PM 2.5 & PM10 can vary by 30% depending on atmospheric conditions, you would need to do the same tests more frequently over a longer time period for a more accurate result, that said ULEZ has nothing to do with CO, PM2.5 or PM10 reduction. It's all about NOx emmisions. Euro 6 petrol engines vs EU4 (and a lot of EU3 vehicles) Is only around a 20% reduction, (some EU3 petrols emit less NOx than an EU6 diesel). Pre EU3 vehicles fail on emmisions not because they are worse, they fail because NOx was not tested on its own before 2000.
For diesel though, which is the biggest generator of NOx emissions, the EU6 standard reduces NOx limits by 84% over EU3 which is a much more significant reduction. The issue with NOx and diesel is that unfortunately most manufacturers ran their EU5 engines in a way that protected the DPF by running hotter with 40-50x more NOx emitted as a result than the EU5 standard allowed... So the really bad NOx issue was always transitory with EU5, and I suspect has also dropped significantly with EU6. Of course by TfL's own figures, by the time ULEZ was expanded more than 80% of people had naturally upgrade to EU6 compliant cars so the useful impact of ULEZ on NOx can only be limited anyway. As for variability of BCG's tests, the real takeaway is that the AQI was good before and is still good now, so very little appears to have changed. Not many people would approve of a scheme that turned good air quality to well, still good air quality...
Particulates in the air mainly come from tyres and brakes, so the ULEZ’s won’t have any real effect in reducing these airborne particles! Great video, thanks. Best wishes from the French Alps, Colin.
@@incandescentwithrage No it doesn’t! Here’s an extract from the latest data on the gov.uk website: Exhaust emissions have decreased markedly from 1996 to 2022 due to stricter emissions standards (decreased by 93 per cent for both PM2.5 and PM10). However, non-exhaust emissions (brake, tyre and road wear) have increased by 15 per cent for PM2.5 and increased by 14 per cent for PM10 between 1996 and 2022, as the overall number of kilometres travelled by vehicles each year in the UK has increased over this period. This means that most PM emissions from road transport derive from non-exhaust emissions, which alone contributed 15 per cent of total PM2.5 emissions and contributed 14 per cent of total PM10 emissions in 2022. www.gov.uk/government/statistics/emissions-of-air-pollutants/emissions-of-air-pollutants-in-the-uk-particulate-matter-pm10-and-pm25#:~:text=Road%20transport%20continues%20to%20be,%2C%20tyre%20and%20road%20wear).

so as we all said at the time it has nothing to do with air quality, but all about raising tax for tfl, and the mayor getting cameras installed so he can charge EVERY vehicle pay per mile and control when and where you can drive
One and a half year after the introduction of the Clear Air Zone in Birmingham, I have done the same test and compared the statistics from the official government sites, the result was the same, there was no difference in the air quality between the Clear Air Zone and the surrounding areas. I have asked the question what happened to the revenue earned from the charges, how come the Air quality is not changed at all. The simple answer was that the wind is blowing bad Air from the surrounding areas into the city centre. I couldn't believe this.
Flow of traffic, the way drivers drive and the amount of cars being directed through the same mapped streets( yes rich people pay Google to not put there roads on there maps….. I saved an hour one Friday after work ignoring my sat nav driving through empty roads. Fining people doesn’t change a thing Great work bro….. keep it up
I really appreciate what you're doing here and the effort you've gone to. Air quality is significantly impacted by weather and movement of air masses and it wouldn't be right to draw any conclusions from readings made from a single day - or even a week. The Mayor of London's office should be releasing data, but I expect they're waiting to be able to make a year-on-year comparison.
Brilliant video, thanks for the updates, these videos are priceless. Kind request: please return the jingle at the start of the videos, it makes my day when I hear it. 😁
Brilliant video I wish you had covered more areas Like south and east London to get a better overall idea Ulez just a big con Hopefully he will be gone in 2 months
Yep.. This has to be the crucial factor, doesn't it? Wind and rain will likely wash particulates out of the air, I guess. This would mean that results have to be averaged over quite a long time judging by the fairly large variations that you got. Even if whole months are used, it might still be possible for changes in the weather to affect the results.
Drive out into rural Buckinghamshire, find open fields where free from obvious emissions and take your readings. Compare those readings to those obtained on North Circular Road next to Brent Council monitoring station.
Why take readings in a field in Buckinghamshire when that would be completely irrelevant and not in the equation. The area and the comparisons he is, showing is in London places that he, studied before. The reason given for the charge is to improve air IN LONDON and it clearly shows that this excuse is not at all valid. It's a big lie and he proves that clearly therefore their is no reason nor excuse to justify extorting money from people for a benefit that doesn't exist. I ve spelled this out to you because you are obviously very thick and stupid.
So all modern cars must have cheat devices on their emissions. My 53 plate transit could do a return trip to London on 2/3 of a tank of diesel. The van I replaced it with; a 2012 used a whole tank for the same journey. The van I just replaced that with is a 2017 that uses 10 litres of oil per oil change, this means the engine never heats up fully. It's all a fraud as far I can see. ULEZ was supposed to improve air quality by 1.5%, which frankly is pointless considering the stress it has caused the public, which is more harmful than 1.5% decrease in air quality. It's been designed to for the poor to give up their cars.
Best not to question how efficiently an engine did, does, could and should be. The technology is in place, but people are to look for the answers. Not find them...
Sometimes I think the data they originally based the reasons for putting in low emissions zones in place was from outdated data from cities in the 1960's and 1970's when the majority of vehicles ran leaded petrol and diesel engines were a bit more smokey and had zero emissions control.
I don't understand why the London mayor would not want to publish the air quality results!! he was SO SURE it would improve his pockets!!! Opps I mean the air quality in London.
Air quality has more to do with air movement, than number of cars. Or at least when it comes to measuring it. Air quality is worse on hot, dry windless days. Also, half the air pollution comes from vehicles. The rest comes from buildings. All that heating kicking out carbon monoxide ( CO ), which quickly turns into CO2. In my tests around the lockdown, the week before, with 80,000 cars passing by, air quality was similar to what you are finding ( not much at all ). The week later, lockdown, no cars, but hot dry windless weather and air quality was far, far worse in the city centre ( Leeds ). If ever we have a hot dry, windless day, go have a check. Your premise is right tho, Ulez is nowt to do with air quality, else you would be measuring a lowering of pollution levels. What we both have found is there is no pollution to talk about in the first place. Keep going. Tho I suspect no one will ever listen to reason, data and findings. That would spoil their opportunity to make money from the motorist
Lorries reduce air quality by big amounts. I had to move from where the A1 and M62 crossed because, when there was a holdup several times a day, I had difficulty breathing; the fumes from the slow lorries was overwhelming. I was on the local emergency monitor list at my local surgery. When I moved to an East England village my breathing returned to just into normal, but the damage had been done.
Great vid - Khan would say you were standing amongst a load of paying polluting cars...yeh, thats it, sheer coincidence but there you have it. Then he would drop the mike...
Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce pollution by expanding the ULEZ to greater London is not working. He doesn’t really care about pollution and air quality and here is why: - He has already increased pollution and made London the slowest moving city in the world, it’s far worse now since he introduced the LTN’s which have increased pollution on the main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no other alternatives, especially during rush hour. The roads are now grid locked with traffic moving at walking pace and the fumes are getting denser and not dispersing because of it. LTN’s need to be reopened as it is causing more damage than good. Among all this, the mileage in vehicles has also increased due to the fact that we are forced to go the long way round to get to the required destination - all accumulating to even more emissions being emitted! Bravo Sadiq & team. (How can this be reducing pollution?!) - Pedestrians as they walk along these main routes to get to stations, schools, shops are inhaling far more fumes than before, you can really notice this. Even drivers inhale more fumes when we are stuck in stationary traffic. This is really aggravating and makes no sense! - Cycle Lanes: Should not be taking up an extra lane of the roads, large pavements could be divided into two for cyclists. - The introductions of 20MPH roads are also a big problem because emission fumes don’t disperse quickly and the air is getting even more polluted because of the need to drive in lower gears. (higher revs = more fumes) Sadiq’s statement: “It is to reduce toxic air pollution” is clearly not accurate, he has made matters far worse. It is obvious that his policies are just to clobber the motorist and to generate funds for TFL. The situation is getting extremely out of hand and something needs to be done to stop him from ruining our climate even more. He should resign and Londoners should vote for someone who will make London a greater and more desirable place to live in. There needs to be a more logical and strategic plan that is well thought out.

Here in Wales we’re six months into the 20mph fiasco, same as ULEZ absolutely no data to show how many lives/serious injuries have been saved thanks to the new limit. I suspect this is because there’s nothing to tell, if there was that would be the first thing you’d shout out loud to justify the speed reduction. It’s also supposed to save the Welsh NHS £92m a year, every year 🤔.
Would wind speed or the weather have any impact on the measurements? maybe also log the weather conditions temperature etc. Good idea to check though. Information from the existing government monitoring stations is available online
Well I'll have a heart attack an die from not surprise. :D The problem is you're not using the ULEZ approved meter with a GBC fitted (Government Bias Chip)
I was just wandering if you were going to do an update. I didn't realize it was 6 months since the first test. It just goes to show that kahnt was and still is telling lies about the 'pollution problems' in London.
After watching your first video it was obvious that ULEZ wasn’t about air quality. The money spent on it would have been far more beneficial going to improving the tube air quality.
Basically the heaviest polluters are planes, trains, lorries and buses. The war on personal cars has been won and every year the standard for tougher emissions ebs away at polluting engines, forcing them off the roads or improvements which shape engine design. Meanwhile, for Super Bowl Sunday, you're allowed to fly in on a private jet using the most harmful way possible. The same with local public transport and the transportation of goods. The motorist is relatively clean, the biggest issue is these other methods which need a massive overhaul - and electric buses or trucks are not cut out to sort the problem because of the mileage and weight to be carried.
Yes...but your data and videos have highlighted the fact that the ULEZ has been nothing but a stealth tax imposed on Londoners by Sadiq Khan and your good efforts has contributed significantly to the movement and campaign against ULEZ. You attend all the rallies and whether you like it or not people see you as a key figure campaigning against ULEZ.
I'm only trying to bring whatever info I can to a platform where people can access it. I remain merely a journalist, content creator and at most a commentator on all things to do with automotive. There are lots of amazing people who have been actively and more steadfastly campaigning against ULEZ.
It's rather intriguing that people are attacking you for presenting irrefutable evidence to highlight the extortion scheme called ULEZ. We appreciate your sterling work. The mayor who introduced the scheme is afraid of publishing data because it won't align with his narrative.
Better go to inner London and do the other part of the test see if there is improvement or its still the same. One thing about all this you better go green is the politicians do as I say not as I do because they all seem to drive around in V8 Range Rovers including the Prime Minister.
The air looks clean and fresh where you are. And the classic car only serves to improve the scenery The hot air emanating from the mouth of the mayor Ulez smells of verbal diarreah😂 In the Guardian today they announced à bullcrap study that says that LTNs have been à huge success have a look.
Brilliant video, thank you. I'm sure they'll argue the air temperature and perhaps relative humidity will affect the results. What we can be assured of is it's a money making scam.
A really good informative video which I sort of stumbled on by chance. I note some people are saying vote for the Conservative candidate to get Kahn out. I'll tell you now that wont achieve anything more than a rename or re brand of ULEZ. Think about it, who first introduced ULEZ? It was brought in before Khan.
I don’t want to cast aspersions but a one-off test is not at all conclusive. You’d need to have done multiple tests over several days or weeks before and after ULEZ to get a proper idea if there has been any aggregate change. Reason is that wind and weather affect the air quality significantly. Clearly these conditions change from day to day. No doubt someone else here has already pointed this out to you.
Absolutely correct. But the fact Khan and tfl also intentionally installed the air quality monitoring stations at known congested/busy areas, could also be argued to skew the results.
I hate YT so much. 90% of my comments don't make it. Air quality measuring stations installed at known congestion hotspots and busy areas could also be argued skew the results.
I would think that wind speed and direction would affect the data . i.e imagine a good breeze blowing directly from a major airport just a few miles away , or a traffic jam on the M25 for instance . You show an interesting snap shot , but it's the long term data that is more important IMO. I noticed a great comment below regarding the positive benefit and relative cost of planting more trees 🌿
ULEZ, 20mph zones, LTN zones and random one way street restrictions is creating longer & slower journeys for everyone which consequently use more energy. The exact opposite of its anti-pollution intent.
What settings do you use for iqair? I downloaded it out of curiosity on the strength of your video, I'm in rural argyll so no monitoring station near me apparently but the numbers it shows are vastly different to the data you showed, for example Brent Cross shows AQI 72, PM2.5 is 22.0 and PM10 shows as 73, ulez and any similar scams arw still a scam though
It's nice to see someone demonstrating some statistics and going back to back with it, I hope to see further testing as well to prove the clowns in the government wrong.
I live in inner London and have witnessed decrease in dirty diesel emissions since ulez started in inner London. Obviously we haven't got viable alternates to powering big vehicles except with diesel so are going to get pm2.5 and pm10 particles when bigger vehicles go past. I believe even the cleaner diesel belches out harmful pm 2.5 and 10 than we are led to believe. I want to live in a clean air city so I'm willing to make some sacrifice to achieve that. Small changes over time as the Mayor is doing and the change in technology will hopefully keep the air clean and reduce the amount of respiratory disease in London. There are many variables to your results. You need to measure over a longer time span for decent results.
You can’t do summer vs winter comparisons on air quality. Engines are cleaner at higher ambient temperatures. The change in quality when that train came past means you need a good sample size to get rid of the noise. I think you can do a 1 hour sample on those devices which will give you a better reading.
Well done mate this data should be shown to the people who put this thing in place Ha if they dont have this information already, its a money making scheme
People spend tens of thousands to upgrade to ULEZ vehicles. Also in six months, where would be more newer cars and older could would have been disposed. You also mentioned that it had rained in previous days, that also cleans up the air. So I suspect your numbers are much lower.
I think we all know it isn't about air quality. I'm a firm believer that air quality matters, it is an issue in cities, particularly with diesel particulates. It is a problem. But ULEZ is simply about revenue, almost every government environmental program is about revenue and not results.
I would say that you would or should do the air quality test during similar weather conditions ie wind speed and wind direction. This is very important. Other conditions such as cloud or mist or fog, or even temperature may be important too.
A lot of Central London has been turned into a 20mph zone. LTNs and other road restrictions. I suspect more traffic has been pushed out to outer London. Just look the junction at Bank station which was closed off to traffic, even taxis not allowed. Cheapside which is a road between Bank station and St. Paul, has been restricted to traffic. People look for alternative route, it pushes traffic outwards and it causes a rippled effect to outer London.

Pre EU3 vehicles fail on emmisions not because they are worse, they fail because NOx was not tested on its own before 2000.
yeah but who cares about accuracy and details. Let's all just get angry....SMH
Plus day of the week, calibration, the same lorry driving past... 6:22
@@Discovery_Dad this sort of backs up the fact the biggest drop in NOx was pre 2020.
Such a good idea to prove a point! More people should do this around London
Particulates in the air mainly come from tyres and brakes, so the ULEZ’s won’t have any real effect in reducing these airborne particles! Great video, thanks. Best wishes from the French Alps, Colin.
Edit: I am wrong.
A significant proportion come from brakes and tyres, but the majority come from Diesel engine emissions
@@incandescentwithrage No it doesn’t! Here’s an extract from the latest data on the gov.uk website:
Exhaust emissions have decreased markedly from 1996 to 2022 due to stricter emissions standards (decreased by 93 per cent for both PM2.5 and PM10).

The creator himself is pretty careful to state that these are not conclusive readings.
What a fantastic job, thanks for taking the time to do this. Over to you Sadiq.................
so as we all said at the time it has nothing to do with air quality, but all about raising tax for tfl, and the mayor getting cameras installed so he can charge EVERY vehicle pay per mile and control when and where you can drive
How do you know this is the case. Everything is screwy, but dont plug an idea that may not exist. If you believe in a lie, it could well become true!
@@paxford2 How do you know that it isn't going to be the case down the line 🤔
One and a half year after the introduction of the Clear Air Zone in Birmingham, I have done the same test and compared the statistics from the official government sites, the result was the same, there was no difference in the air quality between the Clear Air Zone and the surrounding areas. I have asked the question what happened to the revenue earned from the charges, how come the Air quality is not changed at all. The simple answer was that the wind is blowing bad Air from the surrounding areas into the city centre. I couldn't believe this.
What a corrupt answer from a corrupt government
Thank you for a great informative video BCG
Glad you enjoyed it
Shiek top work mate .
Another nicely put together video.Well it's obvious what ulez is about and it's not clean air.🐻🐵☺️👍

Great work bro….. keep it up
Great Work!👍
I really appreciate what you're doing here and the effort you've gone to. Air quality is significantly impacted by weather and movement of air masses and it wouldn't be right to draw any conclusions from readings made from a single day - or even a week. The Mayor of London's office should be releasing data, but I expect they're waiting to be able to make a year-on-year comparison.
Keep on keeping on BCG! Great work! 🙂
Brilliant video, thanks for the updates, these videos are priceless.
Kind request: please return the jingle at the start of the videos, it makes my day when I hear it. 😁

Excellent work, keep it up
Nice work
Drive out into rural Buckinghamshire, find open fields where free from obvious emissions and take your readings. Compare those readings to those obtained on North Circular Road next to Brent Council monitoring station.
I think you missed the point: ULEZ has not led to a reduction in air pollution, it’s simply been another revenue generator for the local authority.
Thank you Sir for your honest work👍
Fantastic work 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Keep it up
So all modern cars must have cheat devices on their emissions.
Good point, they lie about everything nowadays ….see “homogenised temperature data” in cLIEmate change 🤔
Many Many Thanks to you Brown Car Guy. Invaluable info

Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce pollution by expanding the ULEZ to greater
London is not working.
He doesn’t really care about pollution and air quality and here is
why:
- He has already increased pollution and made London the
slowest moving city in the world, it’s far worse now since he
introduced the LTN’s which have increased pollution on the
main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no
other alternatives, especially during rush hour. The roads are
now grid locked with traffic moving at walking pace and the
fumes are getting denser and not dispersing because of it.
LTN’s need to be reopened as it is causing more damage than
good.
Among all this, the mileage in vehicles has also increased due
to the fact that we are forced to go the long way round to get
to the required destination - all accumulating to even more
emissions being emitted! Bravo Sadiq & team. (How can this
be reducing pollution?!)
- Pedestrians as they walk along these main routes to get to
stations, schools, shops are inhaling far more fumes than
before, you can really notice this. Even drivers inhale more
fumes when we are stuck in stationary traffic. This is really
aggravating and makes no sense!
- Cycle Lanes: Should not be taking up an extra lane of the roads,
large pavements could be divided into two for cyclists.
- The introductions of 20MPH roads are also a big problem
because emission fumes don’t disperse quickly and the air is
getting even more polluted because of the need to drive in
lower gears. (higher revs = more fumes)
Sadiq’s statement: “It is to reduce toxic air pollution” is clearly not
accurate, he has made matters far worse. It is obvious that his
policies are just to clobber the motorist and to generate funds for
TFL. The situation is getting extremely out of hand and something
needs to be done to stop him from ruining our climate even more.
He should resign and Londoners should vote for someone who will
make London a greater and more desirable place to live in. There
needs to be a more logical and strategic plan that is well thought out.
Wouldn't driving an EV be cheaper?
😂😂😂 carful Sadiq might ban all cars next to get his figures down. But then again, how will he make ( sorry steel ) his money 😂😂😂
Steal!

He needs a lot of money to,pay over 100 of his mates on £100K plus a year then himself and all for achieving zero…

Is the anywhere the mayor of London can be arrested for obtaining money by deception?
🤣🤣🤣
And the classic car only serves to improve the scenery
The hot air emanating from the mouth of the mayor Ulez smells of verbal diarreah😂
In the Guardian today they announced à bullcrap study that says that LTNs have been à huge success have a look.
Brilliant video, thank you. I'm sure they'll argue the air temperature and perhaps relative humidity will affect the results. What we can be assured of is it's a money making scam.
Good video👍🏼
Gotta say very fair test 👏
A really good informative video which I sort of stumbled on by chance.
I note some people are saying vote for the Conservative candidate to get Kahn out. I'll tell you now that wont achieve anything more than a rename or re brand of ULEZ. Think about it, who first introduced ULEZ? It was brought in before Khan.
he has claimed its the cleanest air ever and crowing about it with no data to support his claims
I pointed this out myself at the end of the video.
Have you noticed that the tfl radio adverts have tacked on "zero emissions at the tailpipe" to their 'Zero emissions buses' promos.
ULEZ, 20mph zones, LTN zones and random one way street restrictions is creating longer & slower journeys for everyone which consequently use more energy. The exact opposite of its anti-pollution intent.
Nice. I like what you’re doing. Your BMW is also very nice. It’s not brown though 🤔
😂
What settings do you use for iqair? I downloaded it out of curiosity on the strength of your video, I'm in rural argyll so no monitoring station near me apparently but the numbers it shows are vastly different to the data you showed, for example Brent Cross shows AQI 72, PM2.5 is 22.0 and PM10 shows as 73, ulez and any similar scams arw still a scam though
Live updates so would show different data. Though that’s a bit high 😲
It's nice to see someone demonstrating some statistics and going back to back with it, I hope to see further testing as well to prove the clowns in the government wrong.
There's a couple studies already released online from Europe showing there is no significant difference in air quality in these areas
Do you have the links for those please?
Surely this kind of data should be freely available as it is in the public interest.
It is - aqicn.org/city/london/
I know what you meant though!
Still more than acceptable results. if 50 is the bench mark
I said from the very beginning it was all a "Con Job".
Your data would seem to confirm that (O;
