Mr. Gordon Lightfoot has passed away today (1 May, 2023) at the age of 84 yrs. old, thanks for all the great music and memories, and may you RIP Mr. Lightfoot!
Thanks Harri for reacting to Gordon Lightfoot again. I like what Bob Dylan once said about him. “Every time I hear Gordon Lightfoot sing, I wish the song would never end”. Bob Dylan did the induction speech when Gordon was inducted in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. 😊🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hey Carol, if you watch the Dylan movie/doc, "Rolling Thunder Review", while on the Canadian leg of the tour Dylan's gang of musicians stop in Lightfoot's house and do some jamming. It's there that Joni Mitchell first plays "Coyote" which she wrote on the tour about Sam Shepherd who was hitting on her. Lightfoot playing host just taking it all in.
Harri this song is written about his then girlfriend Cathy Smith, one of his back up singers, who was largely responsible for the breakup of his first marriage. She was a real party girl and would often take off for the city to “party” leaving him working on his songwriting at home. She was very untrustworthy. She is the one responsible for the death of actor/comedian John Belushi when she overdosed him with a heroin/cocaine injection. She was sent to prison . Served her time, and I believe passed away a while ago.
Gordon went to see her shortly before she died. I'm not sure but I believe it was cancer that got her. By all accounts they had a very happy and lengthy visit. Of course Gordon had his flaws as does everyone, but I sure would love to find someone who had even half of his strength of character. That is just not something you see in people everyday. The woman basically slept with the entire band when they were together and yet he was there for her at the end. Remarkable.
My boy friend introduced me to Gordon Lightfoot back in 1970 or 1971 when I was in the Army. He also introduced me to Pink Floyd, became permanent fans of both of them. My boy friend and I went through some really strange times. I lost contact with him after he got out of the Army. Mike Elliott if you are still alive and see this, still think the world of you.
He's talking about drinking, "sometimes I think it's a shame when I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain". He's talking about only feelling better when he's drunk.
Talking in Your Sleep Rainy Day People Early Morning Rain Carefree Highway Canadian Railroad Trilogy Black Day in July All Gordon Lightfoot songs are always a great story. It's his great ability to grab you, no matter what the song, at the start and you need to know the rest of the story. Every song a treasure and so is Gordon. 🇨🇦 Loved your reaction Harri. Thanks for more Gordon. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Gordon died yesterday, May 1st 2023. I grew up - and grew old - with Gordon Lightfoot. I played music professionally - mostly a very uneventful career - and something that always amazed me about Gordon what his mastery of composing, arranging, playing and recording his music. He could sit down and write out, in musical notation, every piece or riff for every instrument in every song, perfectly. Some musicians can't read or write music - and that's their gig - but Gord was a superb musician from every standpoint. More importantly, he never wrote a song that I wouldn't play again. Some songs, like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, are so powerful that they bring tears to people's eyes even today. But I bet you could binge-listen, Hari, and never find a song you wouldn't listen to again. Some you might wish you could forget - Black Day in July, for example - but you'll never say that they're not great songs. Best, Hari. R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot, fellow Canadian and truly a Canadian icon as well as a gift to the world. A musician's musician but also one who is still attracting new listener whose parents hadn't even been born when Gord wrote the songs. Truly. If that's not staying power, I don't know what is.
Thank you for reacting to so many of Gordon Lightfoots songs. I live near his home town and will be attending his public visitation tomorrow. I’ve enjoyed binge watching your videos. The church bell will ring 84 times in his honour. Thank you for keeping his and others music alive.
Hi Harri. I think I can clear up something you asked about. When Gordon says "sometimes I get felling better when I'm feeling no pain"", means he feels better about the situation when he's drunk. "Feeling no pain" is a Canadianism for being so drunk you no longer feel physical or emotional pain. I haven't heard it used outside of my country.
Thanks for your reaction! I always really enjoyed this song too for the groove but had no idea that he wrote it about Catherine Smith, a bad woman that he was involved with while he was married. His affair with Catherine Smith resulted in one of the most expensive divorce settlements in Canadian history at the time. Running around ( "creeping") was how Catherine Smith lived her life and she caused a lot of problems (a path a destruction) for quite a few well known musicians. She was involved with Levon Helm and all of the members of 'The Band' in the late sixties and was an influence in their song, "The Weight". She later moved on to Gordon Lightfoot in the 70's but was involved with many other musicians. Most shocking of all about Catherine's path of destruction is she later became involved with John Belushi in the 80's and ended up serving time in prison (not enough time!) for injecting the mix of heroin/cocaine into John Belushi that killed him. Catherine's story on Wikipedia is detailed and quite shocking.
@@BobSoltis1 No need to troll or be rude as this is not a statement to bash 'The Band'. You can read about this in Cathy Smith Wikipedia and "The Weight" Wikipedia but I have also seen that stated from other sources in the past. I had not even known that about this song or "The Weight" until after John Belushi's death and Catherine Smith was talked about more. There is also more said about her since her death in 2020 but I am glad that she was not given much celebrity recognition when she passed away.
When I was in the Navy my best mate and I really bonded over this song, "...looking like a queen in a sailor's dream". Gordon is a fantastic singer, songwriter, and storyteller.
I always thought the line about feelin' better when feelin' no pain was about drugs, or alcohol. I could be wrong. Love this song - gets stuck in the ear very easily. Gonna be humming this one all evening now.
Agreed. This song speaks to me as an Old Drunk who thinks he was erudite and intellectual only to have folks say “Last night you started with a ‘good point’ only to devolve into gibberish and drooling.” 🫤
I never really took this song as meaning that the woman was cheating on him. I just took it as a woman that is interested in him and he knows she's trouble, but she is beautiful and he is attracted to her. He seems annoyed at himself that he can't resist her 'charms' so to speak. When the sun goes down she shows up at his back door. I take it that he does let her in for the evening. He feels like he's winning when he's losing again. The night with her is great (winning), but he knows she's only going to cause him trouble (losing). That's my take on it anyway. lol. :)
I always took it as Gordon calling out the guy she's having an affair with lol, like, "sundown, you better take care, if I find you been creeping down my back stairs". Basically like, at least when she's doing the affair; don't bring him to his house, and if he does catch him around it'll be trouble 😊
This song is about the woman who broke up his marriage and why he wrote the song "If you could read my mind". It was about feeling disconnected from his wife and being in a 3 way script love triangle with the Sundown woman. Anyhow he was writing his next album and his girlfriend was all dressed up and going out. He did not want her to. He did not fully trust her as that girlfriend had been a groupie to a rock group called "The Band". She went anyhow and he drank himself drunk imagining her with other men and wrote the song Sundown that night.
The same girlfriend many years later became a drug addict and dealer and is the same woman who sold snd did drugs with comedian John Brlushi that killed him.
Hi Harri, Gordon said he was surprised to see this song move up the charts as it did since it was "just a song" about "a twinge of infidelity". Just a song, which happened to be his biggest hit in the U.S. I am happy to see that you have kept your tag line of "stay beautiful" since you reacted to my request of Gordon's song "Beautiful"! - Brooklyn Mike
Lightfoot's most sinister song - a confession of sexual jealousy over a smooth country-blues arrangement . A dark masterpiece that I suspect we'll be listening to til the lights go out.
It's about alcoholism. Sundown the woman is actually booze. Sailor's Dream=wine, women, and a Royal Flush. "Getting lost in her lovin' is your first mistake" means every drunkard started w/ their very first drink.
Lightfoot almost always wrote songs of the heart - love lost or being on the road- away from home or his loved one. There are a few exceptions - e.g. The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald; The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. There was however one song that is of deep social awareness. And it is anything but "folky". It was about the riots in Detroit in 1967. The song is one of desperation and anger. It is called "Black Day in July". It shows a very different side of Lightfoot. You might find it interesting.
One of the greatest singles to appear in the late Spring/early Summer of 1974. And let's own up to the incredibly tasteful guitar work of the late great Terry Clements. I wish Warner/Rhino could put together a Deluxe Edition of the Sundown album-at least a 2-CD set with alternate takes, demos and outtakes. I'd even love to hear live performances from when the album was released. Since the single it charted so well, "Carefree Highway" was the follow-up single later in the Summer. Not too shabby.
"I think it's a shame when I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain" Meaning: It's a shame the only time I feel ok is when I'm drunk. 'Feelin' no pain' is slang for being drunk.
If You Could Read My Mind is also a classic by Gordon. Other great tunes by him are Carefree Highway, The Circle Is Small, Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Early Morning Rain and For Lovin' Me.

I was a little kid when this song was on the radio, and I remember that I kind of liked it, but that it also creeped me out. Listening again, and reading the comments, I chuckle over my childhood misunderstandings. First, I didn't know he was saying "Sundown;" I always heard it as "Someday, you better take care," "Somedays, I think it's a sin," etc. Knowing nothing of infidelity, my young mind conjured up ghosts or witches creeping around his back stair, making him lose when he thought he was winning (that's some black magic!), somehow hurting him but not letting him know it at first because he's feeling no pain. Creepy stuff. Reading the comments and learning about Catherine Smith, I think he'd've been better off with the ghosts and witches.
Harry, my man, loving that, you would also love 'Softly' another great romatic song to close your eyes to and drift with it. This and 'Beautiful' are his finest romantic songs, IMO
This was written about actual events that took place in his life, between him and his wife who had recently separated. She would creep up onto the back porch and try and see what Gordon and his lady friend were doing. It got pretty scary, and she was basically stalking him. She was the mother of his children.
From what I understand, this song he started writing because he got an intrusive thought in his head about his wife cheating on him while she was out. The song itself is what he would do to the imaginary person if he ever got his hands on them. I can't remember off hand if his thoughts were justified or not though.
"Sometimes I think it's a shame when I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain", he's just so exhausted by worrying about the relationship that he thinks he'd be better off w/out her.
Another great pick, Harri! Gotta add while I'm thinking of it how much I enjoy your recently added custom of going out on a quick reprise of your favourite part of the song. Love it!! Cheers, all the best, mate!! ;>D
Gordon has always had my heart. Really one of the last great troubadours the world will ever see…the world has turned. People like Gordon, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Carol King, Joni Mitchell… all super talents, just to name a few. I miss the wonder and freshness of the past. Sorry Harri, guess I’m just getting old. Absolutely great reaction…as always! ❤️🔥🇨🇦
I just watched a documentary on Gordon Lightfoot recommended by Rick Beato of UA-cam. This song is about a back-up singer and musician "groupee" who almost ruined Gordon Lightfoot and gave John Belushi his lethal dose of "speed ball".
Well, greetings from Canada again, eh!! Gordon Lightfoot is a legendary Canadian troubadour and a National Treasure!! Some people write songs, Gordon Lightfoot creates music!!!
Kinda fun fact 🤷🏼♂️ Gordon most likely wrote this about the stormy relationship with his one time girlfriend Cathy Smith, who was later sentenced for delivering a lethal dose of heroin to John Belushi. Gordon was very jealous and drank heavily and was apparently an angry, abusive drunk 🙁
Late summer 1974. The solo singer/ songwriter trend of the 1970's was the greatest. Lightfoot was by trade a folk singer, who appealed to more than just the folk music audiences. the list is long of the names of male and female solo songwriter/ performances of the 1970's. And duos.

I had a whole history of Cathy Smith to lay down into words…but you already said it all.
Hadn't know that trivia-thanks
Damn-she sounds like a real harpy.

Most definitely. I love Carefree Highway.
One of my top teen as well.
Picture it, America, Summertime 1974 and playing on the radio "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot. Priceless 🤗 ⚾
I was obsessed with Gordon Lightfoot music in the 80s. Couldn’t get enough of it RIP Gord ♥️🎶
I know what you mean.
He's talking about drinking, "sometimes I think it's a shame when I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain". He's talking about only feelling better when he's drunk.

Very,very true.
I went to his concert a few years ago. It was a terrific show.
Gordon Lightfoot is the love of my life musically speaking and have attended many many of his concerts ❤️🎶🎵
Lightfoot's most sinister song - a confession of sexual jealousy over a smooth country-blues arrangement . A dark masterpiece that I suspect we'll be listening to til the lights go out.
Harri, please react to "Early Morning Rain" written by Gordon Lightfoot and performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary.
Thank you for all your reactions.
He is a true poet, with his words and MOSTLY it is his music- the Instruments that tell his poems!
The 12 string guitars! Be still my heart.❤
Beautifully performed and orchestrated - you want to hear it a second time.

In this Canadians opinion, one of the best songwriters this world has ever seen.✌❤🇨🇦

Dude, the beauty of music is that it's interpretation belongs to the listener. No truly wrong interpretations. That's what music is all about.
My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song!
Listen to The Ballad of the Edmond Fitzgerald from Lake Surperior . He wrote it for the shipwreck. Great one too!!!
One of the most beautiful yet spinetingling songs
He already did The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
If You Could Read My Mind is also a classic by Gordon. Other great tunes by him are Carefree Highway, The Circle Is Small, Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Early Morning Rain and For Lovin' Me.
No list of Gord's greatest works is not complete without "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"!
The whole Sundown album is ace 👌
Bob Dylan said Gordon Lightfoot was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. When Lightfoot was awarded the equivalent of a Grammy lifetime achievement award by Canada, Bob Dylan insisted on being the presenter.
If someone asks you how are you doing and you respond "I'm feeling no pain", it means your feeling really good.
YES, LOVE this swanky, goovy tune by the GREAT Gordon Lightfoot, regardless of who it's about!

You can never go wrong with Gordon Lightfoot✌❤🎶
I always thought I hated this song because I had a roommate who would sing it in the shower at 6am. Turns out you can't hate Gordon's music regardless of the circumstance.
Soul is not a music type..but songs that touch you..like this one or "I'll be around" from the spinners. Those make even my adult eyes go teary eyed. I love you reaction on this one.
If You Could Read My Mind was my favorite of his. I thought it was sublime
The better/shame line is a reference to his alcoholism from my understanding.
He says, "Sometimes I feel it's a shame, when I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain"
At that point in Gord's life he would not have called ti alcoholism, but "feelin' no pain" was definitely about the blur of alcohol intoxication.
Gordon is a great storyteller along with Harry Chapin. Wondering if you’ve ever reacted to any of his songs.
This Canadian has a beautiful method to tell a story! Greatest storyteller I’ve ever heard.
Old school term ‘ feeling no pain’ means being drunk. Shame he feels better drunk than not.
Harry, my man, loving that, you would also love 'Softly' another great romatic song to close your eyes to and drift with it. This and 'Beautiful' are his finest romantic songs, IMO

💜🇨🇦🎵😻 Gordon Lightfoot is a song writer & storyteller, musician who is beloved in Canada 🇨🇦🥰
"Feelin no pain" means drunk, as far as I know :)
BTW- I SAW HIM LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CIRCA…1973. ~ GREAT PERFORMER
"Rainy Day People" is my fave by him. Check it out when you get a chance. I won't go into the Cathy Smith story because others have already done so
HERE'S ANOTHER BIG HIT OF GORDON'S : CAREFREE HIGHWAY 😊

Gordon lightfoot was super great, born story teller. Perfect voice for ballads.
This and Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.
Just a great artist, never got the acclaim he should have
"Sit Down Young Stranger" is a favorite.
LOVE this song! Love trying to remember when the lyrics repeat! 👍✌️
Carefree Highway, PLEASE
My favorite song by him is a little known tune called " Approaching Lavender ".
My favorite Gordon album....
You gotta hear Daylight Katy, The Circle is Small, and a ton of other great tunes ✌️👍
The relationship didn't last but he got a hit song out of it.this would be the first song I every heard from him.
"Feeling no pain", high or drunk...feeling better means sobering up.
I just watched a documentary on Gordon Lightfoot recommended by Rick Beato of UA-cam. This song is about a back-up singer and musician "groupee" who almost ruined Gordon Lightfoot and gave John Belushi his lethal dose of "speed ball".
You should listen to “shadows “. Great song!!!
Well, greetings from Canada again, eh!! Gordon Lightfoot is a legendary Canadian troubadour and a National Treasure!! Some people write songs, Gordon Lightfoot creates music!!!
This is my favorite of Gordon's. As you pointed out, it's uplifting despite the lyrics.
Kinda fun fact 🤷🏼♂️ Gordon most likely wrote this about the stormy relationship with his one time girlfriend Cathy Smith, who was later sentenced for delivering a lethal dose of heroin to John Belushi. Gordon was very jealous and drank heavily and was apparently an angry, abusive drunk 🙁
great one..bless you brother
Late summer 1974. The solo singer/ songwriter trend of the 1970's was the greatest. Lightfoot was by trade a folk singer, who appealed to more than just the folk music audiences. the list is long of the names of male and female solo songwriter/ performances of the 1970's. And duos.
