I can't wait for this one! I've wishlisted this when I first saw this!
@@omidiartgaming4102 right on, I can see why!
Can’t wait! I got in on their Kickstarter… so looking forward to some extra perks
@@washathun1166 nice, I'm jealous! I should have gotten in.
Bro are we in the second golden age of old school RPGs? 🤔
God I love this resurgence of these retro themed rpgs. Just beautiful.
It really is!
I hope Mitsuda-san doesn't put himself in the hospital this time, he's too dear lol. Man been waiting on this one since it was a Kickstarter and so excited by how its developed. Absolute amazing time to enjoy retro RPGs.
Haha, right! I suspect the soundtrack's completely done by this point, but who knows. You're right about it being an amazing time for this style!
Had not heard of this game until the direct and it looks very promising! Being able to borrow aspects from beloved games and inject a unique art style is very welcome :) at first glance it reminded me of Golden Sun. Thanks for the video and impressions!
Thank you! I'm impressed with it so far!
I admittedly haven’t played a ton of retro styled RPGs, but this game oozes so much style that it has really peaked my interested regardless. Seeing Sabotage Games’ passion for this niche makes me really appreciate them even more.
August can’t come soon enough!
Totally does! You're right about August too!
It looks really good, devs seem to have done a fantastic job. Fun-fact: Sea of Stars is actually a prequel to The Messenger (2018), an incredibly beautiful platformer that alternates between 8-bit and 16-bit aesthetics, absolutely recommended to all platforming fans.
Doesn't it?
The conversation text boxes need a sound effect. it's weird how it's completely silent, not even a little rumble. I should suggest to the devs
That's a good suggestion. Send it over!
Octopath 2, Sea of Stars, and Persona collection. My God what a time go be alive for RPG's
The perfect year!
Man... I can't wait for this game. They need to make more retro games for us older people that loves these kinds of games. I hope they make this game long enough to enjoy it and don't make it too easy. Enemies and bosses that are too easy makes the game not fun anymore.
I know, it seems so great so far! Definitely one of my most anticipated games.
It's a good time to be a retro jrpg fan.
100% true!
It's awesome to see that everyone only has good things to say about the demo. I'm really looking forward to this game.
Also funny how you didn't spend time on the fishing, but SuperDerek was enthralled by it and seemingly could have spent an hour talking about it in his video. 😄
Haha, those mini games usually just aren’t my thing!
I’m SO stoked for this. Top 5 for this year!
It sure looks like it so far, doesn't it!
I funded this game on Kickstarter. Can't wait to finally try to the full release. Waiting till then to try it. It's a Prequel to The Messenger, which is an amazing game in and of itself. If you haven't played it, you should. The main mechanic is swapping back and forth between 8 and 16 bit game play which represents shifting back and forth in time, and it plays like Ninja Gaiden. If you play on Switch though, Pro-Controller is required or your fingers will HURT.
Yep, the Messenger has that Ninja Gaiden vibe! Glad you like it too!
thank you for alerting me to this game and putting it on my radar!!
My pleasure, hope you like the demo!
First Chained Echoes and now this, hell yes ! I'd also like to reccomend Epic Battle Fantasy 5 to anyone interested in old school rpgs
Thanks for this suggestion! Have you played this demo yet?
Oh I did not know about the demo. Thanks to you - I will try it right away ^^
Hope you enjoy it!
So excited for this game, I’ve had my eye on it since it was first announced! Really glad they decided to release a demo too, I’ve just finished chained echoes so I can’t wait for this!
Great, glad you’ve been tracking it too! Chained Echoes rocks too!
You might like Rise of the Third Power and Ara Fell
Also Crystal Project, Time Break Chronicles, and Skul the Hero Slayer
Thanks for these suggestions!
3:35 "unlike FF8 and Super Mario RPG, special moves take advantage of this timing system too"
In Mario RPG special moves also take advantage of the timing system. You can time the basic jump for extra damage, super and ultra jumps for consecutive jumps, most famously timing the Geno Whirl to do 9999 damage
You’re right, I totally forgot that! Thanks for setting me straight.
@@Xygor lol totally not my intention to "set you straight", we all play a ton of games and if it's not one you played over and over since your childhood then details can be forgotten.
Thanks for the great content!
@@jayroi1814 thanks for watching!
My most anticipated game in a long time. I cannot wait.
Right on, I can see why!
The visual style reminds me of Cross Code.
I need to check that out!
@@Xygor It is an awesome game imo. The puzzles can be a bit stressful, but I love the combat and story.
Its been on the wishlist for years... so glad its gonna release. I'll wait for the full game though, got so much backlog that the demo just isn't worth it.
Fair enough, I can understand waiting for the full thing!
Wating on the demo drop for the other home console plans day 1 buy for me
Right on, it should be more than worth it!
I do like to get this game, but I would like a physical copy, preferably one that you can get at a store and not something like limited run. There are a lot of games out there that I, while I may like it, I often do not get just because there isn't a physical copy of it. The ones by people like limited run I don't consider true physical copies.
I can understand a desire for physical copies for sure!
Game looks and plays perfectly. The only thing is that I found the dialogue a bit too goofy, but it fits the game tone. I guess it's just not my kind of comedy. Which is weird because I found The Messenger to be hilarious.
Thanks for this feedback. Glad you're liking it too!
Wow, this is gorgeous looking
It really is!
I am in the middle of the boss fight and I love the game so far
Isn't it sweet?
Yeah it’s beautiful I can’t wait! I grew up not knowing what JRPGs where then once I met my husband he showed me these beautiful games! I have only beat 4 JRPGs so far but I absolutely love them! The music and stories these games tell are amazing!
Can you transfer your save data from the demo to the full game similar to Dragon Quest 11?
I'm actually not sure about that. I kind of doubt it because it seems like the game doesn't start from the start of the game.
Definitely buying this game , thx for upload review
Thanks for watching. Doesn't it look sweet?
@@Xygor very much so
I thought it was alright. I feel like there needs to be more feedback on when/if you're doing the timed stuff right, that wasn't really clicking for me. And for the love of god please increase walk speed on the world map.
Fair enough! Some of the timing takes getting used to!
Wow I've been out of the loop for awhile. This game is right up my alley. Is this part of the Star Ocean saga. Is it available for the PS4? Thank you.
Right on, check out the demo! The demo is only for Switch right now though.
I like the world design, it definitely have a CT vibe, my only worry is as with any rpg is the story, the characters design feel a bit generic without knowing the story.
Yes, total CT vibe! I think there will be more to characters and they’re hiding it for the demo. I guess we’ll see!
Lunar x Chrono Trigger x Golden Sun that's I see
I can see it!
A truly beautiful retro style RPG, unlike all that cheap HD2D crap.
It looks great, doesn’t it?
I cannot wait for this game!!
You and mw both!
i played the demo and loved it
Isn't it awesome?
@@Xygor very much so, reminds me alot like you said, a mix of chrono and mario rpg when it comes to the battle system, i cant wait to see what the story is about
chrono trigger spirit!
Very much so. Oozing from this game.
when you equip new weapons, do they look different on your sprite? Oddly enough.. that's very important to me. It's why I haven't bought Chained Echoes. Look at it this way.. if Final Fantasy 1 for NES could do it... would it be so difficult in 2023?
Not that I'm aware, but I'm actually not sure.
The attack breaking make me think of the Grandia series & Child of Light.
Good comparison!
@@Xygor gad thought of it earlier, but forgot it before I typed ut, but in terms of breaking defenses rather than attacks Xenosaga 2 as well.
Love your videos bro
Thanks, glad you do! Have you played this demo yet?
The inclusion of elevation makes me think of Alundra, Super Mario RPG, & the Mario & Luigi series.
True, Alundra especially!
@@Xygor some people yesterday were suggesting Alundra to Rage Box to stream on his Playstation Saturdays. So it is very fresh in mind for me due to that.
Count me in 100%
Right on, welcome to the club!
Sea Of Stars ... Star Ocean 🤔
Yeah, similar name!
star ocean?
Nope, but the name is similar, isn't it?
Sea of stars......almost like some sort of.....Star......Ocean
Yeah, similar name!
Honestly I must be in the minority but I was severely underwhelmed with the demo.
The game is awful at explaining everything. Sticking everything, and I mean pretty much everything in the “HOW TO PLAY” section of the pause menu with pretty much no actual tutorial is lazy and not a great way to communicate info to the player.
I also had like zero understanding of what the heck is going on story wise when the demo starts you in the middle of the story with no context, let’s you play for 5 minutes, then jumps forward again, and then you pick up from there. It felt really messy and the fact they had to redact a line for spoilers makes me wonder why that slice was part of the demo in the first place.
The fishing controls were also awful. Plus they don’t even show you the tutorial until you reach the SECOND fishing area so if you try to fish in the first area it makes little sense. And then the tutorial they DO show provides more information than what’s in the How To Play tab but there’s no way that I knew of to revisit that lol.
The game is also just terrible about giving feedback to the player in general. With so many timing based mechanics having a better way to know if I’m doing something too early or too late would have been nice because the way it is it feels inconsistent due to how fast things happen and how little feedback you get between what’s “right” and “wrong”
All of these issues seem like design and implementation issues, not budget issues, so I’m a bit uneasy that the game will improve for me in 6 months.
The music is great, the visuals are great, but everything else has me feeling uncertain
Fair enough. It's a little short and you don't get to see much, and yeah, I guess there isn't much of any tutorial to speak of. Some other recent demos like Wandering Sword handled that part better.
Oh, and I think they're intentionally concealing the story so as not to ruin it for the final release.
@@Xygor yeah it’s understandable but I have to say I really enjoyed the Octopath Traveler 2 demo so I’m curious what your thoughts are on that.
@@lipsontajgordongrunk4328 I have been playing and loving it too. I probably won't put anything out until my review since the full game comes out though since it's so soon. I will release it shortly after that.
Is it truly a possible a game in 2023 lives up to the hype of chrono trigger and the FF series?
*Chained Echoes, sitting in the corner*
Am I a fucking joke to you?
I reviewed it and liked it a lot
@@Xygor I know, its why I followed your channel.
I was trying to be funny.
@@WizWiteKnight great, thank you!
Too much purple
Yeah, the demo has a lot, but it’s really that one area. It seems like the game itself is way more diverse.
The game is absolutely gorgeous. The only part I’m not a fan of is the character portraits. They look “cheap” in comparison to the other graphics.
Right on! I didn't really think of that but I appreciate your take.
5:56 wall climbing. I saw that on Terranigma on retrogames. A lot of references to a lot of jRPGs also. That's awesome newd.
Lots of awesome stuff!
This game is the first new release I've played in like 20 years that has that old school JRPG vibe. I thought I had seen it in octopath traveler and such, but no.
It's a very distinct feeling that I had forgot. I don't allow myself to be hyped for video games anymore, but I am making an exception for this.
It's odd, gaming industry hasn't really been around for very long, so we haven't seen it happen yet, but I love music, and there's this pattern with music where it's like, a ~20-30 years cycle or so where the old becomes new again, and we're at the part in the gaming industry where there's a thirst for the old, and more niche creators are starting to cater to it. I'm all for it, ngl. :D
Thanks for your thoughts on it - looks like it has so many awesome qualities! I'm in the same camp as you are when it comes to most games.
first to correct a misleading idea. this is not an nintendo switch exclusive.
it is also going to be on PS4,PS5 and PC.
i'm not sure about this game, since the story and characters are what appeal to me. and it looks like another battle focused grind. combat would probably be fun at first then it would reach a point where i just want to skip it for whatever narrative and minigames it has.
for me the Roleplay is as if not more important than the battles.
have you tried
CrossCode
ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game
Hyperdimension Neptunia (series of games)
2 days left! So hyped for this. Their first game was amazing.
i played the demo and for me the style look like a mix a puzzle from Wild arms/suikoden, i was extremely impress by the demo. my hype was already really high for the game. but after playing the demo. i'm even more hype. i had so much fun on the demo, for how short it was. and the boss animation/way of fighting was really chrono trigger vibe there.
it been so long since i seen Pixel art animation this great ( i know that chaine echos have great animation for pixel art but since both game was in production, they cant really copie each other) both game has extremely high polish Pixel animation.
and the music. if they release a OST i will totally buy it. 100% pre-order it and playing day 1 expect if im working on that xD of course xD
Right on, glad you liked it too! The music is so good like you said! So many great aspects to it.
Sea of Stars, Eiyuden Chronicles... brothers, we're eating good!
Agreed!
Great review! How would you compare this game to Chained Echos?
They're comparable in a lot of ways, I think this one has a little more promise than Chained Echoes but I really like them both.
I personally just hope has a more conventional leveling system unlike Chained Echoes which was like Chrono Cross
@@djutmose it does, though the whole party levels up at the same time.
"Switch"?
The screen is too small. Why no iPadOS version? Or Steam (Windows) or MacOS versions?
There will be full versions, just no demo
Two things, art style is cross code. Also special attacks do have timed hits in smrpg.
That’s true, can’t believe that slipped my mind!
Looking forward to it...thanks for the content Xygor!
Thanks sir!
The demo was fantastic, I can’t wait for the game to come out
Same, glad you liked it too!
I am so excited for Sea of Stars! It looks great!
Doesn't it though?
I don't believe any retro-styled game can be "the next Chrono Trigger".
The reason is simply the retro aesthetic itself.
Chrono Trigger was a AAA "dream team" of developers pushing the technology and storytelling methods available to them at the time, having to find creative ways for that technology to properly convey the story they want to tell, resulting in a lot of innovation.
A retro-styled game is intentionally limiting itself and attempting to replicate what has come before and though it may result in something great, it will never be as memorable, influential or widely beloved as the classic games they honor.
So they at least brought a release date? A nostalgic trip, thoose are my favorite type of games. Bring it on
Yep, have to wait until August but it's pretty sweet, isn't it?
@@Xygor aye, It most certainly is. Already seem to be more drawn in to me then Chained Echoes, a game I did nto dare to play because the controls and story looked to complicated for me.
As I guy that nevercould play chrono trigger though, I want to try to this game out and see if I can manage. Just hope its not too complicated.
Either way it is the sweetest ice cream right now, and it unlike many has a release date. We can wait.
@@AngryAnimeFan2 thanks for leaving your thoughts. I liked Chained Echoes a lot! It's worth playing too.
Wow a game about a Star Ocean?
Not quite but similar name!
This is beautiful. 😢 😹
Doesn’t it look great?
One of my favourite games on the DS is called Magical Star Sign which went unnoticed
But it’s a beautiful little turn based rpg and that game also uses timed touch screen mechanics that increase your damage on all attacks and also to decrease incoming damage
It’s definitely worth looking at if you haven’t played it already!
Thanks for the suggestion!
@@Xygor
You are most welcome
The game will come off as a little childish which is probably one reason it wasn’t liked
But the game has a deep story (as far as I’m concerned) and you’ll also see another mechanic I haven’t mentioned but you’ll see that it was inspired by chrono cross
Have fun!
2023 is the time to be alive for gamers:
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Octopath II
- Sea of Stars
- Tears of the Kingdom
- Silksong (GIMME THIS GAME)
- And others recommended
Yes, and Eiyuden Chronicle!
@@Xygor Btw, im new to JRPG's (turn-based) and Persona 5 was my introduction to this genre because of how phenomenal the game was
@@thundageon5962 fantastic, glad you found your way to it through a newer RPG!
@@Xygor So then after that Octopath Traveler, and it was hard as shit
@@thundageon5962 make sure to play II!

This looks like it'll be top tier when it comes out. I don't go for demos myself, but until it comes out, I have Chained Echoes and a few others I can play to hold me over.
Sure looks like top tier so far!
6 playable characters and 5 total with you and cargo is for extras in story related missions. Can’t wait for this! So glad I backed this game!
Great, glad you onboard too! It's going to be awesome.

@@tripham1982 unfortunately!
@@Xygor playing the demo right now. Pretty awesome so far
@@tripham1982 Yes it is!
I'm just going to wait for the full release. Sucks that it's still 6 months away, but it's not like there's not plenty to play for the time being. Shaping up to look like it might be one of my favorite RPGs in decades.
Fair enough to wait if that's how you want to roll. I couldn't help myself, haha!
