i still can't believe this wasn't even nominated for best choreography at the tony's it really annoys me, they had to incorporate a whole other language into their performance.
Agreed! Spring Awakening was completely snubbed this year. I think they deserved Best Direction and Best Lighting too.
Samuel B agreed!
a lot of shows were snubbed this year, but they all went up against Hamilton :/
Yeah Hamilton is of course very good but I feel Spring awakening was definitely snubbed on direction and choreography
Also some of the actors in this deserved a tony.
how is every single person in this production so incredibly attractive
SAME OK I'm so fucking bi
I'm very pan for all of them lol
I know right, it’s a good day to be bisexual
Sandra Mae Frank and Daniel Durant are my bisexual awakening
they’re actors
I'M SO BITTER THIS SHOW DID NOT GET A CHOREO NOD
Okay me too spencer life literally had to incorporate another language into his choreo
+Olivia Deveau *Liff
holy shit high school :'''')
How come I am like the only one to reply to this
the world may never know
Madeline Davidson that’s a cursed photo be carful !1!1!1
WAIT PAINT TRAVERSES THE SAME PLACES OF THE INTERNET AS I?!?
Why are you on every spring awakening video ever Jon
The irony of not having this video captioned
Well it was uploaded by Treshelle... A deaf cast member... And the entire video is done in both english and ASL...
Mike Hermida ii
Izzy Humair auditory processing issues require captions
@@IzzyHumair + not all deaf ppl know asl, some know bsl, auslan, or one of the other thousands of sign languages
Can they please please PLEASE do a pro-shot of this show? This is a historic work of art that needs to be preserved.
+broadwayfanaticcjb they are!!!
+Breene H I'm probably late to this, but they professionally recorded Deaf West revival of Spring Awakening????? Is it going to DVD?
+Kathleen H probably not. They've talked about it and they said no, because Spring Awakening isn't their show.
There is a bootleg available.
+vicpliesco WHERE??
me: wait where are their mic packs they're hidden so well!
me: ...oh right
oml
WHEN I TELL YOU I SCREAMED-
Wait where are they 👁👄👁
@@katiemartin9443 most of them don't sing bc they're deaf so they don't have mic packs
Esme Veda ohhh thank you ❤️
Austin P. McKenzie applied for a job as a sign language interpreter with Deaf West, and he wound up starring on Broadway. :)
The symbolism in this production is truly insane. I love how Otto's outfit looks like a sailor's uniform and the formation of the cast around him looks like a boat ahhhhh its absolutely gorgeous. And I'm in love with the human tree at the end, it's so poetic.
Steph Piano Actually it was a pretty common Outfit for Kids and Teenager in 1890s Germany... It is quite accurate, the others though, are more adult outfits than actually teenagers and kids, except for the short which were only for kids. For the guys at least. And honestly I don't know how it is for the girls, probably still too revealing 😅 Anyway this is what I learned on German history classes so far, and I kinda seem to be the only one noticing tbh
i read somewhere they found it and thought it was hilarious and fit otto really well, so it ended up in the show
Even in the 07 production, it was so stylized. Is this proper sign language? I'm so curious what that connection is to the play, since it was a feature of the choreography in the original production as well.
never knew I needed Andy Mientus rolling around on the floor until now
It's funny cause I never cared for Touch Me in the original show that much but then I saw this and this made it one of my favorite numbers of the whole show
Deaf West's staging of Mirror Blue Light is amazing. Check it out on UA-cam!
This late night show did a deaf west performance more justice than the Tony Awards did. Just. Wow.
ALEX WYSE'S RIFFS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD
I can't believe I had to scroll this far in the comments to get an ID on this dude 🙏
there is So Much going on at the end there... melchoir and mortiz's homoerotic dancing... martha and anna's homoerotic dancing... ilse dancing by herself at the back... ernst lifting wendla and then dancing with her... hanschen and otto rolling around on the floor like they've been possessed by demons of sexual frustration... thea and melitta sinking to the ground while leaning on each other's backs... greta trying to dance with the pillar...........
it's unbelievable how the show didn't win a Tony
everytime I see Ali on stage I can't stop smiling! just to see someone with a wheelchair on broadway is amazing, to know it's possible for someone like myself to make it show business changes everything!
I knew it! It's Ali!!
THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATIO MATTERS 💙💙💙
matt smith and now she’s won a tony
I’m pretty sure she was in Oklahoma too! As a wheelchair user too it also makes me so happy seeing people able to live their dreams!
yes! ali makes me so incredibly inspired seeing that it’s possible for shows to have someone who uses a wheelchair, plus making it accessible to her.
the choreo in this show it my sexuality
The biggest mood
FITTING
WHAT A MOOD
wow same
Bruh same
Anyone else notice how Ilse and Hanschen are looking at each other? Like, that would be a crazy friendship.
I was just thinking the same thing omg
the actors are best friends in real life, so
Someone write a sequel!
I am literally talking to a friend that I dragged into DWSA, discussing how both Hanschen and Ilse embody broken innocence with different coping mechanisms.
WOAH
I CANT WATCH THIS WITHOUT CRYING NOW THAT THIS SHOW IS CLOSED.
+Tyler Maxwell me either :(
I like your profile picture ;)
+Tyler Maxwell NATIONAL TOUR SOON!!!
Still eternally sobbing
Tyler Maxwell BUT I THINK MOST OF THE CAST WOULD STAY FOR THE TOUR AND IT'D BE SO AMAZING IT'S NOT GONE OK I'LL NEVER ACCEPT THAT IT'S GONE
Is anyone else obsessed with Georg's (blonde with glasses) voice?
+broadwaybaby24k Everyone.
+broadwaybaby24k That's why I'm here!
Alex Wyse, incredible talent. I met him at the Stage door outside the Brooks Atkinson theater in NYC. The cast was incredibly nice.
+broadwaybaby24k when I stage doored I HAD to tell him just how much I loved his part in this song. he was soo grateful I swear he almost melted into a puddle. he's absolutely the sweetest
+broadwaybaby24k alex wyse is literally amazing and also super super sweet
Lowkey have a crush on every male member of the cast after watching this
Greta G I highkey have a crush on every male character
i high key have a crush on every single cast member OOPS
I highkey also have a crush on every person in this show. Is this bi culture?

we are all crying over the beauty over the song about orgasms...
Well, if it's going to be a song about orgasms, it might as well be one of the most beautiful songs in theater :>
Jaycee Andres it's a beautiful song
I mean, to be honest, most of the songs in this show are about orgasms.
Kerah Bundy IT'S THE BITCH OF LIVING
Kerah Bundy That's it, that's the show
I will never understand why they didn't perform this at the tonys
It's been a year but SAME??? LIKE THE CHOREOGRAPHY??? GEORG'S BEAUTIFUL RIFFS??? THE OAK TREE AT THE END???? THIS SONG PERFECTLY CAPTURES WHAT SPRING AWAKENING IS ABOUT???? ANDY MIENTUS AND AUSTIN MCKENZIE??? I'M NOT OVER THIS????
I know right?
I know I'm late lol but probably bc the Tony's is a family show and this isn't family show as it's literally about sex and it's subtle at all
@@jaimeesummer5334 but they did perform Mama Who Bore Me and The Bitch of Living at the Tony's in 2016. Also the original cast did a mash up of the same songs + Totally Fucked at 2007 Tony's (though they did censor it a bit)
okay this is late but apparently the reason was the show was already closed when the tonys came and they havent performed it in a long time and this performance has a lot of signals and signs they had to relearn if they were to perform this again
I'm binge watching Spring Awakening videos seeing as I never got to see it on Broadway
+Kristiana Corona Its worse having been able to see it already and never getting to see it ever again except the clips. Nothing beats live performances.
Not sure if you're aware, but DWSA is going on a national tour at some point this year, hopefully you'll have a chance to see it then.
J Brooks has there been anymore information on that? I've been hunting for updates like a fiend, but I can't find anything outside of the initial announcement of it over a year ago...
TheBurbster not that I've seen, unfortunately. I hope it's still happening, but info is scarce. What I can say is I seem to remember the announcement saying the tour would *start* in 2017, not that it would all be in 2017, so look for more info later in the year I guess
Same here
I want the cast to touch me and by touch me I mean punch me in the face
Izzy Humair can I just say thank you so much for introducing me to this musical, I found out about it in one of your videos and I’m addicted now.
I'd like to personally thank Austin McKenzie for saving my life w that voice crack at 0:41
I want every frame of this video along with the soundwaves that it creates tattooed all over my face
this is the best comment
sAME
Just some things I noticed. They're subtle but beautiful. In the part where Otto is on top of everyone else, Daniel and Josh (Ernst) are working together as one to support Otto. As if they're the same person, which in the context is true. Also Andy's hand can be visibly seen for a brief moment resting on Josh's shoulder as they're moving back and forth.
Also at 2:00, on the piano, Josh and Daniel both sign together the word for touch me. I just think it's cute.
Daniel Durant's facial expressions are so captivating.
I know right? In every performance I see, it's him who draws my eye the most. He's hypnotic!
And he s back in acting under Apple TV's CODA in 2021... Will be in selective movie theatre as well.
I've never seen anything like this. It almost reminds me of a ballet performance.
look me in the eyes and tell me this isnt the most beautiful thing you've seen
alex wyse just slayed that performance
Anyone else notice that Wendla and Ernst were paired together. This song is about wanting to be together and I don't thing any of the pairings are random. I love the hint that Wendla slightly likes Ernst for his gentle nature and that Ernst dreams of Wendla as his little country wife.
Katie Marie Matthews also, Wendla and Ernest are kind of playing the same role. Melchior and Hanschen are foils, as the more knowing/less innocent of the two pairs, with Wendla and Ernst as the more innocent
Wendla as his red-cheeked wife omg that's so cute
Omg I can see them being friends so well know that you say that
WAIT THIS IS SO CUTE OMG
I feel like they’d be each other’s beards
I just noticed Krysta and Andy looking at each other when they're up in the front.
alex wyse’s riffs ohmyGOD
my favourite part is when Andy full on just fAlls on the floor
i envy who ever saw this production live. i would've been UGLY crying during this. that pause before the climax AND the lighting change. i would've died and my soul would've disappeared
I still can't believe I saw this live, it was like a dream.
...and everyone became an Alex Wyse fangirl.
Kinda makes sense. Skylar Astin played the same role in 2006, and look where he is now. He's like a god.
Can't wait for Alex to star in movie musical too ;)
seriously. 3:42 onwards tho
#AlexWyse4EvanHansen
Wasn’t Alex wyse literally everyone in newsies
That moment when Josh dramatically lifts up Sandy...
I always forget that Sandy's name isn't Wendla lol I just thought who tf is Sandy?
Ugh the verse with Melchior and Moritz starting at 3:07 gets me every time. I feel their bond so strongly. Daniel and Austin did an incredible job.
Can we talk about how good this Georg is? It's killing me.
I really enjoy this version, because first of all it is one of the most beautiful performances I’ve ever seen, but also because the dynamic between Melchior and Moritz is so prominent here. Without the scene in between where Moritz leaves, we get to truly see the interaction between them, and especially when they dance together. For me, it creates a clearer picture of their actual relationship, compared to the more ambiguous and speculated one. What I’m saying is that they are not completely straight for sure lmao
The actor for Melchior has a boyfriend
@@YeetusTheFetus I was just talking about the characters, not the actors!
This seriously may be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, the fact that they didn't get the recognition they deserved is ridiculous
All Broadway shows should be done this way.
dam.
Georg's hitting those high notes.
When Melchior and Moritz are singing to each other..... fellas
I wonder if Andy and Miles ever get hurt throwing themselves on the ground like that?
A thing that i always notice is that throughout the dwsa production specifically Andy and Josh are always together or close to each other some how, whether that be forming the oak tree in touch me or moving things around in the back round or even being the other boys in the reformatory and obviously twofb reprise and also in the bitch of living where their lines almost correlate lmao... like idk it doesnt add anything to hanschens and ernst's characters individually like but i love michael arden for it anyway
I still appreciate Michael Arden for having Ernst' voice bike around Hanschen during My Junk. It's such great foreshadowing.
whew cant believe i almost forgot to watch this today
I much prefer this revival to the original... the choreography is beautiful and I love their voices
The original was way better. I'm not saying that this version was bad. But the original with Groff, Michele, and Gallagher. you can't beat it
See, I personally prefer the direction and choreography of the revival, but I prefer the Original leads, I'd of loved to have seen the original cast do this version.
I strongly prefer the original, but to each their own :) also, I can't deny how amazing this cast is, but like I said, I personally love the original a lot more.
I prefer the cast of the original, but I really appreciate how they use ASL for this revival.
I prefer the revival in every way. I don't hate the original, but it never made me feel anything. Everything about the revival is just so beautiful and amazing. I cried multiple times while watching it and I'm not much of a crier.
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL THEY DESERVE ALL THE TONYS WHY AM I CRYING
seeing ali stroker here after that tony win makes me love this show more
I really love andy just on the floor lmao
Forever bitter that this show was so poorly represented at the Tonys. They could have _at least_ gotten a Best Choreo nod, or won for Best Revival. (because lbr, 99% of why The Color Purple won was because Cynthia Erivo is fucking stellar, but she already won for Best Actress sooo...).
I don't know how many times I've watched this, but I seriously cannot stop. This is an absolutely breathtaking performance from an absolutely incredible show!
Everyone should be able to experience musical theatre. So sad there's only been this one production and it didn't even last that long 😔
If it makes you feel better, this is actually the second production Deaf West brought to Broadway- they had a production of Big River in the '90s that made it as well. I'm hoping that they'll get another show onto Broadway (hopefully sooner than 15 years this time lol) and keep the momentum going. Between the fact that they had Marlee Matlin (a Deaf actor some hearing people actually know) involved and all the positive buzz this got, they should hopefully have enough momentum to get their next project here too. And if that happens enough, New York Deaf Theatre might start building on that momentum too.
J Brooks They now might be going on a US Tour!
no one:
melchior and moritz: **pointing at eachother** oOOOH I LOVE YOU RIGHTT
Hanschel writhing in ecstasy, Otto's jump spin, Georg's falsetto at the end 😭😭😭
ugh i can't believe this beautiful show closed tonight. so glad i got to see it!
That is on one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
This deserved so much more than it got. Amazing choreography with the asl. And i wanted daniel durant to have one best male performer. Coz he fucking nailed Moritz. Like imagine a deaf actor winning a tony for a musical. Hes amazing
Alex Wyse popping off!! ugh he sounds so good
3:23 But how does Miles (Otto) do that on beat if he's deaf. That shit blows my mind every time.
Yeah I know but he's definitely one of them. The hearing part of the cast is singing at that point and he is not.
He probably sees Moritz and Melchior moving or some other nonverbal cue.
I have a friend who is deaf and he can sing!!! He says he can tell what song it is because of the vibrations! It's really pretty cool!
I think he looks at his castmates walking on beat, maybe?
THIS.
God I can't even begin to describe my love for this revival. Words fail. It is a work of miracle and genius, two languages incorporated and entering into eachother's world, working in harmony, not to mention the diversity and representation of the cast which is so important. The choreography, undetectable visual cues and memorisation of just everything is simply stunning. Am 100% sure this cast was working harder than any other that was running at the same time as this show, and boy did it pay off. I want a London revival with BSL incorporated! X
Alex Wyse killed it in this
the paper thing (you know the thing) gives me cchhiillls
Honestly everything about the deaf west production is perfect
I've been losing my hearing for a few years now and wasn't too bothered about the original Spring Awakening. I only watched this production about a month ago and it has brought me to tears with how beautiful and more meaningful it is as a deaf production. The choreography is absolutely amazing and I loved this cast so much!
alex wyse gets me every time
Treshelle, would you turn captions on so I could add them? Be great for this to be accessible for sign users from others countries who don't know ASL. :)
when daniel david stewart starts singing i can’t it’s so good, and josh sitting on the piano is my life ugh. Also andy writhing around on the ground ha i can’t
ANDY and KRYSTA- I genuinely cannot 😭😭😍😍
The main boy is devistatingly cute and so is Sean g and omg kyra from Addams
I agree Ryan from the past
Ryan Oliveira you still agree Ryan in the future?
Holy snikes!! The guy playing the stand up bass is on RISE. He plays Simon's love interest.
Sometimes I just crave this video ya know
i try to watch everyone during this performance bu my eyes are like
👀 andy? We should watch andy. Yeah lets watch andy.
BIG MOOD
LIKE MY EYES ARE JUST GLUED TO HIM THE WHOLE TIME
Sing it Alex Wise… sing it!!!!
even though the came through tonight without any awards they did a FANTASTIC job and left a giant impact on so many people and i am SO PROUD to be a fan of this show and these people who deserve the world #notgone
When I saw this on Broadway I was blown away by how incredible and phenomenal it was
i think im in love with the girl with short hair in the chorus
tasminemma i think youre talking about krysta rodriguez and ya know?? me too
Ugh I'm crying.
I love this a normal amount and have watched this a normal amount of times. I love this a normal amount and have watched this a normal amount of times. I love this a normal amount and have watched this a normal amount of times. I love this a normal amount and have watched this a normal amount of times.
On my millionth viewing of this video, I notice that it is once again perfect because it puts the focus solely on the cast, particularly the Deaf cast, instead of moving the focus to the voice actor. While obviously the voice actors are just as much a part and do brilliant work, it is special and wonderful to see the emphasis put on the Deaf cast because they typically don't get that (cough cough the freaking Tony awards).
I was looking for Alex Boniello and the other musicians, but I couldn't really see them anywhere, except Daniel Stewart on piano (because you can't really move the piano well).
deaf west should come and do the show on the West end in London cos then I could go and see it. there should also be more musicals with sign language
Sam Wheeler they could call it the deaf west end
Claudia Lalonde that is a good name. is there any way we could get this to happen
They just need another translation tho, bc it's all in asl not BSL
I like this production waaaaaay more than the original
I miss this show so much
Wow i nearly forgot to watch this today
i come back to this video every other month or so and cry
this will never not give me chills
I AM NEVER GETTING OVER THIS
i've literally watched this video 10 times in the past hour god help me
This is my all time favorite version of this song
I kid you not this is my absolute favorite video on UA-cam rn
I didn't really like SA originally but the ASL just makes everything so much better
Seriously one of the most beautiful performances of anything I've ever seen
I swear the guy in the glasses is just elongated Ben platt
I cant "like" it enough times 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Still so sad this never went on tour.
I love when the camera pans to the audience cause it’s the closest I’ll get to feeling like I’m performing in this show on stage😂
This nearly brings me to tears every time I watch this. Especially near the climax into the end, everyone's so into the song, it's really quite a special and beautiful moment.
This is beautiful. I don't know what it is, but the signing adds something truly gorgeous to this piece
