I'm kinda sick of the people labeling Ann and Andy's relationship as incestuous in the comments. My only guess is that they've never experienced a strong fraternal bond such as Ann and Andy's. I had this kind of bond with my cousin when we where younger. She meant a lot to me. And I'm sure she felt the same way. Yet none of us had the need to express our love in a carnal way. A hug, a smile, a kiss on the cheeks or an "I love you" were more than enough. And in my humble opinion that's the purest and strongest expression of love I've ever had in my life.

And, thinking of the first drawings of 1941 released on UA-cam, which were released in World War II, could be a couple. One of the drawings mainly talks about how unsalable they were separately, and this at a time when the war unfortunately separated many couples. Just like how much Ann was jealous enough to fall ill when another woman could come to Andy. In this way, it does not make sense to talk about incest, but to talk about how much the two possibilities are possible in the context of the drawings.
The creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy literally said that they're not related whatsoever. Everyone started thinking they were related because they look alike. There are plenty of old figurines that are official merchandise of them kissing. Technically, Ann & Andy are soul mates. After all, despite the presumed fact that they have claimed to be brother and sister -- as Ann herself mentions point-blank when we first meet Andy -- they were also made from the SAME fabric. I'm a fan of Richard Williams' animations, having grown up watching The Thief and the Cobbler, which is one of my favorite films to this day. My search for more of his work eventually led me to this movie just a couple of weeks ago. As a grad student currently living over 500 miles away from all of my friends and family, the stress and loneliness has been getting to me lately, but hearing this song for the first time was such a relief. It really has cheered me up and given me hope during this time in my life. The innocence and sincere affection portrayed in this scene continues to be a profound comfort to me and reminds me that I have people back home who love me and that I'll see them again soon.

I remember watching this on tv many years ago (probably around the early 1980s). I was liking the movie but once this song came on, I fell in love with it. It reminded me the kind of relationship my sister (the youngest and only girl in the family), and I once had. Out of her 4 older brothers which includes myself (I am the middle), we were the closest. Don't get me wrong, we still see each other, but we're not as close as we once were.
I'm home with a sore jaw preparing for an emergency root canal tomorrow just after having a cold, and because I'm so sore, worried about how to pay for it, lost job hours etc. I put this song in my iPhone on repeat to help ease myself and help me feel better. It works. :)

Guys its not that hard to understand. Yes, they have been portrayed as a couple. No, that doesn't mean they are one in this movie. Their relationship through the years varied, and has evolved. While originally they weren't related, they also were not a couple. Then in a few animated shorts (not produced by the owners of the Raggedies,) they were a couple. But as time went on they evolved to be portrayed as siblings. They are canonically siblings in this movie and other later raggedy media. Just because they have a duet does not mean they are in love. If you want to portray it that way, fine. But don't portray both that they are siblings and are a couple at the same time. Incest is not very raggedy ann-esque and just plain gross. I don't understand why some people think all cute lovey duets have to be strictly romantic-- sibling love is a very real and very wholesome thing, and I think we should just let the song be as intended. Joe Raposo write this to be a sibling duet. Not a romantic duet. Again, if you want to interpret it as romantic, fine. But please keep the incest out of it-- it's still just weird since they call each other brother and sister in this movie. And for goodness sakes, don't argue with people who interpret them as siblings about it!! Let us have our wholesome innocent fun with this adorable family.

And I know they were sewn from the same fabric because both were made to be a pair of dolls for the REAL Marcella (too bad Marcella Gruelle--whose family wrote the books and made the dolls--died at 13) & they were said to be brother and sister, and yet, as this film & a Fliesher cartoon shows, they act like solemates more than they act like bro/sis.
This was one of those songs that while still with my ex I considered "our song". I don't even care if this is pretty much written for the wrong type of characters. (Seriously, this sounds like a love ballad) It's downright beautiful and definately one of the film's highlights.

When Ann introduces herself to Marcella's new porcelain doll Babbette (who was imported from Paris, France by Marcella's Aunt Sophie) after Marcella leaves the room & leaves Ann in charge of the other toys, Ann has some of the other toys boost her up to Babbette's eye level once Babbette comes out from her box & asks the toys who they are, Ann directly say point-blank, "I'm Raggedy Ann & this -- she gestures to Andy, who politely responds back -- is my brother Andy."

guevashin: Johnny Gruelle created the characters. The Fleischer brothers just took creative licensing when they created their cartoon, as evidenced by The Camel With Wrinkled Knees, who was always made out of blue tattered materials, as opposed to the color-of-poo brown he was drawn in for the Fleischer cartoon.
I think the books are much clearer on that... I like the books for how much more clear they are on things. I was the kind of kid who, if I had grown up seeing this, it would have actually confused me further. Though I didn't grow up with the books either, sadly, but now that I've read them and seen this, I can see how different things would have been for me having grown up with either of them. I only had a Raggedy Ann doll and the Halloween special, and my mother never explained them to me...

Technically, Ann & Andy are soul mates. After all, despite the presumed fact that they have claimed to be brother and sister -- as Ann herself mentions point-blank when we first meet Andy -- they were also made from the SAME fabric. The only difference: Ann has a candy heart & Andy has a paper flower, as displayed brilliantly in this song.
They’re only brother and sister in this movie and in the 1970s Chuck Jones shorts. Canonically they’re a couple. The earliest animated films from the 1940s depict them that way.

I'm a fan of Richard Williams' animations, having grown up watching The Thief and the Cobbler, which is one of my favorite films to this day. My search for more of his work eventually led me to this movie just a couple of weeks ago. As a grad student currently living over 500 miles away from all of my friends and family, the stress and loneliness has been getting to me lately, but hearing this song for the first time was such a relief. It really has cheered me up and given me hope during this time in my life. The innocence and sincere affection portrayed in this scene continues to be a profound comfort to me and reminds me that I have people back home who love me and that I'll see them again soon.

My heart melted bro in 2021 during tough times
I remember watching this on tv many years ago (probably around the early 1980s). I was liking the movie but once this song came on, I fell in love with it. It reminded me the kind of relationship my sister (the youngest and only girl in the family), and I once had. Out of her 4 older brothers which includes myself (I am the middle), we were the closest. Don't get me wrong, we still see each other, but we're not as close as we once were.
I'm home with a sore jaw preparing for an emergency root canal tomorrow just after having a cold, and because I'm so sore, worried about how to pay for it, lost job hours etc. I put this song in my iPhone on repeat to help ease myself and help me feel better.

Guys its not that hard to understand.
Yes, they have been portrayed as a couple. No, that doesn't mean they are one in this movie.
Their relationship through the years varied, and has evolved. While originally they weren't related, they also were not a couple. Then in a few animated shorts (not produced by the owners of the Raggedies,) they were a couple. But as time went on they evolved to be portrayed as siblings.
They are canonically siblings in this movie and other later raggedy media.
Just because they have a duet does not mean they are in love. If you want to portray it that way, fine. But don't portray both that they are siblings and are a couple at the same time. Incest is not very raggedy ann-esque and just plain gross.
I don't understand why some people think all cute lovey duets have to be strictly romantic-- sibling love is a very real and very wholesome thing, and I think we should just let the song be as intended. Joe Raposo write this to be a sibling duet. Not a romantic duet.
Again, if you want to interpret it as romantic, fine. But please keep the incest out of it-- it's still just weird since they call each other brother and sister in this movie.

This was one of those songs that while still with my ex I considered "our song". I don't even care if this is pretty much written for the wrong type of characters. (Seriously, this sounds like a love ballad) It's downright beautiful and definately one of the film's highlights.

When Ann introduces herself to Marcella's new porcelain doll Babbette (who was imported from Paris, France by Marcella's Aunt Sophie) after Marcella leaves the room & leaves Ann in charge of the other toys, Ann has some of the other toys boost her up to Babbette's eye level once Babbette comes out from her box & asks the toys who they are, Ann directly say point-blank, "I'm Raggedy Ann & this -- she gestures to Andy, who politely responds back -- is my brother Andy."

I grew up watching this film, still enjoy it now, but when I was younger I was under the impression that these two weren't brother and sister :$ oops!

The Fleischer brothers just took creative licensing when they created their cartoon, as evidenced by The Camel With Wrinkled Knees, who was always made out of blue tattered materials, as opposed to the color-of-poo brown he was drawn in for the Fleischer cartoon.
I think the books are much clearer on that... I like the books for how much more clear they are on things. I was the kind of kid who, if I had grown up seeing this, it would have actually confused me further. Though I didn't grow up with the books either, sadly, but now that I've read them and seen this, I can see how different things would have been for me having grown up with either of them. I only had a Raggedy Ann doll and the Halloween special, and my mother never explained them to me...
