- Views from the Footplate - A Ride on a Stanier 8F - The Yorkshire Dales Model Railway
This weekend I had the opportunity to ride of the footplate of a visiting Stanier 8F at the East Lancashire Railway Steam Gala. I thought I'd combine some footage from the footplate with my Hornby 8F running on my layout.

As always, thanks for watching.
Hi Lewis, I could not be more 'real' ! Excellent filming and editing. Always a wonderful experience and most inspiring. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Filip
Thanks Filip!
Great video and excellent live shots with a clever interspersing of model shots. Very cool presentation!
Thanks Anthony 😀
In the past I have always found your drivers and firemen looked a little stiff! They have loosened up considerably. Perhaps the coffee?
I cannot recall ever seeing this technique used before, Lewis. A great idea, well implemented! Don't know how you could have blended it better!
Ha thanks Steve - appreciate it 😀
Never saw anything like this . Great idea , great realisation. What will come next ?
Thanks, glad you liked it! I need to blag another footplate ride I guess 🤣
It's an interesting experiment to combine live action with model footage. I think the experiment worked and I would like to see more.
Glad you liked it!
I agree 100% on this video mix comment. This is where model trains(and layouts) are validated by real prototypes and surrounding landscape and vice versa. Great clip in all aspects just wish it was a bit longer lol. Where was the actual 8f running to?
Can you please do 92199 hauling the Hogwarts Express coaches, 75019 piloting 92085 hauling the Pines Express coaches, Tintagel No. 73084 piloting Bideford No. 34019 hauling the Torbay Express coaches, 92178 hauling the Cambrian Coast Express coaches, 53807 hauling the Cornish Riviera Express coaches, 53806 hauling the North Wales Coast Express coaches, 75009 and 53810 hauling the Flying Scotsman Express coaches, Merlin No. 73080 piloting Ottery St Mary No. 34045 hauling The Broadsman coaches, 92000 hauling the The East Anglian Express coaches, and 75033 and Westward Ho No. 34036 hauling The Wildlife Foundation Express coaches by giving them all twelve coaches each to haul and make the route become more larger?
Great idea - I don’t have many of those locos though 😬
@@MouldyRaspberry But I hope you will get them and more tracks, buildings, railways, locos, rolling stock, stations, sheds, signalboxes, signals, and many more.
That's a lengthy ask.
That's just so cool how you did this video. 😊 .Cheers 🍻
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant..., Absolutely bloomin brilliant!!!.... I could watch this all day....🚂🚂🚂
Thanks 😀
Hi Lewis thanks for the video 📹 and the 8f cab shot from the NYR thanks again for the video 📹 and keep up the good work thanks again Lewis for Glasgow
Thanks Cameron!
Thanks Lewis, this has brightened me up from my hospital bed on a grey Monday, great innovation we’ll be seeing you on the footplate soon.
Glad you enjoyed it Brian! Hope you’re feeling better soon.
Hi Lewis, thanks for this awesome compilation!❤ CHEERS, Olli "DER crazy Z-CRACK" 👌
Thanks Olli 👍🏻
Ingenious Lewis! I think I recognise our 8F - on loan, perhaps to the NYMR? As a platform inspector at the GCR at Loughborough I despatch trains, and wonder if you’ve ever considered adding the dispatcher and guards whistle sounds to your videos as trains depart stations?
Thanks! This was the weekend before last when it was up at the East Lancs Railway. That’s a great idea, next time I down there I’ll make sure to get my phone out and record when the guard blows his whistle.
Hi Lewis, what a cracking video, a combination of the real and the almost real. At times it was almost hard to tell the difference. Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg!
I didn't think it would be possible to improve from your normal level of excellence - but you have! Outstanding!
(Tongue in cheek: perhaps you should have used a water spray for the model to match the live action!).
Thanks 😀
Lewis😂... Bet you would never think this. Currently sat on a side table in the lounge with my 3yo watching this on the main tv, shes pretending to be a passenger and im the driver 😂😂😂😂😂... Great video, looked like great experience 👍
Haha that’s the life! Thanks Ande 😀
A wonderfully edited video combining the footplate footage and model railway layout. As always, an enjoyable watch.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Cleverly done Lewis. It had a smile on my face throughout.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent and read all about your Misselthwaite and just impressive to say the least
Thank you!
Very nice can you do a br standard 2mt cab ride
I’ll have to see if I can blag a footplate ride on the KWVR!
Hi Lewis Absolutely wonderful, great the way combined the the footage. It must have been a wonderful experience for you to be on there, I don't know if was your first but I don't think it will be your last. well done Lewis thank you .
Thanks Tony. Only once before, I got a ride on a GWR Prarie tank, but it wasn’t as good as an 8F!
How on earth did you mange the “live” shots with your station platforms? Terribly ingenious and clever!
Thanks 😬
Oh, I was expecting a cab ride on the actual model. :)
Read my comment about this.
I need a smaller camera!
Mouldy Raspberry, this is my favorite video of yours yet. This channel deserves so much more attention than it gets. Keep up the good work!
Thanks David!
Fantastic video it's as if your on it. The best model video I have ever seen. Thanks for showing it. Cheers Barry
Thanks Barry!
Was that Bernard Cribbins on the shovel, as in his Hornby adverts or is your layout mega big? Seriously clever upload.
Haha thanks, glad you enjoyed it Peter 😬
Go on then, I give in, how've you managed to get the little fireman figure to move inside the model?😎😎😎😎❤️👍
I used a shrink ray on a real human 😬
¡Hola buenas tardes Lewis! Well, you’ve nailed it. ‘nough said.
Thanks Gary!
Stunning combination of running shots, love it! 😍
Cheers John b😎
Thanks John!
What a treat to ride the footplate amazing. Great views as always of your layout to compliment the real.
Thanks 😬
Nice idea those alternate views between your model and the real engine ! Well thought, well done, great show !
Glad you liked it Olivier!
And there was me thinking you put a very small camera into the locomotive 😂 excellent as usual Lewis
Haha thanks Barry! I would like to get one of those cube cameras actually.
An unusual idea for a video and you pulled it off brilliantly! Well done
Thanks 😀
Great video Lewis
I really liked the live shots on the gcr railway from the footplate
Thanks Mark. This was on the East Lancs Railway, they had the 8F visiting from the GCR last weekend 😬 I can’t imagine they wanted to send it back!
Wow, this was fun! You've done a really nice job and it was great to see all that view form the cab, thanks!
Thanks, glad you liked it 😀
That was first class Lewis ,view on the footplate then cutting to your loco ,brilliant .😊😊
Thanks Steve!
Great video and I think it has to be one one of the better of Hornby s locos , ( I have the LMS version) . Wonderful to see the real locomotive and hear it thank you.
Thanks! One of my favourite Hornby locos as well.
Another great video, something for my grandson to aspire to with his filming, of his model railway to share on here 🙂👍
Thank you! 😀
Genius. One moment I am in the real experience of riding the rail and then the world of model railroading. So well done that at times I am uncertain; is this real or a beautiful recreation of reality.
Thanks Mike!
What station building did you use for missel thwaite? Idk if I spelt that right

Love it! Great idea 👍
Thanks 😀
Just got a weatherd Hornby 8f for £40 at the great electric train show
Bargain!!
That worked really well. Very immersive.
Thanks! Glad you liked it 👍🏻
Hi,
A very different film from you this time and who's a luck man getting to ride on the footplate not something we can do often. I hope you know that using Photos from your live footage you could use them to show your layout rolling past this steam engine which with the detail on the layout would look great. I have done some with a 101 DMU on my layout but my trainset is not in the same ballpark as yours as mine do not do well on YT I would be interested to see how you would fair. A very nice video all the same well done.
Cheers Robert.
Thanks Robert. That sounds interesting, I’ll have to have a go at that 👍🏻
@@MouldyRaspberry Cheers for the reply I note you do not have a camera small enough to do the drivers view I use a Polaroid Cube + but cheaper ones are available online or you could borrow mine.
Cheers Robert.
Wieder ein klasse Video. Das MIschen ECHT und MODELL ist toll.
Danke 😀
brilliant edited video mate. live steam and model railway excellent
Thanks 😀
The crossover we've all been waiting for!
Glad you liked it! 😬
Great Video Lewis! Good thinking!
Thanks 😀
At 1:20 you can see 2 axles on the tender not rotating. Seems odd.
Hmm well spotted, will have to take a look at those.
Mr Mouldy. Good job that! I was at the ELR on the Friday. We could have met up! 😊
Ah sorry I missed you John. I did pop into ramsbottom on Friday to see the 8F pass Leander, it was chucking it down!
@@MouldyRaspberry I was there when it happened!!
You are to be commended for being the first (that I now of) to mix HO scale with 1:1 scale. A brilliant and very creative innovation on your part. So realistic, you even included rain . :) Ronn
Thanks Ronn!
I have used a 1:1 photo of a 101 DMU cab and used it to do a drivers view around my OO gauge train set and others have done the same including Graham at Lakeside to see mine look at JUST TRAINS video.
Cheers Robert.
Very nicely done sir, great show.
Thanks Rob 👍🏻
East lancs is my "local" heritage railway. I've been visiting for over 20 years. Would love to know how you got a ride on the footplate on a gala day
I was there with a friend who is a long time volunteer in their engineering dept so he asked the driver if I could hop on for a bit - I did feel very lucky!
@@MouldyRaspberry that's fantastic! Determined to volunteer myself one of these days
Nice combination, who doesn't love a footplate ride? But way too short. Should have used the bigger railway to show the footplate ride from the beginning to where your cab ride ended. That's how magical a footplate ride is.
Thanks! I guess I just wanted to enjoy it rather than filming the whole thing - guess I’ll have to do another one 😉
good vid on chnnel nice layout thanks lee
Thanks Lee
Brilliant idea, great film work.
Thanks!
always lovely to see the 8F one of my all time favourites since Hornby Doublo Days !
One of mine too 😬
Wasn't it an 8F that Hornby used to demonstrate the Ringfield motor with a 24hr run and mega load of trucks??@@MouldyRaspberry
Hey not sure how to message you so I thought I'd leave a comment instead. My dad used to comment on pretty much all your videos up to about 10 months ago and he loved everything you did. Always spoke about your videos giving him ideas and how much it took his mind of things too. I just want to say thank you for making my dad smile and for giving him inspiration for his layout he built. Thank you for being kind and replying to him. I don't know his youtube channel off by heart but I can put it in the comments and when I go on his UA-cam. Its just nice to know someone could cheer my dad up when he wasn't doing well himself. You may or may not remember him but if you do I just want to say thank you for making my smile and excited for when you uploaded new videos. Hope you take it easy :)
Sorry making him smile 🤦♀️ his channel name was chrisclark6192
Hi Kayley. Yes I remember Chris commenting, he always seemed like a lovely chap! Well I’m glad I managed to cheer him up a bit sometimes, that makes posting the videos worthwhile. Wishing your family all the best.
Yea he loved your videos and would always look forward to your next upload. Always said how nice you was especially because you spoke to him too.
It means alot I'll pass message to my mum too but again thanks for being you :) ❤️
The next level, fabulous.
Thanks!
Nice video great shots too
Thanks 👍🏻
Brilliant video,well done.
Thanks!
Very imaginative...
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Slipping drivers!
It was pretty slippery on that run after a big rain shower
That's very innovative! Love the way the colours of the "real" station (especially the footbridge) match your layout.
Watching the footplate crew reminds me of when I drove/fired an 8F at the Great Central Railway.
Thanks! Wow that’s great - the driver and fireman were saying how much they loved it so I can imagine that was a great experience!
@MouldyRaspberry It was fabulous and as it was the GCR we were allowed to travel at 45 mph with 6 coaches in tow and pass other trains at speed on the double track section. WHAT an unforgettable day. Braking was the most difficult skill to master.
nice video
Thanks!
Clever
Thanks!
Great loco this Stanier!!! Well done the mix from the footplate and the model. As always a nice video Lewis! Cheers Onno.
Thanks Onno!
A very realistic shot with the live shots in between, now you definitely need some smoke from the locomotives ❤❤❤
Haha true! Glad you liked it.
Inspired!! Got to love an 8F...real and modelled!
Thanks - agreed! 😀
Entertaining, the combination of 1:1 and 00❗😁👍
Thanks 😬
I'm sorry but that didn't work for me. 🙂
No need to apologise!
