Lombards dress is just amazing. The Flow. The movement. Beats any dress that Ginger ever had.
George Raft had such a distinctive style. Influences of Cakewalk,
    Charleston, Burlesque, Shimmy.
    My grandmothers favourite film star.
She named my father after Ronald Coleman. But she told me that her secret crush was George Raft. "He made my knees go weak" she said.

I'm just beginning to appreciate what a cool guy George Raft was. Suave. Gentlemanly. Sophisticated.

George Raft, what a range; at once the toughest of tough guys while at the same time a silky smooth dancer of unparalleled elegance!

Unparalleled elegance is a phrase I would more readily apply to Fred Astaire. Raft can be smooth, but he also mixes in a lot of comic moves....not really elegant.

@@coloraturaEliseYes, it's interesting how different styles appear to different viewers. Astaire certainly was "elegant" in his movement. But since I've managed to unearth so many videos of Raft, I find him much more versatile than Astaire - both smooth And comical, so totally entertaining! During interviews, he called himself a dance " stylist".

That number: in the view, of this observer; completely, absolutely, and utterly: had it all over; The Bolero Dance Sequence: That [ was ] performed, in the later segment of the film. George Raft: whose style, elegance, performance, was totally spectacular! -- And!.....The Sweet, Beautiful, Sensual: And Utterly Lovely; Carol Lombard -- Absolutely Delicious!! ---- WOW!!!!

Carole Lombard is no Ginger Rogers but George Raft can really cut a rug! And did you see his high heels?

Those style shoes are still worn by male dancers today. Female dancers also wear a similar style for dancing.

notice the heels on George Raft's shoes. He must have been a really short guy.

He was 5.7 and Carole was 5.6 He was not considered that short in 1934 but Carole was tall for that time period

Yes, those are specially designed shoes for working such a variety of styles, as Raft did. Dancers still use them today.

Sexy and very entertaining. Did you catch what George was doing with the cane when Lombard was dancing in front of him? Hays Office alert.

Is he sort of hitting her rear end?

    • @aileen694
      @aileen694 Рік тому +2

😂😂😂 Here I was cheering him for the fancy "twirling" of that cane...but you're both right! Raft was definitely poking Lombard's bottom with each step. And doing it with a big smirk too! Apparently, they had a hot affair going at the time. And though he became known later for his stiff acting style, there are many old videos out there of Raft's crazy, versatile and joyful style of dancing. A fascinating life.
I believe those legal (Hays) restrictions came next!

Wouldn't it be great if there was footage hidden away in some vault of Cagney and Raft in a dance routine?

romanclay1913, I've read a lot on Raft and those days. Apparently, the moral (Hays law) restrictions came just after this film. 😁
