I just watched a few of these DIY coaster YT vids. Also read the comments. Even with the edit mix I about the lining, this was my favorite YT video to help me make coasters. I also liked thy I didn’t have to worry about interfacing, or what kind of interfacing, etc. Thank you!
Just want to thank you for teaching me how to do this. I made my first one yesterday, but am realizing how much of what fabric I need, and all the little details. I was making a set but saw I had not been accurate enough in getting each square exactly 5x5 (size I'm making) but I knew I couldn't be perfect at first. I'm 71 and hadn't done any sewing since highschool 😁 but really appreciate your tutorials. I'm planning to have 2 sets of these for Christmas gifts, thank you again, Denise in Crescent City, CA. PS I decided to cut all my own since the pre-cuts (neither pack I ordered) had enough of one design to make these particular type, and I love this type 🥰

Hmm . . . 3 years after you shared this, I’m searching for ideas for 35 (really! 35!) quick/simple, but attractive gifts for my son’s doctors/staff. I think this is it. Thank you. I have a major stash of fabric. This and some candy in a small drawstring bag might be perfect. You seem to have my favorite how-to’s quite often. Thank you!!
This is great for those 5" charm packs I bought and didnt know what to do with. It also makes for a super absorbent coaster, all that fabric doubling without additional batting or bulk. Great for my cubicle. Thank you for sharing your talents and ideas with the rest of us.

If you need a simple gift that you can make up in no time, look no further! Sew up a few of these with your fabric scraps for a beautiful set of coasters. CORRECTION - the labelling of the base and lining should've been reversed at the beginning.
I made one, used it for a week, washed it, used it again and I really love this design. I made 36, (9 sets of 4), to give as gifts. I have a tip about the overlap. When I made my first one my sewing foot slipped underneath the fabric of the overlap as I had one of the bottom strips overlapped on top of the upper strip. I then positioned the next one with the overlap always going from high to low in the direction of the sewing. I made about 5 each with the two different overlap pattern, as I wanted to make sure one method didn't slip or shift more than the next. Seems to be the same, and I find I can go slightly faster.
You’ve been busy! Maybe try building up some scrap fabric to same height just to put on the other side of foot while you’re sewing. Thanks for watching🙏😊

Thanks Mary. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work to sew it but the fabric of the tie may not be as absorbent as cotton if used with cold drinks…. Thanks for watching.😊
I've watched many of this project and no one has ever mentioned this important step: Whatever fabric you use as you lay out the 4, that design will be hidden in the folding. Solution is to lay out your design on the side then flip all 4 over onto the stack before sewing. If you want a very specific pattern on the fabric to show on the final (such as a mushroom in the center, or bugs facing all the same direction) the 4 pieces held together and flipped is critical to get the desired finish. I've made many of these and it will take a lot more fabric than expected to get the right direction of the fold to be shown on the finish.
I actually filmed a whole other tutorial for fussy cutting fabric to get the part of print that you want. I never bothered to edit it as this video did not get many views. Use a clear template to make out the area that you want to show when completed to help with the cutting.
I'm confused. At 28 seconds in, you show the green fabric as the lining, but once you sew and turn everything out, the green is now on the outside. What am I missing?
What type of material are you using for your base and lining. I bought batting but not sure if I use it as a base or lining. Sorry for such a stupid question. Love your close-up instructions!

Mine has finished with my lining on the outside. On your video you name the green as lining and it finishes up on the outside. I’ll unpick mine and change the order of the first 2 flat pieces- outside fabric on TOP of lining. no- one else has mentioned so maybe I am missing something.

Could I use felt as the lining?
I don’t see why not as it will be nice on any surface. I’m just not sure how it will wash? ( I don’t use felt for any projects…. yet)

That’s just my way of minimising bulk. You can just cut on 45 degree angle. Please have a look at some of my other easy tutorials. Cheers!

Not missing something. You are the sharpest one out there. I should’ve reversed it on the first coaster as it is the base in the second.

Also you don't use batting is that the best way
You can add a layer of batting between the bottom layers if you want a thicker coaster
