    For Elena Mukhina who had been ignored during her younger years by her own team to reach this level of incredible skill at 18 is amazing.
    The extreme cruelty and risks in her training that followed this achievement to try and force an Olympic victory led to bans.
    After breaking her leg and having her cast ripped off before her leg was healed and then being forced to train was horrible on its own, but then add to it that her coach forced her to do the Thomas Salto which she objected to and that led to her spine snapping when she landed on her chin.
    RIP Elena. You were an amazing athlete and deserved so much better.

    A resounding victory for the sophisticated and captivating Yelena Mukhina. Personally, I feel she deserved a 10 on floor.
    Nelli Kim was overscored slightly on every apparatus. She was nowhere nearly as exquisite as Mukhina.
    The trials and tribulations of Nadia were agonizing to watch. F☆CK you Jim McKay for trivializing her motivation, weight and a last minute floor routine imposed on her.
    A 9.90 for Kathy Johnson on floor was much too high. It was classical and refined, but not really amazing.

    • @robertwill23

      I disagree I think Nelli KIm's beam routine was beautiful with some interesting creative elements. and difficulty was there on all her events. and fluidity of whole combination. all her events were perfect. she had assertive elegance and cohesion in her performances. her personality also just shone through those routines.

    OMG...I remember this broadcast and how upset I was about Jim McKay's comments about Nadia's weight, and being all overdramatic about her falling from the bars ("Nadia Comaneci, completely coming apart on the uneven bars, where she thrilled the world at Montreal". I was in tears (hey, I was like 9 years old) b/c I didn't realize Nadia couldn't hear the commentators. Seriously though, even now as an adult, I'm angry with Jim McKay for those comments. Luckily, Nadia is living a happy life now in the US w/Bart Conner and their son, Dylan.

    31:19 The MAN commentator makes a comment about the "conditioning program" of the Romanian team and the weight of Emilia Eberle, stating that she is "too thin". And you hear the woman commentator, Cathy Rigby, act like she never heard him say it, she goes on like nothing was said about "weight". To speak about weight at that time was unheard of, especially from a commentator on a televised event. I loved watching gymnastics when I was a little girl and compared myself to these girls all the time. My mother suffered with an Eating Disorder (Anorexia) when I was growing up but no one in our family said a word about it. There are pictures from when I was a teenager (16) that show my mom as skeletal (think Eugenia Cooney thin) , and I never heard a word about it from my father or anyone else at all. When I started the same thing at 17, no one said anything either. It was not until I was 29 that I heard the word Anorexia from a doctor when I was hospitalized for my appendix. He talked to me about it and set me up with a psychologist who helped me alot. I applaud this commentator, I wish I would have known about this disease back then, I might have known what to look for in my mom and myself, this disease controls your whole life, your whole existence. Maybe I would have never given so much of my life to an ED if I had been educated about it along with my peers.

    • @kras118
      @kras118 6 років тому +14

      Thank you for sharing. Cathy Rigby, too, struggled with an eating disorder during her career-- I'm sure she was unsure how to proceed in regards to that subject-- like you said, it was almost unheard of in the public sphere! I know several women who also suffered from ED in the 1970s, but had no clue what it was. Not until Karen Carpenter's death in the early 80s did we even start talking about ED in the American culture.
      I am 12 years in recovery from my ED-- I'm glad your doctor helped you get the treatment you needed! Let's hope the young people who watch gymnastics today are safe and healthy.

    That was not a good time for Nadia. The dictator Ceaușescu removed Comăneci from her longtime coaches, the Károlyis, and sent her to Bucharest to train at the sports complex. He took away any freedom she had and in effect put her prison. She was extremely unhappy; her gymnastics skills suffered, and she appeared to attempt suicide by drinking bleach or Shampoo. Also, she had just had a growth spurt and was seven inches taller and twenty pounds heavier" than she was in the 1976 Olympics.

She was separated from her coach Karolyi and was being used and abused by Romanian President...this poor girl didn't have the charmed life that many felt she had. Happily a year later she was probably in the best shape of her life. Just watch videos from 1979...best gymnast ever!!
