My Grandad sung this to me as a child and he sadly passed away when I was nine, and since then I've been trying to find it, and I just cried more than anything. I miss him so much
This song turned me into a hoarder. Every time I think about throwing old toys away or old clothes, I think about poor Camel feeling discarded and unloved and I just can't LOL
Thanks so much, this song has always touched me. I'm 42 now and I remembered this song as a child and at that time I cried because there was no love surrounding me at the time. Thank you so much for posting this on youtube and God bless the songwriter of this song. Everyone wants to be loved and treated with respect. This world would be a much better place if everyone would just love one another and help any and everyone they can. I will continue to pray for love. Love Always, JazzyTLF :) :) :)
Young animators, learn from the master here- Art Babbitt. Look at the thought that went into this ultra-warm and lovable performance by the camel. Interestingly- among other choices- Babbitt treats the camel as if he were two men in a suit, with two different personalities- seen in the distinct dancing styles- for the front legs (who are clearly in charge) and the more childlike and spontaneous back end. Very entertaining...
One of my Raggedy Ann books is about the Camel trying to find his special talent, and when he tried to sing, the book said he couldn't carry a tune. I was like, this movie he was a country singer singing a song all about being depressed and wanting someone to love him.
*snuggles the camel* Hey, we've all been there, buddy... :'( This movie is pretty trippy, and the bit with "The Greedy" gave me nightmares. I think from the age of four, I blocked this movie out and convinced myself I imagined it...but I must have liked this song, because when I watched the movie elsewhere on UA-cam I was saying to myself, "Yeahhhh...YEAH, I remember that!"
Actually, Raggedy Ann is older. Johnny Greulle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter Marcella back in 1915 as a doll and her story was published in 1918. The Velveteen Rabbit was first published in 1922. Raggedy Ann is the original Toy Story. :-)
you can say this movie is on acid all you want, but you have to admit: This is a really good scene. The backgrounds are amazing, the song is really catchy, and the design and movement of the camel is a lot of fun. This is by far the best part of the movie.
i thought about this song and cartoon last week. this song has always been charming to me. for all you sesame street heads(1970's) joe raposo who was the genius behind of all the music from the show, wrote this as well. thank you so much for the post.
Yeah, I can't imagine imagine a mother who would throw away their child's favorite toy. Then again my family is of the impression that you're never to old to still love dolls and stuffed animals. My mom has a bear that her aunt gave her when grandpa was in the hospital.
Sweet, sad little camel. You'll always be my "I love you." On an unrelated note, I found it odd, even as a kid, when at 3:40 the Raggedy siblings did a little happy dance. It's like the animator forgot what was thematically going on in the scene. That, or maybe they are schizophrenic rag dollies.
Yep, a master class by the great Art Babbitt, veteran of "Snow White" era Disney. He actually gave the camel three personalities- the head and the two sets of legs. The front half of the body is the more sensible, but finally gives in and dances a little. The camel hardly takes notice of his two sets of dancing legs, except to shoot them a look every now and then. "How can you be happy?" Just like you said, the sort of detail that makes it special.
A beautiful job by the late, great Art Babbitt- thoughtful acting, loaded with spot-on caricature, pathos, warmth, and appeal. I got to meet him and talk to him once, and I brought this scene up as I had just discovered it at the time. Does anyone know if this song was ever recorded elsewhere? Helen Reddy, or somebody? I've always had a strong memory of it from childhood, but I didn't see this film as a child.
To be honest; who hasn't felt like this camel at one point in their life? Like him I used to be one of the most important and beloved people in a special person's life. Then time went by and she decided to let me go. Now like this camel I am searching for someone to help me from feeling down and I just want to be loved.
Shiiiii...but...BUT...at the end of the movie, a kid found the camel and took him home, and...my FAITH was REVITALIZED!!! I can relate to this song oh too well, and like you, wanted someone to find me and say, "I'll take you...just how you are!!!" Don't worry...someone eventually will, and good luck!!! ❤❤❤😊
this song always put tears in my eyes. as i look back at it now, i loved this song so much is because joe raposo the man behind sesame streets music, this was his creation. joe raposo a genius gone. rip
@wyulittle Unbelievable. 20 year old mystery solved (and vindicated!)- can't thank you enough. My own memory for melodies amazes me sometimes. I wonder if she ever formally recorded it or I just saw that exact performance as a kid on some Saturday night in the seventies. If so, amazing that it remained on file somewhere in my odd brain. But when I saw this as an adult in the animation business, I heard Helen Reddy's voice singing it in my head immediately. Again, huge thanks!
The film is a great piece of history Unfortunately, Critics panned it but, even though the film has it's share of fans (i.e. Jerry Beck).. I doubt it will see a DVD release
While Mr. Snuffleupagus is indeed performed by two puppeteers simultaneously, Nelson and Robinson are, respectively, the originator and current performer of Snuffy's front half (and voice). And the animator here is very clearly playing with the idea that the camel is two guys in a suit.
I just recently saw this movie on youtube and some of it looked familiar (like The Greedy) but I didn't remember it. The only problem is though, I can't get this song out of my head! Oh yeah, it made it's way onto my iPod. ; )
It interesting how you actually believe that you're looking at THREE living entities even though there's suposed to be only one. It really does seem like that's two guys in a camel costume, and the head is a third living being.
I know posters love the camel, but I'm sorry, as a child I thought he was a little weird. Didn't he keep seeing other camels off in the distance? Even Andy thought he was crazy. Now I can see the sweetness of the camel character as an adult.
Oh wow! I am a great fan of Raggedy Ann and Andy! I watched all the little video shorts from the movie. Could you possibly upload the duet they sing together when they search for Babette? And could you also upload the song "I'm just a rag dolly" ? Those were also my favorites! Thanks
It came out before I was even born! I guess I just assumed it was in the 80s because I watched it in the 80s. I wish they would put it out on DVD, but when I looked it up on wiki, they said it was commercially successful and there are no plans to. Oh well.
@SurferJoe1 ...Still, he keeps emphasis on the camel's expressive face and singing with a lot of "quiet" poses, and occasionally the sympathy-seeking camel darts his eyes back at the kids to see how they're responding to his sad story. Charming, lovable, and real. I like this guy, and I believe in him. Art Babbitt passed away in 1992. His modest gravestone (overlooking the Disney lot, quite ironically) quotes Shakespeare: "And those things do best please me that befall preposterously".
omg... I cannot believe that I am actually taking the time to comment yet again. Snuffy on Sesame Street was two guys in a costume...( Jerry Nelson, Martin P. Robinson) the credits prove it. The camel was played by Fred Stuthman... not Fred-front half and ****-back half. There are three types of people in the world. Optimists, Sadistics, and realists... I am the latter of the three...
OMG...I never realized how depressing this song is when I was little. Cause when you're little you don't really sink this stuff in, just watchin' the blue camel dance around... This is f*cked up... But yeah, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I also wish I could find a DVD version.
And now I just learned that my toxic mother threw all of my childhood plushies away now that I'm gone (I would have taken them with me if I could but it's a complicated situation and I didn't have the chance). I still have one, my favorite, but all the others are gone forever. This made me really sad and angry, and the only thing my step-father, the one who told me that she did this when I asked over the phone, had to say is "You're 21". Adults can like plushies, especially the ones that were so important to them in their childhood. But my family believes in cliche stuff like being too old for plushies or video games. And they look down on you if you don't believe that too. I'm really sad that I lost such a big part of my childhood forever. Even when I'm far away from her, my mother still finds ways to make my life worse, it's crazy. She might have thrown my Nintendo Switch games away too, because my step-father tried to find them but he only found the two that he bought. All the ones that are mine are unaccounted for. I don't want to believe it, but I wouldn't put it past my mother to do so. If the plushies are any indication, she has no problem with throwing away what belongs to me. That's part of the reason why she's toxic. She never gave me independance, she always had control over the things that belonged to me, even as an adult, and even now that I'm away. She's truly awful.
Through this whole song I'm just begging Anne to sing something cheerful. Sing Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers or one of those other songs, girl! That camel is so emo, yes, it's been said before, but it's true. I'll take him home if he'll stop singing the most depressing song I've heard since I watched that movie about Fivel the mouse and they sang Somewhere Out There.
Possibly the best song from the movie (not that it took much -_-). It has a catchy, country style twang to it. Heck, they could be playing this on country music stations and it would probably catch on :)
I wonder if the theatrical release was widescreen and the pan and scan editing is just really poor. The edge of the screen cuts off the camel's nose in several shots. If it were designed for 4:3 you would think the shots would be framed to keep everything on screen.
I know!!!🙏😫😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💔I always cry everytime I have to throw something away.💔Even when I have to change to a new cell phone!😫😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💔
I just LOVE how this camel was so obviously animated to look like two people in a camel costume. It's such a cool weird little detail.
I've always loved this song, but it really does give me a different vibe when I listen to it while depressed.
That camel seriously needs a hug.
Amazing animation, the camel's hump really looks like there's just two people wearing a camel costume dancing.
Thanks so much, this song has always touched me. I'm 42 now and I remembered this song as a child and at that time I cried because there was no love surrounding me at the time. This world would be a much better place if everyone would just love one another and help any and everyone they can. I will continue to pray for love. Love Always, JazzyTLF :) :) :)
This is a great sad and catchy song!!! I'd forgotten how cool this movie really was--back in the day!!!
Young animators, learn from the master here- Art Babbitt. Look at the thought that went into this ultra-warm and lovable performance by the camel. I have to wonder why we never see a Raggedy Ann or Andy in a Toy Story film with all the Easter Eggs?
Despite how depressing this song is, its my favorite out of all the songs in this movie.
you can say this movie is on acid all you want, but you have to admit: This is a really good scene. The backgrounds are amazing, the song is really catchy, and the design and movement of the camel is a lot of fun. This is by far the best part of the movie.
I have been alone all my life. I truly love this song. It comforts me somehow.
This is so cute. I love when Raggedy Ann & Andy are dancing along.
They're trying to cheer him up
The "blind little girl" cartoon came out in the 1940's. It was a Paramount Famous Studios production, "The Enchanted Square."
i thought about this song and cartoon last week. this song has always been charming to me. for all you sesame street heads(1970's) joe raposo who was the genius behind of all the music from the show, wrote this as well. thank you so much for the post.
I just watched the movie, it’s so goood , I love it so much!!
The way the art shifts throughout the movie is just bizarre. This is probably my favorite part of the movie though. Very nice music and animation.
Thanks for posting these clips! My memories of this movie are so faded now, this was a wonderful refresher!
THis song ROCKSSSS!! this video RULES!!!!! I remember the chorus from seeing this at 5 years old... I'm 36!!! Thanks for posting this!
Yeah, I can't imagine imagine a mother who would throw away their child's favorite toy. Then again my family is of the impression that you're never to old to still love dolls and stuffed animals. My mom has a bear that her aunt gave her when grandpa was in the hospital.
I've had this song stuck in my head for a couple of hours now so I'm so glad you have this video up. I loved this movie as a kid :D

They just got caught up in the rhythm.

thanks for this upload, I remember this movie when I was younger. Brings back really good memories!
This movie was released on the big screen in 1976. I remember because I saw it then when I was a kid.
this is such a fabulous throwback, all these videos are so trippy. I still sing the greedy song to myself. Great idea. The camel *is* emo.
A beautiful job by the late, great Art Babbitt- thoughtful acting, loaded with spot-on caricature, pathos, warmth, and appeal. I got to meet him and talk to him once, and I brought this scene up as I had just discovered it at the time.

❤❤❤😊
Looks like he's hurting almost everytime he says "How can you be.."
Best song in the entire movie!
Good god I thought I'd never find this movie again. My siblings and I watched this movie so much we wore the tape out.
I love Raggedy Ann and Andy and I have a nice collection of them found in thrift stores.
Waht a very sad but beautiful song!! This movie brings me way back to good all childhood times.
Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure
this made me smile and think of great childhood memories!!
this song always put tears in my eyes. as i look back at it now, i loved this song so much is because joe raposo the man behind sesame streets music, this was his creation. joe raposo a genius gone. rip

You can't tell me this camel isn't Eeyore's long lost twin they look so similar it's kinda funny
I LOVE this movie!!!! I really wish it would come on dvd too
This was stuck in my head this morning. The whole movie had some really nice songs in it.
I used to love this movie as a kid XD
this song brings back memories from my childhood.
The film is a great piece of history
Unfortunately, Critics panned it but, even though the film has it's share of fans (i.e. Jerry Beck).. I doubt it will see a DVD release
The Memories.... This.. Unico.. and Disney's Robin Hood were my all time favorites as a very young child.
my childhood! i found you!
::hugs::
my childhood
Best song in the movie, and possibly one of the greatest of all time in my opinion
Who's here in 2021?
It's not a show, it's a movie from the 80's. I loved it when I was a kid.
is it strange that last time i watched this i must of been barely 5, now i'm 22 and yet i remember all the words to this song?
While Mr. Snuffleupagus is indeed performed by two puppeteers simultaneously, Nelson and Robinson are, respectively, the originator and current performer of Snuffy's front half (and voice).
And the animator here is very clearly playing with the idea that the camel is two guys in a suit.
aside from this being a treasured childhood memory, I never noticed until now the appalled expressions on Raggedy Ann and Andy...they are disgusted.
This film is so trippy and messed up...yet this song is so touching...and...excuse me, I got something in my eye.
Daily song of my life
Yep. But, that's the life of the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees for you!^_^
I am actually impressed with this animation. It's surprisingly amazing.
This was so special to me as a kid
yea this was one of my favorite cartoon film as a kid... :)
I just recently saw this movie on youtube and some of it looked familiar (like The Greedy) but I didn't remember it. The only problem is though, I can't get this song out of my head! Oh yeah, it made it's way onto my iPod. ; )
When ever I can afford a DVD projector, I hope that they'll come out with this movie on DVD soon so I could watch it on the big screen.

I wish that they would release it on DVD. I have been looking for years. I can only remember only bits and parts of the movie.
2023
man i remember singing this as a kid!
Thanks for sending me this GOTHMIDNIGHTMERMAID.
It came out before I was even born! I guess I just assumed it was in the 80s because I watched it in the 80s. I wish they would put it out on DVD, but when I looked it up on wiki, they said it was commercially successful and there are no plans to. Oh well.

Does anyone remember an earlier recording that was in a minor key? I'm 72, and it still haunts me!
Damn this song hits hard...
OMG...I never realized how depressing this song is when I was little. Cause when you're little you don't really sink this stuff in, just watchin' the blue camel dance around... This is f*cked up... But yeah, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I also wish I could find a DVD version.
I think I might have seen part of it on TV a long time ago, I could swear I've heard that voice before.
OMG i think im gonna cry! memories!
Depressed people of the world unite and salute our national anthem! All hale the camel with the wrinkled knees!
I think the Raggedy Ann doll is Annabelle... Saw a photo of it somewhere.
low down saggy and blue =) haha
i love this song.
I remember this!!!! Is this from the musical movie?
Very true but, there are two decent toons in the '00s -- namely "Chowder" and "Untalkative Bunny"
And now I just learned that my toxic mother threw all of my childhood plushies away now that I'm gone (I would have taken them with me if I could but it's a complicated situation and I didn't have the chance). I still have one, my favorite, but all the others are gone forever.

Ann’s face is so cute
the song at the end of camels song, i guess home would be the name those voices are beautiful, who sings it?
Through this whole song I'm just begging Anne to sing something cheerful. Sing Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers or one of those other songs, girl! @dragon82a Yeah, I know the feeling. It's a sad song, but I think the upbeat music with the lyrics somehow balances it.
This movie is a not well known gem
i love the camel he's cute!
I know this comment was posted 5 days ago, but the name of that song was "Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers" I beleive.
Possibly the best song from the movie (not that it took much -_-). It has a catchy, country style twang to it. Heck, they could be playing this on country music stations and it would probably catch on :)
Also, he's like a freakin apatosaurus. His back end has a brain of its own!
someone needs to send me a mp3 link to this
mmm... as finally find a puzzle I missed since I was a little...
I wonder if the theatrical release was widescreen and the pan and scan editing is just really poor. The edge of the screen cuts off the camel's nose in several shots. If it were designed for 4:3 you would think the shots would be framed to keep everything on screen.
Best song in the movie. It's the only one I ever liked
@wyulittle Can't get that link to work, wyulittle....
