Investigating my family tree over the years I found that my 10x great grandfather was a loyalist and close friend and advisor to King Charles I. He owned a large estate in Westmoreland in North-West England. Thomas Fairfax stripped him of his land and confiscated his estate in 1644. Interestingly another ancestor from another side, my 7x great grandfather was a friend to King Louis 16th of France. He was beheaded in 1791 during the french revolution. It was nice to know at some point in the past our family was wealthy, because we haven't seen any of it since :P
You need to understand that Stephen Fry was playing King Charles the First from the Stuart era, but he was doing a pretty good impression of our current day Prince Charles who is alive today.
The poppy is used to rememmber the war because after the war the battleground became poppy fields, so in the show they showed poppys to also show the audience what that hellzone looks ike today
Stephen Fry's impression was of the current Prince Charles, who has his own charity 'The Princes Trust' and thats sort of the way he acts when nhe visits the works the charity does. So yeah, the impression is of one of King Charles's descendants, the current Prince of Wales, Charles.
Prince Charles isn't a descendant of Charles the First, but he is a descendant of his sister Elizabeth Stuart and by virtue of that their father James the First.
@@CoffeeConnected So he is a descendant then, but an indirect one. I was always curious about the difference between a 'descendant' and a 'direct descendant', so I looked it up! 🙂
It warms my heart that you are doing this one, Josh! I suppose you’re gonna do Blackadder’s Christmas Carol too? 😀 If I should get your attention, I would be loath not to tip you off about Monty Pythoners Michael Palin and Terry Jones’ ex-Python project (as Fawlty Towers was John Cleese’s), namely the series Ripping Yarns. Madcap and clever takes on British society in the early 20th century. They can be found on this platform. I hope you check out episodes «Tomkinson’s Schooldays» and «Roger of The Raj», which incidentally features an actress you think highly of, namely Joan Sanderson from Fawlty Towers «Communication Problems» episode. LOVE your channel! Greetings from Norway!
I thought it was great that, for what it was. Been a long while since I’ve seen it. Makes you think about all the possible time periods they could have delved into for a full series.
They also oddly enough had to do that ending on the fly, because the explosions were so intense that the actress basically flubbed the how the scene was supposed to end, and they didn’t have the budget in time to re-up to shoot a new one, and the actors refused to try to do a retake of how it was originally supposed to end because they couldn’t handle the explosions. They were too scared.
I love the first series, it's very different but I still love it, to be honest there isnt really anything involved with this show which isnt just great in my opinion.
@@TheDneaves Ah, never thought of that ... hmmm. It's interesting, though - what do you think is the distinction between civil war and dynastic conflict?
Stephen fry was doing a prince Charles impressantion, prince Charles is the Duke of Edinburgh and his dad Philip has a Duke of Edinburgh award scheme which helps young people learn skills, job skills ,make friends, have fun ,that's why he was talking about helping the young and back then the person being executed would tip the executioner to make sure he did a quick painless job with one fail swoop of his ake.english civil war was a very bloody period, when I went to school they took us to some of the battlefields were you can see mounds of earth as they had to burry the dead in large pits ,we went to a church near by were Skelingtons were found behind a walls .

King Charles I is often described as an idiot and in some ways he was. In reality he was a king in the wrong time. At this point in history England was not ruled by an absolute king but a king that had to listen to and take advice from parliament. Charles felt he had the divine right to rule so there were years of growing tensions. There were actually two civil wars in quick succession. The first one was won by parliament but they wanted to keep the king with reduced power. Charles agreed to this then he betrayed them and brought a foreign catholic army into England to try and beat parliament. He lost. So he was put on trial for treason and executed. Cromwell is an even more confusing figure. He hated catholics and did some pretty awful things to the Irish even by English-Irish historical relation standards. But he also opened England up to the Jews after they had been kicked out centuries earlier by the king of the time. Interesting fact for Americans is that the failure of the Commonwealth (sometimes also referred to as the English Republic) was because all branches and power of government were held by parliament which led to corruption and them eventually being overthrown by Cromwell. The founding fathers knew this failure and counteracted it in the Constitution by separating legislative, judicial and executive powers. All of this is a very very simple summary of a very very complicated time in English history and I’ve ignored all sorts of bits.
Yes Stephen Fry was doing a very convincing Prince Charles impression who’s known for putting his foot in it and being generally cringeworthy. 👍
LOL thanks for sharing bud.
Stephen Fry doing a Prince Charles impression lol
The joke here is that Charles is talking like Prince Charles talks.
Looking forward to seeing you react to Blackadder's Christmas Carol, It's my favorite of the Blackadder specials.
Stephen Fry’s King Charles was a Prince Charles impression.
The real King Charles was pretty disconnected as well.
Stephen fry is doing a prince charles impression. Check some interviews of him.
The Alan partridge of royalty 😆😆😆
Thanks bud I will look into it.
Baldricks “over here I have one that I prepared earlier” is from the old British children’s program Play School & was a generally known reference

Blackadder's Christmas Carol is a favourite of mine. Features an appearance by Nicola Bryant of Doctor Who fame. 🙂
Unfortunately some versions cut my favourite joke :-)
Awesome!
Loved Stephen Fry's Prince Charles impression.
Baldrick’s catchphrase: “I have a cunning plan.”
You should do this first series.
season 1 please. plus the " Christmas Carol" special.

And who may well be king Charles the third, if he chooses Charles. Could end up being Henry the ninth or something else though...

I really enjoy this special. I found out Harry Enfield was the narrator at the beginning of this. I'm a big fan of him too!
Bit of a history lesson there too as well as very funny 🙂✌
this is the first time i've seen this for comic relief or something .
nice one josh! great for a short special!! "CHRISTMAS CAROL" for reaction. ; )
Josh the first series is worth watching maybe not as good as the others but is worth watching.a similar scene also in that series.
I agree. It is poor when compared to the other 3 seasons, but in isolation it is still a good series.

How have I not even seen this in the UK before?
The King is a once off character for the special, I thought he was hilariously stupid :D

Umm ... could you please elaborate? Do you mean the Stephen of Blois thing? Just curious ...
