My school- If you wear anything other than a grey hoodie and sweatpants or jeans you will be called emo. Idk why the ppl there do it but they just do 🤷🏽♀️
These are all alternative styles. Emo is often confused with alt. Emo is alt but not all alt fashion is Emo. It is important to note that emo fashion takes from a lot of other fashions. Punk and metal have skulls and spikes. Scene has the one eye covered hair and dark humor. Grunge has that darkness. Gothic has its black. When emo fashion took from so many different things, it's hard to classify what genre of fashion a spiked leather bracelet goes to.
@m0thK1tteN Yes, any style that isn't mainstream is considered Alt style. Alt just means alternative so even Lolita, Kawii, Harajuku, and Cottage core outfits are even considered alt fashion because its just not the "normal" thing to wear. Alt doesn't mean dark, edgy, or scary it really just means different

If you want to call your self any of these, keep this in mind: *Punk* is based mainly on your mindset. Punks typically reject capitalism and materialism and lean more towards anarchy. Punks also tend to thrift and make their own clothes. Music and fashion is a pretty large part of the punk genre but you can’t call yourself punk and get all your clothes from fast fashion shops like hot topic (obviously we aren’t all rich and can’t buy high quality stuff but that’s where diy comes in). Punk is a political mindset as well as being music based. *Goth* is a music based genre. If you don’t like the music, you’re something else. This isn’t gatekeeping, it’s actually very accepting because you can dress in any way and still be goth if you listen to the music. It can also include the fashion we all know (which has a lot of different types like mall goth or Victorian goth or trad goth, all incorporate a LOT of black), and usually goths embrace and find joy in darkness (think Addams family). Goth is about the music. (It also comes from punk and was originally known as post punk, so it involves a similar political mindset and can include a lot of thrifting and diy; thanks @Mevsie!) *Grunge* is, once again, music based. Listen to the music? You’re grunge! It also follows a lot of ideas from punk, like reusing clothes and diy and such. In the 90s, it was a response to the materialism of the past decades, led by grunge bands that basically just wore whatever the wanted (think Kurt Cobain). So grunge is about the music (and a little bit of the mindset). *y2k*, I know less about. It basically emanates the styles from the late 90s/early 2000s, but in a more stylish way than certain actual y2k outfits… There is some y2k music and plenty of celebrities that are considered y2k. Also, it can be used to describe two different styles, one more futuristic (since everyone thought computers were going to shut down), and one more like what was shown in the video. Everything I said about y2k may be complete crap. Siri was not very helpful with this one. *Emo* is a music genre that comes from hardcore-punk, and can be considered post-hardcore. It’s mostly music based, but the lines can be blurry, especially with scene around. Don’t know much about this one either but I’d say music based. *Metalhead* is more descriptive of someone that likes metal music, and this is music based. This is probably the most obvious, because you can’t consider yourself metal without listening to metal. There is some associated fashion, but how you dress isn’t super defining, maybe even less so than the other music based genres. It can include wearing the band tshirts, combat boots, leather jacket, etc. Metalhead is about music. *Scene* is more about fashion and music. It’s similar to emo styles but usually a bit more colorful, so people tend to confuse them. Scene is somewhat of a music genre and therefore music based *Hippy* is about a counter culture mindset from the 1960s. It tends to be associated with a lot of drugs and very accepting people. It includes a lot of activism and working for peace. Like punk, people tend to think more of the style, which completely flushes out the original values behind it. There is some associated music and fashion. The “hippy” fashion now tries to copy how hippies dressed and some still do, because they were too busy actually being activists to care about how they dressed. It can include a lot of long, flowing clothing with unique jewelry. Do not try to be hippy by dressing a certain way or doing drugs or something. Hippy is about your mindset and actions. All in all, most of these styles are considered alternative, which is anything outside of the mainstream. This can be harder to identify with certain styles becoming popular, but basically, do your research before considering yourself a certain one of these styles “aesthetics”. Ik this is long but it’s important, also, this is not gatekeeping, bc it’s not hard to do any of this. If anyone wants goth or grunge music recommendations, just ask! Note: don’t worry if you aren’t fully able to express yourself in the way that I described above or are still learning about these! Most people will understand and everyone has to start somewhere!

honestly this video is great as a basic clothing guide for people who wanna lean into a specific alt subculture but also guys dont forget not to worry too much about labels and stuff and just wear what u like :]
That's all well and good but not exactly practical in application. Regardless of how it started, colloquially folks will know what you mean when you say "emo" instead of " emo inspired fashion".
This!! Yes yes yes, this all day and goth! People are so interested in the aesthetic that they forget what MAKES emo, emo, or what makes goth, goth. This and its ideals and values are so overturned today.
I was gonna be like, "Yeah, that's accurate", however, in traditional emo style, there is one difference, the pants, usually its tight skinny jeans and not baggy pants
AmberKatelynBeale is a good channel to get a look at what they actually wore back in the 2000s, she was scene in her old videos and she has outfits and tutorials
sorry i won't like cuz ima little kid inside my head but i would if it wasn't for the funny number :D (you probably don't care but i wanted to say it :P )
My mom and dad would be so pissed whenever a random 9-11 year old randomly says something that’s emo even though it’s no where CLOSE to being emo😭 (my dad was goth in high school and my mom was scene and they both had emo friends so they know the difference of what’s emo and what’s not emo)
This is differentiating the different alt subcultures dawg. If it were gatekeeping they'd be saying you CANT wear them or have some of the items listed. It's like saying "oh you can't own a cat those are for classy people" when anyone can own a cat.
Alternative(aka alt), is an umbrella term, with styles like, grunge, y2k, hippie, scene, ect… but, did you know that styles like gyaru, cutecore, and decora are also alt? That’s right! Alt means that you don’t dress usually, and that you are different from the norms. It doesn’t just mean styles like emo, punk, goth..ect. Have a nice day and stay alt 🤘
@sunnytsuu yea it was some rando 10 yr old boys, and, I had drawn smth in the sand (I was on a bridge, there was sand below it) and rhey accused me of drawing a pentagram and being a devil worshipper (it was nowhere close to a pentagram( and basically just harassed me for the next hour, almost threw a rock at my head too. If it would've hit it would've been right between my eyes and donea bit of damage.
The last slide isn’t emo either, the clothes look more mall goth imo and the hair is scene, the only emo thing about this is the accessories (with exception of the diamond belt)
This because this video is very bad at explaining emo and just dialing it down to an aesthetic when it is a subculture but also emo is based on music so it doesn't matter what the person wears
@@TheDude-mb8ht no, emo is a specific style and music genre, you can't just out on a black hoodie and call yourself emo, just like you can't put on a black hat and call yourself goth, it depends on style and music
Making a separate comment for this. Btw yall, the Alt community is music and partially mindset based. You don’t have to dress this way to be a metalhead/Punk/Goth/etc., but you have to listen to the music. If you only dress this way, you’re not a metalhead/Punk/Goth/etc. personally I’m a metalhead and I do dress this way tho. This is not gatekeeping either, gatekeeping would be telling someone they can’t listen to the music or dress that way bc of their race/religion/gender/etc. I’m tired of people saying this is gatekeeping. People saying that are most often the very people that think of Alt people as violent, murderous, drug addicted alcoholics, and the same people who kept saying our music and culture was “disgusting” and “harmful”.
Yes, I agree ☝🏼 I think they’re not “uninformed” just frankly use the words as negative stereotypes (discriminatory sometimes) for anyone, emo is used to describe a depressive loner, punk as for an aggressive rule breaker (I’m a punk so I know this one’s common), gothic I feel like is used for dark and death I guess.
Everyone who says that that is not y2k are wrong. Y2k is alot diff styles cuz it stands for year 2000 and in 00's people wore diff kind of outfit soo. Edit: yk I meant that you can't say that y2k was just this or just that. Not everyone wore low rise jeans, tank tops, glitter, big belts etc.
It’s partly acubi tho and if you were to look up 2000s outfits most of them would be LOTS!! Of layers clothing you can also ask parents/people in their 20s or near twenties about what y2k clothing looks like since they experienced and lived through that year :3
it is wrong. in the 2000’s, it was mainly; - studded belts - low waisted jeans, - skinny scarves - tank tops - boots - tube tops THIS was y2k. acubi is the style you were talking about.
@@whatdoinamemyself289yes it is y2k was term that people in 1999 made up going in to 2000s, y2k is early 2000s fashion which varied from lots of styles

They probably know this already, but based on the excitement that I can take from the tone of this comment(all caps, messing up in grammar or spelling[typing fast], ect), as someone who wants to dress Alt(I would literally wear every article of clothing in this video, Istg), but can't because I don't have the clothes to and my parents won't buy me any and I can't get any for myself at the moment, I think they just meant they're finally able to dress how they want and likely already are in the music subculture or whatever else is needed to be considered Goth😅..And if not? Then they're not Goth, but rather Gothic. I believe that's what it's called when people just dress like it, anyways:] @@shadowstar1616
thank you. but also i don’t know why being emo is considered an insult, the style is honestly really cool, seeing as everyone likes stupid and BASIC styles. everyone’s favorite style is just wearing jeans and lululemon or whatever, these styles ACTUALLY have personality. the people who like those boring styles are mainly influences tryna put that style on everyone else. that’s why wearing “boring” clothes is cute and all the rage now. thanks social media!! (sry for the long comment lol)
Whoa, it's not a crime to like/wear basic clothes Heck, a basic outfit can look awesome with the right accessories added, and ofc the person's confidence in wearing it How about we just... Not use emo OR basic as an insult? Conformist is a good alternative to use instead
Except that scene was mostly based on fashion, not music. Emo is a music based subculture that had a fashion trend kinda based on it, just like goth, grunge, and punk. You can still be emo without really dressing that way, it’s about the music. You can be scene without being super into emo music (although a lot of people tend to be anyways).
@@panickedshearskinda old comment but goth outdates being emo, from what i've seen gothic culture has been around way back in the old times, mainly gaining popularity as a genre in the 80-90s!, emo became a thing way later on, I actually think one of the oldest subgenres is newwave which mainly inspired traditional gothic attire but not the genre as a whole
@@Draculeut gothic culture dates back extremely far, specifically gothic literature like that of Edgar Allen Poe. I’m not sure about the attire, but I do remember gothic literature because we had to cover it in school :)
@@AverageBerserkFan456 most of these aren’t so much styles as the music you listen to, you can wear grunge-esque or Y2K clothing but listen to Emo music and you’re Emo It’s like saying you have to have barcode wrists to be Emo and you have to worship Satan to be a metal head
While I do agree that the language used is a bit gatekeepey it’s important to distinguish styles from others imo, learning the history of alt fashion and it’s sub genres can be a bit confusing especially for newer alt people, I think saying something like “oh this is a punk style but you don’t have to be punk to wear it” is better since you can learn about the history of styles in all of our alt spaces.
@@ViraPlays emo is definitely a large part style, clothing style has always been a big part of it since it started. And explaining the difference between clothing aesthetics isn't gatekeeping at all, not even close.

That's all well and good but not exactly practical in application. Regardless of how it started, colloquially folks will know what you mean when you say "emo" instead of " emo inspired fashion".
I love this, keeping on spreading the word!
This!! Yes yes yes, this all day and goth! People are so interested in the aesthetic that they forget what MAKES emo, emo, or what makes goth, goth. This and its ideals and values are so overturned today.

Was about to say those haircuts with those bright colors are scene. If they were black they could be emo.
This because this video is very bad at explaining emo and just dialing it down to an aesthetic when it is a subculture but also emo is based on music so it doesn't matter what the person wears
also emo is a type of MUSIC, the fashion is inspired by emo music
I was going to say the same lol because 2010s emo was skinny jeans and fitted band tees
They showed like modern tik tok baggy mall goth clothes
They shouldve just said fck it and put a picture if gerard way

I love these people who make it clear to you with images, thank you! (I'm scene)

The amount of ppl in my school who actually need this tho-
people do know, they just dont gaf. they mostly just call it emo cuz it pisses people off
Yes, I agree ☝🏼 I think they’re not “uninformed” just frankly use the words as negative stereotypes (discriminatory sometimes) for anyone, emo is used to describe a depressive loner, punk as for an aggressive rule breaker (I’m a punk so I know this one’s common), gothic I feel like is used for dark and death I guess.
my brother said i looked emo bc i woke up in a side part even though i was wearing bright colored pjs.
Of layers clothing you can also ask parents/people in their 20s or near twenties about what y2k clothing looks like since they experienced and lived through that year :3
it is wrong. in the 2000’s, it was mainly;
- studded belts
- low waisted jeans,
- skinny scarves
- tank tops
- boots
- tube tops

They probably know this already, but based on the excitement that I can take from the tone of this comment(all caps, messing up in grammar or spelling[typing fast], ect), as someone who wants to dress Alt(I would literally wear every article of clothing in this video, Istg), but can't because I don't have the clothes to and my parents won't buy me any and I can't get any for myself at the moment, I think they just meant they're finally able to dress how they want and likely already are in the music subculture or whatever else is needed to be considered Goth😅..And if not? thank you. but also i don’t know why being emo is considered an insult, the style is honestly really cool, seeing as everyone likes stupid and BASIC styles. everyone’s favorite style is just wearing jeans and lululemon or whatever, these styles ACTUALLY have personality. the people who like those boring styles are mainly influences tryna put that style on everyone else. that’s why wearing “boring” clothes is cute and all the rage now. thanks social media!! Ok but scene was like a subgenre of emo
Except that scene was mostly based on fashion, not music. Emo is a music based subculture that had a fashion trend kinda based on it, just like goth, grunge, and punk. You can still be emo without really dressing that way, it’s about the music. You can be scene without being super into emo music (although a lot of people tend to be anyways).

it's not gatekeeping, it's just defining styles
@@AverageBerserkFan456 most of these aren’t so much styles as the music you listen to, you can wear grunge-esque or Y2K clothing but listen to Emo music and you’re Emo
It’s like saying you have to have barcode wrists to be Emo and you have to worship Satan to be a metal head
