  • In today's video we check out my new Skoda Octavia VRS I bought cheap-ish from Copart UK. There's a reason it was cheap though! Do it keep it or sell it on?

Hi Dean, I'm a private hire cabbie and I'm on my 4th Octavia, sold the others with under 200k and never got more than £1500 for any of them. All of them had full service history with no holes and looked after. Think a quick wash and brush up and get rid mate.

@@adrianthorpe8005 all the people that have bought my old taxis have got bargains. I still see my first Octavia running around and I sold it in 2008 with 190k so god knows what it's done now. The thing is, it was washed every 4 days, waxed once a month, serviced every 10k, ( 10 weeks ) and wanted for nothing. The one that Dean has bought is a dog ( no offence ) because it's not the drivers car they dont give a s%%t. Wash and brush up, it will make money because it's a VRS but dont spend money on it.
Ps, I am a part time car trader as well.

I do love the Octavia, it is extra gorgeous in VRS spec, typically the build quality of this car is testament to Škoda reliability and durability, having covered such a high mileage, and no doubt as a first responder vehicle, would have been worked hard, it has stood up to its punishing life extremely well, therefore it’s no surprise Škoda was voted most reliable brand 2020 by What car!!!, it would be great to see this car restored in future videos please!!.

As an Ambo vehicle, I think this is in good condition. In Aus emergency vehicles have dozens of holes drilled into the dash and trims, and usually a handful of holes drilled through the body to feed various bits of tech, lighting and electronics.

My León TDI mk1 (same platform, one generation older) does "check engine" + "glow plug" combined as a signal. It's even in the instructions - check engine on + glow plug flashing = problem detected, both permanently on = error stored in the computer, that goes away after a while.
And in these TDIs it's basically always the turbo. I've upgraded mine after ~140kkm, but the flashing glow plug came back when a hose from the intercooler to the engine came loose.
To me, those lights are normal, that means the car works and you just need to fix one thing (in the case of the hose, we've secured it with a self-tapper because the boost was too high and normal hose clamp couldn't cope with it, hehe).

I would have said sort the easy/cheap wins, get an MOT and sell but the windscreen is a significant and unavoidable cost. Thing is, those Skoda estates do have a bit of a following and the VRS badge doesn't hurt. The miles aren't so much of a problem for a diesel. Fix the roof, front bumper, turbo actuator (or pipe leak) and make it presentable and review your situation. What else have you got needing your input ?

I have the same engine on my A3. i had to replace the turbo actuator as it gave an underboost fault, DPF clogged up and had to be cleaned, and the CAYC engines are notorious for injectors failures. If your injectors end with a B letter, they are the old type and tend to fail, if they end with an S, it is an updated injector type and should be OK !

That isn't an ex NHS vehicle.
It was M+L Ambulance who became UKSAS and then SSG (a Spanish Co I believe that secures loans against all assets then closes down)
They went bankrupt last year with all their assets sold.
I never drove that actual one but did use one of their other VRs Skodas.
I think that one was in the workshop undergoing maintenance and was sold as a non runner.
The NHS never fits budget tyres.
Scarely these were used to answer 999 calls in East of England and down in Reading.
Its a quick flip for me.
Get it legal and safe then sell, as the type of neglect that vehicle (and the rest of their fleet) has suffered mean it will never be a straight vehicle.

Mine also hasa charge point on the side and had loads of trim parts missing. Took ages to undo all the electrics and get the horn working but underneath solid and no expense spared on the running gear. Maybe I got lucky with mine but I love it because of how cheap it was. Ir runs great with good performance and economy and it someone hits it with a trolley I don't care lol. The problem

Aww nice to see a challenge that might see you some fixxer Joy
Its never going to make a lot of money due to its history.
At least the faults are common
Glow plug light flashing is either brake pedal switch requiring replacement or a trigger from one of the brake lights making the circuit fault. Being an emergency vehicle they will have messed alot with the wiring for emergency lights. If the key cycle clears when you key on its not going to be glowplugs and they only come on at/prior to start.
Looking at the front right it appears that the FMIC piping may be seperating as the pipes on these fatigue they allow oil blowby and eventually loosen and deform.
The 1.9 ARL PD Golfs also suffered with this along with fatigue of the metal lower intake pipe (pancake pipe) i believe these were revised to plastic a few years after.
With no nice clean are coming in through the front intake i'm not surpised that its been suffering for air and it begs what on earth the Air filter is going to look like.
A spray of some IPA on the MAF will most likely give her some balls back too. I cant rember if these are thermit
The NHS and ambulance service do run their vehicles for a very long time and due to the way that they are funded the cars are written off for their value and all sent to auction even if it only sells for a pound they have dispersed of the asset and as such any liability of it. These will have been used as paramedic response vehicles who unlike police drivers they dont really thrash the cars.
Although i can see quite a few dents on the rocker panels presumably from being on and off the kerbs a few thousand times 😂
I think that you should keep it for now do a fixxer upper series for the old girl i understand you are really about the flip but you are a very good presenter and you teach well. A rubber grommet / plug in that hole on the roof would suffice and would be in keeping with the essence of what the car was which is a workhorse and what it is now. its a testament really.
I think it would be interesting personally plus this is another part of saving a car which would otherwise be a scrapper.

I reckon there is a lot of life in the car yet and personally I would do it up for my own use but I am no so sure you have much room to make a profit. I'm currently running a vivaro with 415k on it and all original parts apart from power steering pump and I've had great value from the machine so you could probably get at least another couple of hundred k of use from this machine with the right care.

Not all ambulance vehicles are NHS. There are a lot of private ambulance companies out there. I work for NHS ambulance service and all our vehicles are maintained regardless of cost. Those tyres give it away, we only fit branded tyres, usually OE . The fact its 10nyears old gives it away as well. All our vehicles are changed every 4-5 years. Be very surprised if it was an ex NHS vehicle.

I believe it was an ambulance vehicle, however somebody has purchased it after and has just not put the vehicle on their name e.g. a trader might have had it for a while and then dumped it back on Copart (very common).
The tints are aftermarket and usually emergency service vehicles have branded tyres.

Love your channel, no bs , but could eat up money fast in repairs and might struggle to sell on with that mileage....so spare/repair I feel.

Fix it I had a 2009 vrs had the same fault it was just a new boost pressure sensor, the air con pump always fails on that model but you try to tighten up the center screw in on the pump by removing wheel and inside cover I did and aircon started working again. Bearings can also go a common fault even on the mk3

Get it mechanically fine then sell it, bung the roof with a gland and sealant under the gland

Hi there this is what I would do, fix the boost problem maybe remove turbo strip and clean the variable vanes maybe that will sort the boost problem out then clean it up and cut your losses as one of the guys on here said put your money towards the RS4 engine I would be curious to find out what exactly happened to it im sure it can be repaired regards from Paris

That was a tasty-looking Ford Mustang in the background. I work at Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group in Cambridge, right next to a Marshall Motors showroom, with a bright orange and a bright green Mustang... one day, baby.
Still, I can't complain. When I joined Marshall, I needed a new car. I got a brand new 2019 Skoda Octavia SE L with all the toys, in metallic red, and the company paid the deposit and the first two services. I haven't had the second yet.
    Great company to work for.

I'd be tempted to clean exterior and interior up so only mechanical issues remain. Maybe mot it, did you see anything that would stop it passing an mot? With all that out the way it won't be to overwhelming for a potential buyer to fix the mechanical issues, you may break even and make a few videos out of it, best of both worlds

Just watched the Vrs video. From what I've seen of your last videos a clever fella like you could have it fixed in no time and it'd make a nice cheap family car for someone with a small profit for you. The research into its former life was very interesting, but if barring the lights and stripes that car was attending ANY emergency you wouldn't want to be the patient!!!! What a disgrace, private or nhs. I'm a Pcv driver and some of our stuff has 600k on the clock and makes that skoda look like a crock. Take care, another great video. I'm a Ford man rather than the VAG group stuff, I saw the Mustang - looks fab (biased). If I did buy a vag product I'd get a skoda or seat I wouldnt be badge snobby!!! . However for me for the individuality side of things I'd get(with a lottery win that is) a TT RS, as the engine is unique as such and not used in anything else (yet) & sounds like the Urr Quattro, a car even a Ford man like me admires(I like the RS4 with the 4 litre V8 fr the R8 too) . Perhaps you could find a bust or lightly damaged one to fix? A Golf or Scirocco sleeper with that engine would be good too! Best wishes. Stay safe. Ben 🚌🚍😷😁

Being an emergency vehicle, it may have been remapped. As result of remapping those engines with the DPF can result in premature faults. May be worth rolling road it to see if its the original map...

The OSR definitely looked warped when you span it.
Personally if I’d bought that I’d clean it up the best I could for as little money as possible, things like remove the tints and give it a wash. It would then go on eBay listing the most obvious issues but inviting inspection pre bidding as you’re putting the onus on the bidder.
You’ll clear way more than £1500, seen octavia taxi’s with 400k on sell for more than that so you’ll definitely earn a drink from it. Fixing it would cost at least £1000 (wheel refurb, roof repair & paint, changing worn/ replacing missing parts etc.
Some of the bits you need like the missing interior light surround might be on the breaker MK5 you’ve got, I’d even check that for bump stops, mats etc.
As the saying goes, you can’t polish a turd 😂

    • @SavingSalvage
      @SavingSalvage  3 роки тому +1

      yeah pretty much spot on

    • @DanLeeds10
      @DanLeeds10 3 роки тому

Saving Salvage if you eBay auction it the onus is generally on the buyer once the major stuff has been listed. Wondering if the bonnet handle and trim on that MK5 is the same, most bits are interchangeable so it’s a cheap fix for content but don’t adjust your standards for content.
A quick punt video is equally interesting, just done and dusted in one episode.
