    Dont forget about the huge nutrition you get from eating the leaves. Theyre delicious in soups or just as any green leaf veg.
    So even if you cant get the actual sweet potato (kumara in NZ) to fruit then you still have all the leaves to harvest.
    And you just go to your kumara patch and take the leaves whenever you want them during the growing season.
    You can blanche the leaves then freeze them and use them as a superfood in a smoothie.
    👍🏻

    You've got such a big, beautiful harvest there! I grew organic sweet potatoes in 4-gallon buckets last year and it was such fun to go on a "treasure hunt" in those buckets at the end of the season. The largest potatoes seemed to prefer the very bottom of the buckets, so it was a thrill to dump them out. Every bucket had nice usable potatoes in it, and, of course I re-use the soil to make new compost for the next season's buckets. I use the methods and tips from the book "All My Secrets of Organic and Container Gardening So Far." Thanks, Wendi!

    I grow my sweet potatoes in plastic laundry baskets lined with landscape cloth with a good soil/sand well-draining mix. The bottom of the laundry basket retains a bit of rain (live in New England; ample rain,) while the landscape cloth and open basket mesh insures it doesn't get soggy.

    Thats awesome. I hope you find this info helpful. If you keep your really old sweet potatoes growing they will produce flowers and really good seeds. If you plant the white varieties and the purple, when they cross pollinate you get Sweet Potatoes that have like a purple and white marble effect. Save some of your own seeds and try. Its so much fun to watch tiny seed grow into enormous sweet potato. The older plants 2-3 years old will flower much earlier in the year so plenty of time for seeds to ripen. When they flower they really do not like the roots disturbed though so just grow some in a separate area just fo seed production. You can produce your own varieties that no one else has got. I do this with Yams, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes and normal potatoes. I would encourage any one to have a go.

      Okinawan is almost guaranteed to flower. I think that is the type you have there. The Japanese Purple one. If you cut it, does it have white and purple streaks? If so that is one of the types I grow. If you see the seed capsules just leave them until they start to turn brown. The seeds will keep for years. I just planted some 4 year old seeds last week and they already grow 1 inch tall.

    I've seen them grow in a long mound. It's probably easier to harvest, also to avoid being too wet. I've also seen them grow in a medium of just a mixture of sawdust, sand with little soil, and harvesting is a lot easier. Also, I wonder if you cure them before eating?

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  6 років тому +1

      Yes, Curing is key. There’s a video about that. Growing on mound is good advice for places that rain often. In our garden we use water very conservatively so too wet is never an issue. Haa

    How long does it take for you to get a harvest where you are? Nobody here in the Bay Area grows sweet potatoes that I know of, everyone says it's not hot enough. However, in San Diego (where the weather is always mild, hardly ever hot) I had a friend grow them successfully.

    • @susangarcia6233
      @susangarcia6233 6 років тому +2

      You can grow them in the cooler zones, like I did last year. (See my post up above). You just make the "starts" indoors a month or more early, then put them in buckets so that you can MOVE them into the hottest parts of your patio or backyard as the sun position changes from spring to fall. I also LEFT mine growing in the buckets as long as possible, until a night freeze was forecast, which means you don't have to actually harvest them until September or even October sometimes (so that they get the longer sun exposure).

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  6 років тому +2

      That’s exactly it, Susan! @feralkevin Inland San Diego can get quite warm, just the Bay Area stays a bit cooler, but it’s probably warmer than where it is north of us. Inland of San Diego is dry and warm. Buy time by growing the slips indoor is a great tip! Happy Gardening!

    • @mikeramos5709
      @mikeramos5709 6 років тому

      feralkevin Bro it gets hot and humid in the inland bay area and even in San Diego. If it's too cool start them indoors and then bring them outdoor when it's warmer.

    Hi Wendi. Thank you for your videos. I do have a question... I have grown regular potatoes by just cutting and separating the potato into pieces so that each growth that has developed is on a potato piece, and I just plant the whole piece and the growth together... can I do that with sweet potatoes? or do I have to actually separate the growth from the original sweet potato and then plant just the growth leaving behind the piece of sweet potato... Thanks!

    • @FoxTenson
      @FoxTenson 4 роки тому +1

      Sweet potatoes aren't actually potatoes so they won't grow like normal ones! Its rare a planted sweet potato will make more potatoes. You need to plant the slips for production and good harvests, and just one sweet potato making slips can make more than a normal potato diced up in regards to plants. If you are only after the leaves then the planted whole sweet potato will make plenty of those.

    • @moonbee03
      @moonbee03 4 роки тому +1

      @@FoxTenson Wow... well... I planted it and went through the process as if it was a normal potato and got a crazy amount of sweet potatoes out of one single one! I harvested about five or six month later.

    • @FoxTenson
      @FoxTenson 4 роки тому

      That is pretty rare to get many off of them planting that, you had some good luck! Congrats! I've always found, read, and been told slips were the way to go, I've never had luck using a piece of sweet potato. If they did produce any they were small or oddly shaped.

    • @chinatownboy7482
      @chinatownboy7482 2 роки тому +1

      What happens in nature? An animal does not come along, put a sweet potato in a jar of water, then pluck off the slips to soak in another jar of water to develop roots. In the wild, the sweet potato in the ground develops more slips. The slips grow. More roots develop on those slips. The roots then swell to become the next potato. All without human help. The reason to grow slips, develop them, and replant them is that if your sweet potato grows 6 slips, they are all condensed in 1 area. They will intertwine, compete for the nutrients in the limited space, and produce fewer and smaller sweet potato. You may only get a bunch of 1" thick skinny roots all bundled together. If you take those same slips, space them 2 feet apart, those 6 slips can go into a 4'X8' garden bed, and yield a whole bed full of sweet potato.

    I noticed there was no mention of curing. Mine taste awful and bland unless I’ve cured them. How do you cure yours?

      Carol Ann Skjellerup I will be making another video about curing them. I keep them in a dark cool area indoor for about 2-3 weeks at least. Harvesting them when it starts to get cold would get them a little sweeter too.

    Hi wendi, I bought some sweet potatoes from the Asian market hoping to grow slips from them...but it's been over a month and still no slips. I've tried three different methods (leaving them out exposing them to light, putting the ends in water, and just putting it straight in soil) but still no luck. Any suggestions?

      In one of my sweet potato episodes, I’ve explained that some sweet potatoes may have been irradiated so the tuber won’t sprout. Or if it’s not organic, it has been sprayed with chemicals to extend shelf life. Get organic sweet potatoes or ones from farmer’s market then try again. Good luck!

      You can put a cover over it (like metal nets). Be sure to leave lots of growing space though. Self Sufficient Me channel did this in his 'grow sweep potato in a pot' video

      I use tulle to keep squirrels out. They don't like getting caught in the fabric.
