Unparalleled elegance is a phrase I would more readily apply to Fred Astaire. Raft can be smooth, but he also mixes in a lot of comic moves....not really elegant.

But since I've managed to unearth so many videos of Raft, I find him much more versatile than Astaire - both smooth And comical, so totally entertaining! Apparently, they had a hot affair going at the time. And though he became known later for his stiff acting style, there are many old videos out there of Raft's crazy, versatile and joyful style of dancing. A fascinating life. I believe those legal (Hays) restrictions came next!

He was 5.7 and Carole was 5.6 He was not considered that short in 1934 but Carole was tall for that time period
Yes, those are specially designed shoes for working such a variety of styles, as Raft did. Dancers still use them today.
