I bought one of these new in 1989, it also is an original 58072. It was on sale (around $330 AUS on sale as it was "old new stock" by then). Dad I built it & I had the shell painted by someone else, unfortunately in two tone black and red : ( instead of the blue it was meant to be... ) Still looks great. Still goes, but I don't use it in fear crashing it. Mine came with the Technigold motor & I still have the box and bits that it came in. I also have a Fox in bits that I bought 2nd hand in 1989. I bought a Technigold motor for that & still have that too. The problem with the Fox is that, from memory, the rear dog leg? tail shafts wore out really quick, probably because of the extra power from the Technigold, compared to the stock 540 motor. My Fox was also fully ball raced. It was a great car too & run with an ESC. Loved the Avante though & recently bought from ebay, NOS original plastic wheels and tyres, as I had broken the originals. I also recall some part of the front suspension was notorious for breaking & I was able to buy an upgraded part in the early 90's which was more robust. It is set up with Acoms Techniplus 3 controller, can't recall the brand of the ESC, it has NEC Japan on the heat sinks & FET on the front, but as it is jammed in behind the Acoms receiver, I can't see a brand on it, but it was expensive & didn't have reverse, but it has braking when you pulled the lever back to reverse on the controller. I still have the race driver & stickers and never put it together - it's all still in plastic. Had the window painted black instead, for two reasons, the old school ESC I use wasn't Tamiya & took up too much room & I also considered the cockpit & driver unnecessary added weight.

Was going through my parent's attic when visiting last month with the grandkids and found my old RC cars (they never throw anything away)... First edition Avante was in there with all the bits, manual etc.. no box though. Oh it brought back memories. Built a few modern kits in (not Tamiya) in recent years and the thing that struck me about the cars I found in the attic (Avante, Hornet, Boomerang, Hotshot, Hilux) was how much play/slop there is in the moveable parts. I'm not complaining, I loved every minute of building and driving them growing up.. it was just interesting.

Absolutely drooled over this car when I was younger. It still looks amazing after all these years. I do not know if you do this, but, one of the ways I employ to clean parts is a jewelry ultrasonic cleaner with simple green and water. It does a fantastic job of getting all the old grease and dirt off the parts.

My box is in way worse shape. As is my Avante - because teenage me used the heck out of it back at the beginning of the '90s 😅but I never managed to break the first edition uprights, only repeatedly stripped the middle diff gear and the front shock mounts.
Its a glorious car! Cherish it!

Had one of these when it came out. It was my first build at 12, was quite tricky. The uprights were shockingly bad, lasted about a week, the UK ones didn't come with a motor or speed controller. The front control arms also were easy to bend. I share your view of the problems with getting the shell on and off. It was obviously way too advanced for my first build but I loved it. Lovely car and lots of great memories. Thanks for sharing.

I was born in to Tamiya, Dad got me the Boomerang in 86... ish... and raced it. When this came out I was all aboard getting it, then the (I think) price tag was over 400 US dollars. The Koyosho Optima was just under 300 US dollars. for the other 100 I picked up a Tekin ESC and was racing faster than the Avante. It just wasn't the car that it made its name for... lots of engineering but there was to much to adjust and it took alot to adjust it.. and one hit, and it was out of adjustment. Even 5-6 year old Yokomos were blowing the doors off this rig... sad, was/is a great car... just didn't live up to its name. Lots of stuff Tamiya should of stayed with what worked..... like the wheels.....

They say you should never meet your heroes. The Avante is my Unicorn; It was my first RC back around 1990 and i straight up wrecked it. It's way up there on my wanted list. I could get a Black Edition now which would need some parts hunting to make it look close enough to the original. I could also get an Arrma Infraction for the same amount of money. Really tough call for me..

..always looked awesome - remember one hobby shop always had it on display in 1989. The thing is from day one it was not competitive and everyone knew it. It was just too expensive for a looker to drive around the front yard, For the same money you could buy a schumacher cat, yokomo, or even kyosho optima mid and be much better off. Still always wanted it.. still do. ha ha.

Such an iconic vehicle. I have one myself but it's the 2011 re-release. I will say I know it may not have the same impact not being a true 1988 vehicle but I did built it myself. That experience was the best, the details, the parts, everything was just amazing putting it together. I have no intentions of running it anytime soon, but maybe in the future? Who knows, for now this is a true iconic vehicle sitting in my Rc garage as a shelve queen. Great video😎🤘

My RC-Involvement started somewhere around 1990. I got the Tamiya Avante 2001 for christmas (my mother unfortunately mixed up the Avante with the Avante 2001...). I bought the Re-release Avante some 30 years later, ran it for an hour or so in the dirt and decided, that it will become a shelf queen. There are way better 4WD Buggies (Schumacher, Losi etc.) on the market than the Avante. Nevertheless - looking at my Avante (with orange metallic body) still gives me chills down my spine, because it looks so frickin´awesome ;_)

On a side note, if you have one of these to thrash on and desire it to do more that a 9quad.... Mod the upper chassis plate, to fit a longer canned motor like the 750 to 800.... and gear it to the hilt... 60 to 75 mph... While being 4wd... Lol... Just don't wreck!!!!, As it will be all over and you will have to look for pieces... Ask me how I know this, lol.. Sorry, I don't mean to rant, but, seeing many of your videos, has brought up many memories of a better time in my life... Thank you, Dru

I had the very first Avante in the country.... (I think) it was bought in from a German toy fair by the owner of my local model shop and I had to beg him to sell it to me.
I used a futaba 112b speed controller and a technigold... the mark 1 had the original uprights which were hollow channels with hardly any gusset re-enforcement (as yours) and the rear upright lower pivot screws treaded into wishbones the later one threaded into the uprights and pivoted on the wishbone. I still have it! but it was heavily modified and raced for many years only the instructions decks and rear gearbox is original I’m off to check what it says on my instructions

I had this edition back in the day. It's the only one of my cars that I ever sold, and that was because of the poor engineering on the front shock towers, plus their "unitized" diffs between the wheels would also not last very long before the brass gears inside would wear out and strip no matter how much lube you loaded them with. But those front shock towers would break so easy, and they were impossible to fix, as they were just made of cheap pot metal. Replacements were $16 for a pair, which was expensive. I also got PO'd at their proprietary ESC/receiver combo, as I could see that as a recipe for LOTS of money down the drain, and lots of time waiting for repair. I never went with their recommended electronics, and simply painted the canopy black, and deleted the driver model, giving me some extra room inside to fit a separate ESC and receiver. A great looking car, but over-engineereing, and low quality killed it, along with the prohibitive price. Plus it weighed a TON compared to Schumacher Cats and Kyosho Ultimas, so would get stomped at the track every time unless you ran a PERFECT race.

Great video. I have an Avante 2001 which was purchased around 93-94 I believe as a xams present from father xmas.... I totally loved this car as a kid. Due to this COVID-19 I have time on my hands so I'm trying to get this back up and running. Parts are proven difficult to obtain (especially wheels), I've updated t speed controller and battery to a li-po whilst waiting for parts to arrive. Despite it's age I'm blown away by its technology/ suspension etc. Im finding many plastic components have cracked just like ur quad-lock wheel nut (all x4 of mine are brittle/ cracked). Lastly, is there a motor upgrade u would recommend as currently I have a 'black-sport tuned' motor however the technigold motors are all ridiculously expensive considering they're all used/ worn. Thanks again for the great video!

I also have both front and rear CNC machines gear box cases. I was also experimenting on some gear box casement that drops the piano wire dampened driveshaft, which convert this to a belt drive... I never finished it, as the area was so tight, and stones and dirt would cause issues, and if I remember, something to do with the lower chassis plate needed modified to allow dirt and rocks to call out, but can't open the bottom up further, as not much was there to begin with, and needed to make the stuff wider, so that could happen... Then got bored with that attempts.. Then found my interest in the "insane run course" at Indianapolis, Indiana, VeloDrome, bicycle track with banker oval turns... that is a while other set of stories...

  • @Chriswizzv12

Nice car, such time warp condition. I remember the Avante, infact I have a photo of one being raced at Harrogate MCC in 1989. It always felt to me to be over engineered, with new buggies at the time sticking with a similar design, Lazer zx (my car at the time) pro cats and Yokos. I think Tamiya missed out and the later models, Astute etc were seldom seen, certainly in my experience.
As for yours, I personally would keep it as it is, cleaned and pehaps with the decals re-aligned. Some of the issues are part of the buggies provenance, I think too much improvement work would detract from its originality.
But I wouldn’t sell it, myself anyway. As I think you would in time regret it......
    Regards

I can remember mine had ony 1 nut on each link. I used a mecanical speed controller that was designed to mount on top of the servo. Can not remember what brand i was. Was a fun and fast car.

Just further to my previous comment today, I have now checked my instruction book (in reference to your comment @ 20:34) & mine also has 0388 next to the c1988 on the front. I have no doubt whatsoever that it means the book was printed in March 1988. If you saw one with 0488, it would have been printed April 1988. Also, inside my book where it shows the problematic uprights, back in the day my father has circled them & written a reference number with $16.50 + $2.50, so one would assume that was when we must have ordered the improved uprights. In reality, there shouldn't have been any charge at all for them, Tamiya should have supplied replacements for free. Anyhow... You can see the photo of mine now as I have made it my profile photo (which might not update for a few hours). As I said, disappointing that I had it painted in red & black instead of the correct blue, but at 16 y.o. back then & being the late 80's, two tone was considered cool-ish, but then again so were Mullet hair styles & fluro clothing....

I filled the vertical bits of the original uprights with epoxy to use as race spares. Mine got converted with aTamiya LWB carbon chassis hopup. Has anyone seen one of those? they must be pretty rare.

Back in the day, I used to face professionally, back in the era of May Halsey, Tim Novak, Hoy Mistubura, etc... I used to run this rig, and guess what... I still have something like 10 to 12 of these still in their box, of course about 10 or so, that are assembled, raced, some worn, some modified, some wrecked, lol..massive amount of spare parts, upgrade parts, that were not used, like the ball diff kits for front and rear, shock kits,, pin tires, cam lock wheels, even the aluminum cam lock wheels which were made way too thin, and one bump and they would bend, so there is 10 to 30 sets of those.... Blah... Blah... Blah.... I have one that I spent about $12,000 US dollars on, as I machined many of the aluminum parts, out of titanium, which 20 to 30 years ago, was all but unheard of, which was an attempt to make it stronger in the hiem joints linkages, and other random parts that needed upgraded.. I wish I had sold them all a few years ago, as I seen a couple Avanti's on Ebay, and they were going for a couple thousand bucks... and now, they reissued the units, and they can be purchased for couple hundred bucks now... Snooze I loose... I may dig one out, and see what one of those brushless motors would do in it, lol... As brushless stuff is way after my time... wonder if the dirt kicked up would cause an issue for a brushed motor?

@@TAMIYALegends it sure would be nice, but, I doubt it... As you can buy most of these legendary vintage famous cars and trucks, for next to nothing... Example, the BRUSIER, can be purchased for $280.00 USD, brand new, of course, it is a reissue, but still the same, and even has some upgrades from places like alibaba, aliexpress, Shanghai exports, etc... I have seen them as cheap as $220.00, if you buy 4 of them at a time... the AVANTI, through the same exporters, $180.00 plus shipping, again, even cheaper then that, if you buy several kit at once, and yes, they are the unit like the gen 1's... Mine are not worth anything. I missed the bandwagon that I could have made a pretty good but of money, but that ship has sailed for me, lol... the SAND SCORCHER series of chassis, either being the VW Beetle body, or the sand rail arrow body, those as a rolling chassis kit, $40 bucks plus s/h.. Heck, the HORNET, GRASSHOPPER, series of buggies, just the rolling chassis kit, with wiper speed controller, (no radio gear), $16 bucks USD.. I hope that may help you find parts you might need of kits you wish to add to the collection.. there is a catch 22, for this, if you have never imported products directly from Asia.... It will come buy boat!!!!!!!!!! that means, plan on it taking 10 years, to 15 weeks for it to get to your doorsteps... I would recommend, if you intend to go to the trouble of hassle, do it in a large order, as it will be cheaper, and more secure, due to the size of the order not getting lost. Imagine trying the order enough, to fill a wood shipping skid/pallet... 4ft. X 4ft. X 4ft. Approx... No other packages will be set on top of yours, it is always handled by a fork truck... Good luck. A side note, I feel sorry for the folks who spent huge bucks, several years ago, on trying to acquire many of these units, as I remember seeing the brusier, and mountaineer series of trucks selling for $2000, $3000, $4000 bucks on ebay...not that anybody knew that these were gonna be re-issued in mass quantity's over the past 5 to 6 years now.. Who knew???

It tried to be a pro cat but just didn't have the skills but aesthetically it's one of the best looking buggys ever in 1990 they cost about 200.00 pounds which was a lot back then

So why did the Avante fail or not stand out on race tracks compared to it's competition in the day? The design/engineering looks amazing for the day.

      Great question buddy.
I think it’s biggest down fall was it’s short wheelbase, the Vanquish, Avante 2001 and Egress all came with the longer wheelbase 👊🏻

TAMIYA Legends my family owned a chain of model shops called the “model shop” now called antics online,I raced every Tamiya buggy and one of these ,biggest problem they were to heavy ,I used to get beat by modified hotshots at the track .

    • @MrFu75
      @MrFu75 5 років тому

The Avante steering was sloppy even worse over bumps, it suffered with deflections, the wheelbase defo had something to do with it I had a Cat swb at the time, was desperate for Tamiya to succeed with Avante, anyway remember seeing a regular club driver buy and invest in hot ups on Avante and get beaten by stock Vanquish when that was released. I've got a 1988 Yokomo yz870c super dogfighter here (my holy grail), rc technology has never moved as quick as in that era. Sadly Avante was to late to the market, Best wishes Fu.

It makes me chuckle that we are so anal about the buggies, but most of us can’t paint a driver to save our lives. I used to paint all my mates drivers cos I used to model as well. I got my dad to paint one once (he was a figure painter) and it looked real ..... realer that the real Nigel Mansell, who let’s face it wasn’t very real at all 😬

Notice the steering servo further back. I have a bigwig everytime it crashed you had to reset the servo. Annoying as a 10 year old lol

When I build my 2011, I am going to use MCI decals for the sponsors. I just can't stand the off the wall generic re-re decals. dumb.

Lovely Avante right there. One thing..remember that silicone destroys the rubber over time..so i would suggest you use some other rubber enhancing/refreshing product.Just a fun fact :) Try out one of the 1/1 car care products for tires...tire gel from either Turtle Wax...or even the glorious english brand Autoglym. They do contain silicone..but is meant for this application..so you wont ruing the rubber.I hope you are doing greeat mister.Greetings from Norway,Stefan

You keep making a major mistake when talking about the chassis on this car and well all of this type materials. It is NOT FRP . F.r.p. stands for fiberglass reenforce plastic. What that material actually is fiberglass or carbon fiber. It is NOT however FRP. Please moving forward say use the correct name for the material that is used

Hey thanks for the info, but on double checking on google lol, both Tamiyabase.com and Wikipedia both list the chassis as FRP 😬
