    I got the Lenovo Idea pad 5 14 inch, i5 16 gigs ram, 512gb storage. I mostly do software development and am not a content creator so the screen doesn't bother me. In fact, I prefer a matte screen that is not reflective when I code. It pretty much ticks all the important boxes for getting work done. Just bought a thunderbolt 3 hub that has charging to hopefully help with the port plus charging situation. Otherwise, so far this is a solid laptop and for the $650, I got it for at Costco, got no complaints..

      @@pyro9650 I ended up returning it. Soon after I saw a deal on the ideapad 5 15, with the AMD Ryzen 5700u, 16gigs, 512GB for the same price after coupons. What I do lose after "upgrading". I will say is the 14 inch feels better built, especially the hinge, and it being able to open with one hand unlike the 15 inch. The primary benefit of Intel I lost is thunderbolt, because with the single USBC port I was able to add a thunderbolt hub to add extra ports or charge and add a external display all on that single port. The 11th gen i5 is a really good performer on that machine. if you can get it for a good price I would recommend it. $650 or less. Costco has recurring sales on it every few weeks

      @@Kareem-cx4fi So, you do like the 15 with Ryzen better, or you miss the Intel? Also, I am a data analyst and really think I want the 15" screen -- what's your opinion having tried both? Big difference? Looking to buy soon, so appreciate if you have any quick feedback! Thanks.

    • @Kareem-cx4fi
      @Kareem-cx4fi 2 роки тому +3

      @@jessicachodor1754 I would say everything I said prior still holds true. I definitely prefer the 5700u over the 11gen i5. It's 8 cores will age better for sure, especially since the single core difference is small. Thunderbolt, if you need it, Intel is your only choice, but get the i7 instead of i5 if you looking at 11gen, it's higher cache and much higher single core performance would be the better choice depending on the type of applications you use. I will always pick the 5700u over the i5. With the 11gen i7 vs 5700u, I would say it depends on what applications you are using and if the extra cores will benefit you immediately in the shorter term(they will benefit you long term, as software gets more complicated and you have more stuff running on your OS over time...). If you plan on having at most one external monitor like me, AMD version is fine. If you need more than one external monitor while charging, you will need thunderbolt. 15 inch also allows for additional space for a secondary SATA drive. I added a 1 terabyte SATA SSD to increase my storage to 1.5 terabytes. Had to buy the adapter for SATA to motherboard as well though, since it's not included on the motherboard. Also machine holds up well, though the hinge felt better on the 14 inch, 15 is still holding strong with no signs of wear as yet, but then again it hasn't even been a year so to early too tell as yet.

Also there's no light on caps lock so I can't tell if caps is on or off. Also: world's worst keyboard layout (try using the microscopic left shift button, lol) Also the numpad which I paid extra for is disabled every time it sleeps, and there is no fix for that. Great video! But i would steer clear of the LENOVO Ideapad 5! I'm a writer so all the raves about the keyboard appealed to me, as well as great battery life, because during the pandemic I spent a lot of hours sitting outside closed coffee shops just writing on battery power. But...the HINGE problem on these Lenovo's is real. After barely 5 months I started hearing cracking and suddenly bits of plastic started falling out and the hinge started splitting open. I got it repaired and it lasted 3 weeks before breaking apart again. I have NEVER had any such problems with another brand of laptop, no matter how cheap. When looking up this problem online I saw a plethora of the exact same hinge complaints just over the past three months of 2021. Now I just bought a Dell Inspiron 2-in-one 14in. 7000 with 16gb, and 512 SSD. Although I haven't set it up yet, I'm feeling good about all the positive reviews it has gotten.

      @@TommyRot The Dell Inspiron 2-1, which I'm using now, has been fine. I really didn't need a touchscreen but this was on sale, and had 16gb or Ram whereas the others only had 8, so I went for it. I almost immediately disabled the touchscreen because I found that too often when I'm typing my fingers brush the screen and activate something. Overall, however it seems like a solid laptop. It has a little bloatware that is easily uninstalled, but there has been no indication of a crumbling hinge (like the Lenovo).

      My Lenovo Z50 has the same hinge problem. I've replaced the back case 3 times as well as the power jack (which kept getting severed due to the hinge problem). Now the top part above the keyboard is coming apart. The worst build quality I've seen in a laptop.

    • @saintsataniko2116
      @saintsataniko2116 2 роки тому +1

      @@Selandrine I complained on the Lenovo forums and initially their Support said they would charge for a repair. I repeated again that it was a "KNOWN issue" with their hinges and I had never had such an issue with any laptop even much cheaper ones. Eventually they relented and a supervisor said they had gotten in new hinges and would repair it for free. A shipping box arrived on my doorstep within days and they returned the laptop with a new hinge and screen a few weeks later. So you can try that route. It looks much sturdier now, but I have yet to use it even once simply because I'm now using the Dell Inspiron I bought to replace it.

    I'm a relatively reasonable guy - when you spend a considerable time living in the outdoors you become reasonable. I came to the conclusion that the ACER Swift 3 has a good build quality and can be outfitted with CPU/RAM to suit most use-cases. I like your reviews because they are direct and you don't really tolerate the modern marketing nonsense e.g. modern ThinkPads with Thunderbolt ports which are also the only way to charge the laptop - yea I'm gonna connect an external GPU which I can only use for 45 minutes because the ThinkPad cannot be charged without the Thunderbolt port... I think reviews like this are important because lying manufacturers prey on normal consumers these days. When holding the Lenovo Ideapads and HP 15 in my hands I wanted to drop them on the showroom floor because the build quality is so cheap, plastic and flimsy - in the outdoor sphere we know the practical difference between good plastic, bad plastic, good metal and bad metal - the cheaper Lenovo and HP options these days are 1 or 2 year products made from weak materials. I have rebuilt many car engines; I know when a laptop flexes 5mm from light pressure that it is basically made-to-break. ACER provides a good-value offering and the metal body and keyboard reminds me of the good old days of the ThinkPad 420/430 when manufacturers were still competing to make the best product possible - and in the end ThinkPads were the only laptop allowed on the International Space Station for over a decade; give NASA a modern HP or ThinkPad and they will use it as a coffee cup placemat. I just wish ACER would bevel their keys like all good keyboards - reduces the chance that you hit adjacent keys inadvertently.This comment took me about 40 minutes to write/edit - stout beer.

    Haha I'm literally on a 2 year old Acer swift 3 right now, and I'm here researching and considering a new dell!
    2 years is too short for a laptop. The power supply on mine has so many issues it's been horrific - I've been through at least 5 replacement power cords at this point. Another power supply problem is the thunderously loud BEEEEEEEP whenever you plug/unplug it (or for all those times the pathetic adapter plug just falls out of the machine). The trackpad is awful. Audio not so good. And most infuriating - I paid extra for a numpad keyboard, and my numpad is ALWAYS OFF BY DEFAULT! Also nothing inside this machine is accessible for cleaning and nothing is upgradable.
    I'm going back to a dell lattitude, that's what I had before the swift and although it's not as pretty, at least my last one didn't die after 2 years.

      Honestly 8gb ram in 2022 is on the short end of the stick I would try to opt for 16gb models at this point. Also the 1135G7 actually comes very close to the i7 in most day to day activities. Simple put i5 + 16gb ram will perform better than i7 + 8gb ram.

    I want everyone to know that you can get really good deals from OEM rather than retailers on higher-end laptops. Because you have the ability to customize everything, you can get a good spec xps for a lot less than a pre-made one at retailers.
    Edit: Wanted to add a bit of a caveat here: If you are planning on ever doing returns on it, just remember that you have to ship it back and it takes time and some of them do charge you for the shipping. A very small percentage also charges a restocking fee as well. Keep that in mind.

    I own two Acer Swift 3's, and for the most part I agree with the high ratings. But I would add one piece of advice for people who sometimes use foreign language keyboards. The silver model is very hard to read, because the backlighting is not uniform, and the characters have a whitish silver color which makes them almost invisible. The problem occurs both in a lighted room or a dark room, but is easily remedied by buying the blue model. I have one of each, and the blue is really much easier to see when trying to type Thai characters... They are both great machines for many purposes and in most other respects I concur completely wilt the high marks given by the reviewer.

      It depends, do you plan to game often? Or do you just need it for productivity?

    beware if you want to use logitech video capture software on the acer swift 3 ...it will freeze when you press capture using the brio web cam...just sayin....no solution in sight

    I’m thinking if getting the zenbook duo. I know it’s not this list but is it worth getting? I’m in my first year in university and I have to use revit and autocad for my first year of civil engineering. I thought the second screen would help a lot.

      Hi there it depends on the price and specs you are getting. Generally the zenbook is a good machine.

      @@SoulOfTech it’s got an i7 processor with 16gb ram and an intel iris graphics card with 512gb ssd. I’m not the best when it comes to specs tbh, that should be alright?
