When I was seven years old my granddad gave me a used 8 ft Penn Yan dinghy along with an unrestored, Firestone 3.6 outboard...haha. That engine sparked the beginning of my love affair with all outboard motors. My elderly Firestone had some issues, so as a young boy I would always give it a "pep talk" before I started tugging on the pull cord which for some reason seemed to work. Your restoration is magnificent and at the age of 65, this video has flooded me with so many great memories. Cheers!!!!
I have this same Boat Motor but mine says GOODYEAR My Dad got it for my 16 ft Conoe in a pawn shop. $35 Still have it. My son is 40 now & his earliest memories are being in front of the Conoe going to the Swimming Hole with it. Great little Motors
Greetings from Texas. It's great to see someone do a proper resto any project and to get results that make it factory fresh. Fantastic work. I would like to see in detail on how the starting procedure is.
starting is done just like I did in the video just make sure the vent on the top of the gas cap is open and put lever in "start" and hold the choke in as you pull the rope.
bigdmc1 Thanks for the tip about the vent. I did clean the carb. What about the other settings It has what I believe is the original Firestone plugs in great condition. No rust in the tank. It has good spark too.
Where did you find the water pump. I got a Scott Atwater 3.6 that’s not starting but I need to find avid on carburetor adjustments. These are the best trolling motors because they can run so slow. Slower than any other gas motor
Just bought same motor in cambellsport, wi .... its in operating shape but id like to get original handle and the draw string cover. Then restore it as you did.
Nice Motor, What year is this 3.6 ? I just picked one up that looks 99% like yours, only difference is no pull start recoiler. It is stamped 470-1881 on the side of the motor and the plate states 3.6HP 4000rpm. I assume mine is a 1947 based on model 470 . i am starting the restoration now
I have my grandfathers 3 hp Firestone I believe it was purchased after my dad came home from ww2 many bought 46/50 ? It does not look to ever had paint , it is silver , rope start , still runs fine ,. Could you reply as to if there was paint on the gas tank , if has a water pump and if so where one could be purchased . It is the same as yours except the starter
need a starter rope with and anchor for a TN26 johnson 5horse or best way to make and anchor for the end the old one had a wire that attached to the anchor
Wish you would have shown a little more of the butterfly valve after plating and the needle and seat repair. Also what is that stuff you dipped the cork into?
Aren't you missing a handle on the back of the motor ? Just asking because I had a 3.5 Scott Atwater that looked very similar (in white) and it had that painted stamped steel handle. In any case, beautiful job ! (and happy with the sound). And by the way, mine had pinholes as well that were simply brazed with lead.
I'm curious...what is you mix ratio for oil to gas. It doesn't appear that your motor smokes much. I have a 1958 Johnson 3hp and the mix ratio is 1/2 pint (8oz )of oil to a gallon of gas and smokes like crazy. I've checked the rings and appear to be in good shape. Any suggestions other than just mixing in less oil? I've tried to lean it out with the adjustments on the carb but no luck.
What a beautiful restoration job. Great video work too. Where did you find the matching paint and what brand of primer do you use for an outboard motor?
I just acquired a firestone motor that is almost idential. Mine doesn't include the rewind start. Any idea where to get parts or service manuals for these motors? Great video. (and GO PACKERS!)
I have a firestone motor like this, a friend gave it to me, but it doesn't have a spring coil starter like that, this one you just wrap rope around it, I would like to know how old this motor is, an were do I get parts? You done such a great job on yours, I would like to do mine as well! Thanks any help is appreciated.
Great video! I have a 58' Scott 3.6 just like this. Where did you get your carb kit from? I've never tried to make my own cork yet but you made it seem easy
Thanks! The sound reminded me of boating on the Delaware with my Pappy when I was little. Did they originally use cork floats in the carb? If so, was the dope your idea or did they coat it originally?
Too bad I didn’t see this earlier back in 2008 I acquired some vintage Firestone outboard parts no motors just parts some from a 16 hp Firestone and some from a 3.6 hp gas tank was clean carbs from both magnetos props lower units I sold it all back in 2015
nice looking but please dont say extremely cold like 50 degrees i dont know where you are but cold for me is like -30 im in canada and warm here is like 25 degrees

Very nice job. None of mine look nearly that good. Keep up the good work.
Just bought same motor in cambellsport, wi .... its in operating shape but id like to get original handle and the draw string cover. Then restore it as you did.

Where do you get the kit to rebuild the carburetor
Очень похож на советский лодочный мотор "стрела-5", "зиф-5", топливный бак один в один похож. Управление дросельной заслонкой идентично.

Hey there motors looking good! I took recoil off mine to put new rope on. Anyone know how to rewrap the spring?
Where is the water pump located? I have that same engine and it doesn't pump water.
on top of the flywheel just to the left of the steering wheel, right below the injectors. Can't miss it.
Hey man 2019 here I was wondering were you got the pull rope handle and the steering tiller handle great video and god bless
Thanks! The sound reminded me of boating on the Delaware with my Pappy when I was little. Did they originally use cork floats in the carb? If so, was the dope your idea or did they coat it originally?
Do you do work for other people? I've got one for yah. I just don't have the time or tools 😞
No sorry I do not have the time either to work on one. I barely have enough time for myself

Too bad I didn’t see this earlier back in 2008 I acquired some vintage Firestone outboard parts no motors just parts some from a 16 hp Firestone and some from a 3.6 hp gas tank was clean carbs from both magnetos props lower units I sold it all back in 2015
Nice motor but the ignition timing seems to be wrong. Maybe thats why firestone outboards are only vintage aviable.
Excellent work bigdmc ! What years were those made about? Were they just branded by Johnson or Mercury? Cool video man!
GREAT JOB!!!
How much???
I have an elgin 3.5hp that looks just like this motor
I want your job!
جيد جدا ممتاز 👍👍👍💛
You need to adjust the idle mixture screw! This is why it dies at low speeds! It is set too rich.
nice looking but please dont say extremely cold like 50 degrees i dont know where you are but cold for me is like -30 im in canada and warm here is like 25 degrees
