Glory Hunter FM23 | UCL SEMI FINAL VS LIVERPOOL | Episode 31 | Football Manager 2023
That first goal going in so early, after all that tactical talk, is why I love this man and this series
Classic benjy 😂
I laughed so hard when that first goal went in.
Love your videos Ben, but you really need to sit down and read what the tactical instructions actually do. You told the FBs to sit narrower and explained it as a defensive change, but the instruction clearly says "when team is in possession". You also have the team playing direct passing but with a low tempo - surely that's an oxymoron? I know FM "expertise" or whatever isn't the point of your videos, but it can be a bit frustrating when you're narrating things you want the team to do but enabling/disabling instructions that do the exact opposite or isn't related to what you're saying at all.
Again, love your videos, so please don't take this as an insult. Just something that has frustrated me a bit and I assume I'm not the only one.
My thoughts: The two DMs you tried later on would have been a good idea. It seems to work well against IFs this year. But I don't get why you chose to trap inside when that is where their forwards want to play? You want to crowd out the centre and then push them outside to limit their time and touches in dangerous areas. If you had gone with the two DMs for example and then trapped outside and lowered the directness, you'd have so much more possession, way fewer turnovers and it is much harder for them to break through your centre of the pitch. Also by telling your FBs to sit narrow in possession when you have IFs, you're robbing yourself of width. Especially when you tell your players to focus play down the wings.
If Liverpool are playing IF and therefore trying to force the ball inside, would it not have been better to "Trap Outside" instead of "Trap Inside". The description for "Trap Inside" said it funnels the play into the middle a bit like Defend Wider used to do and surely this is exactly what Liverpool with IFs would want. Would it not be better to force them wide?
Yeah, the "Trap Inside" tactic only really affects the opposition front line, so the logic of shutting down Trent's crossing by forcing inside is irrelevant when facing two inverted wingers/inside forwards. By forcing them inside when they're cut-in playmakers and attackers, Ben was just making their lives easier. "Trap Outside" pushes them out, as would showing them onto their weaker foot in the individual opposition instructions. That would also be where I'd start if I were in that position where one is traditional and the other is inverted as well, just set the individual opposition instruction to force them where they don't want to be. The change in terminology without any real change to how it functions might've caught Ben out on this one.
If he wanted to shut down Trent, he might've been better off man-marking him with a hard-working winger and sacrificing the attacking quality down that side, or playing a higher tempo counter strategy that takes advantage of Trent often being too far forward. Accept he's going to get forward and use that, like Napoli did earlier this season.
Trapping two inside forwards inside, truly a genius move, not at all playing directly into their hands.
Trap Inside funnels the players inside, which is what IFs want. You should be trapping outside. Need to read those instructions. Or rewatch all Zealand's videos
Those full backs are stealing a living, getting roasted every game.
Gotta leave Newcastle now - sunk cost fallacy thinking it will get better.
Watching you pretend to know what you're doing is hilarious 😅😅
😂😂😂😂😂
why is your teams Morale so bad!?
Even Cristian Stellini could do a better job than this
You need to use opposition instructions more. Man marking Diaz and Elliot would have helped more with this tactic today
God. As a spurs fan watching a Newcastle save is particularly painful right now
Ben done a guardiola by overthinking it! At home.. get at them
Can you please set your unfit players to play for under 21’s?? It’s a few clicks come on
You must be new around here.
@@JoeyKneecap I'm actually not but I've kept my annoyance under wraps for some time lol
@@SamHartles Fair, haha.
This kills me. It's bloody automatic 🤦♂️
What is the tactical reason for slow and direct play? Seems counter intuitive, especially with the high quality level players you got..
I would go short/high tempo
I just think that this has became a total Newcastle save and it is hars to justify staying with them with so mucb left on the table for the series
I see your problem here, not enough actual Newcastle players in the first team.
You know the games lost as soon as Benjy starts talking about tactics and not just playing obscure 80s tunes on a harmonica instead of making subs. 😂😂 Love this man
If they’re using inside forward or inverted wingers, wouldn’t you want to force them outside when defending? rather than force them inside which is exactly what they want to do??
Is there a reason for not using a playmaker at all (honest question)?
I don't know if you'll see this Ben but my advice for the next game;
Rice (Anchor)
Bruno (DLP)
Bellingham/MacAllister (CM At)
Mudryk (IF)
ASM (IF)
Dybala (SS)
Force them outside, as you said, you fancy Pau against Tammy in the air
Increase tempo
Counter Press
Counter when you get the ball back
Pass into space
Play for Set pieces
Lastly, pray, because 3-0 against that kind of Liverpool team is going to be a tough tough ask xD
In real life you would have been sacked so badly xD
Great video.
I would try playing a DLP at the base of the midfield - try to dominate possession. Maybe McAllister.
Play wing backs. Get up the park.
But...each to their own.
Must admit, I never look at those detailed defensive instructions. 😂😂😂
You have to leave at end of the season
You have players who are too good to be playing direct football
Baku was getting cooked all game
Hello Benjy, I wanted to send a message and figured this was the best way. I wanted to ask a few questions to hopefully help you out of the mini rut, as sometimes it's easier when you're asked qs instead of overwhelmed by your thoughts.
1) What type of save do you like best on FM? What do you actually want to play? It's clear Newcastle and the glory hunter vibe isn't something you're motivated for, which is fine, it happens. Lower league? Wrexham? I think you work best with underdog teams rising up instead of trying to win everything with everyone. But if I asked 'what type of team do you want to manage?', what's the first thing that comes into your head?
2) If, like me, your answer is 'nothing tbh, FM this year just isn't doing it for me' then what do you like to play? There's a new Zelda on Switch coming out which I'm super excited for. I also am going to play Red Dead 2 as I haven't played it ever. I'm also pretty addicted to Overwatch currently.
Basically, the point of my questions is to allude that you can do anything you want and you'll have a fanbase of 100k+ subs here to support you, whatever you decide. Forget about analytics or the viewers, the best content is content you want to make and that you're motivated to create. I think FM sucks this year, I'm not forcing it anymore and you shouldn't have to either. But just a lets play of any game would be fun. Stream highlights. Vlogs. Whatever gets you excited. Treat this as an opportunity to branch out however you want, turn it into a positive. Any content is better than no content or half-arsed content. You're a human at the end of the day and everyone is subbed for you, not because you're an FM god (lol definitely not.) So if you say 'hey, I tried FM, it isn't fun for me right now' then people will support you. But I urge you to go back to chasing your passions rather than thinking about the product. Do what you love and what you want to do and the quality will be inherent. Best of luck brother
Imagine starting the episode as getting tactical to play in to Liverpools hands, trapping the two IFs inside, where they want to be, the clue is literally in the name of their role. Then asking for play down the sides, but wanting the full-backs to play narrower, meaning the wingers have to do it all themselves with next-to-no support, ouch.
Ben, I really don't want to be 'that' person that picks fault with your management but I noticed at 16:54 of this video that you only have half of your allowed coaches & medical team. Filling those empty slots with suitable appointments would really help your team improve & would also help player fitness & match recovery. I know you know all this so its a bit off you haven't done it. Also sat watching this vid while shouting 'trap outside, not in' seems to be a common occurrence. I have been watching for about 8 years & am also a patreon of your channel & I'm starting to think that you don't give quite as much love & attention to your UA-cam series'. Really hope I'm wrong & please don't take this as an insult more an observation from a long time fan.
RIP Glory Hunter. It’s defo gonna be silly GTA videos until FM24.
Yeah bro
@@DoctorBenjyFM tbh, I genuinely doubt you’ll even make FM24 videos. I hope the game changes to make it more engaging for you, but I fear FM24=FM23=FM22 etc… interesting to see if this channel exists this time next year
Oh dear. A little while ago he said the series wasn't dead. That hasn't aged well clearly. One glory hunter was moved to twitch now this one has died after 1 club.
At least he'll be gone from Newcastle soon. Looking forward to the next part of the story :)
Great video as per usual! Ever thought about changing mentality? Positive against a better side is a disaster waiting to happen...
Baku is easily your weak link in this team
Go to Arsenal if Arteta is sacked?
There's no point of being tactical if your squad formation is crap Ben, I normally love your videos but you persist in making the same errors time and time again, that formation is horrible, 4-1-2-2-1 will never produce the results you need, the team is unbalanced, there is a massive hole in your attacking midfield and Dybala will never be a winger not to mention the fact that mitrovic by himself against the bigger teams is useless, why not a 4-2-3-1?
I think it isthe player roles and team instructions he gets wrong, more so than the formation. I agree he should have a 4-2-3-1 formation, as well as this one. But for example, the first goal he mentioned Bellingham not running to the player, when he is a BWM on defend which I think holds position, needed to be on support duty.
Liverpool played with the same formation as he played with, so I don't think the problem is necessarily the formation.
@@aukeeeh2809 yes they did and thats exactly why Ben shouldn have played with the exact same formation as Liverpool has a much better team him, I would have gone with a 4-2-3-1 against them and I assure you he wouldnt have lost 7-0 and 4-1
Tbh I think your tactical thought process was very sound especially at home. Morale is just too important on FM and your boys are lacking it from recent form. Unlucky, excited for where the journey goes now!
alright, I'm gonna say it - watching Bellingham so far in your save - being out for the season might not be bad. He's made a lot of mistakes from what I've seen.
I enjoyed the tactical aspects of the video, and it was interesting to see the thought process. There was sound logic in all of the decisions.
Tactics seemed logical. Liverpool are just a good team
