If you're going to watch this series you need to know the following: It's set in the city of Birmingham in the English Midlands. The accent you think is an Irish one - the one spoken by most of the characters - is a Birmingham accent (they still sound like that). Tommy, Danny, Arthur and co served in the first World War in France, against Germany. They all served as sapoers (military engineers). After the first few months of the war both sides settled into hundreds of miles of opposing trenches. One way of attacking opposing trenches was by the use of tunnels and both sides used sappers to do so. Occasionally tunnels from one side would run into a tunnel from the opposition and vicious hand to hand fighting would occur. Many thousands of troops emerged from the war with PTSD, especially the sappers.
