I can confirm this as true, a very good friend of mine spent his working life working for Balfour Beatty, who are contractors for the London Underground, so spent his life in the London Underground environment, a few years ago he was diagnosed with Asbestosis, he died early last year from the disease.

Its a nasty disease I lost my best buddy at age 42 to it, he worked in the bowels of ships in the Portsmouth dockyard wraping pipes with asbestos for insulation, I remember his house being plumbed out with pipes to carry oxygen around his home to where he sat, next to his bed and even in his bathroom. then the delivery of large bottles of oxygen to keep him breathing. if it wasnt for the lack of saftey standards back in the day he would still be here.

Good work BCG. This topic needs more exposure. If TFL and the Mayor wanted more people to switch from commuting by car to the London Underground they should have started by cleaning up the air on the Underground. They can't claim ULEZ is for the benefit of people's health and then ignore the health of those travelling by tube.

I worked on the London Underground nearly 20 years ago, on the refurbishment of the Earls Court tunnels - now abandoned. While we were being inducted, we were warned about disturbing the brake dust which covered everything in a lot of the underground infrastructure - the old brake linings contained asbestos (as did most brake linings at one time). The thick dust within the tunnels had a high concentration of asbestos particles. In opening up an abandoned link tunnel to one of the platforms, the dust was disturbed, and no doubt distributed through the ventilation system. Apparently this was a common occurrence across the underground network. Far more deadly than exhaust fumes, and tens of thousands of people are exposed to it every day. Sort that one out before going after motorists, Mr Mayor!

White Asbestos killed my dad, takes about 30yrs from exposure to signs of cancer.
Worryingly I was exposed to it back in the 90s, my Drs know this ,so I have to have tests every year.
So I m on a ticking time bomb..
And when it came out it was the wonder material.
I m mid 50,s and lost dad when he was just 70s
Just for sad khan, I have asthma, and work on cars all day, actually sorting out emissions from mot failures, yet it never triggers my asthma !! Yet pollen and animals do trigger it..😮

      Thank you very much,
I just wanted to bring it home to others just how lethal asbestosis is, and what else might be down in those underground stations ,that's been covered over.
And on car emissions, as long as it passes the MOT , set by the Ministry, and the test machines are tested and pass. Then how can they be high pollution causes.
Another thing, the Sad IQ , states he has adult asthma, and this " stunted lungs"
So I went on the NHS site and went to asthma , it starts with this ,
THEY DONT KNOW WHAT CAUSES ASTHMA !!
And STUNTED LUNGS is caused by malnutrition according to the health service of the UK ?
So may be Grays or NHS should consider sad IQ for a new consultancy job when he gets his P45 next year !!! Lol.
Keep up the fight BCG .

  • @bentullett6068
    @bentullett6068 Рік тому +17

You don't need a meter to know how bad air quality is in the underground. Trains are always covered in black soot, track always thick with dust and if you watch the Secrets Of The London Underground when they show you the abandoned sections of the line are always thick with the dust. Also there is a certain smell similar to that if you grind metal when you enter a tube station compared to to street level atmosphere. Surely extraction of all of these harmful emissions should be vented or filtered out of the tunnels better.

I'm no train expert, but if every car and truck used asbestos friction material for brakes and clutches from the early 1900's until the 1980's, I bet the tube trains did as well. 80 years worth of it just blowing around in circles everytime a train comes along.

I used to live in a sleepy little town up north and met several newcomers who had moved north from London. The one thing I noticed mote than anything else was the ashen grey complexions they all had. After a while they all started to look more well, presumably because of the relatively fresh air they hadnt had previously. Living or existing in London now myself I know when I haven't been out of town for a while because I look like crap if I don't. Ulez charges are preventing me from getting out of town for my previously weekly dose of fresh air!

Surely Kahn and TFL owe a duty of care to it's employees.
If the air within the London Underground is toxic with the same particulates that Khan says is the reason for expanding the ULEZ, surely he is breaking some sort of Health and Safety laws, this also goes for passengers as well.
He cannot argue that the air down in the stations is safe to breath and has no effect on the staff and general public, when stating that the air quality and safety he commissioned Imperial College to produce in support of ULEZ says that the air found topside is toxic enough to harm peoples lungs!
Someone should think about bringing a Class Action against the liar that is Sadiq Khan and let go up in front of a judge to justify the reason for letting people's lungs be damaged by the air pollutants in the LU.

No critism of your excellent reporting standards but why havent these whistle blowers gone to the main stream media with this information about pollution and asbestos? There seems to be a complete disreguard and neglect for saftey standards in the higher management of the underground railways. The public could then make an informed decision on wether they want to run the risk of exposure to it.

It is well documented that asbestos was used in the construction of the tube trains themselves. Asbestos products were used in the mechanical elements such as brakes and electrics. In addition, early tube trains were lined within the compartments to the walls, ceilings, and floors.
A personal note I remember in the past I was doing a brake job on my car and phoned my dad to ask why my brake disks had suddenly worn badly as they were fine the year before, he said in 3 years he had burned through 2 sets of front disks and asked the dealership, the reply was as Asbestos had been removed from pads they had to replace it with something else and that was eating the disks.

Keep up the good work. The criminal negligence deserves exposure.
If my mother were responsible for cleaning the tube, the particulate levels would be undetectable. 😅
Positive ventilation at the stations with relief vents between stations should clean the air for passengers.

Fantastic video it’s about time this government and future governments stopped trying to make money out of the poorest people and started spending it on them to protect their health and life this report will get smothered by those in power be very surprised if they let this out well done sir keep up the fight for those that can’t or won’t shout out about the real issues all the best

Brilliant detectoring there- I hope someone in City Hall watches this. FYI, a friend told me over 40 years ago, back when the UK still built its own trains, that the brake pads on the passenger carriages were made from, or lined with asbestos (I wasn't paying sufficient attention at that time); then he invited me to guess where the ventilation vents for the carriages were situated? I really hope that design isn't still in existence today...

Now we need to serve Khan with a notice of liability.....where are all you natural law and contract law guys? We need remedy!.....Thanks for keeping across this Brown Car Guy!
Also don't let us forget the big related issue of oncoming road pricing which is going to make private travel an even more difficult and expensive enterprise than ever before.....

They actually use magnetic vacuum cleaners, I saw this on a TV report once. They appeared to work, but at the same time, kicked up a lost more dust too.

Sadi Khan will try and worm his way out of it by saying it's the buildup of traffic on the roads and you need to give him £12.50 to help the Underground tube system to be more less polluted🙄??
