- 🚀 History of Space Travel: Looking to the Stars - What do Ptolemy and ancient Chinese rockets have in common? Without either of these things, space flight wouldn't be possible! In order to understand how we started traveling amongst the stars, we have to talk about how we started studying stars in the first place. Since the very first civilizations, we've always looked at the night sky with wonder & curiosity but also as a way to try and understand the future and time itself.
Start your Warframe journey now and prepare to face your personal nemesis, the Kuva Lich - an enemy that only grows stronger with every defeat. Take down this deadly foe, then get ready to take flight in Empyrean! Coming soon! bit.ly/EHWarframe

I wanna know more about the madman that recorded the sunspots!
So grossly incandescent!
We don't have a specific astrologer that recorded them, unfortunately! The earliest recordings are from 28 BCE, during the reign of Emperor Chen and the best we can guess, it was most likely a group of astronomers who were working for the Emperor. (hopefully minimizing the damage to their eyes!) What's really cool is that they did accurately predict the occurrence of sunspots, approximately every 11 years. - A
I found an article says that the first one who recorded the sunspots was Gan De in 364 BC. And for regularly recording, it was the official astronomers in 28 BC, which has been answered.
@@extrahistory can you at least tell how they didn't ruin their eyes looking at the sun? The last eclipse there were warnings about don't look directly at the sun. Or you will be sorry. And I heard some people were.

"We all look to the stars"
Light pollution, mate.
We all look TO the stars. Not that you actually see them!
Also there are a few other things that all humans do.
@@dacypher22 We look towards the stars without intention of looking AT the stars, knowing we can't see them. Therefore we don't look to the stars because we're staring in their general direction but not themselves. If you stared at a person, you look at him, but if you stare at the space around him, you're looking in his general direction, which does not equal looking at him.
And? I still can look to the stars 🤦
@@curtiswong7280 "knowing we can't see them" what part of Mad Max fog-smudged Beijing industrial surburb are you living in? Like yeah, hard to see stars if your skyline is filled with skyscrapers and casinos somewhere in the middle of Vegas but even there, you can literally look away from downtown. Are there places people actually cannot see stars when looking away from the bright lights? Cause in Europe I see stars at night in a city with over a million population, and it's easier to see them outside of huge ass cities.
"You like cheese, don't you?" Judging by the melee rework, I'mma say space mom's not a fan. Can't wait for the next one!

Ex astris scientia - Starfleet Academy, "We look to the stars."
That doesn't seem like the correct translation. Astris does mean stars but scientia is knowledge and not anything to do with sight or looking. Ex is roughly "out of" or from. So it would more literally be "from stars, knowledge" which could probably be more understandably translated to "from stars comes knowledge" or even more verbosely "from stars we derive knowledge".
This man is truly insane, either that or the new Empyrean update also includes a massive overhaul to the archwing, what sort of madman would VOLUNTEER to do the archwing part when you could be doing LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE!?
I love this channel so much! I'm looking forward to this series! Thanks for all your hard work!
"Do not stare into the sun."
This sign can't stop me because I can't read.
I find it funny I'm learning Warframe news from extra credits, i had no idea they were doing something so cool
You guys should make “fail faster” notebooks and sketchbooks, or extra credits beanies. This would be great for your store
I’m really looking forward to this series.
YES! YES! So much this! As someone working to be an astronaut and is a huge fan of EC. . . I love that you guys are picking this history to go over. Thank you so much! (I know it wasn't your intent to make my year specifically . . .but you just did. *Sits and listens and watches in wide eye'd child like enjoyment.)
This is my favourite series of Extra History!! 😎😎
Ive been waiting for something like this for so long. Thanks for bringing this as a new section. I have some space knowledge so this will be fun for me to learn more.
I clicked on this to see your take on "if only we had taller been", c'mon you can't ignore that beautiful poem
I love everything about this.
Just a MASSIVE mistake here, you said the main in Britain was looking to the heavens, when he should have been looking at the rainclouds.
6:57 OMG than you for the best definition of a revolution I seen: "Let's improve stuff!.. YEAH!!!" It's just. That. Simple.
I'm so happy this is a series!
Hell Yes I don't know how many of these we're gonna get but I'm gonna enjoy every second of it.
I’ve played warframe for 6 years+ it’s the greatest I’ve played ever I love it so much and the fact they sponsored you is AMAZING AND SO COOL!!
Just made my week so much better
Thank you so much for this series! I feel that despite huge advances being made towards space travel and colonization these days, so many people are disillusioned with the prospect that it really saddens me. Hopefully this can turn that around a bit.
Still one of my favorite series' of yours, especially so with the Warframe crossover! Loved hearing and seeing SpaceMom Lotus in your style.
Would love to see more fun crossovers with fictional worlds and history! History of martial arts/wrasslin with the Rumbleverse folks? Or some other cool thing!
My two favorite things all in one video! Well done!
I loved this ad way way too much.
I've been a fan of astronomy since I was a little kid, so this video was a really nice surprise for me!
I really hope you mention mesoamerican and andean advances in astronomy
YESSS. THATS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR...YES FINALLY... I thank you Extra Credits, i thank you so much.
*Stares at the night sky for 15,000 years*
“Aha. Circles.”
as someone who loves this channel and also loves astronomy this series is a god send.
I love this channel because they don’t portray ancient civilizations as lesser or different civilizations as wrong but just as the way they are, different from our era
Epicycles are essentially terms in a series expansion of the elliptical orbits, and if you add enough higher order terms (i.e. epcicycles on epicycles) and you end up with a _really_ good approximation
Just when I took a WF break. Grendal here I come.

YAY, AS AN AEROSPACE ENGINEER THIS WILL BE MY NEW FAVORITE SERIESA
I'm glad about this series.
Interesting topic but When is there going to be a extra history on Julius Caesar we were promised this back when Dan was still around
The patrons have voted against it about 3 times but hopefully it will happen one day.
As someone who loves the idea of going to space, I'm all about this series.
Back during the time, the pyramids of Giza (+a couple others) and the Nile lined up almost perfectly to mirror the Milky Way and important stars.
Learned that during a college course and am still blown away by it,
"there's one thing all humanity shares we look at the stars"

Or sight impaired.
Extra Credits + Warframe? A surprise to be sure but a welcome one.
Boy am I glad I got into 'space-stuff'. Thanks, KSP!
Loving the art, so crisp. Also, I'm curious if the active participation of staring at the Sun left any sort of traceable impact from a ophthalmalogist's field of work.
Hell yeah, space ninjas! Wasn't expecting a Warframe plug in this video.
When Aliens see all this going in from Space.

It’s odd that you refer to Rome falling at that date when you have made series on the Byzantines.
I think he was referring to the Western Empire.
3:19 nice one, animator! 😎
"and the light of learning passed out of Europe"
Eastern Roman Empire: *am I a joke to you*
Yeah it's almost like the Eastern Roman Empire was mostly in Asia, huh?

OMG did Rebecca Ford do the voice of Lotus for this one? Absolutely incredible. "Ah yes, Zoe's pet." I love this.
hi i love watching your show and I love Astronomy and want to be one when im older
Do a series on the Fall of North Song, it was a good story
Good episode!
(It did weird me out though, I was playing Warframe when I started the vid, so Lotus cameo confused my poor tired brain for a few moments.)
Actually, with very simple geometry, we can find that if both the Earth and Mars circle the Sun, the position of Mars in relation to the Earth would be given by the "wheels on wheels". That's why Ptolomey's model is so accurate, because it's right, but putting the Earth as the frame of reference instead of the Sun. What was discovered by Copernicus was that the point the Earth and the other planets moved around coincided with the sun.
I find it oddly satisfying that you guys did the Mayan Empire right before my history class went over it, and are starting the history of space exploration right after we wrapped up our half semester dive into astronomy in my physics class. . .
It's all a conspiracy, I tells ya!
(By the way, the video uploaded literally right before class started where we went over the last test)
Just wanna say kudos for placing the Deathly Hollows in the video as part of a geometry joke.
As an amateur astronomer i really happy that you made this video
8:40 I was really hopeful that he was making an outer worlds reference
