This Optimus embodies the line 'Be strong enough to be gentle' just like G1 Optimus did all those years ago. That's the element I love the most about Transformers in every media and Skybound captured it perfectly.
Nobody in my real life will understand, so I'm putting it here: As an individual with autism who is mostly like a regular person expect highly sensitive to certain things, I was never able to fully see myself in any of the tough, battle-worn Transformers. I understood their trials and felt empathy towards them, however there was no moment of "Oh, I think I would react or do just like them" in any shape or form. I grew up with Bayverse unaware for years there are many other stuff, so maybe as I explore more, there will be something else, but for now only one moment made me feel seen. It was a random roll here on UA-cam with the deer scene. I'm trying to avoid looking into Tiktok-like content as much as possible, so clicking on that particular one was almost a miracle. As I watched it I felt something that wasn't there before. Admiration. Sympathy. Joy. All for Optimus and how he reacted. Now let me explain: Growing up people around me saw my sensitivity as a flaw. Nobody told me in the face "You're stupid, stop it!", however general attitude was "Hope she will grow out of this" as I was crying from hearing bones breaking in movies at 13 years of age. At the same time there was Optimus on my screen, big strong hero for all. I liked him, held even some nostalgia for the Bayverse version, but couldn't find that love, hope he inspired in people. Everything changed with the deer scene. Seeing a character so admired feeling sadness over something "trivial", taking his time to stop and apologise was just something else. In that shot for the first time in my life I felt like this level of vunerability is desired, not looked down upon. In the comments there was no crap like "He is too soft" or "That's just an animal, move on!", people were really understanding his position, without jugmment. That one little thing made me feel seen and finally find someone I can look up to. Thanks to anyone who read this mini-essay, needed some place to let it all out.
As someone who also deals with Autism, albeit mild enough were i can still function in a society, but i can tell that i'm "diffrent" too often i feel people talk down to me rather then at me, but i try not to let it affect me to much, & hearing your expreince with a character i too love so very much & as helped me in times of darkness, it makes me feel less weird.
And there r some ppl saying they "bastardized the characters" MY BROTHER IN CHRIST THE ONLY THING USED IN WRITING THOSE COMICS WAS PURE UNALTERED CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
I totally agree with everything you said. I did read this comic in his entirety this week and i was so charmed by- *everything*. The thrill, the desperation, the relationship. The ART. We havent gotten such a perfect balance of "kind but strong" optimus prime in so long i was starting to think he was lost somewhere in the 80s. I really hope more people read this comic and dont turn their back cause of the gijoes (which they dont even take spaces in the story at ALL) and give it a shot cause fr this is such a great start so far
Does anyone else find it ironic that thos optimus prime, probably the best one we've seen in years, is based on an unofficial 3rd party toy, the magic square light of piece. It's DWJ go to optimus prime, and he bought the magic square combaticons!
I just bought both volumes like 5 minutes ago (as of writing this) at a local comic store, and then I check my notifications and this drops today is going to be a good day
I just wish Hasbro and Activision would use their Overwatch-TF collab to at least remaster the Cybertron games. If my 360 red rings, I got no other options, and the closest thing my Xbox One could give me is Rise of the Dark Spark.
Can we also appreciate how well skybound were able to give hints to G.I. Joe far better than ROTB did. IMO; you CAN merge these universes together if you either build up to a crossover properly or leave small references/clues.
So my former roomate and I followed closely this new series and I remember he got the issue where Megatron made his first appearance in the snow. He told me that I would be surprised by the ending. But honestly I was more surprised when OP gave the Matrix's energy to save the hospital. That's just Prime
First comic felt Real Good with emotions and I also felt inspire to draw again so thanks to Johnson for encouraging me to go all out drawing messy of line art.
I love the passion you bring in this video. I love the transformers community on UA-cam. It's tight, intimate and it's fun hanging out and talk about comics
My only yet big criticism of Skybound's comics are the deaths: just for shock value, like not giving characters like Kup their chance to shine without killing them. Other than that, bravo!
Im completely new to the G1 transformers universe. I was there to see a couple of the Bayverse movies when I was a kid, liked it for a while and eventually stopped watching the movies since 2016? I only managed to discover their original designs after Transformers One exploded on the internet, and I was SOLD. Since I was scouring the internet for more of peak storytelling, I found my way into the Skybound comics, and it is Art. The entire premise of the story is driven by resource scarcity, and a long waging war that's wearing everyone down physically and mentally. So I absolutely loved the idea that every damage they took would never be easily recovered, so I was always on edge when reading, because the comics showed us on the first few pages, that the stakes are real. That's shown by Bumblebee's sudden and unceremonious death. I grew up as a 2000s who kept seeing the autobots in the movies as flawless with plot armor, and what would you know, Bumblebee was a secondary main character in the Bayverse films. Seeing him absolutey destroyed the moment starscream was reactivated was a point of inner clarity. That, for one, this was going to be a really good and honest story, even if I have no idea of the G1 transformers lore, I was SOLD. It's not that graphic violence enhances a story, but the honesty that it exists and should be confronted, is the sign of genuine story. We see Optimus Prime challenged by this dilemma of enacting violence in order to protect, that when he looks at his reflection he sees his enemy. That is further cemented by how he was left with no option but to wear Megatron's arm to replace his destroyed one. I got introduced with really great characters on both sides, all with unique personalities. As I've said, I never really caught up with the original transformers, which I have no biases towards who. It's a really welcoming story, and I find it heartbreaking that a good amount of fans hold disdain towards it.
Honestly, I’m excited for the next video. I’ll be there if it’s a premier, and if it’s a normal video, you’ll see me in the comments section. See ya around!
DWJ has become one of my favourite comic creators since I read Do a Powerbomb early last year since Pro Wrestling is one of my loves. Then when I found out he was doing a Transformers comic which is another one of my loves I knew I had to read it so it became the first comic I read issue to issue. Then I started reading the whole EU issue to issue.
Amazing analysis as always! Forgot it's been a year lol I went to a comic shop with my boyfriend and he asked if I could buy him issue one and he loved it
I think the one thing that drawned me the most, aside from just, the perfect way Optimus is written, is the deconstructive angle taken to the war between Autobots and Decepticons. It's nothing new, Animated for example already portrayed the Autobots as not exactly squeaky clean even if the Decepticons are mostly comical warmongers. But here though? It's depressing how much the autobots (and even the Decepticons even though they're the same conquerors as always) sink at times. Ratchet pragmatist advices to Prime are but a hint of what comes after, as is the fate of Jetfire, which is not exactly different of what Skywarp is put through by his family.
I have all of them in single issues. I'm up to date with the series. It honestly is one of my favourite on going comics. Definitely in the top 3 for me.
Nah, IDW went too tryhard and dense with their take on transformers.... it became bloated and overly complex. So the simplocity of skybound is very much welcome, even if it comes with more melodrama that we coulda skipped onto.
@ it would be interesting if they could bring back the friendship he had with blaster. The only thing is blaster was killed in issue five I believe. also, who would bring him alive again seeing as ratchet a little bit dead right now so no one can make gold bug
Im kinda new to transformers, i watched it as a kid but now i want to grasp the depth of it, so i wanted to ask what would be the best place to start, also for curiosity, what is your fav transfrormer and why?
I'd say the best place to start is just to enjoy Transformers Prime. It's a good show, especially if you want a peek into the pantheon of Transformers. Fav TF is Grimlock (atm), mainly cuz he's interesting as a character with his rage and tragedy.
I like skybound but one of my biggest BIGGEST problems w the comic is that the characters designs are just g1 ok it's not big like I do like seeing more of it thanks to dreamwave fumbling it's bag but at the same time I feel like it would be more hype if the designs were unique and embraced the art style
IDW was similar in the earlier issues. I imagine it’ll change in the coming years as the toy designs change, and the comic art will change as well to advertise the toys. It’s what IDW did.
I lost alot of my trust for transformers comics after IDW, I didn't trust this one at first because how dark and edgy it appears. But after reading it I find the story is really good and characters are very interesting. I find myself enjoy it very much. I'm not so sure about J.I.joe part thought, joes had me hating them in IDW era because how they treats Autobots. Also, I don't feel any transformer in this comic is actually gone, yet. Like, the energon repair technology looks too all powerful and anyone could be back at anytime.
To be honest IDW feels like fanfiction I mean I don't hate IDW but like a lot of characters are gay like IDW has good stories about war and some great character development but skybound take this concept and send it to high heavens
Personally for me. Skybound is not peak. It's a bit too dark for my taste, I prefer my transformers being a lot more silly and fun, or dealing with the politics of pre and post war.
I think Transformers being dark isn’t done enough. I get it’s technically a franchise for kids, but I think it can and should have more iterations where it’s darker and more mature.
@@dillydraws WFC Trilogy had some great ideas imo, just shitty execution. I understand if you disagree, not everyone has the same view of what they believe franchises should or shouldn’t be, and that’s alright.
@@Lolpy. Yeah, like for me, IDW did it the best with a mix of interesting political stuff and super cute and silly stuff along with dark parts that was just dull or boring. (then again, animated and idw is what got me into the franchise)
Tbf, it's a franchise about warfare, yes it can be fun and silly, but at its core, it's pretty fucking dark, hell that was even the case for the Original Marvel Comics
This Optimus embodies the line 'Be strong enough to be gentle' just like G1 Optimus did all those years ago. That's the element I love the most about Transformers in every media and Skybound captured it perfectly.
You have been a huge inspiration as for why I started my channel. Thanks for all the amazing content. Excited to hear what you think about this series
You make great vids so I’m glad what I do could be of some inspiration to other videomakers.

Starscream really is the Cybertronian Psycho, peak male performance even
Skybound needs to be animated! 2D animation just like style of X-Men 97
Why not invincible? It's simular and skybound can contract hasbro

I would kill for a “Cybertron Duology” remaster release of WFC and FOC

I think they should always be merged in comics, but yeah, it's way more complicated in TV or cinema
