Heads up on the space blanket. As Police officer in the UK, when I used to do uniform patrol, I pulled a male from a vehicle that had entered water. I put a space blanket around him to keep him warm whilst I waited for the paramedics to arrive. When they did, the first thing they did was pull the space blanket off him and then chastise me. Apparently, they work like a thermos. If the person is cold, it will keep them cold and even make them colder. If they are warm, they will keep them warm. They suggested for someone cold, recovered from a cold environment, was to use a blanket - the old style woollen ones or the type you would use on your bed.
I agree good for a wind break like a wind breaker and to trap air but I have found then kind of mess except as a outer layer or even rain layer that is important too. That said a lot better than nothing... or teamed with a blanket as the shell
One suggestion for if your travels take you through remote areas in winter, two packages of black cherry gelatin. It is used as a signaling device. Dump one pack on the snow. in about 15 to 30 minutes, you get a big red dot that is about 15 to 20 feet across. I used to fly mountain air rescue. It is almost shocking how well that show up to an air-crew doing search. A bit pricey, consider a personal locator transmitter. Every little bit helps us to find you when you are lost.

I don't think there's any kind of symbol @kadmow should've used instead - he should simply have omitted the parentheses and written it like "Nah, those things are required in Europe - they must be bad ... lol" . There has been efforts to introduce the "sarcastrophe" to denote sarcastic content or text that otherwise should not be interpreted in a pure literal sense; the caret; ^. But it has never caught on. For example, ^Yeah, right!^
During northern snow season I always carry a grain shovel along with a 36" steel shovel. Depending on the type of snow, you need to have both. You're going to be there for a while with that little folder. I have a lithium jump pack but I'll always have real jumper cables. I also always carry a below zero sleeping bag for each person. Where I lived, it could be 6 hours before anyone comes along.
extra socks/general clothing especially during winter is looked past on too frequently. If it starts raining or something the last thing you want is wet clothes and cold weather. It can also serve other people who need fresh stuff
I live 24 miles from a big city and 5 miles from any small town but have had great fun making up my own Scottish relevant kit after watching your video from last year and wouldn't leave home without it. My son even gets involved, cheers Cody 🌿
Once a "Man" ends up in a deep ditch (assuming it wasn't a setup just for video purposes) his greatest asset is a friend with another truck, or a winch.
Those jump packs are great, but no replacement for a set of cables. The jump packs can save you in many situations, but leave you stranded in others where the cables will prevail.
This kit is almost perfect! I would also add some food in it, maybe in a separate container. A bunch of crunchy bars and a bottle of water will save you from loosing too much energy on digging out of the mud or snow. And will cheer you up a little.
My first rule/agreement with my kids when they came of age and mentioned wanting a car was exactly this. A safety kit that gets pulled every season to adjust for that season. IE: pull food goods making sure they’re up to date, swap out the gallon water jugs, add/remove a wool blanket depending on temp outside and so on. Always try to keep a current well built kit, it CAN save yours or someone else’s life someday. Yes, it’s THAT important...😉✌🏼Good stuff Cody, thanks for putting this out there again. 👍🏼👍🏼 from this guy!
@@Russ0107 :Over protective "parent" - There really should be little perishable in the "Emergency Pack" - ok an annual check of everything in a vehicle is fine - also whenever you plan a trip water gets tossed in.. If you Didn't plan it - then it shouldn't happen. When it does happen that makes it an accident - yes that water may be useful - if you can reach it - if it is in the trunk, and you are on your lid - not so useful.
@@Russ0107 depending on where and how they’re stored, water bottles/jugs leach toxins... the darker and cooler, they’re stored, the better they are. Hot in a trunk is no good unless you use a metal canteen, that’s why I suggest rotation. ... google it✌🏼😉

@Predbeau101 Hot hands feel like a big hug when you're freezing to death. The groin is good because of the femoral artery. I've never been in weather that cold lol. People think they're just for your hands, but you know when your cold and alone you'll come up with some ingenious ways to use what you got.

I can't argue with your picks Cody. I would recommend having two or three Space Blankets in the kit just because. Some army wool blankets paired up with the Space Blankets is a hard combo to beat. Something I toss in the back of my Toyota arr strips of old carpet to be used as traction pads. A spray bottle filled with straight bleach sprayed on the tires will also improve their traction if you just need something to get you going.
I have a very similar kit built up for each of my vehicles. Two quick recommendations. #1 - Add a few rags. Something to wipe hands or anything else that gets really dirty. Nothing special, just enough to wipe heavy grease, dirt, or water away. #2 - Repackage your extra AA flashlight batteries into one of the Storacall battery holders. You introduced me to them in a previous video many many moons ago. I’m disappointed you left your AA’s in the small cardboard box and not the Storacell. That box will tear, get soggy, and slowly disintegrate over time. I always enjoy the great content. Keep it up!

I can't tell you how many times I'll look to your advice - as well as others - in homesteading / life skill situations. I'm a recently purchased land in and moved to Northern Michigan. Tip for if you have the car body digging into a tire: Stick the end of something like a 4x4 into the wheel well so that when you move the car the wheel pushes the board around the wheel well pushing the metal out. Works best with a second person to get the board started while you move the car. I've done this a bunch of times when someone decided they couldn't afford to have me tow them.
@@kadmow Because if your battery dies or you are involved in an accident and the vehicle doesnt start, you cant charge off it. Hence the need for the kit.
I had a driver trainer who was an Arkansas state trooper. He told me that every safety kit in vehicles should include a single clean white sheet. That was in the late 90s and unfortunately I had to use that sheet twice (2 different sheets) in my life as a long haul truck driver. At the bottom of my bag in the trunk of my car is a single white sheet. And I pray that I never have to take it out except to wash it.

Duct Tape burns pretty good too. I would offer that you put a length of 550 cord in the kit maybe with a bit of bank line. Also some heavy can liners. The cord you can use to secure the blanket or other odd items. The liners have a lot of uses.
As a woman who drives a two wheel drive little sedan, I sure appreciate you gentlemen who are prepared! I do keep a kit in my car for maintenance and emergencies, but if I'm stuck in a ditch I'll be calling a man with towing equipment.
I had a friend who was always locking his keys in his car so in my car I had a kit for breaking into his car. It was a wire coat hanger and the ice scraper I used to pry his window open to get the coat hanger in there, we used to have to break into his car at least once a week.
PSA: Lithium batteries die in the cold! If you live somewhere cold, use alkaline for your flashlight. Also, don't expect your battery bank to live in the cold.
Ive read that rechargeable Lithiums aren't good for freezing temps but the regular non rechargeable Lithiums like by Energizer can stand really cold weather. I know 1st hand they are waaay better than alkaline in around 30F temps
I wouldn't rely on those foldable shovels. There's a reason why military units keep 24" steel digging shovels around. They're under $20 and last a lifetime. Toss one in each automobile.
I carry one D handle grain shovel and one long handle shovel for the passengers heck even my mother carried a small grain shovel and an axe at age 75 she could just look helpless and hand it to whoever stopped to pull her 4x4 out or pull up and hand them to the poor stuck guy
@@kadmow the smaller grain shovel shape is good for cutting 50 lb blocks of snow when you need to move lots of volume just faster to use than a small tradesman style shovel or even worse a survival shovel, even skiing we carry shovels that wont fit in a 40 l ( 10 gallon) pack for avy rescue.
During snow season, I always keep a grain shovel and a full size steel shovel in my truck for the different kinds of snow. Also a below 0 sleeping bag.
Thank you for taking the time to make the video - great minds think alike on many of the items you mentioned….The NOCO battery has USB ports to charge a phone, and the battery has capacity for many charges - this is another layer of how to keep a phone charged. I put together a phone pack that has an adapter, cables, and a pigtail with alligator clips, so I can connect directly to the battery. This underscores how important it is to keep that cell phone going. I found that when in an encampment everyone is scrambling with cables and charging access. Since I have the room, I still carry jump cables, as in the cold the Li may not be at peak performance due to time from last charge, or age. Expect to swap out the battery pack every so often (5 years?) as the Li batteries age out. So, date the battery pack for when you determine it expires. I would go no longer than 10. It makes sense to try using the battery, on a particularly cold day, to start your car, but that takes a level of perseverance that not everyone has. Still, disconnecting the vehicle battery and trying to start it with the backup once a year is a worthy insurance…..Just some thoughts. Keep the videos coming, it is great to think about stuff in advance.
East coast hunter here. I can vouch for that box setup. Some straps, a silky saw and a bit of wrangleringenuitey has helped a ton getting my buds out of less than ideal situations. Solid advice 👌
The US military issue by Ames is USA made. Cost twice as much but it's better quality. SOG and Gerber also make similar shovels but are not USA made. The Gerber etool may be assembled in the US(?) They're being very elusive. So difficult to find something not made in China.
I always recommend that people get all of this stuff mentioned here, but also some glowsticks ... when youre working on the side of the road its great to have the flashers as a warning device, but also having glow sticks or a reflective vest work great too so other drivers see where youre at, not just your car... Also get a mini tool kit with screwdrivers, and also a BarCharts, Inc., QuickStudy First aid kit guide to common injuries and illnesses. It gives a quick reference chart for things like how to treat a stroke, heart attack, broken bones, concussion...
Another great fire starter can be made with the pressed paper egg cartons! Fill them with wood chips and candle wax. They can be easily broken into easy to light cubes!
Speaking of Granddad's, when I was a kid, I lived with my Grandparents for several years in Michigan. My Granddad always carried stove ashes with him instead of kitty litter. Amazing traction on snow and ice...

And I have had the best of luck with your survival kits and wood chopping tips. They have helped me over the years so much, and I thank you for that. This winter is gonna be harsh says the farmer’s almanac, so I’m getting ready. I’m down in western Maryland, and although im pretty southern, the only thing that heats my house, is a wood stove. I would add a few hand warmers. Those things saved my hands once, coming back from snowshoeing. The snow started falling and my hands were wet and frozen. The only other time I used them was during a soccer game in the snow. I carry a set with me in my jacket pocket wherever I go. You never know when you might misjudge the weather or your capabilities.
Though I live in rural Ireland and we rarely get snow, I do carry a similar kit in my car. Two things that I carry that aren't apparent in your kit are a set of folding resin sand/mud/snow ladder boards which I place under the drive wheels if I'm stopping off of a paved surface, we do get a lot of rain and boggy soil, you can park on what seems firm ground and come back an hour later and find the vehicle has sunk to its axles. I also carry a few long life cereal bars, a recovery in cold weather can be strenuous and a calorie boost can go a long way to getting home safely.
We don't get much winter weather where I live so I don't carry most of these things but I do carry more gear in my truck than anyone I know. I will never be the man begging to borrow jumper cables, an air compressor or basic tools. I can also attest to the strength and durability of the Action Packers. I've got one that's been sliding around in one vehicle or another of mine for almost 20 years.
Many years ago an old carpenter I was working with was grumbling about winter here in Idaho, and hoping he could retire soon. When we asked him where he wanted to be he said "I'm gonna drive south until someone at a gas station asks me why I have little nails in my tires. Then I know I've made it far enough."
One thing I would add is a good quality cigarette lighter phone charger and cable. In fact, I put one in each vehicle. They are handy to charge the phone while driving so the battery backup can be reserved for when you are away from the vehicle.
It's a great time to get some goods at Costco, for example, bought a little dewalt screwdriver and socket set there last year for $20 and I saw on Monday that they have the sets back. Up to 14mm or 9/16th which covers most things in my engine bay. It's tossed into my little kit, along with Amazon basic pliers, a jump pack, first aid, a couple Raman packages, a purifying straw, a bunch of ways to start a 🔥, a hatchet, a folding saw, a sport, space blanket, a toothbrush (for morale), Leatherman, etc. I drive a car so it just sits in the foot well behind the driver's seat. Haven't had to use anything in the 6 years I started the bag. An aluminum winter shovel too!

Tea candles! One tea candle on the dash will keep the car above freezing temperatures... If you add a clay flower pot, you can really get some heat out of it.

I also keep a full change of clothes in my box. Pants, Shirt, Shoes, Socks. I always seem to have car issues when I'm dressed up.

lithium jump pack is a no go in Minnesota if you leave it in the vehicle that's parked outside over night cold weather renders them useless
Jump packs generally will charge a cell phone dozens of times with the proper cord. Most have a usb plug.
And who cares about that when most of us are in a car every day (Plugged in) - and that can charge a phone many times anyhow...

That was in the late 90s and unfortunately I had to use that sheet twice (2 different sheets) in my life as a long haul truck driver. At the bottom of my bag in the trunk of my car is a single white sheet. And I pray that I never have to take it out except to wash it.

Duct Tape burns pretty good too. I would offer that you put a length of 550 cord in the kit maybe with a bit of bank line. Also some heavy can liners. The cord you can use to secure the blanket or other odd items. The liners have a lot of uses.

As a woman who drives a two wheel drive little sedan, I sure appreciate you gentlemen who are prepared! I do keep a kit in my car for maintenance and emergencies, but if I'm stuck in a ditch I'll be calling a man with towing equipment.
Those LED hockey pucks are a godsent. Every fire truck on our dept has a bag full of them. We used to use box lights and traffic cones.
A single wire coat hanger. Could be the difference between someone's bad day getting worse, or someone's bad day getting better.
I had a friend who was always locking his keys in his car so in my car I had a kit for breaking into his car. It was a wire coat hanger and the ice scraper I used to pry his window open to get the coat hanger in there, we used to have to break into his car at least once a week.
Why didn't you just get a spare key and keep it for your friend?
It would be helpful to have Cody's number in your kit for when you need to get towed out of a ditch.
PSA: Lithium batteries die in the cold! If you live somewhere cold, use alkaline for your flashlight. Also, don't expect your battery bank to live in the cold.
Ive read that rechargeable Lithiums aren't good for freezing temps but the regular non rechargeable Lithiums like by Energizer can stand really cold weather. I know 1st hand they are waaay better than alkaline in around 30F temps
I wouldn't rely on those foldable shovels. There's a reason why military units keep 24" steel digging shovels around. They're under $20 and last a lifetime. Toss one in each automobile.
I carry one D handle grain shovel and one long handle shovel for the passengers heck even my mother carried a small grain shovel and an axe at age 75 she could just look helpless and hand it to whoever stopped to pull her 4x4 out or pull up and hand them to the poor stuck guy
@@Morgan2XL grain shovels aren't useful at much other than shoveling grain or light sand / snow - a proper long handled shovel on the other hand..
@@kadmow the smaller grain shovel shape is good for cutting 50 lb blocks of snow when you need to move lots of volume just faster to use than a small tradesman style shovel or even worse a survival shovel, even skiing we carry shovels that wont fit in a 40 l ( 10 gallon) pack for avy rescue.
During snow season, I always keep a grain shovel and a full size steel shovel in my truck for the different kinds of snow. Also a below 0 sleeping bag.
Thank you for taking the time to make the video - great minds think alike on many of the items you mentioned….The NOCO battery has USB ports to charge a phone, and the battery has capacity for many charges - this is another layer of how to keep a phone charged. I put together a phone pack that has an adapter, cables, and a pigtail with alligator clips, so I can connect directly to the battery. This underscores how important it is to keep that cell phone going. I found that when in an encampment everyone is scrambling with cables and charging access. Since I have the room, I still carry jump cables, as in the cold the Li may not be at peak performance due to time from last charge, or age. Expect to swap out the battery pack every so often (5 years?) as the Li batteries age out. So, date the battery pack for when you determine it expires. I would go no longer than 10. It makes sense to try using the battery, on a particularly cold day, to start your car, but that takes a level of perseverance that not everyone has. Still, disconnecting the vehicle battery and trying to start it with the backup once a year is a worthy insurance…..Just some thoughts. Keep the videos coming, it is great to think about stuff in advance.

The US military issue by Ames is USA made. Cost twice as much but it's better quality. SOG and Gerber also make similar shovels but are not USA made. The Gerber etool may be assembled in the US(?) They're being very elusive. So difficult to find something not made in China.
I always recommend that people get all of this stuff mentioned here, but also some glowsticks ... when youre working on the side of the road its great to have the flashers as a warning device, but also having glow sticks or a reflective vest work great too so other drivers see where youre at, not just your car... Also get a mini tool kit with screwdrivers, and also a BarCharts, Inc., QuickStudy First aid kit guide to common injuries and illnesses. It gives a quick reference chart for things like how to treat a stroke, heart attack, broken bones, concussion...

Another great fire starter can be made with the pressed paper egg cartons! Fill them with wood chips and candle wax. They can be easily broken into easy to light cubes!
Speaking of Granddad's, when I was a kid, I lived with my Grandparents for several years in Michigan. My Granddad always carried stove ashes with him instead of kitty litter. Amazing traction on snow and ice...
I would ad an MRE and a camp stove and a way to boil water.

And I have had the best of luck with your survival kits and wood chopping tips. They have helped me over the years so much, and I thank you for that. This winter is gonna be harsh says the farmer’s almanac, so I’m getting ready. I’m down in western Maryland, and although im pretty southern, the only thing that heats my house, is a wood stove. I would add a few hand warmers. Those things saved my hands once, coming back from snowshoeing. The snow started falling and my hands were wet and frozen. The only other time I used them was during a soccer game in the snow. I carry a set with me in my jacket pocket wherever I go. You never know when you might misjudge the weather or your capabilities.

Here in Florida I fear I may have to wear pants. Winter is cruel.
Though I live in rural Ireland and we rarely get snow, I do carry a similar kit in my car. Two things that I carry that aren't apparent in your kit are a set of folding resin sand/mud/snow ladder boards which I place under the drive wheels if I'm stopping off of a paved surface, we do get a lot of rain and boggy soil, you can park on what seems firm ground and come back an hour later and find the vehicle has sunk to its axles. I also carry a few long life cereal bars, a recovery in cold weather can be strenuous and a calorie boost can go a long way to getting home safely.

We don't get much winter weather where I live so I don't carry most of these things but I do carry more gear in my truck than anyone I know. I will never be the man begging to borrow jumper cables, an air compressor or basic tools. I can also attest to the strength and durability of the Action Packers. I've got one that's been sliding around in one vehicle or another of mine for almost 20 years.

One thing I would add is a good quality cigarette lighter phone charger and cable. In fact, I put one in each vehicle. They are handy to charge the phone while driving so the battery backup can be reserved for when you are away from the vehicle.

It's a great time to get some goods at Costco, for example, bought a little dewalt screwdriver and socket set there last year for $20 and I saw on Monday that they have the sets back. Up to 14mm or 9/16th which covers most things in my engine bay.
It's tossed into my little kit, along with Amazon basic pliers, a jump pack, first aid, a couple Raman packages, a purifying straw, a bunch of ways to start a 🔥, a hatchet, a folding saw, a sport, space blanket, a toothbrush (for morale), Leatherman, etc. I drive a car so it just sits in the foot well behind the driver's seat. Haven't had to use anything in the 6 years I started the bag. An aluminum winter shovel too!
