Actually, the vendor who installed your machines is lazy, thus allowing theft. Most machines have switches and settings that disallow external settings and require opening with the key to gain computer access. So after physically opening the machine with a key, there are also options to allow/disallow motor test mode or financial reporting mode externally.
The only vending machine hack I knew was tying a string to your coin and insert it into the coin slot, input number you want and quickly yank the coin out

at 4:40 if you pay close attention, the vending machine says credit 1.00 meaning it has $1 in it so when he puts his money in then the vending maching contains $2. obviously when he buys something he will get $1 back
I work for a vending company... there is no hack by pushing any buttons on the outside. there is a mode button inside the machine that allows us to use the outside buttons as keys to get information on the machine. The fact that they used to have using tape on the dollar don't work anymore because the new bill validators have little spikes that will not allow money to come back out through the same way it went in
There actually are ways to "hack" vending machines, or at least there used to be, by just trying to use the operator codes or whatever they're called. Basically a series of key presses that would put the machine into some sort of debug mode. The soda machine at my old school was unchanged from the operator code in the manual, which I found online, and I used that to get free drinks all the time.
after putting in the coins into the Pepsi Machine, then choosing selection number 4 to start the whole 4-2-3-1 string, wouldn't the drink for 4 come out before the full sequence is entered... put in $, choose 4, get 4. Why didn't this happen, or explained?
