It's perfectly understandable for it to be as expensive as it is especially with regards to its build quality. It's nice that they actually made it though but it's something I myself could ever justify buying just because of space issues. Personally Ed, I think you did a good job of accurately looking at the advantages and disadvantages of this system, and hopefully you'll get a few more buyers for this system because they'll certainly get their enjoyment out of it.
In all likelyhood the reason they went with Extra Version is because OG Rainbow Islands rather infamously uses a certain old movie tune as its entire stage BGM.
I'd say your review is the best one as expected. This is why I am subscribed to you for the longest time. Now, I'm regretting why I didn't pre-order one as I was not aware myself of how the device is superior over Astro City and Neo Geo Mini. Keep up the good work!
Great video!!! Did you get a look at how the monitor hooks up, is it an HDMI mini cable? It would be cool maybe gut the internals and throw some other type of device inside the shell if possible
Same day as Game Sack's video and nearly the same length. Cool. This video was really well put together. I look forward to the Tatsujin/Truxton comparison. I prefer the home versions so I can stand a chance. The red weapon in the arcade version makes me sad. Also, to my surprise, the skull effect on the bomb is so brief in the arcade version. It's a case where I prefer the changes for the home version, even if it was because of memory limitations. Also, good to hear someone else with good things to say about Fairyland Story. I think a lot overlook that one because it's so early, but it really surprised me back on the Taito Legends 2 compilation. It's quite good for that type of game and the visuals add to the fun. I encourage people to try that one for themselves because it was a nice surprise to me. When I mention it, I also like to leave a gameplay tip which is up + jump gives a tiny bit of extra height. I got stuck on a late stage where it was necessary to use that. Also, save states are good to have for that one due to the continue system being a bit odd. Accidentally losing progress is a bit too easy without a bit of insurance.
@@StudioMudprints - which game did you play in Shmup Slam? I watched some of the play but I didn’t know you were there. Saw Gameboy Guru in a chat though. ;) do you have a time stamp for where I can find you in one of the two videos from Saturday?
I was highly surprised by how much I am now interested in this thing. I just wish it wasn't a limited run so I could get one down the line without having to pay a resellers price increase. Hopefully they decide to make more because this is the first mini arcade I've been interested in. I really like the design and features on it.
@@StudioMudprints That's definitely it then, as even the Saturn and PS1 versions lost the music. They obviously only had the license for the arcade and a short time after and never renewed it. Interesting. And I don't think a rom exists of the original arcade game without that music, so they went with extra as per genesis version.
Hard to not just drop $500 on the game center bundle if you are going to buy extra accessories anyway. The only drawback is god knows when Strictly Limited will ship it out to you.
This is fair. However, I believe Games Rocket shows a May ship date, so hopefully it'll be a quick turnaround! I just wish we could have gotten the little extras like the arcade flyers and mini inserts. I won't be dropping another 680CAD or more for those though, haha
Strictly limited refuse to send me one in Australia.. So I was thinking of buying the normal version from Play Asia with the addition of the trackball controller. My hope is to add a ton of other games via hack and have the best portable to play TATE shmups on. But it would gut me if the western release gets updated with English Roms.. in that case I might ask someone to buy it for me and send it - do you know if the roms will be changed on the western release?
I was not notified of any planned significant software changes. There's always a chance they will be, but I can't say for sure. I'll reach out for you.
Watching this now but what wattage plug did you use to power it? Regular 5Watt? I have mine with the roller ball controller but I haven’t played it yet because I don’t want to use the wrong plug.
@@StudioMudprints - thank you so much my friend. I hope you two are safe and well. I always enjoy watching a new video from you guys and I always make sure to watch a few of the older ones as well! 👍💪👍💪
I’ve never liked the aesthetics of the candy cabs. Luckily, most of these games are available on the two Taito Legends discs. So many hours of great gameplay!
So they only changed the color... That's really cheap. Would have expected the rpg was now in English. I got the Japanese version, but it seems there was no point to wait for this version. 🤞
I think it's more to do with the extras that come with the bundles, honestly (which were not provided for evaluation). I do like the blue controls a little more though.

Stumbled onto your channel last week and I can’t get enough!

Fair assessment
Love that Growl retains the violence against women. All for the sake of the animals.
Thank you for the review of the title Egret to think it's very informational and I hope one of these days I will get it

There's still time! But if you do miss out here, the Japanese version should still be available.
Great review but tell me which planet has real Egret II cabinets for 420 Euros? I'll like to go there .. 😂
For just getting the cab and no board, it "starts approaching" the cost 😉
It's a nice touch that they put the Toaplan logo above Kyu & Tatsujin in the main menu. This is easily the best minicade, super satisfied with mine
I love the ability to flip the screen

It's a regular, normal HDMI port for once =)

I struggled to get this one done around my work schedule and Shmup Slam 5, so ideally it would have been out sooner. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

Fair. Of course, the Japanese original should be easier to obtain (as are the controllers as we got them on Amazon Japan)
I never realised the main character from Liquid Kids is a platypus. Surprised Taito didn't call it "Australia Story" now.
With the as card a lot I hope they add more games or that it’s hackable, because the cost in general is high
They probably couldn't get the over the rainbow music license to include the original Rainbow Islands.. or didn't want to pay for it again lol.
I thought for sure it would have been public domain by now, but it'll be 2036 or something at the earliest.

FYI: Pirate Pete is just a reason of Jungle King/Jungle Hunt
Awesome review, I am still debbating pulling the trigger on this but I just might!
Tell em who sent ya 😆

Pirate pete was a reskin of a Tarzan game they had to cancel as they didn't have the licence

Yes

Any difference between Japan and western version?
Outside of the button color, no.

Good lord, Everyone's reviewing this thing 🤣
I wish I had gotten it out sooner 😪
durr-i-as? lmfao
Laugh it up, then watch this Japanese commercial: ua-cam.com/video/8b6H0vKagrs/v-deo.html
The only thing I'm gonna say is Qix is pronounced "Kicks".
I truly enjoyed the review, and if I can, I will finance the standalone machine.
Yeah, one of my longtime viewers got after me on both Twitter and Discord. In NY defense, I was looking at the Japanese version's spelling 😅
Also, it's 'Darius' all one word...not Dar- 'I' -us with a hard I.
