I remember seeing this video 40 years ago and have sung the hook to myself in my head countless times - but just this second figuring out it is Howard Devoto!? Crazy!
when this song was sandwich with red guitar, once in a lifetime, ricky's hand , politic of dancing , lets all make a bomb , memorabilia , whole of the moon , ...Those were the days 1983
I too have this album, and I believe that I would argue that. I personally feel that “Cold Imagination” and “Some will pay (for what others pay to avoid)” are also masterfully crafted tunes, although as a devoted fan of Devotos from the days of Magazine, it may be that I am somewhat biased…
Does this involve a member of Magazine? I never would have thought this man was the inspiration of the Buzzcocks. Quite a gentler sound. Pure early 80s Euro ?pop? Quite nice
Love Devoto for his eccentricity of delivery. Love this song for its beauty. But Devoto as troubadour made me feel a little itchy in the late Magazine period. While liking it, nonetheless I can't hear this without something deep inside me having a small wince.
It wasn't so much his lack of being eye candy; more that he was too un-relatable. Too precious and, in my opinion, possessing too much of a nerdy, patronising, 'I'm-above-everything' demeanour. Look at Pete Shelley out of the Buzzcocks. He was as far removed from looking like a typical pop star as it's possible to be, yet pop star he (briefly) was. He was relatable. And had a sense of humour.
Everyone here is in an exclusive class of humans with great musical taste
your comment make me feel really good for a few minutes. Thank you so much, Treesloth.
I've loved this song for decades, and still find myself singing it randomly.
I’m on a Howard devoto binge on UA-cam again and it’s just as satisfying as always
Such a heart wrenching song full of angst. If you're been there before, you'll easily recognize it again.
Been a fan since 'Spiral Scratch' ! dx

Such a memory of my first year in college and WFNX in Boston - and also such an amazing song.
This song gets better as time moves forward.
The best days of KROQ FM❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

The drum track is a LinnLM1, unmistakable and remarkable sound! 😀

This man is a genius.
Yes he is !!!
I strongly disagree.
@@blackmore4 no one cares

Genius.
Howard's moment of cuteness...
1:23 - the red umbrella is so radical! :)
Wonderful song!! Very good. UK.
A pop masterpiece.
Why do I love this song? Came out of nowhere then went back...
One of the best singles ever released. I have the album it came from, and unfortunately none of the other songs are as good as this.
I admire you is a beautiful song
yeah, have to agree, the rest of the album pales in comparison
It had it's moments , the songs were very good , it was a very bland production ! It had no edge to it .

83 fave..."I am on fire"
Loved this during 1991. Found this music in 2021. Now I'm playing this in a loop. Chorus and keyboard really got me. I'm young again!
Wow. I haven't heard this in years.
Still got the 12' vinyl. Class
Estupendo tema que vengo oyendo durante años... una canción indeleble que no la quito de mis repertorios musicales de vida
memories of manhattan beach, ca., summer of 1983.
Anis Shivani Ha ha, oh yes KROQ!

I owned the single of this (ask your parents). Had no idea there was a video.

Clearly an Eno inspiration
I have always dreamed of these two guys making a record together.

@David Simon VERY good😃
2 years and the Champlain Towers were built, & I was working @ #TheSteamworks as cashier & part-time DJ.

More likely KUSF
I am here because I'm an Apollo 440 fan.
why was the lyrics "my brains a leaky boat" removed from the video version??
those lyrics are classic!!!

yes, Mr. Devoto was in Magazine as well as in the Buzzcocks.
Unique.
Sehr cooler Song. Aztec Cameras Somewhere in my heart ist auch ähnlich cool. Leider ist das hier der einzige Knaller von ihm.
While Howard is the main man in the video surely this still counts as a Magazine song.
Brill.
Dave Formula on keys!
actually i know a grl like that-a mirage...hate and love are close together

The pigeon thinks it's a duck!
Was Howard just too unattractive to be a big star ? For all his music is sublime !
