  • Queen Victoria’s great-grand children, the children of King George V were a fascinating bunch. The two eldest brothers both took their turns on the throne. Edward VIII abdicated amid scandal because he wanted to marry a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson and because he never really wanted to be king anyway. He nearly toppled the British monarchy in the process. His younger brother picked up the pieces and became King George VI. He was a shy man with a stutter but he and his admirable wife, Elizabeth tirelessly boosted moral during WWII and became heroes to their people. Let’s meet them...

For so long, when I was younger, I viewed the relationship between Edward and Wallis Simpson as an epic romance. I thought it was so romantic that he would give up the thrown to be with the woman he loved. Now, I realize that both lovers were people of questionable character. Both Simpson and Edward were supporters of A. Hitler and the practice of eugenics. It actually turned out to be fortuitous that Edward abdicated. Otherwise, Hitler could have had a stronger foothold and influence over western Europe and the UK specifically. What a nightmare.

Have you heard about the recently found letters Wallis wrote to her second husband Ernest? She did not want Edward to abdicate, nor did she wanted a divorce, or a marriage with Edward. She even called Edward's plan, the Peter Pan plan. Her marriage to Edward sounded like prison to be honest. But I do think she loved him, because she did say "He gave up so much, for so little" on his funeral.

Edward VIII's abdication is the reason why Queen Elizabeth II refuses to abdicate and has made Charles and William swear to not abdicate either. She blamed Edward's abdication for the declining of her father's health as it caused him a great amount of stress and turmoil and as we know George VI was a very shy man and had a stammer and needed speech therapy in his later years. While George was a great king and a brilliant steadying presence during the war and stuff he was not a well man. Both Edward and George married very strong women.
It was George’s wife Elizabeth who denied Wallis an HRH. She hated Wallis for destroying her quiet life and blamed her for the death of her husband.
At the beginning of WWII, the Duke of Windsor was given Army duties which both amused and annoyed the professionals. He wasn’t given a lot of info because they doubted his loyalty. At the first sign of trouble Edward fled. He only came back when Churchill threatened to try him for treason and desertion. That was one of the many reasons he was sent to the Bahamas.
After the war and the discovery of the Marburg Papers he was effectively banned from England.

A bit surprised David (Edward VIII) was allowed to carry on his playboy lifestyle with married socialites for so long. In previous royal generations, as a heir to the throne he would have been forced to settle down and marry a suitable foreign protestant princess. German princesses were no longer considered at the end of WW1 but Princess Ingrid of Sweden (later Queen of Denmark) was eligible being a protestant and Princess from a Royal family with a British Princess as her mother (Crown Princess Magaret of Sweden /Princess Margaret of Connaught) . Were they never matched as she and David (Edward VIII) were close in age? I suppose David's parents George V and Mary of Teck already knew their wayward son wouldn't amount to anything and had 3 other princes as spares to the heir.

The fact that King George VI was seen as weak and incapable of being King, and even Republicans said “the abdication crisis of 1936 did "more for republicanism than fifty years of propaganda". George VI wrote to his brother Edward that in the aftermath of the abdication he had reluctantly assumed "a rocking throne" and tried "to make it steady again". He became king at a point when public faith in the monarchy was at a low ebb. During his reign, his people endured the hardships of war, and imperial power was eroded. However, as a dutiful family man and by showing personal courage, he succeeded in restoring the popularity of the monarchy.” Sheesh finally King George VI is getting his credit

I can't believe the Queen actually took advice from her free-wheeling uncle about whether or not to let Margaret marry the man she loved. Assuming that was true, it's as if Uncle David wanted to make the family suffer the way he'd suffered. But most people agree that the abdictation was a blessing. If only George VI hadn't smoked. He might have lived another twenty years or so and the princess Elizabeth would have had a chance to be a normal mother to her children. Though they might have been weird anyway with all that intermarrying. Edward is the only one who can seem to stay out of trouble and of the four, he had the most freedom to be his own person growing up.
