      If you mean that lousy Wil Smith movie with the tacky CGI monsters, then yes, it has nothing in common with the novella, and is more of a rip off of 28 Days Later.

    It's the closest adaptation to "I am Legend" compare to its two remakes with Charlton Heston (Omega Man) and Will Smith (2007 flick).

  • @johnmanning6587
    @johnmanning6587 7 років тому +21

    You know what's weird? Each movie based on Richard Matheson's book manages to perfectly adapt one important part of the book. "Last Man on Earth' perfectly adapts the story, "The Omega Man" perfectly adapts the main character, and "I am Legend" perfectly adapts the theme and idea of isolation (at least up until the ending.) It's weird that i'm just now realizing that.

    • @rokia360
      @rokia360 4 роки тому +1

      This is really late but the ending of the Will Smith adaptation was changed because the test audiences didn't like the idea of Will Smith's character being the bad guy.

    • @ChainsawManDude97
      @ChainsawManDude97 Рік тому

      @@rokia360 3 years late but there is still the alternate ending where he realizes that what he did to the vampires (or Darkseekers as that adaptation calls them) was wrong, we the audience realize that they are not zombies, just people who have lost there humanity. They never wanted to be this way but they did. The fact that test audiences cause the ending to get replaced with a generic sacrifice ending is insulting. Test audiences for book adaptations should be fans of the book only.

    This is one of my favorite movies.
    Probably in my top 10 for horror.
    There's one scene that shows how dark some of these classic movies can get. It might not be able to show it like modern media, but it conveyed a grim tragedy that neither the Omega Man nor I Am Legend could.
    My favorite aspect however is how the vampires (who're a bit like zomibies here) still retain a slight intelligence and memory.
    So one of them, which is shown in the video, is Price's co-worker.
    Keep in mind. It's been years since the devastation happened.
    The co-worker is still "alive" and comes for Price every night. Calling him out by name outside of his shelter.
    Every-night.
    Every night he hears people he knew now threatening him. It's a persistent reminder of the past and terrible present. He can't escape the horror. He can't get true levity.

    Thrilled to see this movie reviewed ! I have seen it around fifteen years ago, on TV in France. I don't remember watching it till the end, being a teenager and all that, but the scene where Price's friend is calling him out saying "Morgan ! Morgan !" made a lasting impression on me. I think about it regularly. Funny thing about the title, in french they actually called it "Je suis une légende", a litteral translation of the novel's title.

    Oh man, I remember this movie. Back in the day (this being late 1960s) I was maybe 6, 7 years old when this came on the local Chiller Theater (11:30PM Fridays). I was with my brothers and sisters (my mom would usually fix a big plate of home fries...ah, that lardy goodness I can taste now) when we watched it.
    When the scene came on where Robert's wife came to the door (at the end of your video), I FLEW out of the room and hid under my mom and dad's bed :). Boy that freaked me out!
    Watching it in later years I really appreciate the story and the direction (and of course Vincent Price's acting; great, great actor). Also, I recall that Richard Matheson (the author of I Am Legend) wrote the screenplay for The Last Man on Earth, under a pseudonym.
    I've been having a nightly visit to old horror movies myself for Hallowe'en (Last night was 1932's Vampyr). Maybe I'll watch this again soon.

      angelowl89 it was brilliant, super creative, and was far ahead of its time - the plot twist at the end was a rising kick out of nowhere : how the tables can be turned against us, where we could go down as the "monster" we thought we righteously hunted ourselves: loved it

    • @madinsomaniac
      @madinsomaniac 7 років тому +3

      The start of the book makes no hints or indications as to the wrongness of the actions the main character took (not like he could in his capacity tell). We actually are made drawn to like and pity him as we follow his isolation through some very long and tiring years - zombies or "vampires" lurking in the background. The neat thing about this "virus" that came affecting these once-humans is that it wasn't, it was "bacteria". The twist happens as we discover that the bacteria had evolved to such a point that these "vampires" who had it were then able to socialize with each other and think and talk like normal humans do (bacteria being able to evolve). It is made a light at the end of the book how these vampires fear our main character like as if he were a a monster killing their kind, their "husbands" and loved ones as he had. As a new society beckoned, he was at the closing end of the old. The only thing left to stand in the way of the new majority (him now being in the minority, somehow now in the wrong as the majority who could now think dictates // the book having things to say about minority prejudice). You should read it, it isn't that long tbh :)

    In "Things to Come" (1936), based on the H.G. Wells novel, impoverished people called Walkers -- affected by a combination of war gas and psychic shock -- shamble aimlessly about the planet in rags, killing any "normal" they encounter. They are mute, unresponsive, and immune both to hunger and physical hardship while so doing, and thus resemble zombies.

      How about no political vitriol for once. I get enough of it from Stephen King, and for once, let the horror be fun instead of a drag.

    Love this movie. Creepy as hell when his wife comes back, whispering at the door. Its interesting to see so many modern horror and sci fi movies now that were so heavily influenced by these old classics. Ridley Scott's Alien always makes me think of the 1958 movie, It ! The Terror From Beyond Space. Its basically impossible to avoid clichés when making a modern movie.
    There was a movie made in 2007 called, I Am Omega.

    It would be interesting for a film to explore the science of zombie and how it all began than to just happen in a film if not done already.

    James, could you please pay attention to the correct aspect ratio? As a movie fan, you should care about correctly shaped pictures and not let them be squeezed or squashed.

      I found this on VHS back in the mid-90's and probably view it once a year or so. It's great. The atmosphere is fantastic. Price watching those home movies while laughing and crying is pretty heartbreaking. Also I love how they detail out how he is surviving.

      Overshadowed by that tacky exploitation film by Romeo, whose obsession with gore and bloodsplatter has degraded the whole genre.

    You forgot the strain Del Toro's take on the genre like in I am Legend both films and TV series trope was that the disease was caused by a virus. and those infected would turn on people for food.

    Definitely 28 Days Later was inspired by Last Man on Earth with the beginning showing London completely devoid of life. I wonder though if other classics, such as 30 Days of Night, and the graphic novel Y: The Last Man took inspiration from it....

    Vincent Price is always awesome. It is interesting, that "Last Man on Earth" makes vampires more of a zombies. Nowadays zombies are more like vampires, like in "iZombie" series (not a bad DC comic adaptation, by the way).
