That moment with Optimus and the deer, I know the writers fought so hard to keep it in and yeah, they did for a reason. That is Optimus Prime, he's still new to humanity but automatically he understands how fragile we are. This isn't the war-weary cynic of recent years, or the nutcase of Bay. That's Prime, at his core. Or spark, I suppose.
That was really such a strong sequence. And the fact we're like a year in and Soundwave still can't get a single one of those bastards to muster even a sliver of compassion for Ravage. It's pretty obvious where that's going, but the fact we don't even have to see it is another deer moment. That seemingly tiny thing that speaks volumes.
Heres another good Optimus quote that also shows Prime at his spark. From Transformers Armada, one of the onyl Transformers shows I've watched and in fact was the first one I ever watched when it aired on Cartoon Network on Toonami back in the day: "The reason we got into this battle with the Decepticons isn't to destroy them. Our goal has always been to see our friends the Minicons live a free life."
These issues are giving me major "The Iron Giant" vibes. Then again, the Giant is what happens if Optimus Prime and Superman do the Fusion Dance, so that tracks.
Skybound's first couple of issues are honestly some of the best Transformers storytelling in a good while. It is the perfect example of something that SHOULD in theory be terrible what with the brutality and so on but because it's written by grown-ass adults and not edgelords desperate to feel mature? It's genuinely compelling and heartfelt, the robots are actually characters, the human drama works and it's used in tandem with the robot story and doesn't overtake it. Weirdly, it feels the inverse of G2. In every way that comic is the 90s in all the worst ways, this one's genuinely thoughtful.
18:08 That panel really stuck with me after reading these issues and it just tugs at the heartstrings every time. Speaking as a hardcore TF fan, this Optimus was a breath of fresh air. A real problem with writing Optimus is generally it's much like writing Superman where it felt like for years people writing him just didn't get it. Either you got hyperviolent murder Prime like what was in the Bay films or you got an uncharismatic bore who spent his time speechifying and being stoic. This Optimus is the most human and caring take we've had in a long while. Him telling Sparkplug that he is mighty, showing no trace of superiority about his size and power is Optimus. Him showing remorse and regret over harming innocent life and a desire to learn about a new culture is Optimus. This is the Optimus Prime I wish we'd see more in Transformers media.
Optimus' line against Soundwave of "I seek peace, but I am no fool" still sticks with me. It paints a character who's not naive but still values fighting for an ideal with optimisim and kindness.
16:14 I totally imagine Starscream buying that mug for himself. As soon as he takes over the Decepticons he places the mug on Megatron's desk while laughing maniacally.

I wouldn't be surprised if the issues with IDW holding the license relate to Hasbro's woes. I love seeing new really good Transformers media that doesn't feel like it has to talk down to or water down themes for its audience. Transformers One and this comic series are such a brwath of fresh air, and I'm glad that the franchise is getting so much love and respect
This is very impressive, the humans were actually helpful and not a nuisance, Optimus is the right kind of being a good person but also willing to throw down and take names and be a badass like he's supposed to be, We actually get some violence that makes perfect sense and isn't overblown, Starscream finally gets to lead the decepticons and in typical star scream fashion he is screwing it up horribly and Optimus gets Megatron's arm and it is awesome as hell. I do love how the humans in the beginning they're not overly trusting of the autobots and they just point to the fact that it's a warand that means there are no good and evil but then you have that moment where Sparky's having that good heart-to-heart with Optimus and it feels like that they're connecting. Plus optimus transforming into vehicle mode for that little kid was so adorable as I'm pretty sure any kid would love to see a giant robot transforming into an alternate mode. Overall, this is a damn good version of Transformers and I hope this series doesn't get canceled!
28:14 Okay, legit it took me a second to realize that you said Scott Snyder and not ZACK Snyder. Nearly gave me a fright with that, Linkara. XD On a note relating to this comic, I find it interesting how Skybound seems to get Transformers while also having things be darker. This was a fun episode that I really enjoyed. I'll have to look for the other Skybound books.

13:18 Now I'm imagining Starscream doing it and now, instead of just shooting him once, Megatron just keeps pursuing him like some slasher just to keep shooting him, so now Starscream tells everybody to not say it so that Megatron can't find him
I'm really enjoying this series so far, especially the art style that does a fantastic job with showing motion and weight. I'm especially smitten with all the fun they had with the sound effects, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out!
Ok, what a magnificent thing to have in your background. Just, "You know the song." Literally nothing more needs to be said. The books get props for that alone.
Skybound Transformers is really awesome and badass and freaking fantastic and see Optimus prime do a wrestling move to one of the decepticons was really awesome and badass in my opinion.
Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I saw someone rip off their dangling arm to beat someone with, I'd have two nickels; it's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
These have been the first comics in a long time iv bought physically (as such can get the alternative covers which are really nice). First issue had me on the fence but its the second issue that really sold me on how good this version of prime is. Were all waiting on the redeco of him with megatrons arm. Glad you enjoyed them.
I love how the Energon Universe has been building up Megatron instead of having him be repeatedly defeated. Not to mention that Void Rivals teased Unicron and I can't wait for what that crossover will look like.
I love just how connected both G.IJoe & Cobra are to the Transformers in this new continuity, the formation of both being connected to the Autobots & Deceptions crashing on earth.
Having these connections all from the get-go with the consequences of one book affecting all the others is great universe cohesion and makes all of them worth reading. Even Void Rivals.
It’s interesting that this comic already assumes you know the story of the transformers and also fix some minor plot holes like how the ship apparently had enough energy to wake them up I’m glad it’s jetfire to do it
As a massive fan of skybound and IDW. It’s probably due to how drastically different they are ala. people were eating cake and surprised to be eating pie.
First, this seems like a cool new take on Transformers, like Armada tried to do, it shows the nature of war. However, while Armada focused on why both sides fight and tried to show the Decepticons as more complex despite their evil and greedy nature and how there is a chance they can actually work with the Autobots, as seen with the battle with Unicron, this series seems to be going for showing how brutal and cruel war can be but that you can't sacrifice your beleifs for victory and must always remember the innocent people you fight to protect like Optimus Prime here, reminds me a lot of my all time favorite TV show Star Wars the Clone Wars as it had a similar message. Also, while I don't read comics, so I don't know whats happening in these Transformers books, I'm calling it now given Soundwave geniunly care for Ravage and Optimus Prime's confrtation with him at the end here that there going to try and get Soundwave to join the Autobots like in that IDW Crossover Revaltions you review a while back, good review by the way. Second, how many Patreon Sponsered Reviews do we still have to get through? We've already done four in a row and now have another one next time. I mean grated this one and the last one were real good, but still, I'm woundering how many more we have to get through, I'm hoping we can at least get either a Clone Saga review or one Christmas review in before the year ends. Seriosuly, maybe consider next year in March instead of the usual retrospective you use March for some either quick Comic Book Quicks to catch up and get some easy stuff to produce to give yourself a break, or use it as a makeup month for stuff like DC Challenge, Batman Odeyss, the Clone Saga, or maybe Secret Origin Month or something.
The reason Laserbeak followed Carly was that she painted Prime’s face on the side of her van. In issue one she mentioned it seemed the art on the side was missing something.

Optimus Prime: Wait. Are you trying to tell me everybody's dead?
Teletraan 1: Wish I never revived him in the first place...
XD
On a note relating to this comic, I find it interesting how Skybound seems to get Transformers while also having things be darker. This was a fun episode that I really enjoyed. I'll have to look for the other Skybound books.
Soooooooooo I take it Bumblebee will NOT be a part of the Autobot forces for a while.........
Transformers is a literary work like Dracula or Frankenstein…yes I agree. Especially because Dracula and Frankenstein are Transformers now.
Happy to see more transformers coverage!
I absolutely loved these comics. The brutality, the heart, the sheer joy of hope and more. I loved it. Thank you for covering it Lewis! You're awesome 🙏😄
More than meets the comic book shelf
Daniel Warren Johnson always knows how to hit you right in the feels.
I have a friend who recommended I pick up this series. And now that ive seen the first 6 issues I think im going to look for it next time im at the comic shop
13:18
Now I'm imagining Starscream doing it and now, instead of just shooting him once, Megatron just keeps pursuing him like some slasher just to keep shooting him, so now Starscream tells everybody to not say it so that Megatron can't find him
Please tell me that Carly's Panel Van gets to be a Transformer and those fantasy images are akin to tattoos.
That would be cringe
@@Ihavethetouchsadly no
I'm really enjoying this series so far, especially the art style that does a fantastic job with showing motion and weight. I'm especially smitten with all the fun they had with the sound effects, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out!
25:18 Wow. Skybound adapted the G2 Optimus Prime commercial in just one page.
5:40 they do all have names like WWE
These have been the first comics in a long time iv bought physically (as such can get the alternative covers which are really nice). First issue had me on the fence but its the second issue that really sold me on how good this version of prime is. Were all waiting on the redeco of him with megatrons arm.
Glad you enjoyed them.
Cliffjumper at 16:30 is me when I see the damn Rick Roll! (not really, I laughed when that came up, I just wanted to point out Cliff in this panel)
Wow, we’re almost at the 50th anniversary for Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Wonder if that’s why you’re thinking about it?
I love how the Energon Universe has been building up Megatron instead of having him be repeatedly defeated. Not to mention that Void Rivals teased Unicron and I can't wait for what that crossover will look like.
Okay, the "You know the song" sound effect is great.
The Energon universe is awesome!!!
I'm really enjoying this new take on Transformers
100% thought that final joke was going to end up with "ANS HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!"
Well play with that Rick Roll, sir.
Lewis you would love Transformers One Its so good if you were turn off by the trailer they did not a great job showing how good the movie is.
Aww yeah! I have all the issues and the TPB of Skybound Transformers.
RICKROLLED IN 2024
15:10 Optimus has been awake in America for two hours and is already *literally* embracing his right to bear arms.
It’s interesting that this comic already assumes you know the story of the transformers and also fix some minor plot holes like how the ship apparently had enough energy to wake them up I’m glad it’s jetfire to do it
Optimus prime with megatrons fusion cannon arm goes hard AF
Always happy for a new episode of Atop The 4th Wall.
It's great to see him take a look at the new transformers comics. Now to get back to the godzilla comics.
Great stuff Linkara and keep up the amazing effort with the videos
The laugh thing you said might’ve been a joke, but I could see it being a great line.
A lot of Holy Grail references in this. Got to say I wasn't expecting that
14:05 "Scaling is a little bit off" Yup, that's Transformer alright.😉
With his love for Transformers, i'm really surprised there isn't an intro for the franchise like the one for when he covers Star Trek.
Check out his dedicated retrospective of the Marvel G1 comics then.
@@alexpryor2398Oh right! I should watch those again
Well, now that Devastator's lost a ring finger, maybe now he can get a hidden blade.
As a massive fan of skybound and IDW. It’s probably due to how drastically different they are ala. people were eating cake and surprised to be eating pie.
17:06-17:13 When I first read that scene I thought it was both shocking and completely in character for starscream
For a moment I feared that Linkara said that the next review would be of ZACK Snyder's Justice League.
HE DID IT
First, this seems like a cool new take on Transformers, like Armada tried to do, it shows the nature of war.
Oh hell yeah, I was gonna patreon this but I'm so glad someone else did first
You know it's a good day when Linkara uploads a new video
20:11 shattered glass reference
You're lucky unlike Civvie 11, Pollo won't shock you every time you reference Python.
Lewis, The liquid coming out of of Optimus Prime's forehead in the Transformers G2 #1 cover is supposed to be Energon, A.K.A Transformers blood and fuel, which is supposed to be that color, but it's primary dark blue in Transformers Prime.
I was pleasantly surprised with Skybound - I expected a Dreamwave crud fest, but instead got a well written series full of heart and with some great twists. It's a good series.
That's Nemesis Prime not Nega Prime. But Nega Prime does sound awesome. 😁
Just don’t let Crocker say the name
Considering this is the comic book company responsible for Invincible and Walking Dead it doesn't surprise me Transformers is one of best comics but I'm saying review those other comics we know how Image Comics is still called by you Youngblood Inc.
