    I remember when I was watching this on TV. My dad wondered in the room and asked me what I was watching. I said it's a Vincent Price movie that takes places after a vampire plague and he plays last normal person in the world. My dad's response was, "VINCENT PRICE is the last normal person?"

    Ah Vincent Price...the man was such a fun and entertaining person. And that voice..so unique and awesome

    Vincent Price was a rare, exceptional talent. I've seen him in plenty of schlock from mst3k and rifftrax, but no matter how awful the movie is, the man is always watchable and entertaining. You could give him the phonebook and he would hold the audience captive.
    He really was a legend.

    you know, you civilized vampires could have.. I dunno, carefully concealed yourselves during the day to make it too hard to find you. Used that intelligence of yours to figure out a way.. this guy has been fighting off hordes for years, you can't fight off a single guy?
    And you can't, like, write him a note? Something like "please stop killing vampires indiscriminately, some of us are good and have the shit under control."
    or they couldn't get on the damn radio and explain it? Come on now.

    I always knew that the Will Smith movie was based on a book and then an older movie but this is my first time seeing this one. I like this version a lot better in terms of how the vampiers are handled. In the modern version they really just were zombies that hated the sunlight for some reason. And they could not talk. This detail makes them even creepier.

      I still think the best version of this story was the Charlton Heston version "The Omega man"(1971). It' not perfect either but far superior to the Will Smith version.

    Kind of interesting that I Am Legend and this movie both look at the idea that the last human is a white collar man instead of the glamourised Arnie type or something that we get in zombie flicks today...

      In the middle we got "The Omega Man", when Charlton Heston did a series of SciFi movies in the late 60's-early 70's (Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, etc.). You should read the Richard Matheson book for the "original" view; he also wrote many great Twilight Zone episodes.

    I thought I was literally the only person in the world who loves this movie. I hate to disagree with Mr. Matheson, but this is the most faithful vision of his novel. It’s so on point that it even put the writer off with its stark, dry, apocalyptic vision.

    The existence of this version makes the Will Smith adaptation all the more disappointing. Why would you undercut the central theme when you've seen it can work on screen?

    • @erocrush
      @erocrush 3 роки тому

      The problem with that is this version turns (a lot of) people off. The cult following (thats is) dig the dry, remote, oppressive feel, but most people just wanna see a “stake em up”

    • @ShadowWingTronix
      @ShadowWingTronix 3 роки тому

      @@erocrush From what I've heard the reworked ending was that the hero finds the cure and gets it out to people. It's a more positive ending audiences wanted or needed at the time, which is why the original did poorly with test screenings. I'm not much into horror so I'm rather biased but "saving everyone from a plague" works better for me than "we've embraced what we are and don't want to return to not being rage zombies and that's what we want for our babies now".

    Not a bad flick, the Will Smith film woulda been close to as good, if they'd just stuck with the original ending.

    • @tarvoc746

      Slavoj Zizek reads the changed ending as a sign of the decline of film culture in the West: In the sixties, one could still make films about the fear of _being_ the Other, while nowadays, all popular Hollywood movies ever do is evoke fear of the Other.

      that movie wasn't just several decades too late to tell the kind of story it wanted to, not just a decade too late to not be in an era of oversaturation of zombiesque postapocalypses.. it was too fucking late for _will smith._ it's like a jim carrey movie from 2003, you know it can't be any good.

    As a kid, I watched quite a few Post apocalyptic shows, specifically The Tribe. as I got older, and I watched The Walking Dead, I got tired of the formula, the tropes, the cliches and how it's all very similar. Then I saw Rock N Rule, Wizards and Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeast, this one cementing a thought I had: the aftermath of the end of the world can be fun. Heck,I'm starting to watch Adventure Time now because of this. I think part of the reason why I like Mad Max Fury Road because it was an intense movie and so awesome (the story and characters were memorable too with great message and commentary) instead of the usual Man Is the Real Monster.

      Those are all more post-post-apocalyptic, when civilization has returned after the last of the old world has gone. This movie is like that middle point between the end and that point.
