  • Ever wonder what types of pastels you should use? Or what types of paper or surfaces are best to work on? Because there are so many choices having very different results, I have made this video to help wade through the abundance of products. This video should not only help the beginner, but the intermediate pastel painter as well. I also hope to save you some money in not having to experiment so much like I did. Happy Painting!
    Papers:
    Canson MiTientes Touch: shrsl.com/42y8... 400 Sanded Pastel Papers (I now use this instead of UArt paper):
    Sennelier LaCarte Pastel Card:
    Ampersand Pastelbord:
    Homemade Surfaces Playlist:
    Pastels: (in hard to soft order)
    *Note: I always recommend getting half sticks whenever possible. You get more color choices for the money.

      Gary Mindy, I am a 74 year old retiree. A geology by training who’s had a lot of Art college work as well. I started taking a drawing course at my local university in January, until half way through the semester, the Covid19 pandemic took hold. The time I spent with the students and the teacher was priceless. I am sorry that the university had to go to online classes. Not the same experience I was having. So I am canceling out of it.

    This helped this 68 yr old experienced pastelist since I just started back in to them after a long absence. I have old Grumbacher pastels I bought just a few at a time plus NuPastels, a set of medium stick pastels and a newer set of Rembrants. I am learning color. Been working since last fall and now am ready to try some new things. For practice I bought a pack of construction paper. Surprisingly it holds quite a bit of pastel for cheep paper. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

      JeanettsFarm wonderful! So glad you are back to creating with pastels 👍🏻👍🏻. That is interesting about construction paper. I’m actually not surprised that it can hold a few layers. I love to use cheaper supplies to practice on. Will have to try. Blessings and Happy Painting!!

    Just to add a tip, you CAN'T USE WATER ON SENNELIER LA CARTE! It is the one coated or sanded surface I know of that water will absolutely destroy. Don't even sneeze on it. Don't breathe too close if your mouth is moist, because even the tiniest droplets dissolve the binder that holds the coating on. Bare patches can be fixed with a tiny dab of Art Spectrum Multi Media (Colourfix) Primer, but that's a stop gap. It is the one flaw in an otherwise wonderful surface, because La Carte also has a particularly grabby clingy soft surface that takes lots of layers and gives its own sweet results. As long as you keep it dry. I'd recommend it more for dry climates too.

I'm going to do this exercise so I have a better understanding of how my colors mix. I've also found that harder pastels are great to use when mixing or blending colors such as skys. Only because so many well known pastel is recommend that you never touch them with your fingers because you loose the vibrancy of the color

      @monetcafe  7 років тому +1

      Awesome!! I'll have to check out that video! Thanks! I do mix my pastels while painting, but not in the typical manner as in oil or acrylic painting. First time I tried I thought the paper was ruined so I through it out. The second time I let it dry for 48 hours and all the crease vanished. Cartridge paper to me is ordinary drawing paper. Applied the PVA, Pumice and Acrylic mixture with a roller. The paper which was taped down to a 12mm plywood board buckled left it dry Still taped down at room temperature for 48 hours and it went back flat. I acquired 50 sheets of A1 size cartridge paper for not very much. I prepare a complete sheet at a time let it go touch dry then tape another sheet to the other side of the 12mm plywood board and coat that with the PVA mix then stand it on edge. Allowing both sheets to dry. naturally. I use a small 4-inch roller to apply the PVA mix as you can buy in a hardware shop. But it is important not to get the paper too wet. Even a failure there is a good drawing area available without creases. which can be cut out.

    I use Rembrandt, Sennilier, NuPastel, Pan Pastel, and pencil pastel for my paintings, but I couldn’t hear what is your favorite paper - the yellowy one at the top. Also, I’m severely hard-of-hearing and I am wondering if it is possible if you could present closed caption without disturbing the view of the pigment application? Also, what review can you give on Pan Pastel?

      Without going back and watching the video I think it was probably Uart sanded paper. But here lately I actually like a paper called a fisher 400 grit. It’s almost exactly like Uyou art, but it doesn’t curl. I buy mine from pro art panels.

    Thank you so much! This was a wonderful help to learn about papers and pastels. I would like to know, when you show your pastels, or sell them, do you frame them under glass, or what exactly do you do? If someone aspires to participate in art league shows one day, how would you show your pastel pieces?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  Рік тому

      Hi Sheri,
      I always recommend framing under glass for permanent storage, but To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ua-cam.com/video/4XD4SezFyBg/v-deo.html&t=209s

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  3 роки тому

      Pastels may not adhere to the surface of the print. But I often use a product called “clear Gesso“ to paint on a surface to give it some texture so that I can apply pastels. You could give that a try.

      I haven't tried any water or inks to the Mi-Teintes paper and I would have thought they didn't take water very well, but I found this very interesting thread where an artist did tests on various surfaces (including Mi-Tientes) and it seemed that liquid mediums were okay. Thank you Liza, yes Neocolors II are definitely artist grade quality & made with real pigments. They have a high degree of lightfastness and you definitely get what you pay 💰 for. I just wish they were less expensive, but at least I know I can rely on them.
      Lately, I have been experimenting with them as the initial underbase & I love how pigmented they are & how much coverage I can get.

    Hi, thanks for the great video. I have a question- if you painted a landscape for example, would you start with a harder pastel for the background and then apply a softer pastel on top? How then would you add fine details, I’m asking that because it would be more difficult to put pastel pencils or hard pastels over softer pastels. Hope that makes sense! Any help is much appreciated! Thank you.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  5 років тому +3

      That's a great question, and while there are no firm rules to this, it is typically better to use medium to hard pastels first (or as an underpainting) and the softest pastels like icing on a cake. Also, if you haven't overworked your surface you can usually still have enough tooth to lay down fine lines at the end... such as flower stems, grasses, etc. Sometimes, however, we have to work with what we have and usually we can work around these issues as long as we don't over-layer our surface. Hope that helps!

    Hi! Thank you for having a channel! I am new to pastels and I bought some inexpensive
    VERY soft half sticks, 64, and they have a non-toxic version for children. They label these for artists and I would say they are low artist grade. But since I will be working with cheaper, self treated watercolor paper, I am putting more money into the NU Pastels, 96 and Stabilo 48 Pencil sets. I tend to be heavy handed and filled the tooth of my paper in 3 layers last night. I want a few more if I can get them for corrections, underpaintings and sso forth. I think I need a firmer pastel so I dont fill in the tooth too soon. Does that make sense to you? Thanks for your reply. I am getting the cheap Canson paper, it's what Amazon sells, and I wont find it so expensive I cant try it and use it. I always buy the correct paper for a new medium, so I can see how to adjust my papers with gesso or other grounds to work.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  7 років тому +4

      TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV .... so glad you are trying pastels! They are a wonderful medium. You are correct that using the harder pastels in the beginning stages is best. They don't fill up the tooth as much. However the softer pastels apply more easily at the end. If you are using low-grade soft pastels they won't apply as beautifully and effectively as the better artist grade brands. You should join our group on Facebook. It's a closed group for Monet café subscribers where we share our art and learn from each other! You will have to ask to join, but I will gladly except you in our group.

    30 years ago my husband bought me a massive wooden box of Rembrant pastels. I have never used them but since retiring last year I would love to start painting. Only prob is no confidence and the size of the pastels scare me. How do I start???

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  5 років тому

      Rembrandts were the first pastels I stared with. It's best to start small ... 5" x 7" or 6" x 8" and just do some little studies... not trying to create a masterpiece.
