If you’ve ever wondered about the best way to test for food allergy reactivity (or essentially how sensitive you are to a particular allergen), this episode is for you!
If you’ve thought that you’re either allergic (and thus highly reactive) to specific foods or you’re not, that’s not true. A sliding scale of reactivity or sensitivity exists for IgE food allergies that makes this a bit more complicated.
While food allergy testing isn’t perfect and can sometimes show false positives, many functional medicine practitioners don’t relay information correctly and unfortunately recommend full avoidance of foods that you actually tolerate without issue.
So let’s discuss the best test for food allergy reactivity, how to understand food allergy test results (WITH context), and ways to potentially reduce reactivity to food allergies.
My guest is Dr. David Fitzhugh - an allergist/immunologist in private practice in Chapel Hill, North Carolina specializing in food immunotherapy for children and adults with severe food allergies. He also treats a wide variety of allergic and immunologic conditions, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, mast cell disorders, and anaphylaxis.

This conversation has been a million times more enlightening than any doctor in my small town in Venezuela. Thank you profusely for taking the time to share this information with us! ❤
Ps. I've stated away from all the histamine rich foods except for plantains, just to see if I tolerate it. 🤞
