I've recently made it over 100k views and wanted to thank everyone for watching. To answer some of your questions: The dimentions are 48"L x 24"D x 24"H, and Tequila uses every inch of it. My materials include 1/2" birch veneer plywood, stain, varnish, styrofoam, silicone glue, grout, acrylic paint, and acrylic sealer. Everything can be found at a home reno store. I.e. Home Depot, Lowes, etc. It is still in good condition 3 years later, with the exception of a few chips and a couple areas Tequila has dug through. I should have done more layers of Grout. I don't use a substrate for this terrarium for a couple reasons. One, it is better for their health (no dust causing respiratory issues, no risk of impaction, nothing for parasites and pests to bury in.) Two, most sand substrates dye the reptiles belly, and i hate that. Three, she only poops in her bath, so I don't need a substrate to keep it clean. Four, I designed the terarrium with a bottom so I wouldnt need a substrate.
I can clearly see your love and passion for reptiles and take care in what you do for them. I can only say how amazed I am at your structure and just WOW. I have run out of words, love this!
Thank goodness the cat was there to supervise, because clearly you weren't qualified to complete such an undertaking without sufficient guidance from our feline overlords. (Nice job, BTW)
0:21 cat was thinking "I love it, I love it, I love it. this is the biggest cat litter tray in the world 2:07 okayyy where's my litter? This is really cool looking den it's so good looks like one of them Indiana Jones movies caves. Great job!
That's awesome! Your cat was looking like where are you gonna start building mine, human. I need to build something like this for my tarantulas, on a much smaller scale.
I would also recommend GEll Silicone or some other foam safe glue. I started work on this in mid January, and finished around the beginning of March. I worked on it off and on for a few hours every few days. I purchase my items from a number of different hardware stores. Home Depot, Lowes, and Home Hardware. The plants were dollar store buys. :)
It is very easy to clean, then again Tequila is a very clean beardie. A damp cloth once a month, and the occasional vacuuming are the only cleaning I have to do. Tequila only poops in her bath. One of these days I will get to an update video, and a step by step. I have had tons of requests to build these to sell. As much as I'd love to, I dont have the time or space to do so. Also for something similar it would sell for more than $2000. Tequila doesnt just eat insects. Actually, now that shes mature she gets mostly fresh greens like Collard, Kale, chicory, as well as other fruits and vegetables. She still loves her bugs tho, particularily her Hornworms.
***** on what grounds do you say that? She's now three years old and incredibly healthy. She's always pooped only when she gets her bath. Its a normal function for a lot of reptiles from arid regions. They hold it in until there is an abundance of water to prevent dehydration. She gets baths 2-3 times a week. So its not like shes holding it for weeks.
Thank you. Nice work. It's giving me inspiration to work on something similar. I have a purchased tank and I am trying to come up with a way to do this without touching the sides and seams inside the tank. I'll work something out. You did an excellent job.
That's an amazing setup. I always worry about the heat-safety of materials I use in the tank, particularly in the basking area. I'm concerned that paint might emit fumes under high temperatures and stuff like that. But I tend to over-worry.
It's regular polystyrene foam. The same kind typically used in commercial packing for electronics and other breakables. You can usually find more dense sheets of foam insulation at home reno stores that work quite well too. I scavenged what I could from packaging, and then bought the sheets for lager sections I wanted to do.
She does indeed. Altho she's done a number in a couple of spots with some intensive digging, for the most part the entire viv is holding up well. Considering it's the first one I've ever built I'm amazed. Definitely room for improvement tho.
Well i think you did an amazing job. Puting that much work into giving your beardie such a great enclosure. I would suggest using different color paints to lifen it up int there and really give it a dynamic outdoor feel. Thanks so much with the feedback. good job!
looks very interesting land good craftsmen ideas. also for the Bearded Dragon .I use some thick branches . half round bark .anything works . I found when I put new bark ect in .they sniff it. lick toung on new items . Keith Australia
Yeah. I watered down modpodge and applies it with a spray bottle, then sealed it with a outdoor spray varnish. Modpodge give it strength, the varnish makes it waterproof and uv resistant.
The grout and sealing does protect it from the wear and tear of the beardies nails. However, if they decide they want to dig through it they can, and will. There's 2 spots that my beardie has dug through the grout and foam to the wood exterior walls. Fortunately she's done it where it's not visible.
That is so dang cool excellent construction! I bet your beardie loves it more than you do :) All I gotta say is that is amazing work I absolutely love seeing people making their own custom cages, it's truly an art form and you have it down to a "T" :)
Very nice enclosure! I am about to start making my own and this has given me some great ideas. Hopefully when I am done I will remember to post a response video. Thanks for the great advice as well.
This is sooooo dope! Quick question when you clean it will the paint and stuff come off cause when he/she goes number two just in general you gotta clean the tank right?
Its great! Until they take a poo anywhere in there. Horrible to wash lol I built one for mine and it ended up in the garbage because she had a runny one one day and it ended up in all the cracks and crevices... It is awesome looking though! When I build a new one, I will make sure the inside has pieces I can get out easily to wash them instead of a whole set up like I did before
I had a couple of questions - Won't/Didn't the foam elements break-off or simply start breaking apart after the Beardy grows heavier? Also, doesn't the foam start emitting anything toxic after getting heated up so regularily by the lamps?
depends if you mix the grout right it shouldn't but when i grout i cover everything in 2-3 layers with layers of sealant in between. the foam is non toxic unless it is melted to the point it become vapor. which it has to hit its liquid form first and that won't happen in a viv like this, otherwise ill say the lizard will die to heat before the foam turns liquid then vapor
nice terrarium. this is badass. i just made one. i am on second coat of grout right now. yours is alot better. this is my first but it did turn out real well. its for leopard geckos
Just wondering what colour grout you used to make it turn that shade of orange, also the brand of main grout you used in the beginning. I've tried so many brands and each haven't held up for long, or as neat.
You need to expand your horizons my friend. I'm Canadian and up here it is spelled C-O-L-O-U-R. We also put a U in "Honour", "Arbour", "Behaviour", and many others. So simply put, you are right, it was no accident. However it isn't wrong, just different.
How'd the grout react to the heat lamp? I did this with styrofoam, grout with a sealer and it cracked and heated up way to hot 😒 the heat lamp was about 8 inches away from it.... is that too close? I have a 50 gallon terrarium that I made. Please help
How well has the foam background held up over time? I made a background similar to what you have done and after mine got to be able a year or so old they were so big they just destroyed it. It was my first time working with grout so I could have made the layer too thin. I have been weary of trying to make a new one.
It's holding up quite well actually with a few exceptions. Beardies like to dig and mine is no different. She dug through the wall inside her cave right to the wood wall, and she dug a hole behind the "stairs" too. She did that in the first year, but since then hasn't caused any more damage. The only other damage was caused when the clip holding up the heat lamp pulled out. The heat melted a hole in the foam on the floor.

Perfect area. I love it. My beardie, Burt looks almost exactly like yours. Beautiful colors on the lizard. And amazing job on the vivarium.
That’s some unbelievable work you did there. Just plain awesome. Great job!!!!!
I love how the cat periodically peeks in to supervise your work.
+Jassy It was actually very difficult to keep him out of it. I frequently had to clean up dirty paw marks from either the grout or paint....
cat: "fuck that, i wanna live in there"
awesome job you got an eye for detail, i bet your beardie loves what you made for him/her.
That's awesome! Your cat was looking like where are you gonna start building mine, human. I need to build something like this for my tarantulas, on a much smaller scale.

Wow !! That's bad ass !! Very inspired
Wow beautiful work mate!
Lol I would absolutely love to visit New Zealand, altho I don't think I'd have time to be a tourist AND build a viv :P I'm glad you like it.
OMG!! THAT IS BEAUTIFUL. I love it. :) u have inspired me for when I adopt my bearded dragon. :) :)
I'm not sure about how the cat felt about that, hmmmm I'm just not sure is all I'm saying LOL
I wish my bearded dragons cage was that cool!

i bet your beardie loves it
nice work , looks great
that is amazing best cage I have ever seen what did you use to make fake rocks? I must know
I did seal it, twice. Once with an acrylic sealer, and then with a marine varnish that was UV and water resistant.
awesome job. I love it !!

I gotta say that is the coolest viv i have seen!! awesome job!
That is soooo awesome!!!
COOLEST VIV EVER!!!!!!!!
Looks fantastic, but it must be a nightmare to clean
No, its not that bad. I guess Lazyness wins for you.

So you just painted over the foam? I didn't know if I understood that correctly
Thats one lucky Beardie
