Wahoo Kickr LONG term review - will it outlast 10,000 miles of Ironman training?

  • The Wahoo Kickr smart trainer is the perfect bike smart trainer... or is it?
I have biked over 10,000 miles on the Kickr exploring Zwift's Watopia.
Is any version of the Kickr worth buying?
If you have a Kickr already, does the current model justify upgrading from the one you have already?

My Kickr is the original version. It has worked flawlessly for 7 years and more than 10,500 miles. I am more than happy with it but I do hear of other people having problems with the drive belt, with excessive noise and with some of the built in sensors. What is your experience? Interested to know if the build quality of the first generation has been retained, or even improved, in the versions since mine.
Wahoo is now up to version 6 of the Kickr and now Version 2 of the Kickr Bike.

Great video. I also have the original Kickr. I bought it cheaply because the freewheel was not spinning properly and changing gears was inaccurate. There is a spacer that gets squeezed and stuck on the axle after years of heavy use. I contacted Wahoo and they said they are not giving support to the original Kickr anymore, nevertheless, they sent me a leftover spacer for $25. I took the replacement ring and I had it professionally replicated, the guy who provided the service charged me for a minimum order of 20 pieces. Now I have too many (in case you need one). After the fix, I have been racing on the kikr every day for the past 2 years with no issues, I switched recently to the power meter on my bike because the Kikr has a small lag I wanted to improve. I love it so far and I also believe the new version does not offer enough to make it up for the switch.

Generally Wahoo supports their products, sounds like they helped you

@@ThisIsJulianC definitely helped me but clearly stated the original kickr was not supported. I don't know if you can get the part from them anymore. Like I did

I have the exact same Kickr, purchased in 2017. My experience has been the same as yours. Absolutely no issues....yet!
I have considered changing the belt and bearings, just because, but then I stop myself and will continue to wait it out. I think I have almost, but not quite, the same number of miles on it as you. Very well built product. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks for sharing - I have been tempted to perform some servicing on it but always decide to leave it as is because it is running perfectly. I hear from Redditors insisting that it is impossible to run a Kickr for so long without any maintenance, but here I am and I am reassured that you have the same experience. (As of today Kickr is at 11,787 miles)

I admit I enjoy riding indoors more than outdoors. No animals, cars, etc, to contend with or set up (I live in a condo and have a lot to do to bring them in, clean, and out of the condo building). Indoor cycling reminds me of when I bought a convertible. As a lifelong motorcyclist, many times the convertible was more appealing than gearing up for riding the arguably less safe option. The same applies to indoor v outdoor cycling, for me.

Curious - do you ride Zwift? Do you watch TV while riding? I’m with you on the reasons for indoor cycling, I get out when I can but still cycle indoors more often.

I cracked two ribs when sprinting on my Kickr and tipping sideways. Fell onto a large paint can. Doh! Had 2 kickrs but now have a Wattbike as I was sick of changing bikes around.

Ouch! I would find it a serious pain to have to put the bike on and off the trainer on a regular basis so I get why you did that. I looked at the Kickr Bike (Gen 1) and passed on it, didn’t look at the Wattbike too much but I hear good things about it

have you never had to change out your belt after all that 10K mileage?

    • @ThisIsJulianC
      @ThisIsJulianC  5 місяців тому +1

Correct, I have not needed to replace or repair anything on it. Keep it clean and dust free... thats it.

My kickr 5 is now on 7800 miles and i have had no problems with this one.
The first one i bought, just after it’s release had a problem out of the box, but i got a full refund and i waited until the production issue was fully resolved.
I think the Kickr’s are reliable now.

When mine eventually fails I'll definitely get another one, super reliable and very pleased with it.
