Thank you for sticking with this game. Would you ever consider reactions to the TV show even though it's non-gaming? It's also got a lot of new stuff story-wise and it's very reaction worthy.
Almost definitely a way bigger headache for UA-cam/copyright/fair use stuff... but I'm still gonna throw the idea/request out there.

I always interpreted Ellies rage as her being mad at herself. For waiting so long to forgive Joel. And the day after she said she'd like to try, he dies. So heartbreaking.

    • @xOogieBoogie3x
      @xOogieBoogie3x 8 місяців тому +293

Self loathing is what both Ellie and Abby both suffer from. Ellie for not being able to forgive Joel, and Abby for realizing that she basically ruined all of her relationships while also getting no closure from killing Joel. Ultimately the game is about forgiveness in the end.

    • @clarkmichaels822
      @clarkmichaels822 8 місяців тому +107

Yeah Ellie is mad at herself. You can look at Abby as a force of nature: no matter what Ellie's relationship with Joel would have been, Abby was going to come and kill him. It could also have been a heart attack or a Clicker. The point is that Ellie wasted the time she had left with Joel being mad at him. She couldn't control what Abby did, but she did control was she did. To realize that hurt too much so she went after Abby and only in the end is she able to accept it.

To me, I understood immediately what was going on with Tommy's behavior.
Tommy went through a lot on this journey as well. Loosing his brother for one, but seeing the brutality in Seattle loosing Jesse to Abby. Dina and Ellie beaten within an inch of their lives. But I think the Shot to his head (and leg) that basically crippled him. He was a sniper and a valuable member of the community and now he's lost everything. He's useless and a burden. Head injuries can also cause severe anger and depression issues. He probably came home, bitter, angry, crippled. Maybe drinking a lot. And then, the last thing he has left, his wife Maria leaves him. So he channels all his energy, his anger into this obsession. Getting Abby. He's not the Tommy level headed we knew before. He's a broken man.

And in the end he becomes something most of us don't want to see him. Broken, bitter, petty and limping. I think a lot of people hate this game simply because they just can't handle a tragic story that doesn't have a happy ending

There's also tons of times where the characters are like a second away from being shot or stabbed before something gets in the way of that. This works fine in Uncharted, because the games are a bit less grounded in their action, but it doesn't translate as well to TLOU.

1:54:52 that hit hard for me personally. For years I was mad at my dad for something that "ruined" our family. Then when I was finally ready to rekindle our relationship, he died not even a month later. It was before Christmas and I called him, he was shocked I even called him because I wanted nothing to do with him. I asked him to take me shopping for my mom's present and I could hear how happy he was that I wanted to go somewhere with him. We were only out for 45 minutes but it meant so much to him. A couple days later he was hospitalized, then a couple weeks later he passed all alone (hospital was giving us a hard time about going to see him because of Covid) in a hospital bed without knowing I wanted to apologize for it all. While we were at the mall shopping for my mom, he pointed out this watch he really liked, so a few days later I went with my mom, and we bought it. I still have it, same Christmas wrapping paper, to dad, from me written on it from 2021.

Got to leave this here bro... You've got to be my favorite creator now. You pour your personality in every reaction, in every connection with every character, without following the usual profile or pattern of most creators, which consists in similar opinions or behaviors towards the game. They're all kinda predictable and afraid of sharing their emotions as truthful as you do. You're not afraid to cry, you're not afraid to untangle you thoughts and understand your emotions; you're not afraid to laugh; you read the characters with a kind heart and bond to them through their best characteristics.
At the end of the video, you said you're just a goofball, that you love to make people laugh. But you're in fact VERY human, and you make people laugh and love it precisely because of that. Usually, the kindest hearts tend to approach comedy on a special way, and feel truly accomplished when seeing and making other people happy. That's why you're getting so much support, people crave humanity and empathy. Don't EVER lose that bro. Hope you see this, cheers from Brazil!

Those two flashbacks hit so hard for completely different reasons. The first one at the dance breaks your heart, because it makes you think Ellie pushing Joel away after trying to help was the last time she ever saw him. And you think the whole reason she goes after Ellie is because of the guilt she feels. But then you see the next flashback on Joel's porch, where Ellie tells him she'll try to forgive him. And you realize it was a different kind of guilt. Ellie realized that she had wasted so much time being angry at Joel, and literally the day after she decided to patch things up, Joel was taken from her. And all of Ellie's rage, self-destruction, and suffering instantly makes more sense. What an incredible game.

Also, as I commented separately, you see why her thinking about it brought her peace too. Because there's no such thing as wasting time with a passed loved one cause there's no such thing as enough time. She didn't forgive him, but in that moment she reassured him. And Joel died knowing after everything his daughter still loved him. He was okay. And realising that she can be too.

@@romilrh again, they had been torturing Joel for a while. He was very aware that they didn't hurt Tommy. I'm not saying 100% he knew she was fine, but I think it's far fetched to say 100% he thought she was next. Cause clearly Joel knew he was targeted cause they didn't actually hurt Tommy they just knocked him out, and they only reacted to his name. If they wanted to kill Tommy they would have done it before they killed Joel. But they purposely knocked him out and left him there. Remember we go from seeing Joel get pinned to the next time we see him he's near death's door, but he was there a WHILE. A long while to leave Tommy alive if they wanted to hurt him. And they also could have just shot Ellie when she came in (like Abby shot Jessie) but they didn't. He would have obviously seen that.
And when I say Joel was okay, I meant with his relationship with Ellie. She didn't ruin anything. He wasn't upset with her, he didn't feel like they wasted any time. That was okay. He's dead. OBVIOUSLY I don't mean he was PHYSICALLY okay. But he died on good terms with Ellie, but Ellie didn't think it was good enough until the end of the game.

My father passed away in December 2019, and my mother passed three weeks later in January. When this game came out several months later, it had an unexpected effect on me: it helped me process the grief I was feeling (or more correctly, that I was bottling up, because along with my sisters I was still dealing with their estate, and other practical matters).
TLOU2 makes you feel emotions that just aren't associated with entertainment media like video games. And now with the passage of years, I empathize somewhat with those that bounced off of it, because some people just aren't prepared or willing to go down that road, and that's ok (I still, of course, have no patience for those who hate the game out of bigotry, which is a small but very vocal faction, I'm afraid). It's not pleasant, but this game is a gift: it allows one to encounter some uncomfortable truths about society and the human heart in a safe way: through a story well told.
This video is my first exposure to your playthrough, but I'm so impressed with, well frankly the maturity, open mind and heart you brought to the story, that I'm subscribing so I can go back and watch earlier parts. Thank you for this!

After Ellie found them at the pillars, Abby carried Lev just like Joel carried Ellie. I wanted to feel that kind of relationship again. Abby had something to fight for while Ellie had nothing to lose. She lost herself.

Jettro, I've watched maybe half a dozen full playthroughs of this game, and yours was the one I connected with the most. You were emotional mature and intelligent throughout. 4 years ago, I saw the leaks for this game and fell for the outrage, and I ended up hating the game until just recently when I decided to watch a playthrough. Yours, though, was incredibly well edited, funny as all hell, and pure-hearted. I even realized a few more things about the story through you talking about your thoughts and feelings (and I know this story front to back, now). Thank you for sharing your experience with this very emotionally difficult game, and all your hard work editing.

In the end, I like that Ellie doesn't know because I don't think it would've mattered. Nora implied that they were after Joel because of what he did at the hospital. Ellie agrees that what Joel did was wrong, Ellie knows what he did is egregious and in her eyes it's the worst thing he's done, but she still won't relent. She's hellbent on revenge anyway. Because in the end it didn't matter to Ellie *why* Abby did what she did. It was just the fact that she did it.

I played this game on release day. 7 long years of waiting. Pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition 6 months prior.
Summer vacation, 2020. This day is engraved in my memory like no other. Mid-pandemic. Hadn’t seen my friends for 3 months. The release day was the first day I was ever with them again. Me and the boys promised each other we would be there, no matter what. We, as a group of proud nerds, were from 7AM to 10AM in front of MediaMarkt, just to get the game.
I went home, unboxed the goodies, prepared lunch and sat down. Blinds fully closed. Headset on, max volume, locked in. From 2PM to 7AM I got up from my seat twice - once to get dinner, once to go to the bathroom.
That night, I remember not being able to fall asleep because of anxiety. I ended up waking up at 1PM, after getting some rest. I heat up my lunch, and sit down for another 9 hours. The last few were especially long.
    I remember finishing the game,
screaming at Ellie to stop. I couldn’t take it anymore.
I was in pure shock. Complete disbelief. I had *NEVER* felt such pain and numbness in my entire life.
I sat in my bed, back against the wall, knees up, crying my eyes out for 2h30. I had no more tears left, but I couldn’t stop sobbing.
My emotional state was in a whole time low. I had never felt this broken beyond repair in my entire life.
This game, and series, really, has taught me a lot. 10 long and warm years. I won’t ever be the same after experiencing this.
I was really sad with the mixed reception the game got in the beginning, but as time passes, I see more and more people loving this story. Even people who hated it to begin with. It truly inspired me to be a better version of myself.
I’m really glad to have found your channel and that I was able to take this ride with you.
This is a deeply personal story, one I never really told anyone, but I felt that I knew what you were going through. It felt real.
Thank you so much for this, really.

I think Jettro is one of the best examples of how someone was intended to experience the story. He started with wanting revenge, to the complete opposite, and that 180 happened at the PERFECT time (After Seattle, before Santa Barbara). Santa Barbara onwards is where you're SUPPOSED to disagree with Ellie's choices; the fact that people didn't or for some reason can't disagree with Ellie going after Abby is where I think a lot of the hate for this game comes from.
I also really enjoy how Jett can very clearly disagree with characters he loves and not dislike the story, which I see happen quite a bit.

Yes, you're supposed to disagree with Ellie's choices. But you're also supposed to have deep empathy for her.
If anything, that is, imo, the toughest challenge of the game. Seeing Abby's side of things, one can logically understand that she was justified, just as much as Ellie was in going after Abby initially. You're supposed to have understanding and/or empathy for Abby.
At the end of the game, however, we are presented with Ellie. She's on the same journey that Abby was, just at an earlier state.
She's hurt herself, and her family (because she's mentally unwell and suicidal). She will do things you might not agree with and become much darker.
Can you show her that same empathy and understanding? Not want to enable her, but want better for her?
I felt like a disappointed parent at the end of the game. But I was also VERY proud of Ellie for not hitting rock bottom, for walking away from, what is basically, her addiction. I was proud of her for choosing a better path to move forward.

my favorite part of the ending is the symbolism! like yes, the guitar being abandoned at the end could mean that ellie was moving on, but at the same time you realize that she couldn't play the song anymore because, thanks to her choosing the path of revenge for the last time, she lost the only thing that still bonded her to joel.
it's sad that *most* people who didn't like the game don't get its message.

    • @dannie0525
      @dannie0525 8 місяців тому +8

The symbolism can be so multi-layered: leaving the guitar is Ellie moving on; unable to play guitar again is the consequences of her own chain of decisions, meaning she has lost a very important part of her (she had been writing music, and now she can't play anymore); walking away from the home is Ellie now faces the world anew, even though she now has to do it on her own, and that this is where she can begin to start "finding something to live for", like both Joel and Abby did.

She just needs a left-handed guitar and she'll be fine. She still has those guitar skills, which is the actual thing that bonds her to Joel - the things she learned from him. The memories.
Leaving the guitar behind isn't necessarily about leaving Joel behind - it's about letting go.
The more interesting symbolism is the moth on the guitar. Ellie lets go of the moth - a being that is always attracted to the flame, that burns out and dies.

I've seen a lot of people describe this game as a revenge game, but if you look at it differently, it's really a story of forgiveness. When Ellie and Joel were having their last conversation, Ellie stated she would like to try and forgive Joel. And in the end when Ellie left his guitar, I think it was symbolizing her finally letting go, and forgiving him. I could be wrong! But that's what I think. Jett, I absolutely LOVED your playthough, everyday after school I would always check if you posted, I would be ecstatic when you did, love you man KEEP IT UPP!!!

So to me I feel like Ellie saying she would like to try and forgive Joel was effectively her forgiving him. When you are out on patrol with Dina at the beginning of the game Ellie talks about watching a movie with Joel later that day (sadly didn't happen for obvious reasons) and so her mission became to rebuild her relationship with Joel.
But why did it need to be rebuilt? Well Joel lied to Ellie as we all know and Ellie felt betrayed and angry over it which then led to her distancing herself from Joel and psychologically torturing him to sort of make him pay for what he robbed her of with that lie and so on.
*I think at the end the one Ellie is forgiving is herself.* She feels horrible over how she treated Joel those last couple of years and being so stubborn to not forgive him sooner so she could spend more time with him while he was still alive. This is also the delusion that keeps Ellie going back to the revenge quest as Abby symbolises the thing that kept Ellie away from rebuilding her relationship with Joel. Abby took that from her. But ultimately Ellie seeing Abby in that sorry state kind of snapped her back to reality at the last moment. There is still some of Ellie left in there.

If you look closely to the other wrist you'll see a bracelet. And people where saying she went to Jackson to meet Dina and Baby JJ (that would explain the bracelet) so what we see and experience is actually Ellie closing the Joel thing and let everything behind once for all.
I haven't checked if this theory was dismissed by ND, but I'd love to believe she ended up having a good life. A hope this message helps you heal your soul, because this game broke mine back in 2020 when I first played it and it still hurts.

This story is about Ellie and her relationship with Joel but it’s also about every other character in the game. They are all layered and multidimensional. Abby was important because she was Ellie’s foil. Her counterpart in the story. Both Ellie and Abby started the game in different emotional states and motivation and ended it with a different emotional state and motivation. They both change through the game. The gameplay was very important to the story, learning more about Abby and seeing Ellie , Tommy and Joel through her perspective adds a lot of layers to Ellie, Joel and Tommy. Playing as Abby makes you see Ellie, Tommy and Joel as a complete whole and not just from one sided perspective but from both the extremes. You get to know Ellie in every way and from different perspectives. That boss fight with Ellie? It added so much depth to how I see Ellie and the same with the mysterious sniper moment with Tommy and Abby. Every moment in gameplay and every place in the environment was rich and added layers and dimensions to the world, story and characters. Ellie felt extremely guilty the whole game. If you understood anything about Elie in the first game , you should have understood that her greatest wish was for her immunity to save humanity. She felt deep in her heart that Joel was lying to her and they show you how she subtly questions Joel hoping he will tell her the truth by himself but he never did. She went and discovered the truth and it literally destroyed her. Joel took away her greatest desire , she wanted her immunity to mean something. She feels guilty being the only person with immunity and yet it means nothing for humanity( survive’s guilt very realistic) She loves Joel with all her heart but she can’t just easily forgive him for what he did. With time , she was slowly trying to mend what was broken between them and just when she started to forgive him he was taken from her brutally and in front of her eyes. She doesn’t only feel guilt about her immunity now, she feels guilt towards not being able to save Joel and she feels guilt towards the state of their relationship before his death. The PTSD here is damaging. It starts with anger and revenge , with time the guilt cripples her specially after she kills the pregnant lady. Now faced with Abby she feels all the guilt come back. The way she told her “ You don’t have a cure because of me, I’m the one you want” this just shows you how conflicted Ellie is. She feels guilty toward Joel and towards all of humanity including the fireflies. She took away their salvation. A world where these monsters are no longer there. Abby leaves Dina alive thanks to lev. Ellie tries to move on but she still feels so guilty over Joel. She can’t stop hearing his screams. She just wants that feeling to stop. She goes after Abby again and when she’s finally between her hands she understands the feeling of guilt will not stop even if she killed her. Ellie will just add a new guilt to her long list. That boy with Abby Lev , is just another Ellie with another Joel now. Joel used to be a merciless killer , meeting Ellie changed him for the better. Meeting Lev did the same for Abby. Ellie lets her go and that’s the first step in healing. Both Abby and Ellie understand now why Joel did what he did , Abby would do the same for Lev in a heartbeat and Ellie saw Joel and herself in Abby’s and Lev’s relationship. It’s all connected and it all serve the story. It was brilliant and phenomenal storytelling. It’s very rare for us to know our characters so intimately inside out and from different perspectives. Ellie leaving Abby alive was never about Abby herself. It was completely about Ellie and her realization. She didn’t need to see everything from Abby’s pov , all she needed was general knowledge of her circumstances to understand. Playing as Abby was important for us to see Ellie, Tommy and Joel in more complete ways. In ways we usually put in the back of our minds while we focus on how they see themselves instead of who they are as a whole.
Abby was not presented in a good light. Even her friends and the people around her called her out for her brutality and her unpleasant personality. She was called out for torturing Joel instead of just killing him even when he saved her life. She was called out for ruining her relationship with Owen because of her aggressiveness but still got in the way of him moving on. She slept with a drunken man who was already with someone else and after she planted hope in his heart she pretended she cared nothing for what happened. She was called out for being Issac’s top killer with no remorse. The only reason she helped Lev and Aya was to make herself feel better because she knows she a scum of a human. That’s what the game presented. It’s only at the very end that she changed after she burned out all her bridges. She changed for real when she went through the village with Lev and Yara … that’s when she understood Joel because she would do anything to save Lev . She would do what Joel did. She understood she is just like him. She killed her own group to save Lev. It’s all connected and told beautifully.

@@X5J2UY 100% this, because all of this in both games, from the stories and fates of the main characters, to that of the side characters (even starting with what happened to Sarah), to the stories you read on notes or through environmental story telling. It's all there to highlight the importance of Ellie's role as the cure. Hell, even the possible grim future of little kids like JJ fall into this.
Her immunity is what could heal the world again, slowly drive us away from savagery and possible extinction that the infection brought us, towards something resembling a modern society again, saving so many lives and relationships.
That's why I think if they make a Part 3 they should go back to that topic, but this time have it go down on Ellie's terms. Have her a) realize that she matters as a person itself, regardless of her being the cure. And b) become this leader type figure that herself seeks out a way to create a cure together with the Fireflies, sacrificial or not - although I think a self sacrifice on her terms just makes more sense narratively, but this could be quite a few years in the future.

As for the Tommy thing, since I know you're confused on it. Tommy has nothing left anymore; his brother's gone, he and Maria aren't together anymore, he has no eye, can hardly use both legs, he's completely lost himself. The ONLY thing he has now is this hunt for Abby, and due to his leg, he's unable to go down that suicidal path himself, so he instead guilts Ellie into going on it instead not realizing or even trying to realize that Ellie has lost just as much, if not more than he has at this point (In his pov, Ellie's losses were covered up by that big nice farmhouse, as well as Dina + JJ).
You may ask something along the lines of, "But wasn't Tommy okay abandoning this revenge mission at the end of Seattle Day 3?". Yes, he did say that, and mean it however the circumstances between then and on the farm are completely different. Tommy back in Seattle could still fight, and Dina was very sick via her pregnancy. This matters because at that point Tommy thought that once they got back to Jackson he could at some point go back after Abby, but this is of course NOT how it played out.
Tommy never gave up his revenge mission for Abby, he simply intended to postpone it.

Hoo boy. I've been affected by replaying and rewatching this game for four years, and yet watching it again with you has been so rewarding all over again. Feeling your raw emotions was a great way to see it through new eyes. Most importantly, you immediately keyed into the journey Naughty Dog created, from hate to perspective. I appreciated that so much.
I remember so clearly not wanting to push forward on the stick when it switched to Abby's side. In the Home Depot section when it became clear she had her own skill tree and weapon upgrades, I was with everyone else - I did NOT want to play this chick. But I trusted Naughty Dog. I knew what they were going to try to do then, and I had to see how they'd pull it off. Abby's half of the game far exceeded those expectations and contains my favorite parts.
It's simply a masterpiece that's beyond a game, more than a movie, almost a form of literature. It is its own thing, and it only becomes richer with each playthrough.

Great reaction. I was right there with you on "Ellie, stay yo ass HOME!" This game really puts everyone through the ringer! Fun fact, the Rattler with the baseball bat and who got chomped was voiced by Logic :D.

Oh shit. I didn't know that was Logic. I knew the big one was Laura Bailey's irl husband, though. That's crazy.

Jettro, man THANK YOU for such a wonderful play through. The BEST on UA-cam. I so appreciate you taking your time thinking through the story, your emotions, and really examining every part you can. This game needs that kind of thought to really impact you the way it’s meant to… I know you’re relieved it’s over but I’m sad! I’ve really enjoyed watching these. Thanks again.

This and Red dead redemption 2 are the best games I’ve ever played but for me TLOU2 is probably the only game that reached me in away no other game could I really felt every emotion you could possibly feel during my first playthrough and had such a connection to all the different characters we met along the way

TloU2 is such an enigma to me because on paper I should love it just as much as I do rdr2, and I love rdr2 a lot. Heavy story, lots of characters, good music. but where rdr2 made me feel “full” for weeks after the end, I stepped away from TloU2 feeling like I got scolded(?) or yelled at if that makes any sense. maybe some players liked that novelty
Some fans insisting I had an empathy screw loose didn’t help but on release tensions were high. at this point I chalk it up to different tastes in narrative

Hey bro, I happened across your chanel through this game. Just want to say I am so refreshed by your outlook and acceptance to all the story, difficulties, and characters in this and you've truly been a breath of fresh air. So honest and genuine. Take time for yourself now you've finished this game now. I needed therapy after I finished playing this. It hits different and hope you're OK. Massive love and respect
