The Road To Becoming A Graphic Designer

- Just wanna share my college experience. I'm a very strict, go-by-the-book person but usually designers /artists are portrayed as the opposite. So I wanted to share what it was like for me. Who would've thought kpop fanfictions would change everything! But it's kinda sad that most of the groups I listened to back then are all gone now. Things don't feel the same way and even my taste in music has changed but I won't forget the good times 😭
Personally, I feel like that award was the perfect closure to my college life/experience. It helped me acknowledge myself in the arts field. But now I'm beginning to question my lecturers' eyesight because the designs I submitted back then was definitely not "Best Student" worthy 😂
Question : Is it necessary to go to college?
In my opinion, yes.
Other than your degree or diploma that'll give you more opportunities or a sense of security, going to college is a very unique learning experience. We're talking about a period that is purely dedicated to studying. Trust me, it's definitely gonna be fruitful.
It is possible to learn as you work but it'll be very slow paced and you'll be missing out on a lot of things.
Take this channel as an example. The videos I make here and what I do at work are completely different. Everything is self taught. I wish I had my first few videos on this channel so y'all can see how bad the visuals used to be. And I learned everything through each video I made. I wish I had time to actually learn animation, drawing, video editing etc but because of my schedule I have to rely on learning through each video. And because of that I also have to find my way around these things that I lack expertise in. All in all, it's a very slow process.
Did I make any sense?😂
I wonder if any of y'all are now interested in Graphic Design 😆

Best way to find your career: fanfic.
Ah yes, fan fics, everyone’s true love, the one thing that will never betray us.
“If Jesus can help so can you”
“And look what happens to him”
That quote is the best 😂
Edit: I’ve been noticed 0_0
Lol
I agree!!! I was just about to comment that XD
Same. It made me laugh a lot 😂😂😂
You mean Asahi
"I'm 22"
*spits tea* NANI!?
Oh my god, I don't have my glasses on at the moment and I read the title on the notification quickly so I read the title as "The Road to Becoming a GANGSTER" lmfao
OHAHSH

10 simple steps to become a Graphic designer
Wheelchair Bois: _Alright, you got us here_
"Steps" but ppl in wheelchairs cant walk any steps.. 😂 took me a second too lol
reminds me of joe swanson---
"Forget the world, I can show you the universe." JOSH YOU ARE THE BEST LOL
"if Jesus can help, so can you!"
.
"and look what happened to him"
Gold
the bad thing about being a little early is that there is no fun comments to read
“If Jesus can help so can you”
“And look what happens to him”
I’m crying X’D
Random guy: if jesus can help, so can you.
Josh: and look what happened to him
(Edit: omg thank u 4 all thw likes)❤
I take a graphic design class this year. I'm a freshman. PRAY FOR ME KIDS
The reason I want to become a writer is because of kpop fanfictions...
Fanfic is really the BEST way to find your career. I work part time as a translator and editor and all of this happened because my friend decided to read a Haikyuu fanfic but she doesn't know English. So I translated it to her and she loved it, then she introduced me to her uncle who was an English Literature professor in a university, and I started working as a translator for other lecturers in other faculties, and then he introduced me to a publishing house and now I work as part of the editorial team. So, yeah... I'm rambling like an idiot, but..
FANFICTION IS LIFE!
In my opinion
Artists...
Are not weak
Sure some of us miaght be having a mental breakdown but..
Ok wait
Artists aren't weak because we are the ones who normally survive the trials of life
First of all
We know how to take criticism-
(OK. Sure SOME might but not all of them)-whether its about art or us
We use others opinions(acceptable opinions only!) about bad things about us to work on them and try to improve and the good opinions, well we continue showing them and making them even better
Just like in art!
Second- Change
You know those times your art style changes to fit you more?
Well like in life, instead of art,its the environment
For example,we move out of our house
It might take time but we will get used to it
Of course we might not like it and feel like its not meant to be but CHILL
Life'll go on and you'll know this is for you
Third-
We are creative
I mean...
We can think of ways to do art in ways other people can't!
We can use that in daily routines
Like trying to hide doujinshis from your parents under inside your pillowcase
4th
We're strong
DAMN strong
Sleepless nights
Restless moments
Leaps of faith
We can do anything!!!
Well this is an opinion of a 9 year old kid
Thia is the internet
My opinion isn't respected here and if you actually read the whole thing
Comment my age
Thanks for reading people... I mean humans of the internet
I hope I expressed my point clearly
MY PHONE IS LAGGING
Nyoronemu hey, it's fine, you just act more mature, also your optimistic which is a great trait to have!
I read kpop fanfics every freaking day. My gallery has more fanarts than my selfies. Freshly out of high school science(bio) stream. I applied for graphic design major which I heard about like 2_3 months ago. Came across this while searching materials to write personal essay about why I choose this major. I ❤️ the video.
*casually has a BL box in the corner of room saying do not touch*
I'm still figuring out what I want to study in the future and knowing that something so simple as Fanfiction could motivate you makes me worry less. Thanks Josh, and awesome video.
**When you're 30 minutes late because you were being a good fudanshi and reading your daily dose of yaoi*

Hey you are a fudanshi?!! Sorry i just have never seen a fudanshi irl

I'm so happy this came up in my recommendations because I literally started graphic design through not only fanfictions but roleplay as well. I get so embarrassed to show my work because that's where they rooted from! There are many times where I've felt as if this is a really stupid idea, thinking I can become a graphic designer for some anime edits. This video, however, gives me hope. Thank you so much.
Omg I'm also studying graphic design and I'm not really confident with my work and the reason I was interested in this job was cause of anime😂/i was a good student so my parents are really against it they wanted me to become an architect/ dude the money I've spent for the stupid assignments .../this video kinda helped me chill for a bit and think "see, you can do it too" but ye that positive thinking doesn't last for too long
Anyway thanks for the video its accurate af👌👌
This video is really informative, i am also confused on what to do as a career
Like i am a decently good student, but i am also on the artsy side, and people seem to have this you can't make artsy things your job😅
Oh my God I am not good at graphic design or drawing I’m only good at typing Yaoi fanfiction so I guess I could kinda relate
At least you can get good grades:D im a C student and shy im kinda scared to not get in the university i want (graphic design), but i can draw. Oof i have to try 3 times at least to get in one of them xD
I’m so glad you uploaded again yay 😃
Omg I never knew about Graphic Design until after I read a manwha last year called A Guy Like You and now my career pathway is following into Graphic Design
I too went into graphic design and died inside when I found out I'd have to create handmade assignments
The best thing k pop fanfics ever done
You give me some motivation to study hard to be graphic design
I got into writing because of Maria Holic fanfics
I am currently in Highschool and my dream job is to become a graphic designer but I don't have the money for Photoshop and illustrator. Does anyone have any programs I could use?
Zombling I don’t know if you use InDesign, but one program you could use similar to it is Lucidpress, a free publishing website. For it’s premium version, you would have to pay.
I know this sounds strange, but PowerPoint is actually really useful, for creativity and calligraphy.
Firealpaca
Gimp or Inkscape, the latter one is for vector graphics
Use Giphy
Where r the U-KISS Kiss U at!!! Wow never wouldve thought kpop fanfics contributed to your current career and also I'm a Super Junior ELF. Also I feel you, when members start leaving and members getting married you wonder where did the time went
Omg you posted and I’m early
I love your channel♥️
it's funny because I thought of doing graphic design when I am older as a career
Wow what a coincidence! I'm actually taking Graphic design classes. And I started just a few days ago! Really now I'm more into the GD. And wanna do more in it. Even though I have no idea about it. By the way I learning GD because I wanna learn animation and they said that u have to learn basic first that's why I'm taking GD classes.
Thank you for inspiring me! I'm trying to decide what I wanna do with my future, and you just helped encourage it. Thank you a lot!
yess the queen uploaded
Finally you made a vid thanks for the vid luv it
5:00 my parents told me the exact! same! thing! So I ended up going into Architecture (got persuaded) without knowing anything about it, because apparently, it has better job prospects, better pay, etc. and I regret it. It's not like I hate architecture, I just don't think it's the job for me (can't count how many times I cried working on my assignments). So now I'm just trying my best to learn everything I can about graphic design online because switching majors now would cost more time and money *sighs*
Just hoping that my dream of becoming a freelance graphic designer will come true one day..
I really love your videos. You do them so well.
omg I clicked as soon as I saw the notification because you finally posted :)) and the video is really informative and I'll definitely recommend it to my friend because she wants to be a graphic designer too
feel excited to watch your next video😍
Thank you for sharing. You’re awesome ❤️
Thanks for the video! I am currently studying to become a graphic designer myself so it was nice to have a look in to your journey to become a graphic designer.
Thank you for this! You helped out a confused kid today 💛
i love you i love you you are very underrated
Oh gosh, this video makes me feel so happy. My experience was pretty much the exact same as yours-being good at science with no art background yet still pursuing design... I'm glad I'm not the only one going into design school a noob!
I think it's great how you decided to do what you are passionate about. I'm sure you would've been able to pass medical school with flying colors or any course with your smarts, but us fans are always glad to watch graphic-designer-Josh's videos.
Keep up the good work! ^-^ I would love to read some of your old fanfiction as well ;)
They're so cringy...trust me, you don't wanna
im so invested in your stories and i gotta say our story is so alike, starting from fanfictions and writing your own lol and im just a year younger than you. i wished i found your channel sooner because damn im really late in realising architecture aint my path....................i took a degree in degree of architecture and i really dont wanna work as architect.................i want graphic design but im really afraid in applying to any companies bc when i studied architecture i really abandon my graphic skills now its kinda blunt :')
Josh!!!I missed you 💕💕💕 lol I loved your video. The way you felt while taking classes is how I felt taking figure drawing for the first time. That was literally the only art class that made me sob so hard cuz there were people in the class drawing Professional ass pictures. Mind you this was a beginner class!!!
Finally u update 😭😭😭😭 i've watch ur video countless time and wonder when will u upload
nani straight A's take an art .Literally me with Spm.I just love science maybe because of biology and⁄(⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)⁄maybe we learn about human body and something...Like just said that I love to learn by drawing, but want it related with add math,it's kind of sucks.
Really can related it with my life😂😂
why is your story so relatable🥺🥺. Thanks for this awesome video. I also keep having small conflicts with my parents because of our different opinions about my future but your video motivated me to keep chasing my dreams rather than just pleasing my parents and people around me. Thank you very much.🙇♀️🙇♀️
I'm twelve and I just gave up on trying to please my parents so instead of being a lawyer, I want to be a graphic designer
Yay
You finally posted 😌😊
Yass you’re back 🌸🖤🥺
Oh wow.
Hello!! Love your videos!!!!
This is a really interesting video to me since I am still in school but I was thanking about becoming a Graphic Designer I still do want that but have found out that ther ar no colleges who focus on subjects such as art and I would have to move away quite a bit from my family and at the age I am now im not confident that I wuld even get to such a college since it does take quite good grades to get ther wich I certainly do not have. I have my strong points like English but also a lot of weak points like Mathematics so im not certan I have what it takes.
Funny thing tho I WAS the artsy kid, skipped clases, got a couple big jobs in ilustrating books, was absulte trash did fanart and comissions and headers for hard M fics, and my parents pushed me to go for design and visual arts AND I HATED IT. I droped it in secret and enrolled in medical school and lied to them for a year and 3 months ish till they found out almost ruined our relationships, rip trust everything. I graduated, became a seemingly respectable put together adult I kept drawing but mostly for presentations and papers in my field and I alsoread fanfiction during slow ER duty while everyone else believes Im reading papers and guidelines. btw I absolutely ADORE you're channel, you're a gift to the world
Yay u posted
I have always took interest in anime and drawing, I had no clue that manga was a thing. My parents would try to hint me about how I can be the next Eisenstein with my Science knowledge, but I never ACTUALLY enjoyed it.
IF ONLY THE DR. STONE ANIME EXISTED-
Love the video
this is so relatable...
This video is so relatable that I feel personally attacked.
Great video though!
Wait......
Josh lives in Malaysia?!
Omg hey your finally back . I hope your doing good
I love your videos
After my highschool (ill be about fifteen) Im going to *het grafisch lyceum* and become a graphic designer! This is my dream job tbh!
This video makes me conteplate what I wanna do with my life because graphic design sounds so fun and I really like editing videos images and also drawing but I also have so many other stuff I wanna do and just...AH
3 mins in, K-Pop fan fiction helped you become a graphic designer? Well, this is going to be interesting
😂 the magic conch
After some time
FINALLLY
yeah i was kicked to the science stream class too because of my grades. there were times when the art teachers would hold art seminars and i couldn't join because i'm from the science stream. Yes the struggle is real. I took graphic design too but unlike you I know nothing about it when I enter university. I just entered because I wanna escape whatever it is thats science and indulge in something that at least has a little bit of art. I originally applied for game design and animation too but no luck. Most of the interviewers said I should pursue fine art when they look at my drawings but I'm not really interested at it. I have no problems with Malay and English but there were times where I had to translate my posters into Chinese too. I always triple checked the translations with a chinese friend before submitting though.. all the best to you in the future.
You where soo lucky that you could change your course because I didn't get into art long after I picked my options for GCSE's. Also I relate to not think you where not good enough ad while I have only met one artist I am concerned that the other students will be big brain artists.
Happy late birthday!
Hi Josh. May you make a video about your animation process and experience? This is really good quality. I want to know how you do it. And why too.
Struggling with one’s insecurities about worth in art skills is stressful/depressing. I’m taking a graphic design class and doing an internship for high school. I want to be a graphic designer in the future, at least I think I do, but I fear that I may be not good enough to become one. I know it’s a long process to build your art skills, but I can’t help but feel stressed about not pleasing my clients or experiencing harsh criticism.
TaylorVonHellsing 6379 that’s an important concern. But don’t keep yourself lock from showing how you use the image to communicate. I mean, I’m about to graduate from the career and sometimes I decline works because I’m insecure about my results, despite of people telling me I’m good at it, but I’m always thinking I don’t know how to draw or use illustrator (I can use it, just not for illustrate, I’m bad at it) but graphic design it’s not all about knowing an skill, it is about how to find the most right way to create communication from the image, no matter how this image materialise (well, it matters, but there is not a definitive answer, just more effective ones). Later you may realise you have skills that you can improve and feel comfortable with them and find others that may complement the ones you lack and both can create something spectacular. The important thing, at least to have a nice result, is to enriching your mind with knowledge and culture from art, history, graphic designers and a lot of other fields that may no be directed related, but enrich your creativeness. Don’t shut yourself, a bright mind will always find a way to materialise their ideas, even without master all the art skills. Design goes beyond all that.
@@sere_amarilla Thanks! 😀👍🏻
Awesome!!

I MISSED YOU!!!!!
We're currently in an era where Technology advancements and innovations takes centre stage.
I'm not sure if parents are aware about industry 4.0. Jobs like in the medical profession and other 'secure' jobs are getting less prioritize in the coming years. Heck, some jobs now doesn't include a pension!
Could you imagine? Those who dedicated their services for years and suddenly the bomb drops saying that you won't receive any pension after 60???
I had a classmate who was pressured into taking 'Pendidikan' for her degree after spending 3 years in Graphics course because her parents insisted that she should become a teacher because they had that old mindset thinking it would be a secure job. She had an artsy background like me and she acknowledged that her strength was in arts and animation. She wasn't a book smarts type. It bothered me when she messaged me incredibly upset that she had no say in what she decides to do in her future.
My parents want me to become an ARCHITECT and I want to study MUSICAL PRODUCTION and they are finding ways to convince me to not choose that, so I feel you bro, I hope I get to be successful on it, I always liked music
I’m 11 and I’ve been doing art since around the end of last year I really want to become an artist when I grow up
I'm majoring in graphic design too ❤
I’m current studying in graphic design at college and I honestly think I kinda got into graphic design because of Kpop (and other smaller reasons). I was in a GD program in high school and we mainly only did logos and photoshop images and made gifs and I found that I really enjoyed it. I also was into anime, Kpop, and punk rock bands at the time. In my mind I knew that I loved Kpop and the bands logos and I thought that I would want to grow up and make logos for bands as a living and even maybe design posters. At the time I didn’t really know what GD was and that it wasn’t only logos and posters. I knew what I wanted to go to college for and I kept with it because I now know what GD actually is and how fun designing different things can be. I’m still a Kpop fans de like anime (I don’t follow it as strong and I’m not hardcore about it) and I still think it’d be cool to design for a band but I’m more realistic now and know that I’ll probably design normal things like menus, packaging, books, etc. Lol
Sorry for the rant btw, I’m just excited because I’ve never met someone who liked Graphic Design and like Kpop and anime and stuff.
SAME!! When I first joined the course, all that logo design, packaging stuff scared me and kinda felt boring? I just liked designing posters. But the more I learned about it + all the marketing stuff, working with different departments and all, the more I started to enjoy it 😄
This is so inspiring... my dream job is anything related to arts ever since I was in elementary... I love painting and drawing (tho I'm not that good at it)... but unfortunately I don't have the guts to tell my parents... and ever since I was a baby they already decided I need to be part of the medical field...that's why on the upcoming school year I will be talking my premed😔... wish me luck guys😔😔😔
Dude this is exaCTLY what i wanna do oml bit iam like not sure if i really need to go to college to become a graphik designer :((
So I’m a second year in Graphic design. The first year was great. I got a few A’s. - second year was a hell hole. If you don’t have a big personality- boom! You get irrelevant and the teachers don’t give a shit about you. The third year is about to start and I am so so unmotivated since we have a lot of big personality’s in my class; so I get overlooked easily and I don’t want to be irrelevant xD I have an art background BUT THAT DOES NOT HELP!!
I take nat 5 graphics and I luv it.
Late October people and November born people be Scorpios, and they be great in bed 😏😏
👌🤣
Are we siblings? 😂 It's like your parents is like mine. I have this artsy-feels within me and I want to pursue multimedia art but my Mom and Grandma is telling me to get nurse or doctor. But I have this feels in technology too so I set my mind focusing in Computer Engineer tho I really want to go inside the art world. :""
All I can say is "Do what you wanna do" 👍
How are you one year older than me?! And you have a job while I’m still stuck in school!.
?
I enrolled as soon as my results were out. Before I even turned officially 18...so maybe that's why 😅
The feeling feels like shock. Maybe a mix of insecurity.
It's the same in India
But 3 streams
Science, commerce and arts
This is interesting. Accounting and economics are considered STEM (science, technology, engineering math) by the academic community in most nations. For example, if you study abroad in the US, Canada, and (most) Europe if you study accounting and/or economics immigration status is enhanced because your degree is considered a STEM. The exact details depends on the territory/state, but overall such majors and can not only care a legal status of sciences, they also carry addition privileges.
I was insecure about my art work as well because I would always compare my art pieces to my friends' work(because my Leo pride). But I felt such accomplishment when my drawing of Maya Angelo (which I free draw against my teacher's instructions) got 3rd place in a Silent Auction at school.
I was born in 1997 and I turned 22 this year and I'm a psychology major still living with my parents and no working experience.......😶
You'll get there soon 😄
I love reading too and I want to be a writer but my family needs a doctor in the family so I’ll probably go and get a medical degree and then become a writer. Btw I’m good at making fictional worlds in books so, sorry dude.😅
Edit: I love drawing and art too.
Thank goodness I am not the only one who found a career because of fanfictions😂😂 I literally became a Self-Published Author because I used to be a fanfiction writer😂 Enormously happy with my decision tho!
I've take a course on graphic design. I would be certified but my school cheaped me out and will not certify me because corona despite passing the class.
I would have also been certified for web design and coding
