You can't see Ernst's voice, who is also the pianist, due to the zoom in but when they kiss for a second time Ernst's voice spins in his chair out of happiness over his new found love. That's why the audience laughs.
Andy is pretty much the only Hanschen actor to truly play the role with all its subtleties and make the scene a careful balance of humor and real intimacy.
Navy Gaming I prefer Andy’s more nuanced performance, cause you can actually tell he’s very much a fourteen year old trying to convince the recipient of his affections that their love isn’t evil or wrong whereas Jonathan, as he joked way back when the musical first opened, played Hanschen as a seductress who corrupts Ernst. Which made me uncomfortable because that’s an actual harmful stereotype about bisexual people.
This whole conversation works so well in ASL. The "you're laughing" moment, and the intimacy of the signs, sharing them on different bodies... I can't stop re-watching this.
I like this scene more in the dwsa than the obc; not only does the sign language make everything more intimate, but their relationship in this is portrayed as more genuine and sincere then in the original, and you can tell hanschen really cares for Ernst, which makes this scene more rewarding overall.
You can uplift an audience with pleasant things. You don’t have to always got to comedy for that. This puts me in a better mood than the OBC because they cheapened and mocked it wayyy too much.
@@Therebesquare imagine thinking Spring Awakening was a musical created to put people in good moods. It's a tragic story of toxic behaviors and irresponsible characters.
I adore how this production combines both humor and genuine affection... so many productions (even the original) just make it funny. Hanschën IS kind of self-absorbed and silly, but he does really care for Ernst, I think. He can do both. He doesn't have to just want to get into Ernst's pants for his character to work. I think it's much more interesting this way, and certainly more rewarding.
The way Andy says "and so you should" is just.. It's sweet, it's not condescending, it's in a reassuring way, as if to tell Ernst "you should, it's okay to" and I just love it so much
Poppy Larkspur I think that line is so underrated because when done properly, it really takes the time period into consideration. I always thought that a lot of Ernst's apprehension comes from the fact that what they were doing was extremely frowned up on and illegal, and I always saw that line as hanschen saying "it shouldn't be, this is just as lovely and natural as anything else."
I love that in this version! I loved the OBC too; where Hanschen talks about emotion in his haughty monotone and is super narcissistic, but I love the sweet take here as well.
How Andy manages that perfect slide across the piano will always remain pone of life's great mysteries, but I just noticed that he very slowly moves closer to Ernst later in the scene, also without using his hands or with his knee seeming to bend. This just adds to my theory that he is sat on some thin sliding panel aided by a mechanism. The only other explanation is that Andy Mientus has a secret hidden talent for sliding across pianos, which would be strange.
Izzy Maurer there are Lon boards at the back of a piano that resemble 2x4s. He hooked his foot onto one of those. The top of the piano is heavily lacquered in general so it's easy to slide across.
Lol I always thought there was just someone hiding behind the piano that pulled Andy forward. I guess you could say I thought someone was pulling his leg😂
Scenes like this can only be fully pulled off in the Deaf West version - using ASL really helps not only get the scene across perfectly but adds so much to it (that whole skimming-off-the-cream thing...)
Can somebody please explain to me the meaning of the cream thing? Why does everyone think that it's the gayest thing ever? I feel as tho I'm missing something…
I love at 2:15 when Ernest leans away from Hanschen, Daniel David Stewart goes to the higher end of the piano, even though Ernest is at the low end. It reinforces his voice wanting to go with Hanschen, in a way
@@medusa-zz6wj It could also be because they know their relationship won't last (realistically speaking), so he doesn't want to talk about the risks they're taking by being in a relationship. He wants to savor this moment with Ernst, so he doesn't want to talk about wounds and bruises.

By far my favorite version of this song. Like, Josh and Andy have such excellent chemistry. In past productions, I feel like Hanschen and Ernst are kind of just static characters, but this performance makes them feel like they have a richer plot going on here, it makes you wonder if they're hurtling toward a destructive end, like Wendla and Melchior, or if, maybe, they'll be okay? Well anyways I've watched this and analyzed it way more than I'd like to admit so now it's time to sleep.
I’m sorry to say it but it most likely didn’t end well. What the people made Wendla do when she got pregnant was had enough, imagine someone finding out about these two... it hurts me to say, but it probably ended bad. Trust me, I would love to think they were okay, but that most likely wasn’t the case....
David Wilds what if they lasted into the 30’s as two old men, then were discovered as being gay and sent to the concentration camps during the holocaust? I mean.. theyre 15ish in the 1890’s, the 30’s-40’s is only 40-50 years later... what a sad ending
This is easily my favourite version of this song as they don't try and make it funny or mimic what the original cast did. It's so tender and loving which feels far more truthful. This proves that you can have a slightly cocky H and shy E (don't know how to spell the names) and it still be really affectionate
I totally understand your frustration, Spring Awakening is a much more complex and high level story, but to be fair, a show about depressed, suicidal teenagers and abortions might not be the right tone for a school
i literally cant stop watching this. the asl mixed with the music is absolutely breathtaking, especially the way he signs “your bruise” on the other guys body, it’s so intimate
I love this cuz it really captures the intimacy that belongs in that scene. Some parts *are* meant to be funny but its really beautiful and i like this version a lot more than any others
hanschen taking ernst's hand and guiding it through the sing language is the equivalent of hanschen taking ernst's mic in the obc - it's at the same line too 'I'm gonna bruise you'
i just LOVE how andy denies with his head looking at josh’s hand in the third kiss like “no, we don’t have to worry about this, about bruising each other because WE LOVE EACH OTHER”
This is my favourite version of Spring Awakening! It has that intimacy and the subconscious (within the voice actors) that you don't see in the others. Honestly, the ASL adds that extra layer of sweetness
This is so great for so many reasons, the intimacy, the interactions between Josh and Daniel, the changes they made to portray this in a sweet and actually healthy way- and also the fact that no matter how many times I've watched this production as a whole, there are still things I pick up even in small numbers. Like, the fact that Andy doesn't sign the "you can't be serious" and Ernst can only see him say "You're such a sentimentalist" adds to the character development even if it's just one sentence hhhhhh
Wow... this was rather sweet. And it's interesting the vastly diferent vibe and tone between this recording and the one in Stage Dork, with also Andy and Josh. In the StageDork one, Hanschen come off more as a manipulative person, who while might feel something as affection/atraction for Ernst doesn't REALLY care for him as a real person; in fact, you can read a lot of condescendetion, dismissiveness (snorting and pushing away Ernst hand at the implication of being possibly wounded by him) and smugness in his overall lenguage (he even sounds more angered in the moment he thought was been rejected). In here, he is more like a flirting person completly smitten by someone he think is naïve and completly adorable, and trying to be noticed by all means, being more sweet and intimate than eerie and cornering. Those are my two cents
You can’t see it in this video but in the end of the song Ernst (Josh Castille) hops off the piano and goes to kiss and hug his voice( David) and goes off with Hanschen holding hands... that’s so sweet ❤️
This has to be my favorite version of this scene ever produced. It isn't played for laughs and the ASL adds so much intimacy to the scene that can't be found in any other versions. These actors are perfect for their respective roles and they do a good job of adding a layer of authenticity and realism to these characters which in other productions (at least to me) lack those things.
this is such a different rendition of this scene. in non deaf spring awakening, hanschen is a representation of the anti-hero of the play othello, othello and him kissing and toying with ernst is showing what othello did to desdemona. the connection between othello and hanschen is shown in my junk which is comedic but crucial to his character. in this version, it seems as if hanschen isn’t othello, and that he has lost every trait othello has that he had. he, like othello breaks a heart (not by killing in othellos case but he does break a heart) but unlike othello, in the original, he does not feel remorse for playing with ernst’s feelings. i think that dwsa hanschen is more of himself, without all the baggage that comes with being othello. hanschen and ernst have been stripped of their roles in othello and become people in dwsa and i think that’s why this scene works so well.
Honestly I love this so much I can't even explain it. Like this production did so well with Hanschen and he's my favorite character and ugh I'm just really happy and I just really love Andy Mientus.

I just discovered this version and I love it so much! I just keep watching it because it makes Ernst and Hanschen's relationship so layered and perfect
This song gives me chills every time I listen. It’s so unique and just so... sweet. It makes me sad how I’m never gonna achieve this level of perfection. I know that it probably ended badly, but this gives me hope. And the melodies, the harmonies. So unique to this song. It’s special. It truly is. I love it. No other way to describe it.
god i love this performance so much more. i feel like in earlier production in the 2000’s, this was a joke to the audience. this scene has so much more true intimacy and is taken seriously for what it is.

I second this
every couple days i come back to this video and cry bc i love this sm
IM CRYING IN THE CLUB HE PULLED CLOSER ON TRUST ME AND THEYRE SO CUUUUTE
I never thought about it but DDS starts playing the song while still saying lines like a LEGEND
And they ride off into the sunset on a piano
they just pull a grease and fly into the sun on the piano
This version makes me sob in the best way every time. Not many productions take their relationship seriously and this is just so fucking beautiful, plus I'm just so gay for Josh and Andy and aaahhhh
andys hanschen is the best ever. He gives him so much depth
Okay but, when Daniel whacks the keys, the look Andy gives him is AMAZING xDDDD
The amount of times I’ve watched this is probably unhealthy but I love the chemistry between Hanschen and Ernst in this production...
This is the purest thing I have ever seen
josh castille is the most adorable human
I want this musical as a movie.
my life is a lie, I just realized this is from the pre-broadway production! I could only tell by the uniform they're wearing
If anyone has read Carry On, tell me I'm not the only one who sees Hernst as a kind of parallel to Snowbaz
Elina Marie .... Bless you I completely see where you're coming from
I'M SCREAMING THIS IS WHY I LOVE THE INTERNET
Elina Marie yEs
IS BAZ ERNST HDJDJDJDJ
thespianreads OMG I HOPE SO
I just discovered this version and I love it so much! I just keep watching it because it makes Ernst and Hanschen's relationship so layered and perfect
This remains to this day the most beautiful video I have ever seen in my life
This is SO much better than the original. So much more beautiful. I am IN LOVE this revival.
This is honestly so beautiful.
I shouldn't have started laughing. I just imagined if Andy had fallen while climbing on the piano
Andy as Hanschen is honestly the most hilarious/ best thing ever! I love him so much get amazing ♡♡
He's*
I love this so much it's hurting me
I've been learning sign language for over a month and I can finally do this song!
I keep on coming back to this - dwsa will always be my favourite version, it is just so so well done
I have now watched this every day for this week??
I might have an obsession...
Oh well!
Might as well watch it all year
This is the reason why I'm still alive. Honestly, Andy is AMAZING and I just love this whole song anyways uuUUUUUUGHAHAHAHHHH
god i love this performance so much more. i feel like in earlier production in the 2000’s, this was a joke to the audience. this scene has so much more true intimacy and is taken seriously for what it is.
Smart part of me says 'amazing directing and acting and vocals and simp part of me says 'hehe they're both hot'
