at once
