Graham Lewis and that is why I constantly consume painting tip, tricks and tutorials. I once almost ‘skipped’ watching a 36 minute video on brush care thinking I knew the best way to do that. I went back and watched it and it has totally changed my brush care regiment.

Remember to use a brush a step larger than you would for layering and try to use natural bristles over synthetic, as it will hold more wash and allow you to do more without the need to pause, clean and refill your brush. Size 1 minimum, most likely 2 or 3 and if you put too much on by accident, just wash out the brush, damp it out on the paper towel so it is damp not dry and then soak the excess off of the model.

I never thought of thinning my wash as it's already thinned out.. But it make sense though as it might give you more controll over it.. Well, I have to try it for myself.

I just started trying citadel washes, and my first mistake is a doused a few miniatures too much. I had a glossy and a non glossy nuln oil I experimented with. But i noticed that even the non glossy nuln oil gave the acrylic painted surface even more of a shine.
The glossy was noticebly much glossier, but I wasn't expecting a shine from the mat wash.? Maybe in using too much?

Hello, I"m about as green to the hobby as you can get, and I was looking for a video/ tutorial on actually cutting the pieces out of the frame. Like how close to cut to the actual piece and techniques on how to remove the spur left behind. I know this is pretty trivial than most of your other tutorials and how too's but this was a big investment for me and I'd like to go in with as much knowledge as possible. Thank you so much for everything you put out, it makes jumping into what seams like and impossible hobby a lot more manageable but more importantly enjoyable!!
Uncle Adam has a vid on prepping your minis which covers that. Or search for prepping models and miniatures. The plastic modelers are even more fastidious and particular than us miniature painters about cutting plastic pieces off sprues.

When I started, Inks were my wash as well. Green Ink over Bad Moonz Yelllow and Skull white was my warpstone green!... I played Skaven. I got lots of practice.
Glad this was posted, i finished my first model a few days ago! The basecoat was okay, but then I tried to wash it and it ruined it.
no stress paint rarely destroys models, most paints can be stripped real easy, Atom actually has a few videos on different ways to do it

A "wash" when I started out in the seventies, was a color darker than the painted area with, maybe some black added, and diluted with water to make the recesses darker.

Up until now I’ve just been slogging wash across my figures until every crevasse is dark. It looks acceptable on muddy figures like Orks but always made the clean-looking figures a bit disappointing. This technique makes way more sense

what is your opinion on dipping?
The Army Painter starter set comes with a little booklet, that instructs new hobbyists to dip their minis in Quickshade. I'm highly conflicted, if not totally against that technique, as it is really messy and one has no control over where the shade ends up.

I just started painting miniatures about a month ago. I got through a box of Cadian infantry and was pretty pleased with the wash on them. The wash gave them the desire effect. I then moved to some dwarf minis from Mantic Games. Paint job was still pretty good. However, when I applied the wash on them, I noticed that in areas it rested, it looked like a spot I missed to paint and it made the armor look glossy instead of weathered. Is there different washes for say, armor?
Is it possible to do before and after photos, to show a more discernible difference?

What is a filter? What is the difference between a wash and a filter? Is it filter or philtre?
I’ve been very conservative with my washes, only using them on things like chainmail and black cloth. Seeing it used here is making me think I should try it with more stuff, but I still remember how a guy I know washed his white figures with black.... it looked a bit like he had spilled cola on his mini.

It would seem my washes have been too thin. I've been doing 4:1 water to paint when thinning black paint for it. Now I'm hearing Sam say half and half.
He is thinning a wash (Army Painter Strong Tone) so it's already starting off very thin. If you're thinning a paint you're going to want to add a lot more water, so 4:1 might not be wrong in your case.

yes but why? i asked about this on the previous video, in which they described what they were showing as a beginner technique. My point was that washes are much easier and quicker than the technique that was being shown. I'm pretty sure I could match what sam did in a 'novice' fashion by just putting 2-3 washes of seraphim sepia over the base yellow.
@@auto1nfanticid3 I think that you'd not get smooth transition compared to the technique. Also depends how this is filmed and light used.
Nevertheless good question. For me I was interesting to understand better the blending technique on simple example.
As Sam said in the video, sometimes you don't bother with washes at all and do your color layering and blending to make your transitions. Other times, a wash can give a better effect. Each technique is for different looks. Thanks for watching!
