I imagine we would've gotten Sweet Tooth and Calypso in Smash as of right now if it was the case, and i'm sure Mario and Luigi would appear as a secret character in TM. (same thing goes to the TM characters in Mario Kart).
I have never played this one before but I'll say this a lot of people don't get the fact that this one was meant to be a twisted metal for a younger audience
One of my last PS1 games along with Spongebob Supersponge and Mega Man X6. 2002... more people were getting PS2s and DVD players. I was in 6th grade, going into 7th. The world was healing from 9/11. It was an unsure time, but still a fun one! I remember sneaking into the Jackass movie after ditching The Ring.
Quite an interesting selection and priority you have there,. I can see why. Personally I think: 1. TMB, like your choice,, the best due to the competitive gameplay design, dedicated online (it lasted more than 10 years and even has a homebrew server) and the excellentl level of effort put into it: specials, weapon variation, thematic, graphical presentation and giving Needles Kane his killer clown look the best its ever been, being fully dynamic, excellent 60 framerate and low latency input and a great lighting system. The only niggle is that a majority of its soundtrack isn't truly metal based but NiN (Nine Inch Nails) inspired and it lacks colour theory but otherwise, it's hefty on cutscenes and story, great car selection, varied levels which range from large enough so all vehicles can excel at what they do. If this had ever became a PC game, TMB would've had an SDK kit (Marltoro is making one for TM2PC) and would've been the greatest car combat game of all time if not considered the now. I could go on but the other TMS need judgement. 3. TM2 because it is and was the game that showcased so many improvements to the formula of Twisted Metal, too numerous to mention. This jump in quality was amazing and Pinnacle Group (the artists behind that heavenly soundtrack for the game) should be awarded for it alone, any time I hear the Main Menu or Quake Zone Rumble, I think Twisted Metal. David Jaffe himself says that this his favourite TM and it is very clear why. The PC version however is also great due to being the first proper port to Windows and it had a lot of support for graphical accelerators (GPUs) and input devices. Oh and it was online from LAN to Modem Internet (before UDP, it used IPX protocols). 3. Rogue Trip, strictly speaking not a Twisted Metal game plays similarly to it and adds an objective system twisted as well as being goofy and dark. The money system was a subtle touch and the mini-games were a lot of fun to play. The soundtrack was also the dog's bollocks (the best) and I seriously hope there is a sequel for the Rogue Trip Vacation 2012 entry, it really, really deserves it. 4. 2012 due to significantly improved presentation because of the artist team behind it being proficient in their field. A massive improvment to the special system and weapons/damage system (except the missiles, which tracked a _bit too much_ )giving the game a major boost in depth and strategy. But it is seriously lacking in vehicles and the storyline was quite poor. If only it had more vehicles and less focus on the individuals and more on the tournament. Sony fucked Jaffe over and I find that infuriating beyond words if it weren't for their bullshit, the game would've ourivalled TM2 and matched TMB. 5. Small Brawl for opening the demographics to a younger audience (more exposure and $$$) and the game had a jovial, fun aspect to it not seen before, showing TM can be for everyone without losing its soul or appeal. It's a reminder that experimentation of your own series into something else is worth trying always. 6. TM1, the diamond in the rough has quite a few conventions I like to appreciate. Good soundtrack (though less Twisted Metal and more Hillbilly Metal), atmosphere, tone and levels/vehicles other than that, it's a slow, sluggish first entry with really bad frame-pacing, controls and lacklustre endings. The Japanese only release (on one of my playlists) is a slight improvement but the AI is ridiculously hard (Darkside now freezes with his Special) and the first time TM has basic LAN support. 7. Twisted Metal 4 at least 989 studios attempted to be original here and added a lot of content, some of which I played more over the "third game". Calypso being playable was a neat touch. The strange "twisted" versions of non-boss cars being bosses was unusual yet engaging. Sadly, it suffers from flanderization of its drivers. 8. Twisted Metal 3 at least continued the World Tour concpet and had decent physics at the time as well as co-op. Penultimately the worst because of the vehicle controls and handling are beyond some of the worst I've ever played. The artificial intelligence provides little actual challenge and generally wonders braindead into obvious mines and traps. The endings are so woefully infantile I am lead to believe one of their staff separate from Jaffe's crew is a sociopath. 9. You'll bite my arse off for this one but T wisted Metal Head On (PSP and PS2) is by far my critical choice for being the wost TM concieved for doing nothing to rejuvenate the franchise, comically missing the point of it being "metal" (majority of the songs were NOT metal) and poorer sound design that doesn't even fit the TM2 feel, lacking any challenge (once you get upgrades, the game is easier than Small Brawl on medium bare that one in mind), the challenge portals (not fun) the endings ask more questions than answer them, the fact *Twisted Metal Hed On is the reason Harbor City was cancelled due to Sony not having the full original crew at the time*. The PlayStation 2 port was inexusably poor with innumerous glitches out and providing no real attempt to graphically upgrade its texture resolution and polygonal count. Twisted Metal Lost was merely a diversion so 2012 could get made. Honestly, I was very shocked when I found that this was the work of the original team.
I haven't heard a lot of good things about Small Brawl, but it'd be good if you were REALLY into the franchise and wanted to see if your kids might be interested later on.
Small Brawl was alright. Plays alot like 3 and 4. Easiest game of franchise to introduce a newer player, so for that reason alone I would recommend it first to any new player looking to get into the series. Definitely a better game than 2012.
When I was a child my family went to a chinese restaurant that had a PS1 obviosuly so us kids wouldnt be a pain in the ass and they had this game and it was so addictive and fun.
+lolkiu64 because axel was not hurt its only offensive if he is hurt and also they did not have the time to remove axel since they had a due date to get the game out for sale.
I remember axel and darkside having drivers but i understand axel ending was cut due to being offensive but for darkside...what happened to the driver?
I remember this game. This version figure of twisted metal are so adorable of their sizes as RC, but it's too bad the entire neighborhood had to go up and smoke. Small, but .... STILL THRILL, set it all up like a GRILL 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
0:01Sonja: Aww, my baby daughter. Alister: Uh, Sonja? Sonja: Huh? (Got punched by Billy Calypso) Sloane (Baby): WAAAH! Billy Calypso: If you ever wanna see your baby lombax again, you gotta play my *game.*
Sparky 111000 Axel. His wish was the ability to walk. So Calypso gave him a pair of robotic legs. Downside; HE Controlled it and forced Axel to walk on rakes, making them hit him(a la Sideshow Bob)
The bully name Billy calypso who forced everyone one to play his game call small brawl like said whoever car not smashed win and get awarded by Billy calypso
If Twisted Metal was Nintendo franchise then it would probably all be Small Brawl, so to speak.
I imagine we would've gotten Sweet Tooth and Calypso in Smash as of right now if it was the case, and i'm sure Mario and Luigi would appear as a secret character in TM. (same thing goes to the TM characters in Mario Kart).

man this one was really good, ye it was for a younger audience but i enjoyed this one a lot. Considering i played all psx tsm between 6-8 years old

AiDeN FrIeDmAn-YeTtAw I don't think the E 10 rating existed at the time
+tanner miller I thought they existed when n64 was a thing

smart kids:REVENGE ON CALYPSO
OldGuest2112YT Guest 2112 Except for Sweet Tooth. He was a psychotic troublemaking small kid in Small Brawl
Daniel Hulse But he was smart to get a chance to have fun.
Sweet Tooth's laugh is permenatly etched into my memory
Even as a kid and schoolyard bully, Calypso truly lives up to his name as a very resourceful villain.
One of the first video games I ever played. Have loved them since I was 5.
😂
*Twisted Metal Black comes out*
Wow this is dark
(Less than a year later)
*Small Brawl comes out*
Wow this is kiddy
the creators wanted to do both takes on the series one darker and one more kid friendly
Oh the memories of my childhood. It all just came slamming back to me.
One of my favorite games ever. Put so much time into it as a kid.
T.T childhood.
Lol, lil Calypso looks like a jimmy neutron character, I love it!
How fitting that this was my intro to the Twisted Metal series when I was little

This game was my shit when I was a kid
I know they had to remove the Axel ending, but then why do they show Axel in the Intro?
+lolkiu64 because axel was not hurt its only offensive if he is hurt and also they did not have the time to remove axel since they had a due date to get the game out for sale.
thanks for the info
Who is Axel there Anyway?? :)
The kid in the wheelchair.
I am just now finding out this exists. Today years old or whatever.
back when they were kids
This game looks like it was underrated
Imagine if the cast from the normal twisted metal met these guys
easily one of my favorite games in the series
I remember axel and darkside having drivers but i understand axel ending was cut due to being offensive but for darkside...what happened to the driver?
Darkside never had an ending planned, as he was added in at the last minute.
There is concept artwork of Darkside’s driver that you can look up. The vehicle is piloted by a kid named Jimmy Ash.
